Just ask Sabine Price, her daughter Addie, and grandson Sebastian who received it on May 10, 2009, at the dedication of the 14th house completed by Colville Valley Partners. Sabine and her family were all smiles as they accepted congratulations and gifts from those who came for the dedication ceremony and tour of the house. Besides several bedding plants brought by visitors, gifts included the Certificate of Occupancy presented by former Kettle Falls Mayor Jerry Davis, the house keys presented by Board Vice President Ken Bensimon, a Bible and a gift certificate from the affiliate presented by Christine Thomas, a specially made quilt for Sebastian presented by Margene Coates, and a cash gift from P.E.O. presented by Louise Stevens. The ceremony began with opening remarks by Board President Lee Stevens, a prayer by Pastor Lee Roy Holmes of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and a song of consecration led by Board member Joe Coates. Special acknowledgment of all the volunteers who helped build the home and the contributions by many companies of gifts in kind was made by Lisa Meddock, affiliate operations manager. Will Bruce, Pastor Holmes, and Larry Page participated in the blessing of the home. Sabine then had the opportunity to thank everyone for their help throughout the building process and express the gratitude of her family for enabling them to purchase a new home with an affordable interest-free mortgage. Refreshments donated by members of the Board of Directors were served as visitors toured and admired the house. The next homes to be built by Colville Valley Partners will be in Colville at the Victory Park location. The affiliate is currently in the process of selecting two families for the next homes, and it is planned that development and construction of the park will begin later this year. THRIFT STORE CELEBRATES 8TH ANNIVERSARY Board of Directors: Lee Stevens-President Each year on the Thrift Store’s anniversary, April 21, we celebrate our volunteers. This year we had a delicious meal at the store catered by Dolores Johnson, one of our honored volunteers. She and Parry Patterson shared the honor of each having served over 900 hours for last year! Parry also earned cash for us by turning in her hours to the corporation that her husband worked for before retirement, which was a welcome bonus. Our meal was followed by awards for each attending volunteer and a short talk by our President Lee Stevens about Colville Valley Partners future Victory Park building project. We sincerely appreciate all the help that our volunteers provide; and, while we average about 40 different volunteers every month, we always welcome more! Contact our store manager, Judy Rarrick, at 684-2319, if you are interested in making this commitment. We unveiled the plans for the Victory Park complex of homes to be built behind Wal-Mart. The Thrift Store celebrated its 8th successful year with a volunteer dinner. We dedicated House No. 14 and the family moved into it on Mother’s Day! You will read more detail of these events in this newsletter, but I also want to announce that our affiliate office administrator, Lisa Meddock, has been promoted to operations manager of Colville Valley Partners. She is our primary contact with all of our volunteers, WA State Habitat for Humanity, and Habitat for Humanity— International. We have also hired Jason Simpson, as our ongoing construction manager to get us started on the Victory Park project and continue with the building of several homes on that site as funds become available. Picture Here We will have some new officers and some new directors starting their term of office in July. I hope that you will give them the same support and encouragement that the current board has received. Together we can accomplish much, even in these rough economic times. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do to help provide simple affordable homes for those in need of decent housing. Lee Stevens, President, 2008-2009 Overlake Students Volunteer on House 14 Inspire Excellence. Develop Intellectual Curiosity. Teach Responsibility. Embrace Diversity. Foster a Compassionate Community. These are not just the words from Overlake School’s mission statement but words they live by, and for their 2008-2009 “Project Week” they shared those values with us. These 16 students and faculty members made the 9-hour journey from Redmond, Washington, to spend a week in Colville working on house #14 in Kettle Falls! What a rewarding experience for all involved. As the week came to an end, many students expressed the desire to come back and help with our Victory Park project as well. Volunteers are such a vital part of Habitat for Humanity, putting shelter on the hearts and minds of people to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness. With the aid of our many volunteers , this is Overlake students assist with made possible. HFH-CVP welcomes volunteers from all final touches on house #14 Students share a slice of Pizza during their “project week” walks of life to help support our mission. on their last day.
