Contents IP & Innovation Support for HPSS-NI David Brownlee AHP Research Conference 17 October 2006 • What is Intellectual Property (IP) • What is Innovation? • Types of IP & innovation • What do you need to protect Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) • CRSC assistance • HPSS Innovations Copyright © 2006 CRSC What is IP? • • • Intellectual Property (IP) is creative and innovative ideas that are assets in the same way that Physical Property is a tangible asset Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are the rights obtained to use and protect intellectual property RGF – requires HPSS to identify, protect, manage and exploit IP What is Innovation? • Innovation is the successful exploitation of (new) ideas – IP • The incorporation of new technologies, design and best practice is the key business process that enables organisations including the Health and Personal Social Services (HPSS) in Northern Ireland (NI) to deliver improvements in the healthcare sector. Research /Practice Innovation • Innovation occurs naturally in the HPSS through the work of its employees. • It could take a number of forms: ¾ novel treatment ¾ new diagnostic ¾ new or improved device ¾ new drug or its new use ¾ data ¾ software ¾ training material ¾ a treatment protocol ¾ a new management system etc. Intellectual Property (IP) Protect Disclose Technology Transfer (Consideration) Technology Diffusion Innovation Licensed, Assigned Sale or JV Healthcare Benefits (Free) Publication, Conference, WWW, etc To develop innovations, IP must be available, unpublished and protected 1 Types of IP * • Four main types: – Patents – Trademarks – Designs – Copyright • Copyright © 2006 CRSC • Technology Pie Many other types: – – – – Performance rights Trade secrets database rights semiconductor topographies – Plant breeders rights – conditional access technologies Copyright © 2006 CRSC Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Innovation in NI • World’s first mobile defibrillator. • 1965, Royal Victoria hospital, a team led by Prof Frank Pantridge, converted a mains defibrillator to operate from two car batteries in the back of an old ambulance – 70 kg • Invention was the forerunner of the portable defibrillator saved the lives of “n” patients over the past 40 years. • The technology had significant IP associated with it and was protected by a family of worldwide patents. • This IP protection contributed significantly to its successful exploitation. Health Innovations • Health Promotion Agency (HPA) - licensed rights to Chiron for manufacture of meningitis B vaccines • Nutritional Guidelines - copyright, CD-ROM, sale is generating revenue for Trust for further nutritional developments • Pupilometer - low cost, hand held device for monitoring pupil size during brain surgery - North East England • Hand Surgery Table • Ultrasound Diagnostic technologies • "My Diabetes" information pack 2 Innovation Support • CRSC (02) – advice & support for clinical research • Advise, encourage and support the identification and subsequent application and exploitation of IP from the R&D base of HPSS and its Trusts HPSS Innovations • Promotion and awareness of IP and Innovation • Advice on research contract issues (IP), CDA, MTA • To exploit innovations, IP must be available, unpublished and protected HPSS Innovations • DTI PSRE 3 funding announced Jan 2006 - £1.6M (£750K DTI, InvestNI <tbc> and HPSS) • an innovation management service focusing on innovations arising from HPSS bodies in NI. • a recognized centre of capacity and expertise to which staff and industry can direct their ideas and innovations. • develop and implement activities to support an increased level of development of HPSS research. • Acceleration of potential products to market and revenue streams • Links with the healthcare industry Promoting and supporting High quality Health and Social Care Research In Northern Ireland INNOVATION FLOWCHART Idea/Invention Research & Dev.
