Published by the SRHS Student-Teacher-Parent Organization (STP) Principal’s Update In this Issue… Brad Coscare!i, SRHS Principal, bcoscare!i@srcs.k12.ca.us, 528-5292 Dear Parents and Guardians, Calendar…………………....3-4 At the end of October, Santa Rosa High School conducted our Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) visitation. Seven members of a WASC team spent four days meeting our staff, students and parents, visiting classrooms and observing our school culture. They were pleased with our WASC report and left impressed with our student spirit, facilities and school community. We will receive their final report and recommendations in the next few weeks. I want to thank all of my teachers and staff members, students and parents who helped write our school report and took time to clean the school and meet with the visiting team. SRHS Foundation…...18-20 Athletics……….………...21-22 SRHS has been chosen as one of only nine institutions throughout the nation to participate with award-winning, nationally acclaimed historian Ken Burns. Seventy students will watch a webcast featuring his new documentary on the Dust Bowl. This is an interactive webcast, with students actually being able to ask Mr. Burns questions. Our Social Sciences department, with Mr. Dave Franzman and Mr. Art Horner, have been working with KRCB and the Sonoma County Museum in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution to bring this to our school! SRHS is now hosting the Sonoma County American Philharmonic. They had been holding concerts out of the Wells Fargo Center for the last few years, and after meetings last year, fell in love with our facilities and decided to make a change. We are proud to have them at our school. We are hosting the ArtQuest College Day on November 29th in our North Gym. This is the third annual event, in which our students get to meet representatives from different colleges. We have students every year who are accepted on the spot to a college or university based on the representative reviewing their portfolios! Continued on Page 2. SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL, A CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL PAGE 1 THE SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER! NOVEMBER, 2012 Principal’s Update, CONTINUED We are having our CHOICES program for our freshmen students presented on November 14-15th. On October 18th, we participated in a statewide emergency drill. This was our first major drill of the year, though we have practiced fire and earthquake procedures already. In case of a major disaster, please remember that following our school safety plan, we will have all students and staff located on Nevers Field. Student pick-up will be through the student parking lot only. Please make sure the information on your student’s emergency card is up to date and speak to your child about your family emergency plan. Remember, stay active and involved in your child’s education. Keep up communication with teachers and counselors. Make sure your child is getting enough sleep and eating healthy. Ask them if they are using their planners to keep organized. Check their homework and reports. Take advantage of our free after-school tutoring for all students in all subjects, Tuesdays and Thursdays in room 143. NOVEMBER, 2012 Counselors’ Corner Blaire Murphy, Counselor 528-5302 bmurphy@srcs.k12.ca.us Financial Aid Workshops for College-Bound Juniors and Seniors The cost of post-high school education is on the mind of most parents. With the college application season in full swing, parents and students are looking for ways to supplement college savings accounts. There is no one source for all scholarships, and seeking financial aid is a time-consuming task. Students and their parents are invited to attend a special workshop on financial aid and completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) on December 11th at 6:30 p.m. at Santa Rosa High School (Presentation in English in the Multi-Purpose Room or in Spanish will be in the Library). A representative from a college financial aid office will be there to answer specific questions and provide advice regarding the financial aid process. Bring your questions. This is a very informative and helpful evening. Scholarships For scholarship information, please see the SRHS “Scholarship Alert,” available in the counseling office and on the SRHS website under “counseling.” The websites that we recommend for scholarship searches include: www.fastweb.com www.scholarships.com Letters of Recommendation Seniors planning on asking for a letter of recommendation from their counselor for college applications should allow a minimum of three weeks for their requests to be filled. Waiting until the last minute is not in anyone’s best interest. Please see your counselor for information. Santa Rosa Junior College SRJC registration for spring semester classes begins December 10th. Students interested in taking an SRJC course should fill out the SRJC online application, and consult their counselor about the necessary paperwork and to choose appropriate classes. The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) ! Juniors & Seniors: November 6 (English), November 7 (Math) Sophomores & Seniors: March 12 (English), March 13 (Math) Oral Grade Week is November 5-9 Teachers will be letting students know their grades. If a student’s grade is a “D” or an “F,” a progress report will be