POETIC REVIEW
heart.
Without a doubt, once you have experienced the creative vision
of The Nxt LeveL - his poetry, his music, his name and the
emotional substance of each piece - you will confirm that you
have been propelled to “The Nxt LeveL”.
T
he Nxt LeveL, aka Mario Coleman, surfaced onto
the spoken word scene in 1996 with his provocative,
romantic poetry. His blend of passion filled romanticism continues to stimulate and burn on the hearts and minds of
today’s women. The Nxt LeveL writes and speaks as if each poem
was crafted and designed especially for each woman. His blend of
poetry is said to be, “disarming, arresting, atmospheric, visual and
very intimate.”
Whether online or at a live performance The Nxt LeveL’s fan
base has remained loyal. They continually yearn for more. Hearing their pleas and wanting to take his words and message to
the next level, Nxt envisioned the unique concept of intertwining his romantic poetry with original colorful musical tones, hot
beats, vocal harmonies, and dynamic tempos that compliment
each other perfectly. Out of this union of words and music, his
premiere cd Back To Intimacy was born.
On Back to Intimacy, Nxt
will take you on a journey of
discovery. Through messages shared through poetic
prose, you will be empowered, enlightened, inspired
and encouraged. As the
bass line ridden tracks
and smooth vocals enter
your eargates, the musical
lyrics and Nxt’s imaginative tongue will penetrate
your intellect, beginning a
thought process that will
allow you to view love and
intimacy with a new set of
eyes and a strengthened

Lydia Caesar
SAY THE NAME, HEAR
THE MUSIC…
She walks into a room and
commands your attention.
She opens her mouth and
makes people smile. She takes
the stage and you will never
forget her. Lydia Caesar is an
experience. An artist who can
truly sing without the vocal
tricks and studio manipulation.
A songwriter who pens songs
with heartfelt words from
beginning to end and the stage
presence of an icon.
Lydia’s not your typical Urban/
Pop bombshell. Her music is
soulful and edgy filled with
colorful pop/rock musical
tracks, energetic guitar riffs,
intense drums and melodious
hooks. Her records are timeless, ageless and colorless.
“Music is a way of life. It’s in
me. I write what I live. I want
people to hear my music and
say, WOW! I’ve gone through
that or I feel like that. People
relating to the music is the
key”.
Born and raised in Hollis,
Queens, Lydia is one of four
children of a Jamaican mother
and father with St. Lucian
roots. Her strong musical
church going family lead to her
singing. At the tender age of
four, Lydia was singing in front
of hundreds of people at Bethel
Gospel Tabernacle, the church
founded by her grandfather
and where her father serves as
the bishop.

Lydia’s star power has garnered
the crown of several New York

very blue moon an
artist is so underrated
that many ask where
did they come from and why
their music is not been played
on every radio with a speaker!
Monica Monet knows that
good music is like a pot of
gumbo. You can’t rush the
process for it to be good. It
has to be slow cooked.
Monica Monet’s music is just
that - slow cooked with a
whole lot of uncut raw vocals
just to your liking. No over
process vocals here. Just passion and a whole lot of soul.
With all this passion in the
cooking pan. Monica Monet
is releasing her first Live CD.
This album was recorded at
Stay Tunes Studio in Jackson-
But it doesn’t stop there.
Monica Monet pushed the
envelope when she teamed
up with 3:16 Productions and
recorded the Whole Night
on her very first live dvd. It’s
definitely getting hot for Ms.
Monet and she’s just starting
to cook.
Be sure to get your plate of

