The crown jewel of the Southern
Black Hills is the world-famous
playground known as Custer State
Park, one of the nation’s largest
state parks.
Its sprawling beauty and endless
chances for adventure offer opportunities for fun and excitement for
young and old. The park encompasses 71,000 acres of spectacular
terrain and an abundance of
wildlife. Within the park, you’ll discover a world of adventure!
Favorite outdoor activities include hiking 7,242-foot Harney
Peak, mountain biking, horseback
riding, rock climbing, fishing,
chuckwagon suppers and jeep rides
to see the bison.
The park boasts scenic drives
such as Needles Highway (Hwy.
87), which twists and turns its way
past towering rock formations and
through narrow tunnels. At the end
of one tunnel stands the Needles
Eye, a granite spire with a slit only
three to four feet wide but reaching
30 to 40 feet in the air.
History and culture also abound.
Walk the banks of French Creek,
where Custer’s expedition first discovered gold in 1874. Or, visit the
log cabin that was home to Badger
Clark, South Dakota’s first poet laureate.
Custer State Park can serve as
the headquarters for your Black
Hills stay. You’ll find resorts at Sylvan Lake, Legion Lake, Blue Bell
and the State Game Lodge, all located within the park. Each resort
has its own flavor, ranging from the
stately Game Lodge, which is listed
on the National Register of Historic
Places, to the mini dude ranch at
Blue Bell.
Custer State Park campgrounds
offer a variety of scenic sites. Set up
camp along a flowing stream, in the
midst of a pine forest or near a
mountain lake. The choice is yours!
Resort cabins, historic lodge rooms
and motel units are available
through Custer State Park Resorts.
Don’t be surprised if you encounter a roadblock of grazing
bison in Custer State Park. A herd of
1,300 bison roams freely throughout
the park, often stopping traffic along
the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road.
The herd is one of the largest in the
world.
Bison can weigh as much as
2,000 pounds. Historically, the animal played an essential role in the
lives of the Lakota, who relied on
the “tatanka” for food, clothing and
shelter.
A word of caution: Bison can be
unpredictable and dangerous.
Please view them from inside a car.
In September, the herd is
rounded up during the annual Buffalo Roundup. A variety of fun activities also take place in the park
that weekend.
The park is also home to other
wildlife such as pronghorn antelope,
mountain goats, bighorn sheep,
mountain lions, deer, elk, wild
turkeys and a band of friendly burros.
The park offers many educational programs and family activities. For example, park naturalists
lead guided nature walks and goldpanning excursions.
A world of adventure awaits at
Custer State Park—all that is missing is you!

ORGANIZATIONS

Edgemont is a friendly ranching community. Community celebrations and events are held throughout the
year showcasing this heritage.
In May a Bluegrass Festival is held. During Memorial weekend the Trails, Trains and Pioneers Museum
holds a pancake breakfast to begin its season. The Buena
Vista Wagon and Trail Ride begins later the same day and
the Ranch Trail Ride is on Sunday. The Memorial Day
Bridge Celebration at Teddy Roosevelt Memorial Park
Monday concludes the weekend.
Summer kicks off with the WRCA Ranch Rodeo.
July hosts the Redneck Rally in July with parades, mud
drags and lawnmower races. The Fall River County Fair
is held each year on the first weekend in August. Edgemont celebrates fall with a Fall Festival. The celebration
season concludes with Winter Wonderland in December.
Located on the “edge” of the Black Hills, Edgemont
offers spectacular scenery with wide open prairies and the
beauty and ruggedness of the Black Hills. Native elk,
mule deer, white tail deer, pronghorn and the Merriam
turkey are common in the area. Occasional sightings of
big horn sheep, mountain lions, coyotes and bobcats are
also possible.
Archeological sites put man in this area well before
the time of Christ. Native people traveled in and out of
the Black Hills for several hundred years. Jedediah Smith
is believed to have traveled along the Cheyenne River in
1823. Lt. Col. George Custer and five companies of men
visited the area in 1874 and spent the first days of August
coming to the Cheyenne River just east of Edgemont.
The area was crossed by the Cheyenne to Deadwood
Stage, as well as spurs of the Sidney to Deadwood Wagon
Trail. By 1890, the railroad had reached Edgemont, the
same year the town was organized. The railroad’s presence has continued to the present day in Edgemont which
is currently served by the Burlington Northern-Sante Fe
and boasts more than 50 trains a day.
In 1984, the Burlington High Line railway, running
from Edgemont to Deadwood, was abandoned and in
1998 it was converted by a rails-to-trails project to the
George S. Mickelson Trail/Burlington Route. The museum, opened in 2005, was named Trails, Trains & Pioneers.
Edgemont has long been the economic center of
western Fall River County’s ranch country. Our downtown is home to restaurants and taverns, shops, antiques,
the park, a campground and a museum that doubles as a
visitor information center. We boast the only livestock
auction barn in America converted into a dinner theatre.
A group of volunteers coordinated the building of a
covered bridge for Edgemont's park in 2010-11. The inside displays historic and current ranchers’ livestock
brands. An annual Bridge Celebration is held on Memorial Day.
Enjoy your visit to Edgemont: Where the Black Hills
meets the Wild American West!