sent home in the mail. The Home Access Center (HAC) can also be used to check grades and attendance on our District website (www.srcs.k12.ca.us). Your password may be obtained from the counseling office. Are You Concerned About Grades? • Regularly discuss with your child how they are doing in their classes and ask if they are having any difficulties. • Ask about homework and help with homework when possible. • Encourage your child to use their student planner to write down assignments and stay organized. • Your child can pick up a “Progress Report” in the counseling office and have each of their teachers complete it on Fridays. • Encourage your child to communicate with their teachers regularly. • Contact teachers for an update. • Encourage your child to attend the free tutoring after school (see below) Free Tutoring Free tutoring is now available to any student seeking support! Tutoring is every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00–4:00 in room 143. A list of SRHS and SRJC student tutors is available in the counseling office. Student tutors charge a small fee for their services. SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL, A CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL PAGE 5 THE SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER! NOVEMBER, 2012 School News Social Science Juniors to Visit Cost of Freedom Tribute The Social Science Department at SRHS is taking the entire junior class (nearly 500 students) to the Cost of Freedom Tribute in Sonoma. The Vietnam Veterans of Sonoma County and Sonoma Veterans are hosting the American Veterans Traveling Vietnam Wall. This is an 80% replica of the Vietnam Veterans Wall from Washington D. C. Many of students have friends and relatives who have been affected by the Vietnam War and are related to survivors of this conflict. This is a real teachable moment in our history. Also on hand will be 25th Infantry Division Huey Helicopter, guest speakers, laying of the wreath by tribute officers, Mare Island PBR, Military vehicles, SWAT and firefighters. This has been made possible by the generous donation from the Santa Rosa High School Foundation. Dear Parents/Guardians of SRHS Athletes, The SRCS Board of Education recently adopted a new Board Policy regarding athletics and credits earned based on active participation in a CIF sponsored sport. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding the new policy and the process we plan to follow to implement the new policy at SRHS. If you are eligible for the Physical Education credits per Board Policy 6146.11, please be aware of the process that will be followed at SRHS: • • • • • • • • • • Coaches will keep a record of positive attendance for all participating athletes through the course of the season. At the end of the season, coaches will provide the Athletic Directors (Jake Fitzpatrick - Girls A.D. & Gary Dellepere - Boys A.D.) with the positive attendance record. The Athletic Directors and coaches will sign one master Request for Physical Education Credits for Interscholastic Athletics form and provide that to school administration along with the verified positive attendance record. Assistant Principal Mr. Nealley and Vice Principal Ms. Baldenegro will receive the master list of students who have met the attendance criteria (must have fewer than ten non-medical absences) from the Athletic Directors. They will also receive one master Request for Physical Education Credits for Interscholastic Athletics form which is signed by the Athletic Director and coach. Students that want to apply for the physical education credit need to see Mr. Nealley or Ms. Baldenegro for clearance and obtain the signed form within ten days of the end of the regular season. (Deadline for application dates will be posted in the Main Hallway Athletic Showcase). The student will take the signed form to their counselor to verify they have met the additional requirement, which is prior completion of ten credits of P. E. If eligible, the counselor will keep the form and enter the P. E. credits for the student. Please remember that the student will only qualify for the credits if they have already completed ten credits of P. E. Please contact Mr. Nealley at 528-5344 or Ms. Baldenegro at 528-5293 if you have any questions. SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL, A CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL PAGE 6 THE SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER! NOVEMBER, 2012 School News, CONTINUED IMPORTANT NEWS REGARDING SCHOOL SPORTS AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION CREDIT *Recent revisions to Board policy now allows eligible students to earn up to ten (10) P. E. credits for successful participation in interscholastic athletics. Students must meet the requirements: • Already earned 10 P. E. credits, preferably during the freshman year. • Be enrolled in grades 10, 11 or 12. Grade 9 is not eligible. • Participate on a team at either the Varsity or Junior Varsity level. For example, a student can play a sport as a sophomore on a JV team and earn 5 P. E. credits toward graduation. The student can play the same sport on the Varsity team as a junior and earn another 5 P. E. credits. • Actively participate and successfully complete a season of sport in a CIF-sanctioned sport: Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Swimming/Diving, Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball and Wrestling. No other sports are eligible for P. E.P. E. credit under this policy. • “Actively participate” means to consistently engage in at least 2 hours of physical activity per practice and participate on the day of competition. Due to facility limitations, an enrollment cap may be placed on a sport in order to allow for active participation. As determined by the coach. • Do not exceed 10 non-medical absences during the season of sport. This shall be verified by the coach through team attendance records. • No retroactive credit allowed. For example, a student in grade 10 who participated on a school team in grade 9 cannot apply for and receive credit for the past year’s participation. • Complete and submit a Request for Physical Education Credit for Interscholastic Athletics form in a timely fashion. The form must be submitted no later than 10 school days after the end of the season of sport. For spring sports, the deadline is no later than the second Friday in June. NOVEMBER, 2012 ArtQuest Jan Sofie, ArtQuest Director 528-5070 X6765, jsofie@srcs.k12.ca.us 19th Annual Fall Showcase Best-Attended Ever! About 1,000 people attended the 19th Annual AQ Fall Showcase, which focused on what ArtQuest is all about and on the vision and culture of the program. Beginning in the Auditorium with a welcome by emcee Annie Samuels, AQ English teacher, attendees were treated to a Wind Choir from Instrumental Music, with student conductor Ann Bjorkquist masterfully guiding the ensemble. Inspired by this year’s AQ theme, Chamber Singers sang a gorgeous Renaissance piece in French, by Kira Bombace, Vocal Music director. AQ Director, Jan Sofie honored Miles MacDiarmid, AQ VFA student and presented a check to him for $250 on behalf of Friends of AQ for the image of the alligator Mardi Gras King and Queen he created for the AQ Mardi Gras Ball. Nicole Jeffries, Mardi Gras Ball chairperson, gave details about the fundraising event and announced that tickets were now on sale at Brown Paper tickets. Inside ArtQuest, the touching documentary produced by 2012 graduate Amy West with her Video Arts crew, was screened next, showing what students think is significant, and sometimes surprising about AQ. The “How to be An ArtQuest Kid Back-toSchool Fashion Revue (this year with a Renaissance twist!)” clearly demonstrated the diversity, creativity and artistic spirit of AQ and how it’s expressed in many different ways. The Auditorium part of the evening concluded on an exuberant note with AQ Video Arts students Maneesha Moua and Chris Snyder’s music video, An ArtQuest Feeling, that featured students and faculty singing and dancing to Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling” in classrooms, offices and all over the school. The evening continued in various venues with in-depth looks at the curricular and instructional approach of all eight Arts Specialty disciplines as well as the opportunity to talk with the AQ Core teachers, a SRHS counselor and AQ students. HUGE thanks to Friends of AQ for all their support and magnificent volunteer assistance! AQ “Shadowing” In Full Swing && & & Students potentially interested in attending AQ beginning next Fall 2013 may “shadow” an AQ student for a day this fall, now through December 7, on Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays only (with some “blackout” dates). Students must have an appointment in advance to shadow and appointments are limited. To make a shadowing appointment, call AQ at 535-4842 and please remember to cancel if the student cannot make it. (Important Note: Current SRHS students may not attend the regular Shadowing program; instead contact the AQ Office in Room 21 in the Arts Complex or call 535-4842 to arrange a “mini-shadow” of an AQ specialty class only). Fall 2013 AQ Application Packets Available NOW! Fall 2013 AQ Application Packets are available now at either the AQ Office in Room 21, of the Arts Complex or the SRHS Main Office for students who would like to join the AQ magnet program for the Visual and Performing Arts. Application Packets contain detailed information about the program and the application process, as well as pertinent contact and transfer information. PRIORITY DEADLINE: Friday, January 25, 2013 (for best choice in specialty area acceptance, earliest notification and inclusion in all AQ Spring events, including the AQ Registrations). DEADLINE: Friday, February 15, 2013 (to be eligible for acceptance decision made before the end of the school year). AQ Visual Fine Arts & AP Studio Art Classes Visit SFMOMA All levels of AQ Visual Fine Arts and Advanced Placement Studio Art students visited the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in October to view the museum’s permanent collection. Teachers Brooke Delello and Aleta Thomas wanted to make sure students visited SFMOMA this school year because the museum will be closing next spring for three years of extensive renovations. “We wanted our students to get a first-hand look at the museum’s noted collection of well-known modern art works and artists shown right here in our own backyard!” Ms. Delello said. Students were also able to view the large-scale sculptures shown in both the enclosed and open-air spaces of the Rooftop Garden. Third Annual ArtQuest Arts College Day Set For November 29 November 29 will bring the 3rd Annual ArtQuest Arts College Day to our campus, including representatives from many prestigious and well-known