H
ello everyone! My name is Kiara Sade Rodriguez, also known
as simply “Kiki.” I am a student at Pitt Community College
majoring in Computer Programming and Liberal Arts, and
I’m a barista at Starbucks. Not only that, I truly, truly love supporting
independent music every single day. I take time out of my daily schedule
to promote good, honest music. Here’s a thing about music: Music has to
be real in every aspect, including voice, lyrics, quality, and most importantly, EMOTION.
A music artist has to feel emotion when singing a certain song; that way,
listeners can feel some kind of connection with the artist. The emotion
from the artist must be real; if it’s not real, then the listeners will hear
and see that, and they will never be able to feel a connection with the
artist. Also, music is supposed to be shared and heard, not just in one
area or state, but GLOBALLY. Share the good music, and pass it on! Be
a part of the movement!
Currently, I have a blog on Tumblr
that I created in August 2012
titled SONGS IN THE KIKI OF
SOUL, on which I promote the
latest and the best in indie soul
news here: http://songsinthekikiofsoul.tumblr.com. I am also a
representative of a very special Nu
Soul artist, whom I love dearly,
Gloria Ry’ann. She named me the
president of her fan club (which is
coming soon) last year! Finally, I
am beyond blessed to be a part of
a very wonderful independent soul
community, Nu Soul Collective/
Future Soul Sessions.
I was so excited to find out that I
was a part of the executive committee, and I still am excited. In
September 2012, I was chosen as
the SOULhead of the Month. Big
things are definitely coming up
this year in 2013, and I am ready
for it! Nu Soul Collective/Future

bring every soul lover out there the

hat the world knows now is an emergence of
another “Sol” train movement. But this time it’s
on popular radio. Serena Sol Brown has the hottest
internet radio show “worldwide”, broadcasting out of the city of
brotherly love. The industry is calling her the “Queen Of Indie
Music”! Why? Because Serena Sol Brown gives love to every
genre of music all over the world - R&B, soul, latin, hip-hop,
reggae, jazz, gospel, and pop.
Comics, Poets, and
Authors, all have a
place to call home! In
fact, she was the first to
create a live segment for
comedians called Laugh
Out Loud “LOL”
featuring such acts as
Rodney Perry (from
the Monique Show)
and Kevin Hart. The
trend took off like crazy
and mainstream radio
has patterned similar
segments after her
success with the LOL
segment. Ms. Brown
aims high and is landing right smack dab in
the middle of the most
exciting moments of our time.
Ms. Brown is a graduate of The Ohio State University.
Through her undergrad experience at Howard University,
Serena discovered that she could bring a dynamic formula to
the table when asked to self- produce a radio show for a local
station in the Philadelphia area. Her success was bound to make
an impression on the masses once she combined her background in Psychology , Broadcast Journalism/Communications
and her love for music.

“The Serena Sol Brown Show,” now three years old, has taken
the world by storm. Everyone who has connected to Serena’s
groove is ready to climb on board every time the show airs. She
calls it Jazzy, Sexy, Sol music! It’s the new “Sol” train bringing you
worldwide entertainment for two exciting hours every Wednesday from 3pm-5pm est.

COVER STORy
ome say soul music is
the eccentric beat of a wellrounded music lover. It inspires,
reminisces and revolutionizes thought and progress in so
many directions. While soul
music is known for its groovy
stylings, there is undoubtedly a
message always within. Immediately, Marvin Gaye comes to
mind. From Mercy, Mercy Me
to What’s Going On, Marvin
Gaye used soulful serenades and
background vocals while addressing political indifferences,
environmental hazards, equality
rights and economic disparities.
Other artists and groups have
similar change driven top hits:
Change Gonna Come (Sam
Cooke), Ball of Confusion (The
Temptations), Strange Fruit
(Nina Simone), Living In The
City (Stevie Wonder), Greatest
Love of All (Whitney Houston)
that documented gentrification,
rises in crime, government and
education injustices and even
civil rights.
We’d be remiss to leave out the
Marley legacy, but for this instance, we will say they are reggae, not soul. Without a doubt,
music has fueled the resiliency
of our people. Specifically
soul music, which is a skilled
infusion of jazz, gospel, R&B,
and pop, has taken the best
from each of those genres and
provided healing to everyone
that listens. The pure faith of
gospel, the syncopation of jazz,
the storytelling of R&B, and
the comfortability of pop all
lend to the good feeling that is
felt when you hear soul music.
Blending all these aspects with
sincere, skilled writing has made

still are doing this.
Music is therapy, and there are
very few artists that put the right

happiness, thought, and change.
It takes an artist that shares the
experiences of their life, good or

