event at the Musselman Triathlon in Geneva, N.Y., in July,
while Umphenour is coming off a great second-place result
at Elite Nationals. And don’t count out two-time U23 National
Champion Ethan Brown, who is close behind with 30 points in
the series, or rising elite Tim O’Donnell (19 points).
2008 USA Triathlon Elite Series to
Wrap up in San Francisco
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second-straight year,
the San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island will host the
series championship of the USA Triathlon Haul to the Great
Wall Elite Series.
The race – the fifth in the 2008 series – is set for Saturday,
Nov. 8 in San Francisco, Calif. It will also serve as an ITU Pan
American Cup.
Heading into the race, 2008 Olympians Matt Reed and Julie
Ertel are in comfortable positions, having already secured
the 2008 series titles after impressive wins at the USAT Elite
National Championships in Portland last month. The elite
championship wins were worth double points, and with both
athletes having already won previous races in the series
(Reed in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Ertel in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and
Geneva, N.Y.), they have established insurmountable leads in
the point standings.
As the series winners, Reed and Ertel will each take home
$5,000 and another $5,000 from swimwear and sports apparel
company Speedo.
Don’t think that not having a shot at the overall title will deter
any of the remaining competitors from racing all-out in San
Francisco. A $40,000 total prize purse that goes 10-deep for
both the men’s and women’s races is still on the line, as is
another $10,000 to be split among the second and third place
male and female finishers in the series.
Speedo is also supplying another $5,000 in bonuses for the
top three U.S. men and women in the race and a $2,500
bonus to both a U.S. man and woman if they finish second in
the series.
The final start list for the race has yet to be finalized, but Reed
and fellow Olympian Jarrod Shoemaker are planning to race.
Three-time Olympian Hunter Kemper will not compete, as he
recovers from hernia surgery. Kemper won the San Francisco
event and the overall series title in 2007.
Look for Brian Fleischmann (50 points) and Joe Umphenour
(35 points) to compete and battle it out for the second and
third spots in the series. Fleischmann won the series’ third
On the women’s side, the start list may include Ertel – who
won the event and series in 2007 – in addition to fellow
Olympians Laura Bennett and Sarah Haskins. Haskins, the
2008 ITU Worlds silver medalist, is in second place in the
series (52 points), with Sarah Groff (30 points), Becky Lavelle
(27 points), and Bennett (27 points) challenging. Look for U23
National Champion and two-time U23 Worlds silver medalist
Jasmine Oeinck (22 points) to vie for a top-three position in
the series, as well.
About the Haul to the Great Wall Series
The five-race, draft-legal Olympic distance series is giving
triathlon fans a chance to see athletes who competed for
the U.S. Olympic Team and those up-and-coming athletes
who have their sights set on London in 2012. Each race also
includes a stellar international field of competitors.
The series features more than $800,000 in prize money.
Athletes must compete in a minimum of three events to be
eligible for the overall series title. If athletes compete in more
than three events, the top-three results will be included in the
point totals. Overall Series Prize Purse $20,000: Three Deep
– 1st $5,000, 2nd $3,000, 3rd $2,000.
Swimwear and sports apparel sponsor Speedo is also
providing $5,000 in bonus money for each race on the five-city
tour. American men and women who finish in the top three in
their respective races are eligible for the bonuses, with $1,500
going to the top finisher, $750 to second, and $250 to third.

on a plane to attend a Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF)
Mobility Clinic, hosted by Sarah herself. I didn’t tell anyone
what I was doing. I couldn’t tell anyone what I was doing.
Running was a worn out dream of many moons ago and
biking was simply an experiment gone wrong. Nonetheless,
curiosity had me heading south.
My name is Creighton Wong of Danville, and I was born into
this world as a congenital above-knee amputee (AK). I am
also missing a few digits on each hand and, some would
argue, missing a few screws in the head. On that warm March
Sunday morning in Del Mar, CA, surrounded by a dozen other

starting his triathlon career after recently loosing his leg.

a huge proponent of CAF. Here I was without a bike, without
a bike leg, and without a run leg. And she told me, “When
you are ready to race, let me know and I’ll take care of you.”
That is her way. Tri-Cal takes extraordinary efforts to provide
opportunities for challenged athletes to compete.
That Sunday I met Alan Shanken of Danville – a remarkable
below-knee amputee (BK) who is an absolute beast on the
triathlon course and one of the great mentors in the CAF
family. He reminds me all the time why we compete – to help
others. Additionally, he also happens to be one of CAF’s top
fundraisers. Yes, he does it all!

one of the top AK runners in the world and wanted to test
out the waters of triathlon. Now he’s hooked. Most recently,
he completed the Chicago Marathon at a sub-10 minute
per mile pace. However, the most striking part about Geoff
isn’t his athleticism, but his generosity in helping others with
physical challenges to walk and run correctly. He has set up
a community network for the physically challenged at UCSF
and has helped me make great strides in running – though I’m
still a work in progress.

