RECOVERY INNOVATIONS THE FIVE RECOVERY PATHWAYS V O L U M E I V , I S S U E 2 F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 4 HOPE Truly Lyrically, Soulfully CHOICE by Gordon Durich, Peer Support Specialist EMPOWERMENT RECOVERY “Recovery for the Lyrical Soul” is Recovery Innovations’ interactive workshop designed for peers who love music, appreciate listening to it and sharing experiences of recovery. CULTURE SPIRITUALITY DEFINITION OF RECOVERY Music can be many things for many people..stimulating, relaxing, meditative, inspiring and helping us remember who we are. Music helps us draw on our strengths to become all we are meant to be. Recovery is remembering who you are and using your strengths to be all you were meant to be. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Greetings From Mary 2 Inspired: Notable and Quotable 2 Mindfulness & Vocation by Patricia Ebner 2 Recovery Innovations is Hiring...WE WANT YOU! 3 Recovery Tips: The Power of Love 3 It’s ironic one of my favorite musical bands is Mental As Anything (nicknamed the “Mentals”). Its song “If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too?” resonated with enough folks to become a hit in their native Australia and beyond. And so it is with the magic of music, and lyrics. Through the mere appreciation of music, Recovery for the Lyrical Soul holds the key to promoting healing and easing stress. RI Newsworthy Announcements 4 The range of recovery songs and music is limitless. From ABBA to Z.Z. Top. A personal and popular favorite is "Everybody Hurts” by REM. It reminds me to hold onto hope during the recovery journey. What’s really gratifying is the respect peers give each other for their musical choices. Often, someone will be inspired to add a new addition to their freeform playlist. “I’ll have to add that one to my playlist,” said a regular after listening to Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.” It’s also nice to know things are not taken too seriously and humor is appreciated! THE CLIENT NETWORK presents I Miss You by Nick Lara A Special Valentine’s Day Workshop: I missed you for so long, I remember you and I dream about you If I saw you again, I’d probably cry. The beauty was outstanding. It was also a great atmosphere. Everyone was festive and friendly. Recovery Services Administrator, Mary McQuown I had a very enjoyable camping trip to Death Valley National Park in January. I was a bit skeptical about what there would be to see in the desert, but my national park guide- Oc RECOVERY FOCUS I was surprised at the beauty to be found in the desert. There are mountains all around and vast salt flats from lakes that once filled the valley. There are multi-colored rock formations from the many different chemicals in Sometimes, we find beauty in unexpected places. There are many kinds of beauty. Not only is there beauty in the natural environment, but beauty can be found in the relationships that we develop with friends, family, and coworkers. You can find beauty in the smile of a stranger. There is beauty in the kindness of a neighbor. Look for the beauty around you! tob “Love one another and help others to rise to the higher levels, simply by pouring out love. The Recovery Pathways are HOPE, CHOICE, EMPOWERMENT, RECOVERY CULTURE AND SPIRITUALITY. When we begin with a genuine feeling of unconditional love, we are able to see that recovery really is there for all who are willing to take the first step in their recovery journey. Acceptance is easy when you love the person for who they are. Love is at each individual’s core. When we truly believe in the good inside of every unique individual, we are able to hold the HOPE for them, we are able to honor their CHOICES, which EMPOWERS them in a nurturing RECOVERY ENVIORNMENT which enhances SPIRITUALITY or what truly is an individual’s MEANING and PURPOSE.