arts and liberal arts colleges, universities and departments, schools such as California College of the Arts, Cornish College of the Arts, Mills College, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Pacific Northwest College of Arts, San Francisco Art Institute, Santa Fe University of Art & Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago and more. Multiple presentations in various venues, an arena-style information area, portfolio reviews and audition information will be featured. Students will receive more information at school. SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL, A CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL PAGE 11 THE SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER! NOVEMBER, 2012 ArtQuest Sonoma County Museum Visit for Digital Arts The Beginning/Intermediate Digital Arts class recently visited the Sonoma County Museum to view the Enrique Chagoya exhibition, "Death and Taxes in Fantasylandia” on a docent –led tour. Many of the works in the exhibition originated after the collapse of the stock market in 2008 and are personal reactions by the artist to the economic crisis. The artist focuses on social and political issues, using both satire and humor in his work, but he states that “Art does not change the world, but the people through civic actions do.” Digital Arts instructor, John Sappington commented that the students enjoyed the museum and were inspired by the somewhat controversial content of the work. Chagoya is currently Professor of Art at Stanford University. His work has been shown internationally and is represented in the collections many major museums. The class also viewed the “Day of the Dead” or El Día de Los Muertos exhibition, referring to the holiday that celebrates the lives of loved ones who have died. The exhibition focused on the altars, which are designed around offerings of things that the dead enjoyed most in life, including food, drink, and even music. It is said that on November 1 and 2 the dead joyously return to visit the living. “The White Snake” To Connect to AQ Theme for English Classes In late November ArtQuest English teachers Casey Elsa, Hollis Fennen, and Megan Whyte, along with other SRHS teachers Nathan Good and Jessica Dennis, will be taking students to see the play, The White Snake by Mary Zimmerman. The play received rave reviews when it was first performed in Ashland last season. The AQ theme, Renaissance, will weave in and out of the curriculum in many ways this year and The White Snake subtly addresses this theme through its plot. The story is a Chinese folktale about a white snake that is capable of shape shifting but spends most of her time separated from society studying and seeking enlightenment. One day she decides that she wants to learn more about humans and to do so, chooses to transform into a human. Her rebirth, a kind of renaissance that springs from a desire for knowledge, leads her into a relationship with a young man. A romance develops and is later threatened by a monk that disapproves of the inter-marrying of species. Zimmerman is a Tony Award winning director that is seemingly most comfortable with the classics and often reinterprets them in new ways. Many AQ Theatre Arts patrons and students will likely sense some of the similarities between this production and last year's Advanced AQ student performance of Zimmerman's Metamorphoses. “Vitruvian Virtues” is Focus for Dance Company Performance AQ Dance Company’s first concert, “Vitruvian Virtues” will be held in the SRHS Auditorium on Friday, December 7 and Satueday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m. and at a matinee on Sunday, December 9 at 2:00 p.m. AQ Dance instructor Nzinga Woods comments that the show will explore concepts connected to this year’s ArtQuest “Renaissance” theme and the importance of the multi-faceted intelligence of creative beings. The performance will include student choreography informed by many interpretations and aspects of renaissance ideas, including the Roman writer, architect and engineer Marcus Vitruvius Pollio’s concepts of “Technology, Function and Form.” The concert will also feature many dance styles including hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, Salsa-Rueda, ballet and more. Tickets are available at the door. Please join us! Call the AQ Office at 535-4842 for more info. Sounds of the Season Ring Out at Vocal Music Holiday Concert Get into the holiday spirit with the Winter Choral Concert which will be held for two nights in a row this year on Friday, December 14 and Saturday, December 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the SRHS Auditorium. NOVEMBER, 2012 SRHS Foundation, CONTINUED 17th Annual SRHS Foundation Golf Tournament Sets Another Record The 17th Annual Foundation tournament was held on September 14, 2012, raising over $20,400 that will go directly to student academic and athletic enhancement programs at SRHS. The Foundation thanks all of the golfers, our tee and cart bag sponsors, and raffle, mulligan and silent and live auction prize contributors. We especially acknowledge our major sponsors: Randy Apel, The Codding Foundation, The Dale Family, Exchange Bank, James Laier, Jr., Doug Pavese, Ann Porrino and Varenna. Recognition also goes to all of our hardworking volunteer committee members for their tireless efforts. Additional gratitude goes to the SRHS Cheerleaders, Pandy, and Women’s and