the healing of soul music through

SOUL STYLE
Fit for the New Year
T
he dawn of a New Year
brings new resolutions
for all, with one of the
most popular involving a new
love for fitness and incorporating it into our daily lives. There
are many facets to fitness and
once the New Year brings new
motivation, we all want something fun to keep us going on
our fitness track. During a
search for such workouts, we
want to introduce Joslyn Mays
who is a Certified Personal
Trainer, Zumba Instructor
and Pole Fitness Instructor, all
within the last year. Allow us
first to provide a brief description of each.
If you have never attended
a Zumba class, you are missing
out on a fantastic time. For 60
minutes, participants dance
to various music by following
the instructor’s lead. Zumba is
Latin-inspired, so you can expect to do Salsa and Merengue,
but it also includes Reggaeton,
Bollywood and many other
international rhythms and music. Each “Zumba Party” is so
much fun, you don’t realize you
can burn up to 550 calories!
Pole Fitness is a full body
workout which increases
your flexibility, endurance
and overall strength with a
concentration on your core
and upper body. Providing a
hint of sex appeal enhances
self-confidence and allows
women to push pass their
limitations. Created for women
of all shapes and sizes, pole
fitness is also one of the top
fitness crazes that bring fun
and excitement to your fitness
regimen.
Hiring a Personal Trainer is
by far one of the most reliable
ways to stick to your fitness
goals for 2013 as they can pro-
vide you with nutritional info
and exercises that assist you
with reaching your personal
fitness goals. The accountability is greater and there is
nothing like having someone
there to explain to you what
is best for your body and
helping you to reach them
in the fastest yet healthiest
way possible.
About a year ago, Joslyn
was coerced into taking
a pole fitness class with a
co-worker and fell in love
with it instantly. Months
later, she was approached
about becoming an
instructor and has been
teaching various classes at
Fantasy Fitness Studio in
Redford ever since. Losing her
Dad to Cancer in
October, 2010 which, she
gained personal responsibility
for her Grandmother, Lizzie,
who suffers with Alzheimer’s
and Dementia.
Almost a year later, her
Grandmother made a repeated
escape attempt from her caregivers and Joslyn took time off
from work to ensure her proper
care, treatment and safety. In
an effort to release some stress,
Joslyn attended a Zumba class
and enjoyed it so much, she
researched teaching it.
In January 2012, Joslyn
became licensed to instruct
Zumba Basic Level 1 and 2,
and soon after added Zumba
Gold and Aqua Zumba to the
list.
Wanting to increase her knowledge, Joslyn attended school
to become a Personal Trainer. Realizing that she wanted to focus
solely on fitness and stepping out on faith, on August 6, 2012,
Joslyn left Corporate America behind. Almost a year later, she
has no regrets as she prepares to celebrate one year operating as
an independent contractor through her business, Amaysin Fitness.
To stay in the know for current classes and events that Joslyn
will be hosting and/or attending, you can “Like” the Amaysin
Fitness page on Facebook. Pole Fitness, dance and other fitness
classes including Zumba taught by Joslyn and other awesome instructors are online at www.fantasyfitness1.com . Joslyn’s personal
Zumba website, joslynmays.zumba.com always lists locations and
times for all types of Zumba classes and her personal website for
all information will soon be found at www.amaysinfitness.com.

