We like to think that many of these unmet needs aren’t even expressed to us by our customers because we anticipate them in advance. Our products are innovative solutions to problems that have not yet had a chance to blossom; we nip them in the bud before they can get in a hunter’s way. Our team’s input from the field is constant, and directly linked to all we create. Overwhelming inspiration, however, comes from customer feedback, our team of athletes, and our pro staff. Collectively, they spend thousands of hours in the field, adventuring across a global landscape and reporting back to us. This fills — and Jeff Sposito washing off the sweat after a long afternoon looking for black bears in central British Columbia. Photo: Ryan Heffron / Arctos Collective often overflows — our resevoir of product ideas. Even so, some of the best concepts never come to fruition. Our commitment to delivering focused solutions that do precisely what we say they’ll do requires real focus and is not immune to failure. Manufacturing and improving our own textile technology is no small task, but doing things this way means we have control of every SYSTEMS piece of gear we offer, down to the threads that comprise it. We take pride in testing our products thoroughly, both in the lab and field, so you don’t have to. All of this takes longer and makes for a lot of more work, but we stand behind our methods and the superior solutions they deliver to you. THE IMPORTANCE OF LAYERS Why layer? It’s simple: so you can add and subtract garments to complement the conditions you experience while hunting. By using a base layer that pulls moisture away from your skin to keep you dry, an insulation layer to regulate your core temperature, and an outer layer to provide breathable protection against the elements, you have the freedom to combine and create customized systems that keep you outside longer and optimally comfortable during any weather conditions you might face. The SITKA Gear Darkroom Learn more about the SITKA Gear culture at: SITKAgear.com/insight/darkroom Since no two hunts are alike, every component of a SITKA Gear system has a unique function to accommodate a different approach to a singular end purpose. Hunting is a chess match where every move counts. If you’re distracted by discomfort, you make bad decisions. Bad decisions lead to bad results. It’s really as simple as that. Our line hasn’t grown to its current breadth and depth for no reason. Every piece is the direct result of a need we’ve either experienced personally in the field or heard about from trusted users. In the mountains, pursuits run the gamut from moderate to high activity, peppered with periods of pure motionlessness in weather conditions that are almost constantly changing. Our Big Game line responds brilliantly to varying activity levels and the unpredictable conditions that come with glassing open bowls, tiptoeing through aspen groves, battling scree fields, and covering miles at a time. Whether you’re backpack hunting Dall sheep in the highest peaks of the Mackenzie Mountains, enduring sideways sleet on the most remote bay of Kodiak Island for Brown bears, or chasing mulies in the heat-parched Sonoran Desert, we have a system for you. 4 Systems Founder Jonathan Hart pauses during his Nevada mule deer hunt to take in the light show. Traditional camouflage relies upon mimicking hunters’ surroundings. GORE™ OPTIFADE™ Concealment breaks the mold by tricking the animal’s eyes into not recognizing the hunter as a predator. Designed for engagement ranges of 35 meters and beyond at ground level, GORE™ OPTIFADE™ Concealment Open Country pattern is optimized for spot and stalk hunting in a mountain environment. The Open Country pattern delivers concealment with a scientifically calibrated balance that, in the eyes of an animal, both breaks up your body outline and makes you fade into the background. We know the definition of “light and fast” can differ from hunter to hunter. For some, it’s cutting off the handle of the toothbrush or leaving the tent behind to save weight and space. For others, it’s hitting the trail after work and hurrying to get position on that herd bull who’s been frequenting the same remote mountain bowl. That’s why we designed our Light & Fast gear to have extreme flexibility and accommodate every situation and hunting style. First, we made it more wind resistant, choking down the fabric to let in just a third of the wind-driven air that flowed through the previous iteration. We wanted NEW! 90% Jacket $289 Style #50072 Durable and breathable, wind and weather resistant, this is ideal for the active backcountry hunter. Lightly insulated for cooler mornings with twoway stretch for unrestricted