Questions Please contact Beverly Houwing at: beverly@squidgallery.com 310-488-8848 3 Detailed Daily Itinerary Getting There: Traveling (Thu, 18 Aug to Sun, 21 Aug) Travel from home to Johannesburg, South Africa (JNB) and overnight at a hotel near OR Tambo International Airport or in town at Claire’s Bed & breakfast. It is advisable to arrive a day or so earlier to visit Johannesburg and acclimate to the time difference. Make sure you plan your flights to arrive in Johannesburg no later than Saturday, August 20, 2015 and have an extra day just in case of any delays on the international flights. Day 1-3:Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge, Savuti (Mon, 22 Aug to Wed, 24 Aug) On arrival at OR Tambo International Airport, you will be met by a company representative who will hand over your travel documents and assist you with the check in for your flight to Maun. On arrival at Maun Airport, you will be met by a company representative and escorted onto your scheduled charter flight to Ghoha Hills. This is a flight of approximately one hour. Savuti In the heart of Botswana’s Chobe National Park lies a dynamic wilderness, a sweeping expanse of savanna brooded over by several rocky outcrops which guard a relic marsh and the dry channel that was once its lifeline. This is Savuti, where mysterious wet and dry cycles mold the landscape and dictate the nature of its wild inhabitants. Currently it is dry, and wild dogs hunt in the channel where crocodiles swam only twenty years ago. One can see rock paintings of early man’s wildlife sightings in the Gubatsa Hills. During the arid winter months game viewing concentrates on Savuti’s resident bull elephants, antelope and lion prides, and black-backed jackal, bat-eared foxes, tsessebe, and kudu, abound. The summer rains bring a feast for lion, hyena and cheetah as thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest assemble in a chaotic pattern on the marsh. Cape buffalo herds arrive and migrant birds swell Savuti’s 300 resident species, thrilling bird-watchers with their spectacular antics. Discerning travelers to Botswana will enjoy this unique, world-class experience offered at Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge. Luxury tents are situated along the hillside with views of the bush and the waterhole. The lodge is independently owned and each of the luxury tents sleeps two people and has breathtaking views of the plains. There are individual viewing decks and reclining beds which can be used to enjoy the untouched African plains. There is also a large viewing deck and sophisticated furnishings and fittings complete the luxury feel of this lodge. 4 Planned Activities: AM/PM Game drives Day trip to the Savuti dry marsh Sundowners and sunset photos at the baobab trees near camp Day 4-6:Pom Pom Camp, Okavango Delta Okavango Delta (Thu, 25 Aug to Sat, 27 Aug) After breakfast, you will be flown by scheduled charter to Pom Pom Camp. This is a flight of approximately 45 minute flight. Lying in the middle of the largest expanse of sand on earth the Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most amazing, sensitive and complex environments supporting a spectacle of wilderness and wildlife. Unique as one of the world’s few inland deltas, the placid waters and lush indigenous forests offer a safe haven for innumerable bird and wildlife species. Highlights include the elusive Sitatunga antelope which has found refuge in this pristine wetland ecosystem, while birds such as the African fish eagle, Pel’s fishing owl and many others provide a spectacular display. The Camp is located on Pom Pom Island in a private concession situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta and on the head waters of the Xudum river system. The area lies on the western boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve and offers superb scenery and a true Okavango wilderness experience. Planned Activities: * Two per day: Game viewing & cruising the channels by mokoro Game drives on land Cruising the channels on a powerboat Plus daily sundowners overlooking the floodplain or landscape 5 Day 7-11: Camp Kalahari, Makgadikgadi Pan (Sun, 28 Aug to Thu, 01 Sep) Makgadikgadi Pan (Kalahari Desert) After breakfast, you will be flown by scheduled charter flight to Maun Airport. This is a flight of approximately twenty five minutes. On arrival at Maun Airport, you will be met by a company representative and escorted onto your onward scheduled charter flight to Camp Kalahari. This is a flight of approximately an hour. The Makgadikgadi Pan is the world’s largest salt pan, formed on the bed of an ancient lake that began evaporating eons ago. Visiting Makgadikgadi is a unique desert experience: in the dry season, this vast expanse of sun-baked salt glistens in the light. This is a destination of incredible landscapes You’ll find Camp Kalahari nestled amongst the acacias and Mokolwane palms of Brown Hyena Island, on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Botswana. A relaxed, family-friendly traditional safari camp, ideal for those seeking fun and adventure, without sacrificing comfort or style. The camp is an eclectic mix of original African furniture and textiles paired with traditional campaign style furniture and colonial antiques. Guests can relax in a traditionally