My running guru Geoff had already signed up. Alan, the

HOW DO I WANT PEOPLE TO LOOK AT ME?
AS JUST ANOTHER RUNNER.
A car crushed my foot, but not my spirit. I run for my kids, for my health and for my soul. I train like a woman possessed.
I compete because there’s no greater high in the world. I have heroes but don’t see myself as one. I’m a runner, just like you.

Why should I wear a wetsuit
during my triathlon?
Increased speed, warmth, and safety are
but a few of the advantages of wearing a
made-for-triathlon wetsuit in an open
water swim. Triathlon wetsuits are
designed for maximum buoyancy and total
range of motion in the arms. A wetsuit’s
biggest advantage is that it keeps you
warm. Many triathlons would not occur at
the time of year they do if it weren't for the
wetsuit. Another advantage of wearing a
wetsuit is added safety. With a wetsuit, the
risk of hypothermia is greatly reduced. The
added buoyancy makes it is nearly
impossible for you to sink. While wearing a
triathlon type wetsuit in open water, stop
moving your hands and feet and you'll float
upright with the water at about chin level!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where do I put my race numbers?
At packet pick up you will receive several race numbers, bike
ties and safety pins. There are no numbers or tags for the
swim portion of the event. The bike number is secured to your
bike frame using the bike ties so road bike numbers are visible
from the sides. Helmet stickers should be placed on the front
and back of helmet. Bib numbers should be worn on the front
of the body and worn during the run portion of the event.
What is the water temperature at Treasure Island?
Approximately 60-65 degrees
I forgot my timing tag, swim cap, etc., where can I pick up
these items?
We have extra timing tag and swim caps available at the tent
located down by the large red start arch. Aqua Sphere will
also have goggles to loan out if yours break or you forgot
them, they will be located at the same tent for your convenience.
What products will be on-course?
Pre-Fill Stations: There will be two pre-ill stations in the transition area where you can ill your bike bottles with water or
PowerBar Endurance formula. There are also bars and gels
available for you to pack on your bike or run.
Bike Course: PowerBar Endurance luid and Water will be
available on the bike.
Run Course: The run course will have an aid station at the
turn-around with Water, PowerBar Beverage System, PowerBars, and PowerGels.
Gel Litter: Gel will not be on the bike course due to past problems with trash along the course. Communities are getting
upset that our sport is littering their neighborhoods so we ask
that you be courteous and pack your trash back to a receptacle or dispose of them on course at the provided cardboard
marked receptacles.
Is there inish line food available?
Yes. There will be an assortment of food and drinks located
in the food tent next to the massage and volunteer tents for
athletes and volunteers only.
Where can I watch race morning?
The looped course allows for participants to be able to see
athletes go by several times and cheer on participants through
out the entire course. During the swim you can view participants on the shorline near the red arch swim structure. After
the swim you can head over to watch athletes transition from
just outside the transition area and stay to watch them go by
on the bike course. You can also view athletes from California Ave and Avenue of the Palms Street. For the run you can
head to the inish line where you can view participants in the
International Olympic distance at the turn around by the inish
as well when the return to cross the inish line. On Sunday,
in the sprint distance watch the athletes crossing the inish
line raising their arms in excitement to receive their medals.
There are bleachers that spectators can enjoy free at the inish line.
Do you have a lost and found?
All lost and found will be stationed at the information booth
just outside the transition area. After the event you can email:
events@tricalifornia.com if you need to claim something you
have lost.
How deep do the awards go?

3rd place inishers. In the relay division, an award will be presented to each member of the top overall team in each category. Elite awards are given to the top 5 men and women
inishers. The cash purse is awarded to the top 10 elite men
and women inishers.
