The word of Peranakan is also used commonly to describe the Indonesian Chinese. In both Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia, Peranakan means descendant. Baba refers to the male descendant and Nyonya, the female. Most Peranakans are of Hokkein ancestry, although a fair denomination of them is of the Teochew or Cantonese descent. The language of the Peranakan, Baba Malay (Bahasa Melayu Baba), is a dialect of the Malay Language which contains many Hokkein words. The Baba Nyonya was partially assimilated into the Malay culture, especially in food, dress and language used, while retaining some of the Chinese traditions and culture, like religion, name, folk medicine and festival celebrations. Thus, creating a new kind of mixed culture from their country of origin with the local. From the Malay influence a unique "Nyonya" cuisine has developed using typical Malay spices. Examples are Chicken Kapitan, a dry chicken curry, and Inchi Kabin, a Nyonya version of fried chicken. Pindang bandeng is a common fish soup served in Indonesia during the Chinese New Year and so is a white round mooncake from Tangerang which is normally used during the Autumn Festival. Swikee Purwodadi is a peranakan dish from Purwodadi, it is a frog soup dish. Nyonya Laksa is a very popular dish in Singapore and Malaysia, as is Kueh Lapis, a type of multi layered cake, most often eaten at Chinese New Year to symbolize a ladder of prosperity. 03 2nd Quarter 2012 TOUCHÉ Magazine FORUM Baba Nyonya (Peranakan) CONTINUE THE PERANAKAN retained most of their ethnic and religious origins (such as ancestor worship), but assimilated the language and culture of the Malays. The Nyonya's clothing, Baju Panjang (Long Dress) was adapted from the native Malay's Baju Kurung. It is worn with a batik sarong (batik wrap-around skirt) and 3 kerosang (brooches). Beaded slippers called Kasot Manek were a hand-made made with much skill and patience: strung, beaded and sewn onto canvas with tiny faceted glass beads from Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic). In modern times, glass beads from Japan are preferred. Traditional kasot manek design often has European floral subjects, with colors influenced by Peranakan porcelain and batik sarongs. Historical and cultural items from the Baba culture are displayed in cultural establishments on Heeren Street, Jonker Street and other streets in the same neighborhood in Malacca; the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in Penang, Malaysia; and at the Peranakan Museum in Singapore. Furniture, food, and even traditional clothes of the Baba and Nyonya are exhibited. Free weekly street shows featuring Baba performances, and traditional and pop Chinese cultural performances are found in Jonker Street in Malacca (Melaka). The shows are part of the night market (pasar malam) scene, and are usually crowded with shoppers, both local and foreign. 04 TOUCHÉ Magazine 2nd Quarter 2012 FORUM COVER STORY The Baba House (Source: http:/ www.thebabahouse.com.my) THE BABA HOUSE is housed in a historic building showcasing traditional Peranakan culture. It is also a highly recommended place for those who would like to discover Melaka in an interesting and interactive way. If you are planning to spend an hour there before hopping to another major attraction, think twice as it is not an ordinary “street” – one can spend a whole day there just to check out the attractive shops along the street. Located at Jalan Hang Jebat, this street is also known as Jonker Walk. At an easily accessible location, some people might perceive it as nothing more than a straight and narrow street. However, once you stepped into the entrance of the street, you will be amazed by what you see in each and every distinct shop. Along the street, you can find shops selling unique antique, wood-craved statues, interior and household products, fashionable clothes, colourful accessories and various souvenirs. The main souvenir that you will be easily attracted to is probably the colourful clogs. Made by wood and painted with striking flowery pattern, the clogs are available in various colours such as red, yellow, purple and blue. You can even find those clogs in different sizes for both adult and children! These modern type of clogs are “invented” from clogs that old nanny wore in the olden days, which was just a simple one with red rubber strip and no colourful painting. Today, these clogs are just another hit item here! Promised to get some nice souvenirs of Melaka for friends? Here is the best place to source some unique souvenirs without having to burn a hole in your pocket. Different shops along the street sell souvenirs like key chain, beautiful wind chimes made by sea shell and photo frame. If you are looking for something even more extraordinary, wood craving will be a good choice. Wood-craved statues of different type of animals are also available in Jonker Street. 