FEBRUARY 2011 NEWSLETTER CLUB OFFICERS President: Don Stadick Vice President: Clint Williams Treasurer: Bill Halvorson Sergeant At Arms : Jim Allen Editor: Jim Kampmann Welcome to the February Newsletter! I’ve been asked to entertain the members with this month’s message, as our leader is currently under the weather. I will let Bob talk about Rochester; it was another wonderful event and well worth the short drive south. This month we begin our first theme for the year, that being straight line models. As is always the case, this is just a suggested theme. If you’ve just finished a stock car for example, please bring it. We all love to see what people are working on. The 2011 racing season is upon us, which I for one always look forward to because it means that spring is right around the corner. Daytona should be interesting with the new paved surface, and the Winternationals are just week away. March 18th is the kickoff for the first F1 race, and the Indycar season begins on March 27th. Lots of new kits and accessories to look forward to. This month Revell is releasing three car kits, the ’85 SVO Mustang, ’68 Corvette L88 Rebel Race Car (winner of Sebring in ’72) and from Germany is the Mercedes F1 car from 2010. Check out Hiroboy.com this month. There’s a 1/24th figure of Steve McQueen by Elan for your 917. And Tamiya is reissuing the ’76 McLaren M23 in both 1/20 and 1/12th scales. One thing that I mentioned to Bob Maderich about after the Rochester show was that it would be nice to have some RPM club info to give to potential members. I know that there’s a membership application floating around on someone’s computer somewhere, but if it was available to members we could then print it out. I still haven’t seen the new membership cards for 2011. Hopefully those will show up on Saturday (hint hint). If you’re not on Hub Hobby’s email list, you’re missing out on some savings! They just sent out a coupon a few days ago for a free $10 gift card when you spend $50. I know it doesn’t seem like a lot, but kits are getting pricey! Add that to the Kyle discount and well, I won’t go there... Thanks, Jim Hope It Don’t Snow Show 2011 By Bob (My car is the RPM taxi) Maderich Ahh, the first show of the year! Yes, it was time again to venture forth to the wilds of Rochester for the annual "Hope it Don't Snow" event. A large percentage of the club showed up and brought out plenty of good models to share. Overall, there were 311 models on the tables with the cars making up a good 1/4 of the entrants. The RPM members brought home their share of medals and the Best competition awards went to Jim Kampmann (Open Wheel) and Andy Martin (closed wheel). The guys in the Zumbro Valley club always do a great job with the show and it's a pleasure to begin the year visiting them. If you haven't been there, go! It's off to Milwaukee next. ! FEBRUARY 2011 On the Table by Mark Rollie January in Minnesota may inspire thoughts of hibernation, and for this month's On the Table, it was obvious that keeping the big comfy inside one's home gets a lot of work done! First up was Jim Kampmann's build of the Monogram Woody Wagon. Jim wanted to replicate the original 60‘s kit (which he displayed with the model). He used the current issue but swapped out the suspension and the kit’s wheels & tires. Jim also used the woodgrain decals from the current kit to finish off the outside paneling. Bill Read brought in his build of the popular Revell '32 Ford Sedan, which was mostly OOB and finished in flat black, and with extra detail including plug wires and Fred Cady pinstripe decals. Bob Maderich was a triple threat with his Monogram '50 Ford Pickup pulling a trailer that came from the AMT/ Model King Cougar f/c Drag Team kit. Bob used Parts by Parks Baby Moons on the truck, Fred Cady decal on the door, and replaced the bumper with a piece of wood to be the push bar. Sitting on the trailer was Revell's '32 Ford Roadster, with wheels and tires from Arrowhead, and using a piece of special lead for the side canopy. Then it was my turn to show off a WIP of the McLaren Mercedes MP4/20, a kit by Revell/Germany in 1/24th. Silver finish by Testors Aluminum (buff) Metalizer and Tamiya Gloss Black, with Tamiya paints used for detailing. The kit goes together fairly easy, the difficulties lie with the masking for paint and the fussy decals. It’s great when a guest comes around to visit, and even more so when they bring something in! This month Kurt Mahoney paid RPM a visit, and brought in a Tamiya Toyota tuner car, which he described as a fairly easy build which was also a tight fit putting it all together. Erik Zabel had the next F1 car, also from Revell/Germany, this of the Sauber-Petronas C-22 which was built mostly box stock. Jim Johnson had a Mustang project going on, using a couple of AMT kits. The roof from a '66 Mustang was sawed off to be combined with a '68 Mustang, aiming at turning this into a TransAm Bill Meyer's #22 car. '32 Fords just don't stop in popularity, and Jim Mulligan had his chopped 5-window as proof, which used (in his words) a ton of aftermarket parts, including a resin chassis and new radiator. Bill Johanneck brought in a sharp looking '90 Chevy pickup, and on the flip side, an El Camino purposely built to look like it just drove out of the junkyard, with primer and mismatched parts. The Lindberg '61 Impala was Jim Allen's build of a Don Nicholson racer, with scratchbuilt headers, rims from a '62 Pontiac kit (as Jim felt the kit rims were not very good), tires from a Revell '62 Chevy, but at least the kit decals were used. Tamiya Pure White was used for the finish. Torben Rothgeb, putting aside NASCAR for a while, got in touch with his inner drag child and brought a WIP of Revell's Austin kit, with a paint job consisting of Tamiya Gold and Clear Red over that, and Dick Landy decals for decoration. More complete was the new Revell Mongoose Duster release, built pretty much box stock and which Torben described as going together extremely well. Easily dominating the table (because, sometimes, size is everything) was Scott Harvieux's Ferrari 599XX, a 1/12th scale kit by APM from China. Resin with photoetched parts, the kit looks like a lot of fun to build with good detail, but man, that sure was big! Neal Engelman brought in the Lindberg/Model King '64 Plymouth which was also mostly a box-stock build, and representing Norm Nelson's '64 season with the help of Powerslide decals. And rounding up the Table for this month, Chris Vick brought in a WIP of the AMT/Model King Torino, also to use Powerslide decals, and a resin kit of a transport body to be turned into a Wood Bros transport. That's in for January - in February, time to come out for the next meeting and the Hope It Don't Snow Show in Rochester. See you then! ! PAGE 4
