Around the Pitches
The U11 Green lost to Rosebud (1 – 3). We may have lost today but the coach (Derrick) and the Team Manager (Elizabeth) were very happy at the big effort from our players to work as a team. The goal was scored by Mason Bosdorf, which was assisted by Aaron Haverfield. Congratulations to Oliver Kipnis for great game today. Superb efforts from Jackson Walley and Jobe Berends in goals -‐ great diving! U8 boys lost to East Bentleigh Stingers (2 – 3). It was a tough game in the cold and we were against the strong wind in the first half but we never really got going with any momentum and lost a couple of goals to East Bentleigh -‐ I think the early start was a shock to the system of the boys. In the second half with the wind in our sails we got our act together although losing another goal. In the last 10 minutes it was all Stingrays with Karl Neubauer scoring 2 quick goals but with only 2 minutes left on the clock at the last restart we ran out of time with the ref blowing the whistle maybe a few seconds early -‐ another 5 minutes and Karl would h ave got his hat trick for sure. We left our run too late, in the end it was a great team effort to get two goals back but for the next game we have to start with more passion to get the ball and not be left to make up goals like we did today. A big thanks as well to Liam Mulligan-‐Peters and Aaron for doing the goalkeeping today, it is good that so many of the b oys are keen to give it a go. The U13D defeated Baxter (2 – 0). This was the most rewarding win so far this season because there was a massive team effort put in by ALL the p layers. The b oys adapted to the heavy conditions, everyone did their job, passing was thoughtful and accurate, and our defence was strong. What an outstanding goal from a corner kick to Nathan Drozdek and another goal to Ned Pyne. U11 Wallabies romped home defeating Brighton (10 – 0) on what can only be described as extremely challenging gale force conditions. The first half saw a relentless and u nforgiving onslaught by the Stingrays on the Brighton defence so much so that it only took 3 minutes before our first goal. Samuel Curtis slotted in the first of many for the Aspendale Stingrays. Brighton’s defence was all at sea as the S tingrays kept p iling on the pressure with Jeremy Lockerby, Luke De Gregorio, Finn McCall and Max Reindel maintaining the constant forward pressure. The floodgates opened and then the goals just poured in. Our midfield kept threading and feeding our forwards with dashes of brilliance b y Adam Bartosy, silky skills of Guy Toomer and a ton of resilience and never die attitude of Tom Wilcock. Midway through the first half a Jack M ogensen corner used the wind to his advantage landing it in the back of the net. Then a late half penalty taken by Jack saw the Stingrays go into the half-‐time break leading 6:0. The second half started with Aspendale kicking in to the gale force wind. Our boys could have been excused for sitting b ack and letting Brighton come at us but we held firm. Our defence has become a “rock of Gibraltar” in recent weeks which starred with the solid Declan Ford who swept everything away that came near him; Samuel Curtis just ran h is legs off (as he u sually does) all day with accurate and precision passing; Kalian Smith (back after his mid season Bali break) was steady and didn’t miss a beat. Unfortunately, as Brighton valiantly tried to muster some forward attacks they just couldn’t get passed our defensive wall. We managed many forays into the opposition’s half creating many chances resulting in a further 4 goals. Special mention to: Jack Mogensen scoring his first hat-‐trick of the season; Jobe Berends playing in goal for the first half who d idn’t let anything pass and Luke Neville who h elped out Brighton by playing for their depleted team. Goal scorers: Jack M ogensen 3; Adam Bartosy 2; Samuel Curtis 2; Guy Toomer 1; Jeremy Ockerby 1; Finn McCall 1. Around the Pitches cont…
U14 boys lost to undefeated top team Hampton United (3 – 1) in a hard fought match in the rain and mud. Cole Ryan scored our only goal. Best Players: Cole Ryan, Noah Berends, Matt Self, Jordy Athanassiou and Jasper Smith. U11 Girls defeated Chelsea FC (6 – 0). Fantastic goals to Maeve Conry 2, Kayla Welsh 2, and Lina Nakovska 2 Well done to both teams for putting up a great display in some rather cold and harsh weather conditions. On this occasion Aspendale Stingrays captained by Josie Guarino came out with lots of commitment and quickly gained the upper h and. All good team movement starts with a good defence and today the Stingrays defence were turning resolute defending into attacking opportunity with some excellent passing to our attacking midfield and wing players who were on fire today, delivering plenty of opportunity for the Stingrays forward line, the Stingrays were rewarded with one goal in the first half and with more of the same excellent play second half added 5 more goals to the score line. Club Zip up Hoodies $40 Place orders to dlepair@me.com The U11 Maroons defeated Hampton (3 -‐ 1) with goals to Joel Schoorman, Harry Swinton-‐Lee and Max Lioudvigov. Both the U10 boys and U15 boys games were cancelled due to ground conditions. The U9 boys and U17 boy’s teams had a bye. www.aspendalesc.com The Mordy Sporting Club is one of our main club sponsors for this year Osgood-‐Schlatter’s Disease -‐ a cause of knee pain in children Who does Osgood-‐Schlatter’s disease affect? Usually highly athletic children aged 9-‐16 are affected by this condition due to the immaturity of their skeleton. With increased tension at vulnerable parts of the skeleton, such as where the knee cap inserts at the top of the shin bone, there is more of a risk of Osgood-‐Schlatter’s disease. What is Osgood-‐Schlatter’s disease? A condition where the patella tendon becomes stressed causing small fractures at the attachment point, which can lead to a visual bump at the top of the tibia (shin bone). Pain is felt in this region and it may also b ecome swollen. Activities which irritate this condition are jumping, running, squatting, and going up or down stairs. How can you tell if your child has this? Consulting your P hysiotherapist should be the first step to rule out other conditions or musculoskeletal injuries. An X-‐ray may show small fractures at the top of the tibia if it is positive for Osgood-‐Schlatter’s disease. What do you do if your child has Osgood-‐Schlatter’s disease? Rest is the immediate response. If your child continues to strain the tendon and its attachment then the condition may worsen. Other irritating factors must also be avoided for the proper healing process to take place. Ice and either anti-‐inflammatories or pain relievers may help for pain during this rest period; however consult with your Physiotherapist before giving your child any medication. Gradual strengthening and stretching may be introduced as the symptoms subside. Return to prior level of activity will vary from child to child, however it may take a few months to return to sport. If you have any further concerns or queries regarding Osgood Schlatter’s Disease, please feel to call us and a free assessment can be arranged if necessary.
