The fact that there would be about 100 rough sleepers about 800 couch surfers and approximately 600 men who live in shared accommodation. There would also be about five Women’s refuges and six youth refuges that are generally always full. Few would also realise that Newcastle has the 3rd largest prisoner release in Australia seeing over 800 prisoners being released every year into Newcastle. I also just read that Newcastle was recorded as having the largest domestic violence statistics in Australia. Most people are surprised and are totally unaware that we have such needs. Soul Café is just one of many of the organisations that work on the coalface of this front and are vital to our community. Not only in meeting the needs but bringing awareness to our community that together we might meed the need. So at Soul Café we make it part of our work to include various groups and individuals in working with us as volunteers. Young people from schools, companies and organisations are part of our volunteer crew. Also having the opportunity to speak at Rotary Clubs, schools, churches, and business groups creating awareness and sometimes resulting in support for Soul. Working with Karen and Donna, apart from that seeing instant good being done as people come together with the simplicity of a meal, a cup of tea and a chat. Q. Favourite childhood memory? A. Lots of love from my Nana and starting my apprenticeship and riding/walking each day to work was a proud moment. Each day is a great memory in motion. Q. Most embarrassing moment? A. Too many to remember but I can’t tell you as it’s too embarrassing. Q. Signature dish to eat or cook? A. I always struggle with this question as I don’t really have one. I tend to cook instinctively with the limitation of what is available at the time—like me it’s simple but delicious. Hand made sweet potato, pumpkin, pinenut and ricotta ravioli with burnt butter sage and a sprinkle of parmesan. Thank you for our new oven from Kiwanis
