Flu Season

Diabetes Awareness Month:
Tools to Prevent the Disease
with Rebecca Harris, FNP-C
The timing of the start of flu season can be very
unpredictable and can differ from year to year. While most
cases start in October, peak flu season is usually between
December and February.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PROTECT MYSELF FROM FLU THIS SEASON?
Becky Harris, SCH Nurse Practitioner, recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months
of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease.
People should begin getting vaccinated soon after the flu vaccine becomes available. However,
as long as flu viruses are circulating in your community, it’s not too late to get vaccinated.
In addition to getting a seasonal flu vaccine, you can take everyday preventive actions like
staying away from those who are sick, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and
washing your hands regularly to reduce the spread of germs.

You should see your doctor or nurse practitioner as soon as symptoms begin. Studies show that
prompt treatment with antiviral drugs can prevent serious flu complications. Prompt treatment
can mean the difference between having a mild illness versus a very serious illness that could
result in a hospital stay. Treatment with antivirals works best when begun within 48 hours of
getting sick, but it can still be beneficial when given later in the course of the illness.
This is extremely important to people in high-risk categories of serious flu complications such
as children younger than 2 years old, adults 65 and older, pregnant women, and people with
certain medical conditions and limited immune systems.
GET YOUR FLU SHOT TODAY!
Not sure if you just have a cold or full-blown flu? Our clinics can see walk-ins and have same
day appointments that can get you on the road to a cold and flu free winter. Lunchtime
appointments are also available at our Wiggins Clinic. Call 601.928.6700.
NEW! SPECIAL FLUMIST TREATMENTS AT SCH
In addition to offering flu shots,
SCH Clinics now offer a new
treatment to fight the flu. FluMist is
a live, attenuated influenza vaccine,
also known as LAIV. It can be given
to children two years and older. It
is sprayed into the nose, is made
from weakened flu virus and does
not cause the flu. Each year, LAIV is
made to protect against four viruses
that are likely to cause disease in
the upcoming flu season. It takes
about two weeks for protection
to develop after vaccination, and
protections lasts through the flu
season. Children under nine years
of age may need two doses during
the same flu season. Those older
than nine should only need one
dose per flu season.

IT’S YOUR TIME TO QUIT:
his month, get ready to lose the smoking habit and become victorious
over tobacco. The American Cancer Society’s Great American SmokeOut on November 19 is your chance to triumph over addiction.
T
Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and
premature death in the United States. Quitting, even for one day, puts you on
an important track to a healthier life and reduces your risk of cancer.
Join the movement to stop smoking by setting November 19th as your
quit date. Visit with one of our physicians to get the tools and tips, including
medications, to help you succeed by calling 601.928.6700 or 601.795.9320.

xperts predict that if current trends continue,
over five million people will have diabetes in
the next ten years. Diabetes can be a killer and is a
major cause of significant heath problems such as
kidney failure, stroke, heart attack, blindness, hard
to heal wounds and amputations. The sad fact is
that it is a preventable disease. The single biggest
preventative factor is maintaining a healthy weight.
E
There is growing awareness of the need to identify
and intervene early when a person’s weight begins
to rise. Regular visits to one of SCH’s Family Medical
Clinics can provide you with your current body
weight mass index (BMI), monitor your blood sugar,
and provide you with nutritional and exercise tips
Schedule an appointment at one of our family medical clinics and let one of our friendly providers give you
the power to take control of this highly preventable disease. Call 601.928.6700 or 601.795.9320.

is especially important for school-aged children.
Teaching them better eating habits early on will
help combat the risk of Type 2 diabetes, one of the
most common forms of the disease. Instead of
mindlessly eating or drinking sugary drinks and
snacks throughout the day, experts encourage people
to learn what 2,000 calories a day of healthy eating
looks like. It means a breakfast of toast or non-sugary
cereal; a sandwich and zero calorie drink like water
at lunch; and a supper of a lean protein, vegetables
and a small side of carbohydrates. Add in two snacks
of fruit or yogurt a day, and you are on the way to
reducing your risk of diabetes.

RENITA PARKER, DPM
PODIATRY
r. Renita Parker, a native of Clarksdale,
MS, diagnoses and treats patients who
suffer from foot and ankle-related conditions
at Stone County Hospital’s Wiggins and
Poplarville medical clinics.
While completing her surgical training and
residency, she became very passionate about
podiatry and salvaging diabetic limbs. She
chose to come back home to Mississippi to
practice due to the need for her specialty.
“Mississippi has one of the highest rates
of diabetes in the country,” explains Dr.
Parker, “and without proper treatment and
preventative education, the risk for diabetic
amputations will continue to grow in
our state.”
Dr. Parker regularly advises patients on how
to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to avoid
the foot and ankle side effects that often come
with a diabetes or pre-diabetic diagnosis.
D
In addition to conducting surgeries, she
treats hard-to-heal wounds, prescribes insoles/
custom-made orthopedic shoes, gives referrals
for physical therapy services, and helps
patients manage their medications.
After looking at the opportunities that Stone
County Hospital and clinics had to offer and
learning about the relaxed and hospitable
environment on the Mississippi Gulf Coast,
Dr. Parker was very excited to make the region
her home. For the last three years, she has
been working daily to provide the people of
Stone County and South Mississippi with
the best health care possible. She currently
serves as secretary of the Mississippi
Podiatry Association.
To schedule an appointment with Dr. Parker
at our Wiggins clinic, please call 601.928.6700.