movement, the 90% Jacket has always been one of our most versatile go-to pieces. TECHNOLOGY Durable Water Repellent Finish FABRIC Soft-Shell, Polyester Face FEATURES • Body-Mapped Checkered Fleece Backer • Interior Seam Taping • 2 Chest, 2 Hand, 1 Sleeve Pocket • 2-Way Stretch SPECS Sizes: S-3XL Weight: 16.38 oz warmth for chilly mornings and cool fall days, but with improved wind resistance. We found that insulating the entire jacket caused overheating, especially during periods of high exertion. The solution? A body-mapped, checkered fleece backer that puts insulation only where you need it, allowing convective cooling to dump excess COLORS Open Country heat where you don’t. Since it’s designed to be worn with minimal underlayers, we applied thermal tape to the seams, making them smoother and more comfortable. We improved fabric stretch, allowing the 90% to be cut more athletically without restricting movement, which keeps excess material from getting in your way. The result is a more pliable, durable, and quiet jacket — a precisely engineered tool for the mid-season that belongs in every big game hunter’s arsenal. NEW! 90% Pant $269 Style #50073 Tough and carefully lined with micro-fleece to ward off chill, the articulated soft-shell 90% Pant works for mid-to-late season hunts. It was early September and the opening day of a much-anticipated Montana archery elk hunt. “No, look down,” he whispered. One more step and I would have tripped over it. An elk shed. A huge one! The thought of a bull carrying such headgear gave me chills. That evening we set up at the convergence of two coulees, my dad calling behind me. Soon we were surrounded by a herd bull, a dozen cows, and a challenger for the harem. There was no opportunity to draw for a shot, but it didn’t matter. I was 16, and it was my first day ever elk hunting. I was more than pleased. Those first few years, I never hunted more than a mile from the truck, and always with my dad at my side. To be honest, I didn’t know a lot about the woods, how to cover country efficiently, or how to live out on my own. And what you don’t know often scares you. It was four years before I took my first elk – a rag horn with my bow. He died just 100 yards from an access road, but my inexperience turned what should have been my easiest pack out into one of my most difficult. I was entirely out of my comfort zone, but I was hooked on hunting and badly wanted to elevate my skills. And in the five years since, I become a pupil of the hunters I admire and of wild places. I’ve been fortunate to come upon many opportunities to build my skills and confidence, and I’ve jumped at each one. Last August, I spent 20 days taking photographs in Canada’s Northwest Territory, living out of a backpack and documenting the harvests of Dall sheep and mountain caribou. I tried to capture the beauty and ruggedness of the hunts and the people who make them happen. The trip really stretched me. Our party hunted remote drainages 200 miles from the nearest road, which we accessed via bush plane. We then walked 10 or more miles each day with 70-pound packs in search of game. We had run-ins with grizzlies, climbed through high, sketchy terrain, and forded waist-deep rivers cold with glacial melt. It was the most grueling and fun hunt I’d ever been part of, requiring a colossal amount of time, energy, and logistics to pull it off. The experience left me with a new perspective on what’s possible in the mountains, and also left me champing to apply some of what I’d learned to the elk country close to home. When I got home, there were still a few days before the opener, and another photo assignment – this time to Alaska – would pull me off the elk in three weeks. I left Bozeman at 2 a.m. to scout my favorite spot, and at first light seven bulls materialized in a remote basin, one a giant. I backed out, headed home, and began planning. The night before opening day, I hauled in enough food and water to last five days. I camped within striking distance of the basin, playing out the approach in my head. In the dark I would descend a 1,000-foot avalanche chute into the head of the basin. The thermals would switch at first light and the bulls would follow their morning routine along a game trail that crosses the bottom of the chute. I would wait just yards from the trail, wind in my face, arrow nocked, ready. And if the bulls cooperated, I would be neck deep into a tough pack out, nearly six miles from my truck. I chuckled at the thought of that first pack out five years prior. I stood atop the chute in the predawn dark and had a bad feeling. Experience taught me there should be bugles by now, but the basin was silent. I descended anyway, found nothing and spent the rest of opening weekend going deeper in search of the bulls. 