The excitement of the summer has passed,
and we move forward with the ongoing
programs at Huntington Arts Council. As
we welcome several new board members
(see below), we would like to acknowledge
those rotating off our board: Immediate
Past President Andrea J. Maire for her years
of service, dedication and stewardship;
Kenneth Gold for his commitment to the
arts; Lucy Mazany for steering the annual
budgeting process to a workable solution;
and Rosemary McLaughlin for her passion
and assistance with Got Talent? Thanks
also to Robert Maire, Andrea’s husband,
who served on our Finance Committee and
helped guide HAC to financial stability. It
is with admiration and gratitude that we
extend our sincere thanks.
HAC celebrated the 50th anniversary of
the Huntington Summer Arts Festival with
a reception at Heckscher Museum on June
27, 2015. We honored Sandy Chapin with
our “Harry and Sandy Chapin Arts and
Humanitarian Award” in recognition of her
advocacy for the arts and commitment to arts
education, including founding Huntington
Arts Council’s Journey Program and acting
as our Arts Education chairperson. The event
helped launch the Huntington Summer Arts
Festival, giving it the special recognition
that a golden anniversary deserves.
Moving forward, the Main Street Gallery
continues to thrive, with Member Shows,
Invitational Shows, our annual Art Auction
and “Nightmare on Main Street” exhibit.
Our Arts in Education Journey Program now
serves seven school districts, as we welcome
our newest partner, Cold Springs Harbor
CSD. Our NYSCA Creative Communities
grants program moves into full swing under
the guidance of our new grants coordinator,
Shelby Hintz.
It is always a busy time HAC, and the next
few months will continue our exciting and
enriching activities.

Letter From The Supervisor
Dear Friends:
Anyone scanning the extensive listings
in the cultural calendar published in this
newspaper would be well aware of the rich
diversity of professional arts programming
offered in our community. However, what
may be less apparent is the considerable
artistic and creative talent exhibited by our
young people. From school music concerts
and theatrical performances to dance recitals
and art exhibitions in both school and
community settings, the impressive creative
abilities of our youth reassure us that
Huntington is destined to continue as Long
Island’s Cultural Capital for generations to
come.
Among these many opportunities for
creative youth, one of my favorites is our
very successful Poetry for the HART teen
poetry program. This program invites teen
poets (ages 14-18) to submit short poems
for review and possible selection for display
inside our Town’s HART buses. Since the
program was begun in 2003, more than
150 talented teen poets have had their work
featured as part of this Public Art Initiative
project. These works are read and enjoyed
by our riders who use our HART buses each
year.
Working with the Town’s Public Art
Advisory Committee in presenting this
program are several community partners,
including Teenspeak, the Lead Agency
who suggested the project to the Town.
Additional partners in this project, include
Heckscher Museum of Art; Huntington Arts
Council; The Long Islander, which publishes
the winning poems; REACH CYA; Town of
Huntington Youth Bureau; Tri-Community
Supervisor Frank P. Petrone
Youth Agency; Walt Whitman Birthplace
Association, which typically hosts our
annual award reception and reading of the
winning poems; and Youth Directions &
Alternatives CYA, as well as numerous
area teachers who actively encourage their
students’ participation.
I encourage our teen poets to take
advantage of this unique creative
opportunity. For a listing of past winners
and their poems, as well as information
on the 2016 program, visit www.
HuntingtonNY.gov/HARTpoetry or call the
Town’s Division of Cultural Affairs at 631351-3099.

50th Anniversary VIP Reception and Chapin Family Concert
The Huntington Arts Council celebrated
the 50th Anniversary of the Huntington
Arts Festival and honored Sandy Chapin
with our “Harry and Sandy Chapin Arts
and Humanitarian Award” on June 27th at
a special event at Heckscher Museum of
Art. The board of directors hosted a VIP
reception attended by 100 guests, including
members of the Chapin Family, Huntington
Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and members
of the Town Council, previous board chairs
and members and other friends of HAC.
The reception was scheduled prior to a
performance by the Chapin Family at the
Summer Arts Festival, which was cancelled
to due heave rain, then rescheduled to
Monday, June 29.
Sandy Chapin is a former Vice President
of the Huntington Arts Council. She created
the Journey Program and still serves as the
chair of the Arts in Education program. The
program has been the focus of our Arts in
Education program for thirty years, and
continues in seven school districts. Chapin
was also recognized for her humanitarian
efforts to combat hunger by founding
organizations such as Why Hunger and
Long Island Cares, which runs The Harry
Chapin Food Bank.
Chapin graciously accepted the honor
from HAC, as well as a proclamation from
Supervisor Petrone and the council members
in recognition of her services to arts on L.I.
and the fight against hunger. HAC President
Debbi Honorof and Executive Director
Marc Courtade accepted a proclamation in
recognition of 50 years of stewardship of
the Summer Arts Festival. The State of New
York also honored HAC with a Legislative
Resolution in honor of the 50th Anniversary.
Thanks to Senators Carl Marcellino and
John Flanagan and Assembley Members
Chad Luppinacci and Andrew Raia for their
special recognition.
The rescheduled concert with the Chapin
Family happened through unprecedented
cooperation between the artists, the Town of
Huntington and HAC. The Town rededicated
Heckscher Park Stage, unveiling a new sign
officially naming the concert venue as the
Chapin Rainbow Stage. Many thanks to
all concerned for making this happen. The
concert took place on a beautiful summer
evening to the delight of friends and fans of
the Chapins.

