acknowledgement of yet another
of our charitable ventures, a small
delegation of students and staff
were invited to Downing Street. The
‘Wig Wiggle’ day that was organised
in aid of CLIC Sargent, the charity

their national strategy, and that is a
wonderful accolade for our students
and staff.
Finally, we are continually looking for
ways to improve our communication
with parents and we have recently
launched SIMS Learning Gateway,
a portal that will deliver academic
and attendance information to
mobile phones. We are keen to
have as many parents using this
as possible, and we would also
like parents to shape the content.

H ouse Charity Day Raises Over £1,400 For Homeless
Students in Lumley House have raised £1,444.55
for the Folkestone Rainbow Centre from fund raising
events during their House Charity Day.
The House organised two events, a cake sale which
raised £325 and a sleep over in the main Academy
sports hall which raised £1,119.55.
S ell Out Dance Show Biggest To Date
The Tower Theatre in Folkestone played host to the
biggest Breaking Waves Dance Showcase to date.
With fifteen schools and dance companies from all
over East Kent taking part, over one hundred children
and young adults performed a collection of dance
genres comprising of jazz, ballet, tap, contemporary,
African, jive and urban.
Performances came from a number of schools
including The Folkestone Academy, Folkestone
School for Girls, Brockhill Park, Astor College (Dover),
The
Charles
Dickens
School
(Broadstairs),
Spires
Academy
(Canterbury) and Tower
School (Ashford) along
with primary schools,
Folkestone
Primary
Academy and Hawkinge
Primary Company. A number of dance companies
and schools also took part this year, including Instep
Dance Company, Elite Dance Company, Loop
Academy, Driven Dance Academy, Julia’s Studio and
Studio Six.
The event’s organiser Mrs Samantha Saunders, Acting
Head of Dance, comments on the show:
“This was yet again a very successful event with
such diversity of dance. The standard at which the
students performed was first class and demonstrates
the natural talent, ability and creativity we have in
the area. The passion and drive from all the dance
teachers is exceptional and I’m very proud to be able
to provide these young people with the opportunity
to perform in front of a sell-out audience!”

P arent Voice
My name is Louise Warburton and
I am the Parent Trustee of The
Folkestone All Age Academy. Part
of my role is to gather the views,
thoughts and ideas parents have
about the Academy and school
life and share this with the Board
of Trustees and the Academy
Management at both phases.
Academy
Parent Voice
I gather this information from parents by holding regular
Parent Voice meetings These are informal meetings for
parent and guardians to come along and chat with
myself and each other on all aspects of the all age
academy.
The last Parent Voice meeting was held in Term 2 and
was attended by a variety of parents with children in a
range of year groups. The subject brought up by a few
of these parents was the request for an online system
where they can check their child’s attendance, grades
and information. As of January 2015 a secure website
based communication portal (SIMS Learning Gateway)
has begun to be rolled out and is available to parent/
carers of Year 7 pupils. This will include attendance
information and assessment summaries as well as
the student’s timetable. In time we hope that the
website will be adapted according to the feedback
from parents so that it covers all of the information
requested by parents.
Instructions on how to access this for the first time
has begun to be sent out to Year 7 parents/carers.
Parent Voice will have a stall in the reception area on
Academic Review Day on Thursday 19th March along
with IT technicians to help you register and log on if
you have not done so already. The next Parent Voice
meeting will be held on Thursday 30th April at 6pm
(please meet at Folkestone Academy Secondary
Reception). If you have any questions or would like
to know more about Parent Voice my email address is
parent.voice@folkestoneacademy.com (please state
Parent Voice in the subject line of the email).
C ommunication Portal
Communication is the key to ensuring the
Folkestone Academy learning community is
working together to enable its students to reach
their academic potential. So, to supplement
the usual channels of communication with
parents and carers, The Folkestone Academy
has invested in the SIMS Learning Gateway (SLG).
This secure website based communication
portal allows parents and carers the opportunity
to view information regarding their children at
the Academy. The SLG provides parents and
carers with access to attendance information
and assessment summaries, as well as a
student’s timetable.
The SLG has the following benefits to parents
and carers:
• Instant access to personal information about their
children’s progress
• Compatibility with tablets and smartphones so
even the busiest parents can access information on
the move
• Access to historical information, such
attendance data and assessment reports
as
The website became live on January 19th when
the facility was rolled out to Year 7 parents. At
the next Community Academic Review Day on
March,19th, all parents will have the opportunity
to sign up to access the website.
Please look out for the ‘SLG’ helpdesk. This will be
clearly signposted on the day. In the meantime,
if you have any questions about the SLG, please
do not hesitate to contact the Folkestone
Academy in the usual way or email the SLG
helpdesk at: SLG.info@FolkestoneAcademy.com
S anta Fun Run 2014

