For The Parents, Students, Faculty, And The Community Of Palm Beach Gardens High School Bi-Monthly Volume 18 Issue 5 February 2011 Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Students, Administration Principal Larry Clawson Assistant Principals Leonard Coleman Tara Dellegrotti Michelle Fleming Jerry McAdoo Dr. Richard Williams Community School Director Arty Falk “Gator Tales” February 2011 Published Five Times Per Year Palm Beach Gardens High School 4245 Holly Drive Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 Issue # 5 The second semester is well upon us, and it is always an academically intense time of year. I’d like to explain some of the changes that are taking place with the tests that students must take to graduate. In the past, students have taken FCAT Math and FCAT Reading in 9th and 10th grade; passing the 10th grade FCAT has been part of students’ graduation requirements for several years now. FCAT will now slowly be replaced by End of Course exams in specified subject areas. This year, our freshmen will take the Algebra I exam instead of FCAT Math. Also, our sophomores will pilot the End of Course Exam in Biology. If you have any questions about these changes, I encourage you to contact your student’s Biology or Algebra I teacher. On the athletic field, we are looking forward to spring sports, especially our softball and baseball Preseason Classics, taking place the first two weeks of February. For details on these events, and any other athletic or school events, I encourage you to visit our online activities calendar at www.highschoolsports.net. Our softball team has achieved a remarkable three state championships in five years. We look forward to cheering them on to victory once again! In closing, I would like recognize some of the exemplary educators who are our school-level nominees for some prestigious awards. We are delighted to recognize Mrs. Jennifer Evans as our nominee for the Macy’s Teacher of the Year Award. Mrs. Evans, a math and special education teacher, has been with us since 2000. She is widely admired among the faculty for her compassion for students. Our nominees for the Dwyer Award, our local teaching award, are Mrs. Meredith Caro in the category of Regular Education, Mrs. Karen Kummerlen, in the area of Career and Technical Education, and Mrs. Carolyn Bruce for Special Programs. All three of these ladies exemplify teaching excellence, and I am proud to have them as our nominees. We are fortunate to have many, many outstanding teachers in the Gator Family! Sincerely, Mr. Clawson Visit our Website @ www.palmbeach.k12.fl.us/PalmBeachGardensHS 2 MAGNETIC ATTRACTIONS! We are delighted to announce a new Five Star Magnet Program tradition: the first annual magnet 5K road race will be taking place in April! At press time, we are still working on a name for the event and securing a date, but details will be made available on our website, www.fivestarmagnet.org, as the sophomore Sports Management and Recreation students work them out. We hope to have the race in April, so there’s plenty of time to start training! Speaking of our website, have you seen our bold new design? Magnet alumnus Sean Reed, Global Business and Entrepreneurship Magnet Class of 2004, has provided web design and hosting for us at no charge for several years now. It is incredibly gratifying to have a stellar former student as a business partner! We love seeing the success of our magnet graduates! Springtime is the big time for students in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), the national student organizations that are the competitive arm of our Pre-Medicine and business magnets, respectively. Currently, our business magnet students are engaged in testing and performance events; HOSA regional competition is at the end of January. We look forward to seeing our students progress to state-level competitions in April! Seniors in the Tourism, Hospitality, and Resort Management have been completing a novel project: they are redesigning an existing Palm Beach County beachfront hotel with a specific market in mind. Students created promotional kits complete with press releases, brochures, pricing, and ad campaigns. The students enjoyed participating in this unique project and viewing the final gallery of products! Pre-Medicine Magnet juniors have begun their clinical rotations at Manor Care. “Cliinicals” are a unique opportunity for students to apply their classroom knowledge with real patients. Our hands-on clinicals make our Pre-Med program unique in the school district! Pre-Medicine Magnet seniors enrolled in First Responder are also completing their clinicals this semester. Their clinicals, with Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue, involve ride time on ambulances answering calls. We are grateful to the city for their continued partnership with us. At this time, the application deadline has passed, but late applications are available in the magnet office and will still be accepted. Current magnet freshmen wishing to switch magnets for next year should see Mrs. Pence in room 2-111. 3 Valentine’s Day Candy Grams Parent Updates Help support the Class of 2014 by purchasing a sweet for your sweet! The Freshman Class Council will be selling Valentine’s Day Candy Grams until February 11th. Their competition team went south to Homestead, Florida and competed in Varela High School’s field meet. Their performance was almost flawless; they won trophies in almost every category, including: personnel inspection, armed drill, unarmed drill, track, academy and color guards. After the impressive victory in south Florida, the team went north and competed in their last field meet of 2010 at the Gold Coast Field Meet held at Boca Raton High School. Once again they displayed their battle efficiency and went back home with a lion share of the trophies. Their present team understands the terms: team work, commitment, and preparation. Also, the Palm Beach Gardens High School NJROTC team provided a helping hand to the community by working with Habitat for Humanities. They participated in the building of a house designated to be occupied by a low income family that survived a very selective qualification process. The cadets assisted in the building of the roof, windows and walls, as well as the clean-up of the area. The cadets also volunteered and assisted the Mollie Wilmot Children Health Care Pavilion with their annual Christmas party for underprivileged and medically challenged children and family. They directed traffic, parked over 900 cars and provided crowd control for well over 1000 people. Palm Beach Gardens High School NJROTC program also successfully passed their annual inspection with many accolades and a final score of outstanding. The inspection was performed by Patrol Squadron 30, Maintenance Officer, Commander Daryl Pierce on December 2, 2010. He praised the cadets for being very sharp, professional and impressive. We can all agree those words sum up the cadets at Palm Beach Gardens High School. NJROTC Cadets from PBGHS program help build a house with Habitat for Humanity.