Arts in Education
JOURNEY - Celebrating 30 years
The JOURNEY program is offered
through the Huntington Arts Council and was
established by chairperson Sandy Chapin
and several area educators in 1985. This year
we celebrate the 30th year of continuous
programming.
The JOURNEY program has offered
teachers and students the opportunity to learn
about cultures and people throughout the
world. The vehicle used for exploring subjects
like geography, world history, economics,
global migration, language and social/cultural
interaction has been through the arts. Dance,
visual arts, theatre, spoken word and music are
the art forms brought to students by teaching
artists from all over the world.
This year JOURNEY welcomes Cold
Spring Harbor Central Schools as a ‘partner
district’. Other districts joining us again
are: Commack, Harborfields, Huntington,
Northport/East Northport, Plainview Old
Bethpage and South Huntington. Some of
these districts have participated in our program
the entire 30 years of JOURNEY’s existence!
In addition to the input of district liaisons
we enjoy direct contact with teachers and
central administrators who provide input to the
program through evaluations, meetings and
lesson plans and suggestions for programming.
Districts that participate have full access to
the three main components of JOURNEY:
Cultural Arts Workshops for Teachers
– 15 hours offered
each fall.
Offered
for
Professional
Development or inservice credit, districts
enjoy

Discovery Lending Chests: Districts have
unlimited use of the chests and six cultures that
are represented: Ancient Egypt, Africa, China,
India, Latin America and Native America.
From Social Studies to ELA standards – these
chests bring learners of all types to investigate,
explore and use cultural artifacts, artworks,
household tools, musical instruments and
writing tools to learn about other cultures.
Texts and media are included with the cultural
artifacts. Students learn to gain empathy with
others and explore the cultures of many places
including the many nations and cultures that
exist within the USA.
Visiting Artists – Artists from all over
the world working in dance, ceramics,
theater, textiles, spoken word, painting and
music bring their programs to the schools.
Classroom workshops, residencies and school
wide assemblies are offered.
In addition to the in-school resources, the
Huntington Arts Council reserves gallery space
each year to our participating districts through
an art exhibit called High Arts Showcase. We
work with district art teachers to identify art
majors in their senior year to participate in this
annual exhibit. The exhibit and reception is
covered by local media and attended by the
Huntington Arts Council members.
Over the years, the JOURNEY program
has kept pace with school districts needs.
From the beginning, our district’s educators
have been involved in this program’s
development and growth. As we finish the
30th year – we know that Sandy Chapin’s
vision JOURNEY’s central mission to foster
the appreciation of cultural diversity through
the arts is still working in the classrooms for
students and teachers.
Summer Arts Enrichment Program 2015
Once again the Summer Arts Enrichment
Program was a great success! The 2015
program included some exciting new courses
including “Ukulele Jam Band”, “Painter’s
Palette” and “ROCK-estra!” The four-week
program had many performing and visual
arts courses to choose from, as well as some
elective programs like “Art of Aviation” and
“Chess with the LI Chess Nuts!”. Students
could choose up to four classes a day where
they would work with local teachers as well
as talented HS students. This year students
also had the opportunity to have an up close
and personal performance by PubliQuartet
& The Mighty Third Rail, as well as the
Metropolitan Flute Quartet. Parents were
“wowed” on the last day of the program with
an amazing art display as well as a variety of
performances by our very talented students. It is always remarkable to see the level of
creative progress that is made in such a short
timeframe. The excitement, enthusiasm and
pride on the students’ faces is priceless. This
year we have set up a shutterfly share site
for viewing pictures of artwork as well as
the students in action. Please go to - https://

access the photos. Hope to see you next year!

Thanks for the Memories!
The 50th Anniversary Huntington
Summer Arts Festival was one of the most
enjoyable and successful festivals ever,
leaving us many musical memories to savor
and much to be thankful for.
Hi-lights? Begin with the Chapin
Family – the Saturday evening concert
was rescheduled to the following Monday
due to heavy rain. More than 2,200 were in
attendance to witness the rededication of the
Chapin Rainbow Stage by Town Supervisor
Frank Petrone, the entire Huntington
Town Council, and Suffolk Legislator
William “Doc” Spencer. Thanks to the
entire Chapin clan for their willingness
to reschedule and for their rousing
performance!