A nti-Bullying Ambassadors
Meet our new Anti-Bullying Ambassadors. These
students were nominated by their peers last term to
be a point of contact in the Academy to help tackle
bullying.
The group took part in the Anti-Bullying Ambassador
programme, provided by The Diana Award and
supported by the Department of Education, which
provided tools to support students to feel confident,
motivated and inspired to stamp out bullying. Sara
Firat Gracia (pictured) was nominated the leader of
the group by the other members.
She will be working closely with teachers and other
staff to provide feedback from their regular meetings.
The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors will be visiting house
assemblies during Term 5 to talk about what they do
and how they can help students.
Issue Twenty One : Term 3 2015
Bussell
Miss Twyman - Acting Head of House
This term has been very eventful with some great
achievements.
A special mention must go to all of those that
received Academy Awards, particularly Lee
Churchyard. Lee won the prestigious award
from the Lynwood Residens’ Association for his
outstanding contribution to society. He decided to
share his £200 winnings between three charities,
Beach Buddies, Memory Makers and Tyson Road
Youth Club.
As I write this we are preparing for a new and exciting
event; the House drama competition in March
We also took part in the Community House day on
Friday 13th February. As always Bussell House have
shown a united front for both of these and continue
to demonstrate exceptional House spirit.
Lumley
Mrs Wood - Head of House
Lumley House worked hard to create a successful House
Charity Day to raise money for the
Rainbow Centre. From the stalls held
at pupils’ breaks we raised £325 and
many pupils, teachers and parents
contributed to the very successful
cake sale – thank you to all. Many
students spent the night sleeping out
in the cold during Lumley House’s
Big Sleep Out. The event was a huge
success and we had over 40 students
participating. The night included
building a cardboard shelter outside in the dark, listening
to a talk from a former homeless parent, a soup kitchen
and sleeping on the hard ground. A
big thank you to all parents and staff
who supported this event.
We are pleased to say we are still
leading the House Champion with
123 points and also the Late Ladder
with only 19 lates so far this term.
We are working hard preparing
our House Drama piece for the
upcoming
Inter-House
Drama
Competition on 12th March.
Foster
Mr Cavanagh - Head of House
As the halfway point of the year nears (already,
wow!), We naturally look to compare our progress
with the goals we set at the outset of the year. As a
house, attendance is bucking the Academy trend
and is in fact higher than it was at this stage last year.
Given the challenges, students should be proud if
they have managed to keep ‘in the green’.
Adam Shields and his Whacky Abus claimed victory in
the Fantasy Foster Christmas Challenge. He finished
on 3856 points, with Ryan Costelloe (3818) and
Mollie Southern (3572) close behind. Tiana McKnight
is currently the highest individual points’ scorer but,
after forays in the January ‘transfer window’, which
manager will claim the title at the end of the year?
Much of the past fortnight was spent making
arrangements for the House Community Day, which
saw Foster teaming up with Holmes and Horowitz. This
promised to be a fun day but one with a real sense
of purpose, as we
all ‘pulled together’
to make a positive
contribution to our
local community.
Dyson
Mr Green - Head of House
It is full steam ahead in the school attendance race
and we are only 0.1% behind the leaders, for having
the best attendance in the whole school! This is a real
plus for Dyson, and this will have a positive effect on
every pupils progress and attainment. Please keep
this going into Term 4 Dyson and congratulations to
the 20 students who still have 100% attendance,
and also to D2 and D3 who lead their termly race!
House Drama kicks off on March 12th and Dyson
will be looking to all our theatrical students to help
represent the house and earn points for House
Champion. Miss Canter has been pushing the
punctuality drive and we have already seen a slight
improvement in our lates. Remember, there is no
excuse for lateness- the early bird catches the worm!
Dyson pupils ended the term in and around
the Folkestone beach and harbour area, giving
something back to the local community. All students
(and staff!) cleaned up Folkestone with the help of
the Rotary club. I think this was a great way to end
the term and will really demonstrated the Dyson spirit
amongst the Folkestone Community.
Turn On, Tune In, Get Involved... 105.9 Academy FM Folkestone
Foale
Miss Lelliott - Head of House
We have welcomed the Foale House students
into 2015 this term. It has been a cold and dark
term so well done to all pupils who maintain 100%
attendance.
We invited Year 7 parents in for a coffee morning
and it was great to see the pupils reading and
taking part in tutor time with their parents.
Next term we are looking forward to our Open House
event on the 5th March and the House Drama
Competition where we hope to be successful!
Fiennes
Mr Platts - Acting Head of House
Term 3 has seen some significant improvements with