08 TOUCHÉ Magazine 2nd Quarter 2012 TRAVEL SHOWCASE Jonker Street, Malacca - A Truly Fascinating Street - Source: http://www.semarang.world-guides.com CONTINUE (source: http://www.malaysiavacationguide.com) For those who are looking for “personalized” souvenirs, go for seal engraving. It is where you can engrave names or initials of Chinese character on a small stones and use it as a personal stamp. Apart from the ordinary stone, you can also opt for something fancier – stones with motives like tiger, dragon or others. This service is available in front of a souvenir shop named Banyan Garden Café . Prices for seal engraving are varied depending on characters you would like to engrave and stones you prefer. Besides selling souvenirs, shops in Jonker Street also sell pretty apparels. Most of the boutiques are renovated in an amazing way, featuring natural theme by utilizing earth tone colour for wall, table and even hanger. Even though most of the boutiques are in a relatively small size if compared to retail outlet in cities, they provide comprehensive apparel ranging from blouse, dress, T-shirt, pants to matching bags, accessories and hat! Tired of walking along the street and checking every attractive shop? At Jonker Street, there are numerous café and restaurant that sell local delicacies. The most renowned among tourist will be Geographer Café located at the middle of the street. Painted in yellow with striking green window pane, the café is another landmark in the street. During these 3 days, there will be a night market starting from 6.00 pm to 12.00 am where there will be additional stalls along the pedestrian street. No matter day or night, Jonker Street is not merely a narrow street with shops. It is a discovery into the cultures of Melaka. 09 2nd Quarter 2012 TOUCHÉ Magazine TRAVEL SHOWCASE Jonker Street, Malacca CONTINUE (source: http://www.malaysiavacationguide.com) - A Truly Fascinating Street - TOURIST ATTRACTION AND SIGHTSEEING RETAIL,MECHANDISE AND MONUMENT Jonker Gallery This boutique has pretty clothes in flowing prints as well as bags, footwear and home décor in every colour under the sun that are sure to catch your eye. Also boasting a range of cutesy charms and fashion trinkets, San Shu Gong Food Industries Sdn. Bhd. This little store – located opposite the Geographer café – is the perfect place to get some delicious Nyonya pastries. Try the kuih bangkit and the absolutely sumptuous double-buttered Nyonya pineapple tarts, as they’re simply out of this world. LW Nyonya Pineapple Tarts House This store is owned by the husband and wife team – Teng and Lucy – has been listed in the 2004 Malaysian Guinness Record Book for baking the largest pineapple tart in Malaysia. In the ensuing years LW has grown by leaps and bounds and they now have four outlets across Malacca. Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum At the beginning of the 16th century, merchants and entrepreneurs were lured to Malacca’s shores due to stories of the city’s burgeoning success and wealth. In particular the city saw an influx of Chinese traders who arrived in droves in an effort to escape Manchu rule. These entrepreneurs went on to marry local Malay women – descendents of these marriages were known as Peranakan or ‘Straits-born Chinese’. Their relative success resulted in these expatriate merchants becoming the principal wealth catalysts of the thriving city. The ‘Babas’ (male Sino-Malays) flaunted their affluence by purchasing Dutch townhouses and transforming them into out-and-out palaces. The interiors of these homes were opulent and stuffed to the tee with Dutch-influenced fixtures including hand-painted tiles and Victorian lamps. NIGHT LIFE Far East Café This little café – situated off Jonker Street – is the perfect place to enjoy a quiet drink. With soft jazz playing in the background, it is decidedly unpretentious and has a good selection of drinks. Libar Cocktail House Said to have the most extensive array of – you guessed it – cocktails in Malaysia, Libar is a chic and stylish bar along Jonker Street that caters to a sophisticated crowd. One of the most crowded pubs along this avenue; it has good music and a stellar selection of drinks. Ringo’s Classic Café Malacca Boasting an adequate selection of drinks, Ringo’s is a dusty yet densely packed pub along Jonker Street. Although it might not look like much, it has a steady clientele and is busy on the weekends. Good music and friendly service feature throughout this joint and it’s a good place to enjoy the sights of the market. Healthty and Relaxing Activities Pusat Rawatan "PUTUO"/RC Reflexology Offering massage, foot reflexology, fire cupping, scraping and ear candling treatments, this little nook located along Jalan Hang Jebat is a good stopover on your jaunt through the Jonker Walk bazaar and also a good way to escape the hot and humid air. Puri Spa Situated within the grounds of Hotel Puri Malacca, this Peranakan-inspired spa offers some truly pampering treatments. Guests can indulge in a single therapy or Puri’s spa packages which includes the relaxing Floral Milk Bath. Featuring perfectly parcelled recipes for relaxation, this spa is the ideal way to indulge your body, mind and soul the Puri way. CULINARY ART & FOOD AND BEVERAGE Calanthe Art Café Forget Starbucks and Coffee Bean. While you are in Malacca a visit to Calanthe Art Café is a necessity. Featuring more than 13 different smooth coffee flavours and a menu that includes local favourites and Western snacks, this artsy café – located along Jalan Hang Kasturi – is also home to a delicious house specialty laksa. (Open Daily) Café 1511 Situated within the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum, this high-ceilinged Peranakan café features a Nyonya menu. Specialties include Nyonya laksa, otak-otak and pai tee. Part of the Mabul Island is also home to groups of Bajau fishermen who have built their traditional palm thatched houses. The Bajau Laut, the world's only tribe of nomadic sea gypsies spends their lives on the water. Over the years, some have entered a transition from sea nomadic to sedentary village life at a former major anchorage site such as Mabul. The entire resort is built over water on stilts made of Belian Wood commonly called ironwood, laid in certain points so as to minimise damage to the existing reef. In its design, Sipadan Water Village has achieved near utopia in its over-the-water layout, splendid water cottage accommodations with flowered sidewalks, wonderfully prepared Asian and Continental cuisine, and impeccable and personable.
