Get yourself some file folders and start labeling them: “kitchen,” “bathroom,” “living room,” “master bedroom,” and so on. Collect photos from magazines and the Internet that reflects the look you envision for your new home and store them in your folders. Now you will have a running list of pieces and ideas to look out for while shopping. Knowing well in advance what you’re looking for prepares you for those end-of-season sales that will save you money. And money saved in one area is money you can re-invest or spend on that item you thought you might have to forgo. But always remember: a great deal is not really a deal if you don’t need the piece or it doesn’t work in your space. Plan ahead! Q. A. 50#"3("*/03/0550#"3("*/ *413*$&4&5*/ 450/&03*45)&3&40.&8*((-&300. To bargain or not to bargain? That is the question. Yes, you can always bargain – especially these days! My philosophy has always been to first, find what you like, then look at the price. Everything is negotiable! This usually works because you’ll find it is not always the most expensive items that will catch your eye. If you have a budget, let the sales person know. They are there to help and will try to match your budget to a product that best suits your needs. If the item you desire is over budget, discuss this with your sales associate and ask them if they are willing to negotiate to accommodate you. If they have room to budge, they will. If they can’t, they will let the sale go, but it is certainly worth the try! Today retailers are competing for sales, and this truly is a buyer’s market. Take advantage! 00 28 Home and and Décor Décor | | July June 2009 2009 Founder and President of Toronto-based Segreti Design, Interior Designer Heather Segreti is a member of ARIDO and IDC, with more than 22 years of experience.