regards to the attendance and late ladder. Fiennes
House students have shown their commitment to
getting to school on time and coming to school
even when they are not feeling well.
This term Fiennes House students and staff have
been preparing for the House Drama Competition
which will take place in March; and will go towards
the House Champion leader board.
On Friday 13th February Fiennes House took part
in the House Community day where we went out
into the local community to help clean up different
areas in Folkestone and Hythe.
Unfortunately Fiennes House have not had a good
run of data this term with a decrease in effort and
progress in Years 9, 10 and 11. This has a negative
effect on the House Champion scores which means
Fiennes House have now lost the lead.
Holmes
Mrs Bradford - Head of House
Currently Holmes stands 4th in the Champion House
rankings! Of course Champion House is not the
be all and end all, however looking at the data
breakdown that contributes to the rankings there is
some disappointing reading. Attendance is really
letting us down; whilst other houses are improving
with attendance we are currently falling.
There is evidence that students who attend school
95% + achieve better grades and are more
confident in their social groups. Currently Holmes
students are at 94.1%, with Years 9 & 10 below 92%.
These are crucial years, where learning is being
missed that will be included in exams. I recognise
that at this time of year there are a lot of coughs and
colds flying about, but a sniffle is not worth missing
valuable learning time. On a more positive note we
have Max Capon to congratulate for another sterling
debating performance, along with many of our
outstanding dancers who took part in the inaugural
Breaking Waves show case. We are also preparing
for the first Inter-House Drama Competition, in which
I am confident we will shine out above the other
houses. I hope you all enjoyed the break and I look
forward to a successful term.
Horowitz
Miss Owen - Head of House
Firstly, Happy New Year to you all! And what a busy
start to 2015 it has been…
It was an absolute pleasure to hand out mock exam
grades at Consultation Evening and share in the
success of our Year 11 students so far. If the happy
faces I saw were anything to go by, we’re looking at
really positive grades in the Summer examinations.
I have been absolutely delighted that, after a rocky
start for attendance and punctuality – Horowitz are
back on top – leading for attendance with 95.1%
overall and one of the top 3 for punctuality. We now
look forward to holding our Open House Event for Y7,
8 and Y9 where parents are invited to attend and
take a look at some of the work being taken on by
the students in the lower key stages.
Looking ahead to Term 4 and with lighter nights and
hopefully warmer climates on their way, we will be
holding the Folkestone Academy’s first House Drama
event. Your support at these events is, of course,
hugely appreciated by the students and staff.
Issue Twenty One : Term 3 2015
B asketball champions
Congratulations to our Year 8 Boys Basketball team who
have been crowned Champions of Shepway 2015!
Over a two week period the boys played all of the
schools in the Shepway area. In week one the students
played Pent Valley, Harvey Grammar and Brockhill.
The students won all 3 games, with the most impressive
victory coming against Harvey Grammar winning 144. In week two the students played Marsh Academy
needing to win the last game to win the league, the
students came through with an impressive 13-0 win.
Coached by Mr Morsia he comments on their success:
“All students conducted themselves excellently, were
a credit to the school and emphasised the hard work
and great skill they have been showing in extensions
scoring 37 baskets over their 4 fixtures and conceding
only 3.” The player of the tournament was Josh Anslow
of Holmes house.
C atering Corner
A Folkestone Academy Hospitality and Catering
student, Sam Warburton, has recently won
the regional heat of the National Young Chef
Competition. The event organised by the Rotary
Clubs of Folkestone, Folkestone Channel, Hythe
and New Romney took place at the East Kent
College’s Folkestone campus. With six students
from Shepway schools taking part, they had to
prepare a main dish within a 90 minute time
frame with only £10 to spend on ingredients.
16 year old Sam took the winning post with
his dish of fillet of sea bass with rosti potatoes
served with green beans and parsnip puree.
The judging panel included Ann-Marie Jones,
Head of Catering at East Kent College; Daniel
Sangiuseppe from the Folkestone, Hythe and
District Hotel and Catering Association and
Kishore Sapkota, who owns the Gurkha Palace
in Cheriton.
Mr Andy Ferguson, Head of Hospitality and
Catering at the Folkestone Academy comments
on Sam’s success: “I am extremely proud of
Sam, he has a natural talent and I’m sure he
will be fantastic in the next round. I wish him the
best of luck.”
Sam was awarded with a certificate, a book of
potato recipes and £40 cash by Don Bullock,
President of the Folkestone Rotary Club. He will
now go on to take part in the regional heats
of the National Young Chef competition which
takes place on Saturday 14th February.