Thanks and kudos to Stephen Petronio
Dance for kicking off the final weekend on
a Thursday with their startling performance;
followed by the peerless Celtic band Lúnasa
on Friday; then the always brilliant David
Stewart Wiley and the L.I. Philharmonic
on Saturday; and winding up with an electric,
“gotta get up and dance” performance by
Gedeon Luke and the People.
technical staff who collectively make the
shows sound and look so good… thanks
(and welcome!) to new Exec. Director Marc
Courtade and the HAC Board for their
leadership and to the HAC staff for their
hard work and assistance … thanks to TOH
Parks, General Services and Public Safety
for all their efforts and support.
On behalf of the Board and Staff of
HAC, we recognize and deeply appreciate
the support of the following: the Town
of Huntington and the Huntington Town
Council; the New York State Council on
the Arts; the County of Suffolk; presenting
sponsor Canon, Family Series sponsor
NEFCU; and other corporate sponsors
Astoria Bank, Philips Boyne Company,
Daniel Gale Sotheby’s; additional financial
support provided by the NYS Presenters

NYS DanceForce; in-kind and equipment
donations provided by D’Addario & Co.,
King Kullen, Koenig & Meyer (compliments
of Connolly Music), Korg USA, Samson
Technologies, Hartke and Huntington
Camera Club.
Of course, the success and longevity of the
Huntington Summer Arts Festival would
not be possible without the support of our
audience. You’ve attended, enjoyed and
applauded what we do here for fifty years
now. So a huge THANKS to you the public!

celebrated its 70th Season, dedicated to
former Director Bob Domincetti who passed
last winter. Heartfelt thanks to current
Director Tom Gellert and the entire HCB for
another five-concert series of memorable,
challenging and superbly played music.
Many thanks are also owed to Ravi
Coltrane, Ron Stein and the fine folks at
The Coltrane Home, and literally dozens
of participating artists for Coltrane Day
on Sunday, July 5. Workshops & jam
sessions featured a who’s who of L.I. jazz
musicians; the evening culminated in a
rousing performance by the Ravi Coltrane
Quartet.

Meet The Artist - An Extra Dimension
One of the great pleasures in planning
the Huntington Summer Arts Festival is
developing a roster of artists who will not
only entertain on the Chapin Rainbow
Stage, but who will also interact directly
with the community, especially young
people. In 2015, we expanded our efforts
to engage the community with new
complementary activities:
July 5, designated Coltrane Day
thanks to a collaboration with the
Coltrane Home and the tireless efforts
of Ron Stein and many others, provided
workshops in improvisation, percussion
and songwriting, plus community jams
in jazz, funk and the blues throughout
Heckscher Park, concurrent with
onstage performances by Harborfields
H.S. Jazz Band, Bangalore Breakdown
& the Mala Waldron Quartet. The
evening performance was preceded by
an on-stage interview with headliner
Ravi Coltrane that explores the legacy
of his father, John Coltrane, whose
seminal composition “A Love Supreme”
was written in Huntington 50 years ago.
The full day was a tremendous success,
drawing more than 2600 jazz fans, and
will, we hope, become a paradigm for
Coltrane Days in future festivals.
PUBLIQuartet, a classical chamber
music ensemble, joined the Mighty Third
Rail, a violin/bass and spoken word hiphop trio, for a workshop and Q&A for
120 students at the Cultural Enrichment
Summer Camp administered by HAC with
the Huntington UFSD. Later that day, they
gave a mini-performance for 230 youth at
Project Play at the Jack Abrams School,
a TOH Youth Bureau program. Both
workshops introduced elements of their
adventurous collaboration “Changing
Night.” The full version of this retelling
of the creation story was performed that
evening, challenging the audience with it
its sci-fi /hip hop sensibility.
Grammy™ winner Dan Zanes
entertained 125 students in the YMCA
Performing Arts Camp with his tuneful
and danceable songs.
De Temps Antan treated the audience
to an inside view of Quebecois music and
an often hilarious depiction of life on
the road during a pre-concert interview
with Michael Kornfeld (President of Folk
Music Society of Huntington).
Arturo O’Farrill (also a Grammy™
winner for Best Latin Jazz Album in
2015) instructed 35 students and their
counselors at the Tri Community Youth
Agency in Huntington Station on the
rhythmic and percussive elements of
Latin Jazz. Arturo performed with his
full 18 piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra
that evening to more than 2000 attendees.
The Petronio Dance Company held
an open rehearsal the afternoon of their
performance. Their brilliant Founder and
Artistic Director Stephen Petronio stayed
after the show for an enlightening and
entertaining Q&A with the audience.
The
complementary
activities
described above exemplify why the
Huntington Summer Arts Festival
is so important for performing arts
presentations in the Town of Huntington.
Not only does the festival feature the best
local ensembles, but a uniquely diverse
and ever-changing roster of touring artists
from the U.S. and around the world,
artists who go the extra mile and work
with us to further enrich the community
with their talents and joy in performing.
There is truly no other festival like it on
