Comprising the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are the largest public arts institutions in the City of San Francisco and are among the largest art museums in the United States. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco have rendered over a century of public service in the arts, and it is its mission to extend and enhance that service well into the 21st century. The Fine Arts Museums continue to serve as one of the premier public institutions in the western United States, existing to provide its community and region with high quality exhibitions, programs, education and outreach, and to care for San Francisco's esteemed art collection. Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Constituency by Median Household Income In 2011-2012, twenty-seven (27%) of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco community and education partners were located in census tracts with median household incomes under $ 50,000.* *This information is based on 2000 U.S. Census Data. Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco: Educational Programs & Community Outreach Families with Children Families with children can choose from a wide variety of programs specifically designed for them including summer camps, free Saturday art classes or hands-on art making activities designed by the Museums' artist-in-residence. Programs include Art After School and Artist Studio for Families and Children. Resources for Educators The Education Department at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco provide a wide variety of resources, events and written materials for educators planning visits to the Museums with their students. Below you will find rich source material with which to prepare yourself and your students to visit the Museums, including teacher workshops, special events, and temporary exhibition resources. K–12 Students The Fine Arts Museums' School Programs enable students to make connections and develop an understanding of art in both creative and historical contexts. The programs offer a vast array of experiences ranging from independent viewing to facilitated visits with docents, museum artists, poets and the Museum Ambassadors. Programs include class visits, curriculum-supported visits, Museum Ambassadors, Poets in the Galleries, and Children’s Theater. College Programs College programs at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco focus on artistic enrichment, art history perspectives, studio art, and performing arts that highlight a specific time period. Current programs include Collections Research, Docent Tours for College Groups, Sketching in the Galleries, Art History, and New Generations Student Showcase Evening. Docents Docents at the museum facilitate learning by helping audiences of all ages understand and enjoy the permanent collections and special exhibitions, and by engaging visitors in interactive experiences that give them a new appreciation of the visual arts. Organ Concerts The Legion of Honor’s Skinner organ is the world’s only indoor/outdoor organ. View extraordinary art as you listen to a free concert every Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m., except when the museum is closed. FRAME The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is a member of the French Regional and American Museum Exchange (FRAME). Founded in 1999, FRAME is a formal collaboration of museums in twelve cities in France, twelve museums in the United States and one associate member in Canada. FRAME serves as a catalyst for cultural exchange between France and the United States. Thanks to this unique consortium, extraordinary collections are placed at the service of an ever-wider public on both sides of the Atlantic. In these ways, FRAME serves the cultural needs of each country and educates a constituency of great size, breadth and distribution.