the Tower Theatre to represent the school in the Youth

K ent Trampolining
This term we played host to a qualifying round of
the Kent Schools Trampolining Championships
with ten schools from all over Kent taking part.
The Academy entered teams into the Year 7, 8,
9 and 10 categories competing at Novice and
Advance levels.
Well done to Jessica Pratt, Ryan Garcia, Ella
Leslie and Alexa Bail who qualified to compete
in the finals of the Kent School Championships
which take place on Thursday 19th March. A
special mention goes to Shannon Leighton
for her effort in the competition. Shannon
positioned 3rd and was so unlucky not to reach
the finals!
Max Capon, Misty Eagleston-Hill and Tom Laws – all
experienced debaters – delivered a rousing defence of
the proposition that ‘Western Museums should agree to
requests to repatriate cultural artefacts.’ This was the first
time the Academy has participated in the competition,
organised by local Rotary Clubs. Despite being narrowly
pipped to the post by the Folkestone School for Girls
and the Marsh Academy, all three debaters received
a certificate for their contribution from the MP for
Folkestone and Hythe, Damian Collins.

Doing the right thing
Over the past three years, the Sixth Form has really
benefited from being involved in the Speakers for Schools
programme set up to provide state schools with inspiring
talks from leading figures. Two years ago, Baroness
Wheatcroft, former editor of the Sunday Telegraph,
explained the role of the House of Lords and how the
wide-ranging life and business experience of the Lords
helped British laws to be fairer and more appropriate;
Last year, Roly Keating, Director of the British Library,
spoke on the role of the national library, the challenges
of storing every book published in the UK and on the
plans to digitize all books for everyone to access in the
future.
This January, we welcomed Sacha Sadan from Legal &
General to speak to our Sixth Form on Diversity of Thinking.
Sacha started by telling us that he was brought up in the
east end of London and went to a local comprehensive
school for boys where he faced the not so insignificant
challenge of being called ‘Sacha’. His family did not
have a great deal of money and indeed he has never
learnt to drive since money was tight while he was young.
Sacha studied hard at school, played football, which
he still does, and supported West Ham, a team he still
proudly follows as a season ticket holder.
Sacha’s hard work in school paid off and he was the first
in his family to go to university. While at university, Sacha
decided to work in asset management and applied
to the city to find a job. Sacha secured this position by
demonstrating an interest in and passion for working with
assets or things that individuals or companies own and
helping ensure that their value can be increased. He also
impressed his interviewer by following up the interview
with a letter rather than an e-mail as he believed and
still does now that a timely letter will always give a better
impression than an e-mail.
After securing that first position, Sacha progressed quickly
in the world of asset management and investment, an
area he has worked in successfully for over 20 years.
His current company, Legal & General, are well-known
for their insurance and pension services but are also a
leading investment company who currently manage
more than £473 billion in investments, more money than
the whole of Austria generated last year!
Sacha leads a team of people whose aim is for the
company to do the right thing. This includes investing
in the right companies, businesses, stocks and shares,
encouraging these organisations to be ethical or decent
in what they do and how they act. As an organisation that
manages nearly £500 million in assets, Legal & General
can make strong recommendations to companies such
as Tesco, for example, to clean up their act, and do the
right thing so as to bring back customer and investor
confidence which will in turn raise share prices.
During his talk, Sacha made the
recommendations to our Sixth Formers:
following
•Do what you are interested in or passionate about
•Aim high and believe that you can make it
•Write letters before and after a visit and make a good
impression
•Don’t be afraid of applying for jobs or universities in
London as there are lots of opportunities
At the start of the talk, I mentioned that there seemed to
be a key similarity between what a Director of Corporate
Governance does and what a Head of Sixth Form or
Headteacher does. Essentially, it is about doing the right
thing. My top recommendations are therefore:
•Choose the right subjects in Sixth Form
•Demonstrate the right work ethic by working hard and
handing in work on time
•Attend as many lessons as you can and don’t be late
to class
•Dress smart, act smart
•Think carefully about what you want
to do after Sixth Form and speak to
Mr Johnston or Mr Himbury about
how you can make that passage into
higher education, further education or
employment successful.
Wishing you a happy half-term.