built thatch library, living and dining area, and when it heats up, cool off in the plunge pool. Camp Kalahari has 10 spacious Meru tents accommodating 2 guests in each with an inter-leading bathroom. All ten traditional safari tents are outfitted with rich textiles, Moroccan kilims, and four poster beds. Your itinerary during your stay at Camp Kalahari includes two nights at Camp Kalahari, two nights at the Lost Island of Baobabs, sleeping under the stars among these ancient trees on bedrolls and one night back at Camp Kalahari. Planned Activities: Get unbelievably up close and personal with a family of incredibly friendly habituated meerkats. Visit to iconic tree, Chapman’s Baobab, a campsite of Livingstone & Selous and one of the three largest and oldest trees in Africa. Game drives to experience unique desert wildlife. 6 Quad biking across the lunar expanse of the pans and visit to Khubu Island, a ghostly, baobab-laden rock, which is entirely surrounded by a sea of salt. This includes a two-night stay at the Island of Lost Boababs, which Camp Kalahari has exclusive use of. Walking with a group of Zu/’hoasi Bushmen for a glimpse into their ancient culture and experience how they survive in the harsh environment of the Kalahari desert. Enjoy “sundowners” each night — a cocktail, refreshing glass of wine, a beer or soft drink, out on the salt pans as the sun sets or at the burrow of the rare brown hyena. Star trail & milky way photography opportunities or just enjoy the view of the horizon-to-horizon expanse of the stars during new moon and incredibly dark skies. Day 11: Departure (Fri, 02 September) After breakfast, you will be flown by scheduled charter flight to Maun Airport in time to check in for your flight to Johannesburg. This is a flight of approximately 50 minutes. On arrival at OR Tambo International Airport, check in for your flight home or stay overnight in Johannesburg to continue to home destination afterwards. 7 Charter Flight Regulations Please note that all scheduled and private charter transfers are in small, light aircraft that seat as few as four passengers. If this is of concern to you, please let us know as we will need to make some changes to your itinerary. In addition, please let us know if you are over 1.82 meters (6’2”) tall or weigh over 100kg (220lbs). Tickets are generally not issued for private or scheduled charter flights; you will however, receive a voucher. Timings of all charters, scheduled or private, can vary slightly from that shown in the itinerary. Departure times from your lodge/camp will be confirmed to you the night before by the lodge. Please take note of this important information pertaining to the luggage limits and restrictions for all travellers flying on light aircraft in Botswana. CAAB (Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana) regulations are very strict with regards to flight plans, departure timing and aircraft load sheets which have to be logged according to a prescribed timeline for each and every scheduled departure. In addition, for safe weight distribution and balance during flight, all luggage has to be packed into the pod of the aircraft. Suitcases and luggage with rigid wheel frames do not fit and as a result cause delays and inconvenience for other travellers. Guest safety will never be compromised due to these luggage restrictions not being adhered to. If luggage is excessive or packed into bags that do not easily fit into the pods, the pilots may be obliged to insist that you re-pack luggage into smaller bags or soft bags and you may have to leave excess luggage behind. Any left luggage can be forwarded to you at an additional cost. The luggage limit is 20kg per person in total (i.e. combining both luggage and hand luggage/camera equipment). Please remember when packing that complimentary laundry services are offered in all camps and lodges so you need not pack excess clothing for your visit. The bags which guests can bring should be small, flexible and soft sided. Luggage with "pull along" handle frames and wheels do not classify as flexible, soft-sided and may not fit into the aircraft. This includes bags which might have soft sides, however have a solid or rigid "wheelie" frame within the base of the bag. Luggage size: 23cm x 30cm x 65 cm (or 10” x 12” x 25”) which is roughly the size of a large sportsbag. Additional luggage can be stored for you at no additional cost, or transported to your point of departure from the destination (a service offered at cost). Ideally we need to know your requirements for these services at the time of confirmation. Guests arriving in Botswana, who have not adhered to the luggage guidelines as per above, will NOT be able to depart on a scheduled charter. If you are travelling by privately chartered aircraft, we will advise you if the restrictions differ as this depends on a number of factors. Please do adhere to the above specifications. Should you not, you may will be asked to repack your luggage into soft bags which will delay your own departure as well as inconvenience other travellers. Or you will incur substantial additional expense before being able to proceed with your holiday. We cannot accept any liability for any cost, delays or inconvenience incurred as a result of clients not heeding the above requests. 8 8
