This month’s meeting…..
Our next meeting of IPMS Tidewater will be on the first Friday of March —the 6th. As
usual we will be meeting at 6:30pm at the Virginia Air and Space Center
(www.vasc.org) but feel free to come a bit early to chat.
Joe Koenig will cover any pressing business. The demo for this month is undetermined as nobody has come forward. Thus we will proceed with Chip’s suggestion that
we should give Scott "unlimited time during show and tell to describe his latest in absolute and exhausting detail in sotto voce while wearing a garter belt sans clothing.
Show n’ Tell will follow under the strict time limits imposes by Generalissimo Koenig. I
am sure that those who traveled to the Old Dominion Open will be bringing their winners in for everyone to admire..
After our show n’ tell where everyone shares their current and completed projects we
will have our monthly raffle, presided over by raffle master Scott.
After we finish loading all of the raffle kits in Bob and Gary’s trunk, we will then retire to
Anna's (www.annasva.com/annas_3) to finish the evening with good food since, judging by our waistlines, we never miss an opportunity to eat.
Old Dominion Open Report
The 2015 Old Dominion Open was held in familiar territory at
the Richmond Raceway Complex. Coincidentally, there was a
doll show next door to the model show where the out of shape
women went to shop while the out of shape men shopped the
vendors - kind of a feng shui. As always, the Richmond members put on a well run show with lots of vendors. Special compliments to Chaz Klanian, who has worked to get corporate
sponsors for the awards, raffle prizes and models for all of the
best of winners - well done. There were a total of 130 entrants
with 600 models on the tables and tons of walk-ins of all ages.
The vendors were well stocked as were several private sellers
who realize the size of their stashes are far outstripping their
building pace.
Our members were well represented come award time and the
awards presentation highlight was the pronouncement of a
Geek Chariot as winner in the mounted figure category.

Tom Jett wound up winning Best Armor and Best of
Show for his 1/16 FT-17 Renault Tank - well deserved
and congrats!

Some of the major exhibits include the
first flight worthy 747, Concorde number 214, a D-21 drone and the only remaining M-21 “mother ship” and the
original prototype 737 on loan from,
and in the markings of our very own
Langley Research Center.
Originally beginning exhibits in 1965, the Seattle Museum of Flight opened in its current
location in 1983 after the “Red Barn”, original home of the Boeing Company, was moved
and renovated.
Some of the major exhibits include the first flight worthy 747, Concorde number 214, a D
-21 drone and the only remaining M-21 “mother ship” and the original prototype 737 on
loan from, and in the markings of our very own Langley Research Center.

Other Exhibits in the museum are Full Fuselage Trainer, which is the shuttle mockup used to train all
Space Shuttle astronauts, an interactive Air Traffic Control exhibit overlooking Boeing Field runways and
a large amount of Boeing history.
But probably the most interesting exhibits to us modelers are the two Holtgrewe Model Collections. The
personal works of Dr, H. Logan Holtgrewe include 153 1/48 Scale WWI aircraft built over 4.5 years and
over 400 1/72 Scale WWII aircraft built over 7 years, a production rate that puts mine definitely to shame.

can likely occupy at least a days’ worth
of viewing, if not more, and I would
highly suggest visiting if you’re in the

1:1 Scale Painting
Way back in November Scott Bregi, Clint Mills and Tom Jett were asked to return to The Transportation Corps Museum on Fort Eustis to do some more 1:1 scale painting. This time it wasn’t a full vehicle as was the case a while back when we a larger group painted an entire M60 in NATO CARC colors. This time the Museum needed help painting on the bumper codes and unit designation for their
M4A3 Sherman and the aforementioned M60.
Before putting paint to tank, Scott, Clint and Tom had to do a bit of research. Using the Museums extensive library, the group was able to come up with the appropriate numbers and units to use. The
Museum had stencils for
the numbers but it was up
to Scott a make a
“triangle-shaped” armored Division symbol
for both from masking
tape. Finally it was time
to get painting. Well it
was colder than a well
diggers ass that day in
November but our intrepid model geeks were prepared and completed the
Sherman, but because of
the cold, the spray paint
was going on very runny
and took forever to dry,
so they couldn’t do the
M60. They’ll wait for
Scott didn’t choose
Spring to return and finish
the M60.

If you’re interested in participating in the future, you will get your chance. The TC Museum has asked
for the Club’s help on several preservation projects large and small. The Virginia War Museum has also requested our help to restore and repaint both an M60 and an M42 Duster in their outside display
areas. They have also advised they will soon take ownership of
a 40mm Quad Gun Mount from the famous USS Missouri, that
will require some refurbishment. So if you want to be part of restoring and preserving a piece of history … stay tuned to the