C ancer Research Receives Cheque from Charity Day
Dyson House students at The Folkestone Academy
have presented a cheque for £353.19 to Cancer
Research after fundraising at their House Charity Day.
Dyson House collected the money from donations
after organising a sponsored Row, Run and Cycle event
along with a cake sale. Students also donated money
to wear something pink, a colour that is affiliated with
the cancer charity.
Stuart Green, Head of Dyson House, organised the event
with help from Tania Canter, Dyson House Guidance
Manager and encouraged students to come together
and support their House charity by taking part in the
planned activities. Stuart comments: “It was a very

Congratulations to our U13 Girls 5-A-Side

success they travelled to Ilford to compete in
the Regional South East Championships and

by our students as Cancer Research is a charity very
close to my family as well as other staff and student
families in Dyson House. Our students did Dyson proud
in their attempt to row, run and cycle to the pink city
of Toulouse! Other students were absolutely fantastic
throughout the day selling cakes, charity pins, and
bracelets and painting faces and nails pink. I would
also like to thank Cancer Research UK for their support
with the event, and we hope to raise more money for
our House Charity in the future.”
The money raised was presented to Elaine Hadden, a
volunteer at the Folkestone Cancer Research shop and
will go towards supporting the national charity caring
for people with cancer. Elaine comments:
“We really appreciate the donation from the Academy,
thank you to everyone that helped raise this money.”
C VQO
This term the second group of Academy students who
took part in the CVQO 12 week programme received
their BTEC Level 1 Certificates in Teamwork, Personal Skills
and Citizenship. During the course students organised
fund-raising events, took part in team building exercises
and participated in a life-saving class.
In their group they positioned a respectable
6th. Special mentions go to Dasie Savage
(Year 8) and Hermione Galvin (Year 7) for their
teamwork and continuous mature approach to
each game.
On Thursday 19th March (Academic Review Day
2) we will be holding our second Futures Fair in the
main sports hall at the Academy.
The fair will be open to students and parents to give
them the opportunity to talk with a variety of national
employers, leading universities and colleges with the
aim to expose them to the many exciting areas of work
and studying that are available to them.

Academy FM’s New radio Science project
Academy FM Folkestone has just heard it has been
successful in securing another grant from the Welcome
Trust to run another science project. The last project
involved Academy students recording radio interviews
with scientists and doctors, who answered questions
on many aspects of science and medicine. We also
hosted a Science Day during the holidays, which was
the first time such an event had been held in the
Academy.
The new project is an expansion on the original
one. This time we will also include Primary Academy
students, and will work with many children from Key
Stage 1 upwards to help them develop their curiosity in
exploring scientific topics. As part of this they will create
pictures, stories, and spoken pieces for radio broadcast.
The children will discuss their creations on air and also
interview local professionals about science questions

experiments and also take part in debates. Its a great
way to open the minds of young people to the roles
that science and medicine play in our society. If you’d
