The Seasons
Andover Choral Society joins forces with professional soloists Beatrice Acland, James SavageHanford, and Matthew Palmer in a performance of Haydn’s final oratorio, The Seasons.
Full of energy and vitality, Haydn’s music presents scenes from each of the four seasons of the
year, incorporating on its way images of gentle pastoral beauty, the turbulent thunderstorm,
and even a boistrous chorus in praise of wine!
Beatrice Acland is a lyric soprano on the Masters in Opera
Performance course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama,
where she studies with Lorna Anderson and Ingrid Surgenor.
She has performed operatic roles including Alice Ford (Falstaff)
with The Black Cat Opera Company, and Lucy Locket (The Beggar’s
Opera) and Sandman and Mother (cover) (Hansel and Gretel) with
Opera’r Ddraig. She is the recipient of the EA Redman Prize and is
supported by the Split Infinitive Trust, Women’s Careers Foundation,
The Winship Foundation and The Leverhulme Scholarship.
James Savage-Hanford is a British-Polish tenor and recent graduate
of the RWCMD’s PGDip Music Performance course. Previously he read
Music at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and completed a Masters in
Historical Musicology at Royal Holloway, University of London, where
he is currently studying for a PhD.
Operatic roles include Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Don Ottavio (Don
Giovanni), Bardolfo (Falstaff) with Black Cat Opera, The Teapot and
The Little Old Man (L’Enfant et les Sortilèges) with Bute Park Opera,
and Remendado (Carmen) for Opera Up Close.
Matthew studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under
Robert Dean.
On the opera stage Matthew has performed roles including Demetrius,
Schaunard, Guglielmo, Belcore, Papageno, Masetto and Marullo and
in concert has sung baritone solos in St. Matthew Passion; Messiah;
Fauré, Mozart and Brahms Requiems; Five Mystical Songs and many
others in the standard repertory and beyond. In 2015 Matthew
made his Grange Park Opera debut, and toured the UK with the
National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company.
