TENNIS CLASS

more details.
Traditionally, a ten year anniversary is honored by a gift of tin. The Stingrays
swim team, however, deserves much more recognition than that. Just in the past
month alone, all of the swimmers participated in the annual swim-a-thon, logging in over 107 miles. Eight year old Molly Brennan swam a total of 80 lengths,
over a mile, in just an hour! But, that is just the beginning of the Stingrays’ accomplishments. Both the swimmers and Coach Jennifer Heyer-Olsen have been
awarded some of most prestigious honors in
youth swimming.
Coach Heyer-Olsen, a member of the Illinois
Swimming Hall of Fame and recipient of the
coveted Bruce Woodbury Award, brings over
30 years of coaching experience to the Stingrays. She is well-known by her swimmers as
passionate, hard-working, demanding, a great
cook, and their biggest fan. Her coaching has
brought great success to the team with over
40 swimmers making regional, state, and national times in 2014. The team also carries a
strong tradition of preparing swimmers for high school and collegiate level swim
programs. Stingrays have gone on to swim for University of Chicago, Wheaton
College, Bentley, Denison, UIC, Michigan State, Illinois State, Yale University, Cornell University, to name just a few.
But, the heart of the Stingrays doesn’t just lie in the awards received. The Stingrays’ testimonials speak to the true strength of the program. Ashley Bunce, who
has been with the Stingrays since its inception, says “Stingrays is challenging and
you have to work hard on the team”, but it’s great preparation for “real life.”
Ashley is an accomplished swimmer, but she points to the friendships she has
made and the encouragement she’s received as the best part of being a Stingray.
Similarly, Emma Rogers Sims describes her experience as a Stingray as vital for preparing her to face problems head
on. “The sport of swimming can be very challenging at times, and things don’t always go the way you plan for them.
Coach Heyer pushed us to never give up and saw all that we were capable of and reminded us of that all the time.”
Sims believes that she would not have stuck with swimming if it weren’t for Coach Heyer-Olsen and her teammates.
Alexa Simoneau echoes Sims’ and Bunce’s sentiments. She not only felt prepared
to be an accomplished swimmer, but also to be part of a team and work hard. Both
vital skills for whatever career path she chooses. Her brother JT, a four time state
qualifier and conference record holder for University of Chicago, shares her opinion,
crediting his training with the Stingrays as vital for preparing him for his future. “I
know that the skills I learned from swimming will be immediately applicable to the
business world. Swimming teaches you to work hard, to set goals, and to understand
that success falls on those who earn it. All of these skills are essential to success in
the professional work place.”
After ten years, Stingrays has a lot to be proud
of, not only has the program produced many
accomplished swimmers, it has also helped nurture lasting friendships and
character. As past Stingray Jessica Wellick said, “Stingrays was my second family. Some of my best friends and memories I have were with the Stingrays swim
team.” It is encouraging to see the next generation of Stingrays have the opportunity to grow into strong swimmers and strong people.

RACQUET STRINGING TIP OF THE MONTH
What is meant by string gauge? String
gauge refers to the thickness of the
string. Strings vary from 15 gauge
(thickest) to 19 gauge (thinnest).
Thicker strings offer more durability
and a little more control, but less feel.
Thinner strings offer more power and
feel, but they can break more easily.
Thinner strings also make it easier to
create spin. The most common string
gauge used is 16.