Hot Springs, known for its “warm water, warm people,” was born as a place of healing, relaxation and recuperation because of the warm mineral spring waters.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C., named Hot Springs as one of America’s
“Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2009.” This identifies Hot Springs as a community that offers a unique visitor experience by combining a dynamic downtown with
cultural diversity and attractive architecture.
In 1890, Fred T. Evans built the 200x70-foot Plunge
Bath over a giant thermal spout of warm mineral water
and a group of small springs, which bubble up from its
pebble bottom. Our sparkling, naturally warm mineral
water created the Evans Plunge, the world’s largest natural warm-water indoor swimming pool. The 87 degree
mineral water flows from a thermal spring at 5,000 gallons a minute. The therapeutic “healing” water has
soothed visitors for over 100 years. Today, Evans Plunge
entertains the whole family with water slides, fun tubes,
kids’ pools, jungle rings and lap swimming pool. A fullservice health club is also available.
There are many adventures to be had in Hot Springs!
A one-of-a-kind paleontological find — The Mammoth
Site — showcases the in-situ remains of 60 mammoths
as well as many other creatures and Ice-Age exhibits.
The site is housed in an educational center and research
facility where you can see history being uncovered right
before your eyes.
After checking into your choice of over 400 rooms
of lodging, stroll along the Freedom Trail that winds its
way along the banks of Fall River. Walk under a water-
fall and experience the unique shops, galleries, coffee
houses, book stores, restaurants and lounges in centuryold sandstone buildings along Chicago, Jennings and
North River streets.
Take a trip to Wind Cave National Park to view the
wildlife, hike on the many hiking trails and tour Wind
Cave.
The beauty surrounding Hot Springs forms the backdrop for Southern Hills Golf Course, named 2000-12 by
Golf Week. Then head to Putt 4 Fun miniature golf next
to Budget Host Hills Inn.
South of town on Hwy. 71, see the wild mustangs in
the beautiful natural setting, view wildlife, Native American cultural sites or see movie sets and more at the
Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary—11,000 acres where
more than 500 wild horses roam.
The 21,560-square-foot Pioneer Museum is a great
place to learn about early pioneer history. The beautiful
sandstone buildings in Hot Springs, including the museum, are on the National Historic Register and the Department of Veterans Affairs Hot Springs Medical Center
has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
Hot Springs is surrounded by lakes —Cold Brook
Dam, Cottonwood Dam and Angostura State Recreation
Area. Spend a day at the beach, fishing, boating or hiking! This charming community is ideally situated and
equipped by nature as a Mecca for health, adventure and
recreation seekers. Bathe, play and convalesce in the
Southern Black Hills.
Experience all this and more in Hot Springs.

Named for Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer —
the man who led the famed 7th Cavalry on a government expedition into the last unexplored region in the
United States — Custer is surrounded by cliffs adorned
with dense outcroppings of Ponderosa Pine, clear-running streams and birch groves, all teeming with wildlife.
A desirable location in the Black Hills makes
Custer an ideal vacation headquarters. Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Crazy Horse Memorial, Wind
Cave National Park, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave National Monument and several other public recreation
areas are just a few minutes away by car.
Custer has more than 50 hotels, motels, campgrounds, horse camps, bed and breakfasts and resorts. A
variety of restaurants provide a culinary experience.
Custer’s streets also have more than 30 museums, galleries, gift shops, grocery and retail stores, including the
Custer County 1881 Courthouse Museum. Housed in
Custer’s frontier courthouse building and open Memorial Day to Labor Day, this museum interprets Black
Hills history spanning from the 1874 Custer Expedition
to modern day ranching and mining operations.
Surrounded by the 1.2 million-acre Black Hills National Forest, residents and visitors experience a variety of recreational activities. Custer is home to three
city parks, ball fields, horseshoe and tennis courts, a
community swimming pool and a nine-hole public golf
course.
The former Burlington & Missouri railroad bed has
been converted into the 114-mile-long Mickelson Trail
that provides biking, hiking and horseback riding
through some of the most scenic areas in the Black
Hills.
Custer observes the discovery of gold every July
with a parade, a hot air balloon rally, quilt show and
flower shows, kids activities and street dance.
Just a short drive outside town is Wind Cave National Park, famous for wild-roaming bison herds, nature trails and the fourth-longest cave in the world.
Neighboring Wind Cave is Jewel Cave National
Monument, the second-longest cave in the world. Visitors often opt for the four-hour wild caving tours and
candlelight walks available at both caves, but easy halfhour trips are available for more timid underground explorers.
Every year thousands of visitors flock to see the
annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. The ground
rumbles as 1,500 head of buffalo are herded by park
personnel, cowboys and cowgirls into the buffalo corrals, passing two designated viewing areas along the
way. Visitors watch the park staff sort, brand, test and
select animals for sale.
The Buffalo Roundup is complemented by the Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival and the Chili Cookoff. The
three-day event includes entertainment and arts and
crafts booths. Chefs from across the region compete in
the chili cookoff sponsored by the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce.
