SIZWE DHLOMO
!
VJ, MTV BASE, SABC 1
!
DJ, Y-FM
!
Slick MTV base video jock Sizwe Dhlomo is living his life to the full right now,
nearly five years after winning MTV base’s first ever VJ hunt in Africa. At 27,
Sizwe has achieved TV stardom and thousands of admiring fans, working in
almost every corner of the globe from Portugal to London, New York and cities
all over Africa in a tireless quest for everything that’s cool, musical and credible.
!
Sizwe has come a long way since his first taste of TV fame, which arrived when
he was appointed MTV’s first ever African VJ (video jockey) in October 2005.
Overnight, he was transformed from being a soft-spoken junior bank employee
to a fully-fledged MTV VJ, hosting his own weekly TV show – MTV base World
Chart Express. Sizwe beat thousands of TV wannabes at auditions in Durban
and Johannesburg to achieve his dream of becoming an MTV base VJ.
!
Five years down the line, the transformation to fully-fledged TV / Radio
presenter, MTV VJ and Club DJ is complete, with Sizwe now a seasoned
veteran of the entertainment business. Sizwe has fronted multiple different
MTV base shows including chart shows MTV base World Chart Express & MTV
Fanta World Chart, and co-anchored pro-social programme MTV base
Uncensored. He’s notched up the air miles for the channel too – traveling all over
Africa for MTV base, attending the MTV Europe Music Awards in
Copenhagen, Portugal and Munich, and visiting the US to act as an ambassador
for Africa’s favourite music channel. In November 2008, Sizwe also travelled to
Abuja Nigeria to cover the first ever MTV Africa Music Awards where he
presented the award for “Best Newcomer” to Nigerian sensation, Naeto C. then
co-presented with the rapper the following year to hand over the same award to
M.I.
!
Sizwe is currently the Creative Director / Presenter of South Africa’s biggest
weekly music TV show, LIVE, which airs on SABC 1 every Friday evening from
21:00 – 22:00. When not on the TV screen, he can be heard on Y-FM, GPs
Hottest Frequency, every Thursday at 9 am & 9 pm, then again on the popular
weekend show, Siz ‘n Scoop, every Saturday and Sunday 09:00 am – 12:00.
!
Sizwe is also a Hip-Hop / Rn’b club DJ who has rocked clubs
countrywide and MTV parties from Nigeria to Denmark.
!
Big-name people that he has interviewed so far include: Akon, Fat Joe,
Ne-yo, Jay-Z, Diddy, Nas, 50 Cent, Wyclef Jean, Foo Fighters, HHP,
D’Banj, Freshly Ground, Morgan Tsvangirai, President Jacob Zuma,
Kelis, PRO-kid, Bricks, Stoan, Jah Seed, John Legend, Sean Paul,
Zamajobe, O2, Kaysha, and 2-FACE Idibia to mention just a few.
Despite it all, he remains remarkably humble and down-to-earth. ‘I
don’t see myself as a star,’ says Sizwe, ‘just a guy who got lucky and
who’s face is on TV now and again. A few more people recognise my
face now, but other than that, I'm still the same person.’
!
Based in Johannesburg, Durban homeboy Sizwe uses his downtime to
make and produce his own rap music as budding rap artist ’Scatter
Brain’. Unfortunately, Sizwe doesn’t have too much time for making
music right now, ‘I love my music but I don't think it is something that
I'd look into in terms of a career at this point.’
!
Born in Durban on 21 June 1983, Sizwe matriculated from Kingsway
High School in Amanzimtoti in 2000 before embarking upon his
studies in computer programming at the Durban Institute of
Technology. He was working for one of South Africa’s biggest banking
groups when he resigned after being selected as an MTV base VJ
finalist, and bravely moved to Johannesburg in the hope of living out
his dream of becoming an MTV VJ. Muses Sizwe, ‘I still have to
pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming: I never dared to dream
I’d be able to break into the entertainment business – especially not for
MTV!’
!
The future’s looking bright for Sizwe Dhlomo, with a prominent role
at MTV base assured, he may even realise his biggest unfulfilled
ambition: to interview Eminem!
