Steese’s squads have had numerous qualifiers to post-season competitions since 1995, including the Division III New England Championships and the ECAC Championships. Steese, who is a United States Association of Track and Field Level I certified coach, has guided four student-athletes to 10 NCAA Division III Championship appearances. Stephanie Roy (javelin, 2000-02) competed in three consecutive championships, while David Moreton competed in the 2001 triple jump. In 2004, the program had its first two All-Americans, as Scott Macdonald (decathlon) and Brittni Stewart (javelin) both finished sixth in their respective events. In 2005, the Chargers claimed their highest finish, as Stewart was second at Nationals in the javelin as a sophomore. Macdonald also made his second straight NCAA championship appearance in the decathlon in 2005. Stewart received her third straight All-America award in 2006, earning a third place finish in the javelin at Nationals and finished her senior year as the school’s only four-time NCAA All-American, finishing third once again. The Chargers have also had numerous regional successes under Steese. Colby-Sawyer has sent at least one representative to the New England Championships in 11 of the program’s 15 years in men’s track and 12 out of 13 years in women’s track. The numbers are much the same for the ECAC Championships, as the Charger men have been to the ECACs six times and the women have had a representative in 11 different seasons. Steese, who also serves as the head men’s soccer coach at Colby-Sawyer, previously was the head girls’ track and field coach at Gilford Middle High School, and was also Gilford’s assistant coach for sprints and weights prior to becoming the head coach. Steese graduated from the University of Maryland in 1974, with a B.A. in German, and later earned his master’s degree in German Literature from Maryland. Coach Steese, his wife Cheryl and his three daughters Cameron, Julia and Georgia, reside in Wilmot, N.H. Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Throws Distance Eileen Corley Jeff McDaniel 4 2009 Season Preview The 2009 men’s and women’s track & field teams will feature 12 returners and 13 newcomers. The Chargers will look for continued success as they head towards the ECAC and New England Championships near the end of the season. In 2008, Head Coach Peter Steese had two men qualify for the ECAC Championships in addition to sending six men and five women to the New England Championships. Junior Caitlin Pond (Westborough, Mass.) earned all New England honors for placing seventh in the heptathlon event. This year’s squad will be very young and consist of only five seniors and two juniors. However, coach Steese is thrilled with the young talent he has brought to New London. The seniors leading the team in 2009 include Sean Ahern (Delmar, N.Y.), Ian O’Leary (Reading, Mass.), Ryan Laperle (Brooklyn, Conn.), Ashley Jackson (Athol, Mass.) and Julia Steese (Wilmot, N.H.). Last season, Laperle qualified for the New England and ECAC Championships. He is very strong at short distances and will strive to make another post season appearance in 2009. He already holds individual school records in the 100m and 200m. Ahern, O’Leary and Laperle enter ’09 as the record holders of the 4x100m relay. O’Leary set a school record in 2007 in the 800m at 2:01.5. Male athletes returning to the 2009 team include Matt Cole (Fiskdale, Mass.), Joshua Commey (Trade-Fair, Calif.), Jeff Cote (Saco, Maine), Stefan Didrichsen (New London, N.H.) and Tyler Murdoch (Lyme, N.H.). Coach Steese welcomes freshmen Gage Bensley (Kittery Point, Maine), Kevin Coyle (Bradford, N.H.), Tyler Griffin (Waterford, Conn.), Derek Lautenschlager (Jericho, Vt.), Kevin Meleshuk (Reading, Mass.) and Ernest Tabiri (Gilford, N.H.) to the 2009 roster, while sophomore Paul Trumper (Plaistow, N.H.) and junior Jonathan Espinal-Cabrera (Methuen, Mass.) also join the team. 5 2009 Season Preview On the woman’s side, returners include junior Caitlin Pond (Westborough, Mass.), and sophomores Amber Cronin (Buxton, Maine), Ashley Finethy (Alton Bay, N.H.), and Cassandra Monahan (Wakefield, Mass.). Newcomers include freshmen Achic Castro (New London, N.H.), Kellie Valentine (West Lebanon, N.H.) and Melanie Winsted (Yorktown, N.Y.). Pond enters 2009 trying to improve her school record in the pole vault which is 2.36m. Head Coach Peter Steese is very excited about the potential of this year’s squad and believes the newcomers will have an immediate impact on the team’s success. Furthermore, the veterans will continue to shine in ’09 as they try to break more records en route to the post season championships. The team will begin the season against some of the best Division I talent in the northeast when they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to participate in the Bryant Invitational. The season will also finish against the best athletes in New England at Springfield College with the New England and ECAC Championships. 