16 What You Don’t Know Often Scares You Ambassador Steven Drake tries to evoke the response of a wary bull in the canyon below. Photo: Joel Wilson/Seacat Creative What You Don’t Know Often Scares You 17 Two weeks came and went. Time was running out, but I knew persistence was key. I pushed in by headlamp for a final go, setting up camp in the wee hours of the morning to a soundtrack of distant bugles. Sleeping out alone had once been unimaginable, but there I lay alone in my tent, miles from the truck, and slumber came easy. With knowledge and routine, I had lost my fear. In the morning, I paralleled a herd bull making for his bedding area, but a satellite bull picked me off and sent the herd into the next basin. I covered country and that afternoon got into another herd, but again couldn’t get off a shot. As evening came on, I hustled back toward camp and came across the same bull from that morning destroying a sapling less than 100 yards from my tent. He was separated from his cows, giving me only one set of eyes to worry about. I cut ground fast, and when he broke from his bout with the sapling, he angled toward me. I ranged a few trees, drew, and stopped him with a cow call at 35 yards. His front shoulder was forward, exposing vitals. I squeezed my release and watched a streak of green and white fletching close the gap. And then the ‘twang’ of an unnoticed twig sent the arrow into the dirt. I went to bed dejected, with no choice but to keep at it. There was one day left to hunt. At first light, the only sound was the drumming of a grouse. I still-hunted down a nearby ridge where I had heard bugles during the night. It wasn’t long before I spotted antlers. A six-point bull, walking up the ridge toward me, and he was close! Shoes off to get close. Photo: Joel Wilson/Seacat Creative Ambassador Steven Drake sets up spike camp in Montana’s backcountry. Photo: Joel Wilson/Seacat Creative Follow SITKA Gear Insights Find more stories from SITKA Gear Athletes and The outcome of a 3-yard shot. Photo: Shane Rickert/Seacat Creative Tribe Members at SITKAgear.com/insight At 20 yards, his head went behind a tree, and I drew. He kept coming—15 yards, 10 yards, 5 yards. The bull’s eyes went right through me, and his eye guards were about to do the same when I figured I was close enough to take a frontal shot. I squeezed the release and watched my arrow sink into his chest. He wheeled and tipped over. While I cut and packed out meat, I thought about my first season hunting elk, the autumn encounters with these awesome animals, my many mistakes. I thought about the wild trips I’d been on since, and how the experiences had evolved me. Halfway through the pack out, my friend Shane drove out to join me, providing some much-appreciated assistance and company. We got all the meat in coolers ready for processing and packed out camp and antlers just in time to make the plane to Alaska – another trip that could only expand my comfort zone. xxx xxx NEW! 90% Jacket Outerwear xxx x x xx xxxx xxx xxx xxxxx x Kelvin Lite Jacket Insulation xxxx xxxx Traverse Hoody Insulation xxx Core Hoody Next-to-Skin xx Merino Core Boxers Next-to-Skin xxx Build your system online at: SITKAgear.com/system-builder xxx STEVEN’S SYSTEM YKK Ascent Pant Outerwear 20 Dewpoint Jacket Outerwear What You Don’t Know Often Scares You Dewpoint Pant Outerwear Shooter Glove Necessity Sitka Cap Necessity Sitka Face Mask Necessity Ambassador Steven Drake packs out the last load under a full moon. The sheep hunter is willing to climb until his lungs are bursting, to walk until his legs are dead weary, to grow hungry and thirsty for great rewards.” O’Connor had it right. What I experienced during that first foray in search of sheep was a small but addictive taste of all that he describes. As a guide, I’ve had many opportunities for subsequent tastes, each one deepening my understanding of the process, increasing my respect for the animals and their habitat, and strengthening my body and mind. It’s as much an emotional and intellectual experience as a physical one. I became a guide for more than selfish reasons. I hope that all hunters get an opportunity like the one I had back in 2005 — to know the magic of the mountains, the allure of high places, and the joy that comes with great, hard-won rewards reaped among the rocky crags and in the clouds. There is the vertical terrain, the keen eyes of the prey, and the proximity the weapon demands. As with most things, the magnitude of the challenge mirrors the magnitude of reward. Even so, at some time during the adventure you usually end up questioning your sanity. THE COLDEST PLACE ON EARTH This past year, we