Men’s Golf Team members who welcomed and assisted golfers. Ninety golfers in Open and Coed divisions assembled at the Oakmont West course and a shotgun start for this scramble format tournament. This may have been the most fun and spirited tournament over the years. Following the tournament, golfers and guests attended a fantastic awards dinner at Oakmont’s Quail Inn. At the conclusion of dinner, winning golfers were announced while the silent and live auction bidders competed for attractively priced items and packages. This year’s winners were as follows: Open Division – Oren Smedshammer, Tom Schieberl, Richard Schieberl, Mike Lane; Coed Division – Dominic Porrino, Andre Benson, Christy Rollofson, Don Rollofson; Men’s Long Drive – Jeff Komar; Women’s Long Drive – Mary Beseda; Senior Long Drive – Len Read; Men’s Closest to the Hole #16 – Buck Yaeger; Women’s Closest to the Hole #16 – Darlene Bath; Putting contest – Pat Fahy. NOVEMBER, 2012 Athletics Alan Nea$ey, Assistant Principal, 528-5344, anea$ey@srcs.k12.ca.us November finds Panther Athletics in transition. Our fall sports season is winding down. It has been fun watching the Girls and Boys teams compete this fall. It is easy to pause and reflect on all the things that athletics teaches us about larger life issues, such as character, persistence, balancing expectations with results, etc. I’ve admired all the hard work that all of our athletes have put into their sports, and I know that they’ve created memories that will last throughout the years. Don’t spend too much time in reflection, however, because the winter sports season is kicking off! Girls and Boys Basketball Season is starting soon. If you are still interested, contact the coaches to find out specifics on times for tryouts. I know they will be competitive this year. Wrestling is also just now starting to get rolling. The contact numbers for the winter coaches are listed below. On an administrative note, please note the new policy on Alternative P. E. Credit that is showcased in this issue. The policy is new this year, and like any new policy, there are bound to be some bumps in the implementation. A second point that needs to be clarified, as it comes up multiple times each season; your student needs to be in attendance at school on the day of a contest. If the student is not in attendance, they cannot participate. If they do participate, they are ineligible and we will have to forfeit the contest if we win. This carries over to the weekend as well. If the student is not in school on Friday, they can’t participate in a Saturday contest. For some this seems silly, but if your child is too sick to stay in school, they shouldn’t be playing that evening. Finally, I’d like to restate the communication chain for questions. If you have a question about something that is going on with your child’s team, ask the coach first. If that does not clarify or satisfy your needs, talk to the appropriate Athletic Director. If you still don’t feel satisfied with the answers you are receiving, feel free to contact me and I will be happy to listen to your concerns. NOVEMBER, 2012 Athletics, CONTINUED 2012 Santa Rosa High Cross Country Season Over eighty runners came out for the SRHS Cross Team season this fall. More than seventy have survived and are still running Panthers. The season started off in early September at the Rancho Cotate Invitational. While not a scored meet, if it had been scored the Varsity Panther boys and girls would have placed in the top three. The JV boys would have been clear, easy winners, and the JV girls would have placed second. Many top performances that day for the highest placing Panthers for the boys were seniors Cris Nazarek, Mikey Kennedy, Jon Ahnberg and junior Aden Holmes. Freshman Toby Alongi easily won the JV race followed by sophomores Adan Chavez, Justin Thurman, and Ethan Foster. Those three JVs are now running varsity. In the girls race, freshman Delaney White finished second in her first ever race for SRHS in the varsity girls competition. Following Delaney were juniors Sarah Withers and Trixie Scolari. Senior Luz Huerta was the fourth varsity Panther lady. At the Super Septo on our home Spring Lake 3.05 mile course, Delaney came back with a phenomenal 19:16 putting her 15th on the course for Panther girls. We began using this course in 1988. Cris Nazarek ran 16:01 to put him 19th all time. At the two mile Viking Opener, the Frosh/ Soph boys made up of Toby Alongi, Adan Chavez, Justin Thurman, Ethan Foster and Justin Dante took the first place ribbon. The Senior boys finished a close second to Piner while the open girls took 4th place. Delaney White won the Frosh/Soph girls race, running the fifth fastest time ever for a freshman from any school at this race since it began in 1988. At Stanford our boys finished tenth in the Division 1 race out of forty-three schools. Nearly two hundred fifty schools from all over the country competed at Stanford that day. Delaney finished sixth in the Division 1 girls race with the eighth fastest time of all freshmen girls running at Stanford that day. In our league opener, the Varsity boys and JV boys dominated the competition of Rancho Cotate and Cardinal Newman. The girls finished second to Rancho Cotate on this 101 degree fryer at Spring Lake. In the league, the boys are 2-0, and the girls 1-1. A great opening part of the season for our Panther Harriers, and it is only going to get better.