2009 Colby-Sawyer College Track & Field Schedule Date Opponent March 28 at Bryant University April 4 Wildcat Invitational I at UNH 11 Eastern Conn. Yorktown, N.Y. 10 2009 Review The 2009 season was a good sign for the future of the Colby-Sawyer men’s and women’s track and field team. Several underclassmen and first year student-athletes contributed greatly to the success of the Colby-Sawyer track and field squad throughout the entire season. Several school records were broken and 11 athletes qualified to compete at the New England Championships. Freshman Kevin Coyle (Bradford, N.H.) led a cast of participants that performed well at the post season championships. Junior Caitlin Pond (Westborough, Mass.) and sophomore Amber Cronin (Buxton, Maine) each qualified individually to compete at the New England Championships held on May 1-2. Cronin earned a trip to New England’s at the Bryant Invitational on March 28, with a mark of 1.50m. Cronin continued her success in the high jump throughout the season, including a 1.55m jump on April 18 at the Springfield Invitational and April 25 at the TCCC Invitational, which tied the school record she set in 2008. Pond earned the trip to New England’s after qualifying in the Heptathlon at Holy Cross on April 16. She placed seventh out of 15 at the championships and had two third place finishes out of seven events; javelin (25.80m) and shot put (9.34m). For her top eight finish, she earned All-New England honors. Coyle had a spectacular season which started with a first place finish and a New England and ECAC qualifying distance of 13.49m at the first meet of the year. At UNH, Coyle qualified for both championships with a 6.66m distance in the long jump. Kevin earned victories in the long and triple jump events at the ECSU Invitational on April 11. Coyle set the first of three records in the long jump at the Springfield Invitational with a distance of 6.90m. He broke that record at New England’s with a jump of 6.92m only to surpass that mark at the ECAC championships with a distance of 6.97m. Kevin placed 4th at NE’s and earned All-New England honors. He also placed third in the triple jump (14.18m) at NE’s to earn All-New England honors. Coyle placed second in the long and triple jumps at ECAC’s earning 16 total points earning two All-ECAC honors. Prior to the championships, Coyle displayed his dominance amongst TCCC institutions. He took first place in the long jump and triple jump with distances of 6.85m and 13.87m, respectively. The 4x100 women’s relay team comprised of Cronin, Pond, senior Julia Steese (Wlimot, N.H.) and sophomore Ashley Finethy (Alton Bay, N.H.) qualified for New England’s with a time of 55.04 at the Bryant Invitational. The team improved their time at the ECSC Invitational to 54.74 and then at the TCCC Invitational to 53.98. The team placed 20th at the New England championship in 55.44. The 4x100 men’s relay team comprised of sophomore Josh Commey (TradeFair, Calif.), freshman Kevin Meleshuk (Reading, Mass.), sophomore Matt Cole (Fiskdale, Mass.) and senior Ryan Laperle (Brooklyn, Conn.) placed 13th at New England’s in a time of 44.87. Earlier in the season at the TCCC Invitational, the 4x100 team of Cole, Meleshuk, Laperle 11 2009 Review and freshman Tyler Griffin (Waterford, Conn.) set a new school record with a time of 44.32 en route to a first place finish in the event. The 63,000square-foot facility features a competition-size swimming pool (Knight Natatorium), field house with basketball and volleyball courts, an aerobics room, and racquetball, squash, walleyball and handball courts. There is also a fully equipped fitness center for team use, for individual athletes and for students’ personal fitness. Mercer Hall, which recently underwent a full renovation, houses the Ray Indoor Climbing Wall, as well as a human performance laboratory that provides computerized health and fitness assessments. Hiddenbrook Farm, a private facility located just 13 miles from Colby-Sawyer, offers box stalls, a private tack room, a 100’ x 200’ indoor arena, an outdoor ring, acres of turnout and miles of trails. Dedicated in October of 1999, the Kelsey Athletic Fields are some of New England’s finest. Featuring a 120 x 80 yard soccer field, a multi-purpose field and a baseball field, the surfaces and views are unparalleled. The soccer field features newly added bleachers with seating for 300 spectators to sit and cheer on the Chargers. Also included in the outdoor athletic facilities are the Kelsey Tennis Courts, recently refinished in U.S. Open blue, and Mercer Field, another home to Colby-Sawyer’s soccer and lacrosse programs. - 23 New England Championship Appearances - 18 ECAC Championship Appearances - 10 NCAA Championship Qualifiers - 2007 & 2008 TCCC Men’s Conference Champion - NCAA Runner-up in javelin throw - Three New England Champions
