RS Newsletter-CA-ATL - Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo
THE LEGACY CONTINUES – CELEBRATING 32 YEARS OF BEING AUTHENTIC
As 2016 progresses, so does the Bill Pickett Invitational
Rodeo. With Denver and Memphis rodeos behind us,
everyone has had time to heal and prepare for the West
Coast tour, with stops in both Oakland and Los Angeles.
Once the West Coast tour is completed, we will move to
the East coast for Atlanta prior to heading to Washington,
DC for the BPIR finals.
As we are preparing for the West Coast, we should reflect
on the success of Memphis, TN rodeo in April and give a
huge Thank You to Miss Kitty and her team for an excellent
job. As usual the Memphis community welcomed the
Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo with their usual hospitality.
The “Rodeo for Kidz Sake” on Friday morning amused and
educated about 3000 kids. As I greeted the kids, it was
quite touching to see the excitement in their eyes and
address some of their questions, like ‘where are the Black
Cowboys and Cowgirls’, ‘who is Bill Pickett’ and ‘what is
a Black rodeo’? In my mind, just seeing their inquisitive
nature and excitement always validates the importance
of maintaining an all-Black rodeo circuit. This is a major
reason why the legacy must continue.
While the students give purpose to what we do, so do
Black Cowboys and Cowgirl s with their sense of pride
to be a part of a legacy. It is equally exciting to see
the cowboys and cowgirls visit with and educate the
students on the involvement of African Americans in the
development of the West and about the various rodeo
events.
During the Friday morning show, it was important to pause
and give tribute to a young soul, one of the students who
was a horse lover and had transitioned to his heavenly
home. Once the kids rodeo was over, it was even more
exciting to see the student’s faces and hear the comments
as they left. Comments such as, ‘now I know there are real
Black cowboys and cowgirls’, ‘I like the Black Rodeo’ and
‘I wish I could ride a horse’. It is the impact of the smiling
faces and the heartfelt words that confirms that we should
never forget the impact we have on the future generations.
Ms. Kitty, being the great host she is, coordinated and
organized a trip to the Casino for all the Bill Pickett
Invitational Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls. It was another
fun evening of laughing, bonding and sharing, while filling
our bellies. After a fun evening, it was time to head back to
the city, but as usual we had a few who were late for the
bus because they were trying to cash in their winnings. So
glad we had some winners.
THE LEGACY CONTINUES – CELEBRATING 32 YEARS OF BEING AUTHENTIC
Everyone or should I say most everyone got a good night sleep as they prepared for
the Saturday night rodeo. The lines were forming and people were all decked out in
their western wear ready to experience the “Greatest Show of Dirt”.
You can tell the show is about to begin when Sam plays the Last Train Home and the
Bill Pickett song. Everyone gets in place and the crowd is energized and ready to see
the competition. The show delivered much excitement as the crowd responded to the
intense completion.
After an electrifying evening of entertainment, we knew the event winners for each
event. In Bareback, Harold Miller walked away with 1st place, while Jimmy Patterson
took 2nd place. They were the winners because no one else had a qualified ride.
Moving to Calf Roping, Matthew Sloan walked away on top with 1st in, followed by
James Berry with a 2nd place finish. Aaron and Anthony Johnson took 3rd and 4th
respectively, while Chris Rolling and Harrell Williams rounded out 5th and 6th place.
The Bull dogging event created its on excitement with the first three winners within
four tenth of each other. Tory Johnson won with a 4.6 to take 1st place. Kendrick Tyus
placed 2nd with a 5.0 and James Taylor with a 5.4. In the Ladies Steer Undercoratin’
event there were some new winners who came to make a mark at the BPIR. 1st place
was won by Azja Bryant with a 2.38, followed closely by Renesha Hardi with a 2.79 for
2nd and Stephanie Haynes with a 3.18 for 3rd. Chae Scott was very close behind for
4th with a 3.21. Tiffani Carter and Jhani Hardin rounded out the event for the 5th and
6th places with 3.75 and 3.84 respectively.
The beautiful Black ladies were not finished entertaining the audience. They came
full force during the Ladies Barrel Racing event with Michelle Baccus winning 1st
place with a 15.605. She was followed closely by Kanesha Jackson with a 15.670,
while Mikala Nealy was not far behind with 15.694 for 3rd. To round out the final paid
positions, Krishaun Adair took 4th with 15.082, Stephanie Haynes in 5th with a 16.330
and 6th place by Denesha Henderson.
The Barrel Racing section was finished out with the Jr. Barrel Racing event, which
brought the crowd to their feet as the young kids competed and showed no fear of a
fast horse That event was won by Kendra Tyus and followed by Kortnee Solomon and
Linden Demery, who are the future of Black rodeo. With that event being over, the
rodeo staff a fourth barrel preparing for the fast pace Relay Race event, where over 10
teams competed and Rushing Stage took first place.
The final event for the evening was Bull Riding and while the cowboys appeared to be
ready to ride any bull and the bulls were saying ‘bring it on’. The bulls were on their
game and kept all the cowboys from staying on for the 8 seconds.
As the rodeo came to an end, the crowd had been truly entertained by the cowboys
and cowgirls. The cowboys and cowgirls took the arena floor to tip their hats and
thank the crowd for being a part of the evening.
After a great rodeo in Memphis, it is now time to move on to California for important
competition and wins, which could influence qualification for the BPIR finals. It is
crunch time, so I hope to see you all in Oakland , Los Angeles and Atlanta.
Let’s rodeo!

Directors are responsible for making sure the event rules are being followed and
must be at the rodeo early enough to complete the directories’ responsibilities.
Directors are responsible for the following items if applicable to their event:
o
Assist in marking or staking the arena
o
Locate the 4 metal barrels
o
Remove/replace barrel covers
o
Run cattle through
o
Identify lame or defective stock and cut from rodeo
o
Identify stock number and provide information to
rodeo secretaries
o
Address event issues and engage Judges or Rodeo management
team when appropriate.
o
Directors are expected to be at each rodeo
o
If a director cannot attend a rodeo, they are responsible for
notifying the Alternate to assure alternate will be in attendance.
Director should advise the secretary as soon as possible they will
not be in attendance and Alternate will be performing job duties.
o
If Alternate is also unable to attend, the director must notify one
of the rodeo secretaries immediately, who will notify Sedgwick
and Carolyn. Sedgwick and Carolyn are then responsible for
identifying an acting director for that specific rodeo.
Directors will be paid after each rodeo once Carolyn and Sedgwick sign off with the secretaries that all duties were performed in a timely and satisfactory manner.