THE SOUL OF HOUSE
A
n Introduction to
House Music Charles
Berrin, Host and RDJ
on the Saturday radio program
“Charles International House
Music” and the Monthly
House Party at Annie’s Art
Gallery in Camp Springs, MD
“I`ve never been to Chicago,
I wanna go to Chicago, State
I`m in, too much sorrow,
I wanna go--to Chicago!”
“Chicago,” by Arthur Baker.
House Music, what the hell
is it?
It depends on who you ask.
Recognized by its characteristic repetitive beats that seem
to place eargasm just out of
reach, with melodies that can
sound almost identical, and its
seemingly endless tracks, and
the appeal of house music can
be difficult to explain to people
not already addicted to the
music.
However, now that so many
popular DJs have merged
many other styles and genres
of music (such as rock, dub
step, and soul) into the typical
house music mix, the genre
is no longer locked into what
the uninitiated stereotypically
hears as an endless repetitive
track.
House music has developed
into a potent mix of world music, soul, and electronica that
keeps his listeners captivated.
So, again, what is house music?
18
If you ask a few people,
depending on where you are,
the answers may be confusing.
If you are in Greece, and ask
clubbers who listen to DJ Eve
Trelokoritso, they will describe
tech house. In another location, speak to someone who
goes to hear DJ Davy Nataf
in with Paris or Tel Aviv, you
will undoubtedly receive a
hip-house answer. As one
more example, if you asked me
and I were going to hangout
with DJ LEX, DJ Le Mause
or DJ Radu in Romania, our
conversation would definitely
be around Minimal or Deep
house. With all these genres,
House music can be bewildering and difficult to navigate.
In 1977, Alan King decided to
be his own deejay. Never having deejayed before, and with
one turntable, the University of
Chicago Lab Schools student
put on one 45 rpm record after
another. The party loved it,
and he was smitten. This was
the beginning of his deejaying
around his neighborhood and
at high school parties.
King couldn’t wait to awaited
his 18th birthday so he could
hang out at the warehouse
nightclub, where the crowd
was primarily black, Latino
and gay. King is not gay, but
he fell head over heels in love
with a style of music that was
played at the Warehouse and at
some of the other gay clubs in
the city.
And thus another house music
deejay was born.
House music was a style that
mixed records that were almost
totally bass-driven with a heavy
beat that grabbed you and had
you on the dance floor dancing
with abandon.
In the early years of House
music, a leading article in the
Chicago Tribune newspaper
in 1986 reported the following: “Forget New York`s Hip
Hop scene. These days, the
country`s hottest dance music
is being made right here at
home. And just about everybody seems to want a piece
of Chicago`s raw, muscular
House Music. It throbs from
the speakers at the hippest
dance clubs in New York and
Europe. House records crowd
the dance charts in Billboard
and other trade magazines
and, at some Big Apple record
stores, House records outsell
Prince and Janet Jackson dance
mixes.”
House music is all grown up
now, with all the constraints
and restrictions that come with
being a good citizen and acting
adult. “Much like jazz, rock
‘n’ roll and the blues, it has in
many respects been co-opted
by the dominant culture, where
you have people like David
Guetta, Daft Punk and Tiesto
making millions of dollars a
year off of it under the label
EDM, or electronic dance
music,” King said
King speaks the truth. The top
10 Electronic Music DJs made
more last year than the entire
roster of the LA Lakers—yes
House music is all grown up
now. Oh, I wont leave you
wondering what these DJs
made--these 10 DJs made a
whooping $25 million dollars.
Yes, there is no question about
it, House music has matured
and is alive and well.
Techno emerged in Detroit,
Michigan in the United States
during the mid-to-late 1980s.
Hip house, also known as Rap
house, mixes elements of house

co-featured with Umar bin Hassan of the Last Poets.
He wrote the title track for Grammy-nominated guitar
legend Robben Ford’s Supernatural album and has had

Heights.”

Pieces to watch for this
spring are flowing, relaxed
clothing that give you the
feeling of ease and freedom. Your big statement
accessories are here to stay!
And ready your feet for the
kaleidoscope of color in foot
wear that will burst with
beaded and jeweled flats
to chunky heels, sandals,
wedges, boots and loafers.
Pantone announced that
Emerald is the official color
of 2013. This
sophisticated and radiantly
lush color (in my opinion)
tops last year’s beautifully
spirited
Tangerine Tango.
Brilliant in color, this
precious gemstone in many
cultures and
religions signifies the color
of growth, renewal, and
prosperity.
Fashion: In fashion this
year the evidence of green
will not only make a strong
statement for women’s apparel and makeup, but men’s
attire as well.
Beauty: Get bold! Bring a
little drama to your makeup
by adding some emerald
green to your eye shadows,
nail colors, and hair accessories to inspire a hint
of nature to your everyday
flare.

Wear it to
complement rich egg
plants, ruby reds, peaches
and pinks. If you’re afraid
of a little color,
consider
Emerald as the
life of the party.
It can add life
to your soon to
come spring,
summer and well
into fall and winter attire.
