AU TH EN TIC SIN CE 1819 EST. CIN CIN NA TI, OH a little about T he H ist ory of T in Cups in America made in america for over 190 years The History of Tin Cups in America kitchen each sip brings history to life! Used for food and beverage during the 19th century, including the gold rush era,the tin cup was used by civilians, as the family gathered around the campfire or fireplace, and the military to keep their rations warm during those frigid winter nights. These cups were considered ‘heavy-duty’, preserving their meals for days at a time when hunting or shopping wasn’t an option. Known as tin ware, tin cups were typically used to boil coffee or tea. Further, tin ware was often used to make a hearty stew or soup from the indigenous plants and animals in the region. Used by the United States Army through 1851, they held approximately sixteen ounces. In fact, the tin cup was considered the most important part of the soldier’s mess gear. Why, even washing one’s underwear was an important quality for such cups. Used before the canteen cups of WWI, their most common use was for boiling water from which all foods could be cooked. Perhaps gathering around the campfire was where such cups could mainly be found amongst civilians and the military alike. Along with such tin ware, frying pans, roasting spits, and boiling pots could be found to complete the cooking process.