had the opportunity to venture out in the late By SITKA Gear Athlete Tom Foss season, which offered the potential of taking a truly special ram. We knew it would be cold and difficult, but it was just our nature to embrace the forecast of heightened adversity. Throughout the summer my sons Cam and Adam and a dozen of our closest sheep hunting friends spent more than 130 mandays scouting, planning, and preparing to chase bighorns in the snowstacked skyscrapers of Alberta. Into the early fall, we canvassed a rugged 300-mile strip of the Rockies, from the Canada-US border all the way to the north of Hinton. I can’t even begin to estimate the number of miles we tallied scouting, though it was easily in the hundreds. We took thousands of photos and looked at hundreds of rams, all while training our legs, minds, and hearts for one of our most demanding hunts yet. By November, the biggest rams became more visible as they moved to their pre-rutting grounds. But this time of year brings its own share of challenges: furious blizzards, waist-deep snow, and temperatures sagging to the -30°C mark. Then as a bowhunter, the greatest complication was the wind that gusted to 60 miles an hour, driving needles of ice with the persistence of a sandblaster. At times, it was impossible to walk or even stand on the mountain. Delivering an arrow would have been unthinkable. 38 The Coldest Place on Earth Athletes Cameron and Tom Foss absorb a blast of wind-driven ice. Photo: Adam Foss/Seacat Creative The Coldest Place on Earth 39 “The sun illuminated the ram’s horns, and the rhythmic puffs of steam that poured from his nostrils turned into a string of clouds composed of tiny, angular prisms.” We carried backcountry camps into a handful of remote locations, traveling as much as eight hours each way by snowshoe. Winter had set in and slowed everything down, turning four-hour summer hikes into eight-hour slogs. It was difficult going, even with snowshoes, and we ruled out some promising areas due to snow accumulation at elevation. Conditions like these are the ultimate equipment test, and things began falling apart. My telescoping ice axe that had saved me from terrible falls and allowed me to get into places that would have been otherwise inaccessible failed. Thankfully Cam, Adam and Mike were there to share and help make a dangerous traverse possible. One particularly frigid day, my crampon blew apart when the connecting pieces shattered, leaving me with one steady foot. The roll of duct tape was divided and redeployed to hold together snowshoes, tripods and electronics. The only things that hung together were bonded by Sitka’s sewing, camaraderie, or both. Cam, Adam, and one of my closest friends – bighorn sheep guru Mike Wood – and I had been pounding the mountains together for nearly three weeks straight, getting into plenty of sheep. Our spirits were high despite the grind of the cold. These are the three toughest mountain men I know, and I was so glad they were there to share the memories that were about to unfold. At the tail end of the 19 straight day stint, we spotted a ram high on the mountain, glowing in morning light. Even though we were a mile away, I knew in my heart he was the one. Four hours on snowshoes preceded a crampon-aided ascent, gaining us 3,300 feet of elevation and admission for four to the band’s wheelhouse. The largest ram – a heavy, low-sweeping old bruiser – was patrolling his ewes on the steep snowpack. We only had to wait for an opening. It was -31°C without windchill. The four of us laid on the ram for three more hours under a vibrant blue-black sky seen only on the coldest Left: Athlete Tom Foss and team snowshoe a maze of flood debris. The sun illuminated the ram’s horns, and the rhythmic puffs of steam that poured from his nostrils turned into a string of clouds composed of tiny, angular prisms. The Coldest Place on Earth 41 It wasn’t until right at sunset that the ram finally became preoccupied with the task of pinning three ewes in a jumble of steep cliffs. Cam and I sprang into action and began closing the distance. My heart was pounding, but I was calmed by the familiar feeling of having my son at my side, ready to whisper the range like he’d done on so many stalks before. As we slipped unnoticed into shooting range, the ram turned broadside, and I attempted to turn over the cams on my completely frozen bow. After a brief, stomach-churning hangup, the familiar soft ‘thunk’ anchored me into full draw. Everything was on pause, as if the temperature had plummeted to absolute zero. Even the molecules had stopped. Then the ram was sent into motion by the touch of the arrow. The other sheep stood confused, they moved on, and the mountain’s monarch