The importance of conservation of historical constructions (built landscape, urban fabrics, buildings, and engineering works) are of utmost importance to preserve the cultural references of a community and was deeply discussed on March 2014, in Tomar. Under the main topics of discussion, subjects of preservation and rehabilitation methodologies and technologies, as well the importance of the economic and social impacts of preservation practices are here covered as the main leading guidelines for the conference debate. Furthermore, different communities’ scales (local, regional, national or even worldwide) and authenticity interpretation raise different questions and approaches, and therefore different solutions that are worthily to study, to compare and to experience. The sustainability approach is again covered, highlighting the importance of the commitment between heritage preservation and technical requirements related to its occupancy and use, such as energy efficiency or materials recovery. Inclusivity is also an important aspect to be discussed as public historical sites and buildings need to be adapted to receive different kind of visitors (children, elderly or handicapped persons) and to establish an adequacy with the perceiving of the physical environment and information contents. As a Special Chapter, Historical Centres are brought into a particular approach highlighting the complexity of their preservation, maintenance and rehabilitation. Historical urban fabrics raise unique problems of preservation and promotion, and have highlighted the needs of specific solutions to be applied. 5 REHAB 2015 -2nd International Conference on Preservation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historical Buildings and Structures 6 REHAB 2015 -2nd International Conference on Preservation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historical Buildings and Structures Partners 7 REHAB 2015 -2nd International Conference on Preservation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historical Buildings and Structures Venue PORTO Porto has been continuously inhabited since at least the 4th century, when the Romans referred to it as Portus Calle. It became within the last century one of the major urban areas in the Iberian Peninsula and its historical centre was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1996. Although Porto is one of the oldest European centers, this city is nowadays a busy industrial and commercial centre. The city itself isn't very populous, but the Porto metropolitan area has about 1.500.000 inhabitants in a 50 km radius, with cities such as Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia, Gondomar and Espinho. The centre of Porto tends towards the baroque and it is granitic and monumental. This can be seen mainly in the core of the downtown area: Avenida dos Aliados. The riverside shows the visitants that Porto has always been a mercantile city. Porto's geography is known as hard on the feet, but pleasant to the eye because the city is extremely hilly, with many buildings built into a cliff face that overlooks the river. Porto presents a wide range of interesting museums and monuments to visit such as “Casa da Música” and Clérigos Tower. Along the river there is the “Ribeira” (in English “riverside”) where there are a lot of bars, restaurants and places to relax and look up to the Douro river. On the other side of the river, in the riverside of Gaia, are located the wine cellars of the well known companies of Port Wine. 8 REHAB 2015 -2nd International Conference on Preservation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historical Buildings and Structures THE PALACE OF ARTS The conference venue will be at the "Palácio das Artes - Fábrica de Talentos" (Palace of Arts - Talent Factory) that is located on the historical centre of Porto, near the River Douro, at S. Domingos Square, 16-22. The building is owned by the Youth Foundation, a private non-profit national organization with the aim to support the integration of youngsters in the valor market, settled up in 1989, with the support of 21 public and private organizations. Acting on a national level, the Youth Foundation has its Headquarters in Porto, with branches in Lisbon Region (Oeiras), in the Algarve (Tavira), and on Madeira Island (Funchal). The Youth Foundation (YF) achieves its purpose by carrying out or supporting initiatives that promote the integration of young people in adult and professional life, and youth-related social and cultural activities. The Youth Foundation, beyond the Headquarters and branches, had also different infrastructures acting on a national level. 9 REHAB 2015 -2nd International Conference on Preservation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historical Buildings and Structures Conference Topics • Rehabilitation of historical sites, buildings and structures • Economics and management of historical sites, buildings and structures • Tourism and promotion of historical sites, buildings and structures • Authenticity and built heritage • Inclusivity of historical sites, buildings and structures • Inspection and monitoring of historical sites, buildings and structures • New materials and products for the rehabilitation of historical buildings and structures • Sustainability principles and practices in the rehabilitation of historical buildings and structures • Special Chapter: Historical centres 10 REHAB 2015 -2nd International Conference on Preservation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historical Buildings and Structures Scientific Committee Alessandro De Masi Polytechnic of Milan, Italy Angela Barrios Padura University of Seville, Spain Artur Feio University Lusíada, Portugal Ataa Alsalloum University of Damascus, Syria Austin Parsons Dalhousie University, Canada Carmine Falasca University “G. Municipality of Porto 30 REHAB 2015 -2nd International Conference on Preservation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historical Buildings and Structures Social Programme Visit to Port wine cellars: “Caves Ramos Pinto” Founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880, Casa Ramos Pinto rapidly became noted, at the time, for its innovative and enterprising strategy. Associated with quality bottled wines, it began operating on the Brazilian market in the early 20th century and quickly became responsible for half of the wine exported to South America, whilst it was still conquering generations of loyal customers in Portugal and Europe. These were the natural results of a forward thinking strategy, based on the modernisation of selection, batching and ageing circuits, the continuous wine research and the special care which Adriano Ramos Pinto devoted to the packaging and promotion of his wines. The Ramos Pinto wines have therefore become a reference of quality. From the very onset was born a unique collection of art objects, which are displayed today in the recently opened Museum Area - Casa Ramos Pinto. 31 REHAB 2015 -2nd International Conference on Preservation, Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Historical Buildings and Structures The taste for culture instilled by Adriano Ramos Pinto in the working philosophy of Casa Ramos Pinto, is still alive today. In 1997, Casa Ramos Pinto created the Ervamoira On-Site Museum, aimed at environmental, oenological, archaeological and anthropological research of the Vale do Côa. Researchers also have at their disposal the Historical Archives in Vila Nova de Gaia, with a precious collection of documents on the production and export of wines from the late 19th century. Aware that the quality of its wines were confined to the earth of the wine producing Douro, Casa Ramos Pinto meticulously studied this Demarcated Region, and eventually became the owners of a number of estates with very special characteristics.