fell. We didn’t feel the cold until well into the pack out, at which point it was almost unbearable. “It’s got to be colder than the North Pole,” one of us joked. We couldn’t tell if we’d just forgotten about our frozen toes due to high spirits, or if feeling had fled with the early onset of frostbite and was just now coursing back with the hot blood of hard work. It didn’t occur to us that the temperature could have dropped much below what it had already been. What turned into a 19-hour day finally spat us out at the truck with a dream on our backs. We had added a very full chapter to the lives we are fortunate enough to live. In the giddy haze of the next day, we began assembling the data point of what we had put ourselves through over the course of the season, remembering all the miles and preparation, the frigid nights out, and the peaks Follow SITKA Gear Insights ascended. We were still insulated from the outside world, just reveling in the memories, until one piece of news Find more stories from SITKA Gear Athletes and pierced the fog. On the day prior, Calgary recorded the lowest temperature on the planet, and that joke about Tribe Members at SITKAgear.com/insight the North Pole became literal. Many thanks to everyone who cheered me on, and to all the hunting comrades who took time to help, scout, pack gear, and inspire. I wish everyone who helped had been there on the final day, though I rest easy knowing they were significantly warmer than we were. We are lucky to do the things we do, in the places we do, with the people we do. RMEF’s mission is to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife, their habitat, and our hunting heritage. Fulfilling that mission is a 7-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year venture. Since 1984, RMEF has conserved almost one square mile of elk country per day, every day, for 30 years . Making things happen in elk country is a total team effort. That team features more than 203,000 RMEF members, 10,000-plus RMEF volunteers who provide the firepower for more than 500 chapters across America, wildlife agencies and professionals, and conservation-minded partners like SITKA Gear. “The RMEF continues to hit pivotal milestones in conservation efforts,” says Jonathan Hart, SITKA founder. “It’s great to be there with them to share it.” In 2013 alone, RMEF enhanced or protected 112,760 acres of vital elk habitat toward an overall lifetime mark of more than 6.4 million acres conserved; opened or secured public access to 62,027 acres toward an overall lifetime mark of 707,000 acres; completed 562 of 8,651 lifetime projects; and provided 357 grants in 44 states for hunting heritage and conservation outreach that directly reached more than 184,000 children and adults. Continuing support from SITKA helped RMEF with two significant land transactions in 2013 that greatly benefited hunters, hikers and all those who enjoy the outdoors. The first was the Red Hill project in central Montana. RMEF purchased a mere 40-acre tract of land surrounded by huge private ranches south of Lewistown, but a 30-foot common boundary with a corner piece of public land provided crucial access to nearly 18,000 acres of the Lewis and Clark National Forest in the Big Snowy Mountains — prime habitat for elk, mule and white-tailed deer, and a wealth of other wildlife. RMEF offered the land to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks which opened the door there for hunters just in time for the 2013 general rifle season. Two months later, RMEF finalized years of hard work with a successful collaborative effort that permanently protected and opened access to 13,082 acres in the headwaters of the John Day River in northeast Oregon. The transaction also secured and improved access to tens of thousands of acres of publicly-owned National Forest System lands. The acreage was a vast checkerboard ownership pattern of alternating private and LIFETIME MEMBERS public sections, lying hard against the rugged Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. It is all now consolidated into one massive block of national forest. Everything from antelope to mountain goats thrives here, and the public We are a proud partner of RMEF and to show is now free to chase them. . . our support any individual that joins RMEF as a Life Member will receive an exclusive SITKA is proud of these significant conservation accomplishments and as a sponsor of RMEF Team Elk television, SITKA Gear, RMEF Jacket. the Great Elk Tour, RMEF’s national convention, Elk Camp, Bugle magazine and several other RMEF initiatives and programs, continues to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with RMEF in ensuring the future of elk and elk country.
