Chuck began volunteering for the basketball program by running the clock and keeping the book while a freshman at OSU. In 1962 Chuck met his future wife, Norma, who was then a cheerleader at Bishop Watterson. Four years later they were married. Chuck and Norma have three sons, Scott ’84 (Karen), Jeff ’88 (Ginger Spangler ’89) and David ’97 (Kelsey Dunning ’97). Chuck and Norma are members of the 1998 Bishop Watterson Alumni Hall of Fame and 1999 Homecoming Hall of Fame. While at Bishop Watterson, Chuck pitched a no-hitter against St. Charles at their field in 1961 to win the CCL. He pitched and won all eight league games that year and he was a four-year letter winner. Chuck was also on the basketball team and the undefeated 1960 football team. Former basketball coach Mike Winters said, “Chuck was always so professional in his duties and exemplified the values of volunteerism and sportsmanship. Because of the great job he does, he is really well known and respected in the league.” Winters and former coaches Frank Truitt and Kevin Alkire were present along with current coaches Vince Lombardo, Tom Woodford, Bob Dunning, Jim Ryan, Steve Devlin, Bill Bope, Adam Teeters and Casey Teeters. Chuck keeping score Despite the honor, Chuck still has a number of years to continue his expertise. Chuck said, “The kids are what keep me going.” Chuck Egelhoff and Marian Hutson Principal Marian Hutson presented Chuck with a letter jacket for his years of service. We want to thank all of the guests who joined us this year at the Holiday Homecoming! Proceeds from the event will enable even more students to share in the tradition and excellence of a Catholic education. Your presence at this year’s auction as a guest or as a volunteer makes you a part of the continued tradition. As alumnae of Bishop Watterson, we are grateful for the excellent educational foundation and faith formation that has served us as adult professionals. We feel that we were well prepared for our continued educational pursuits, careers, and community responsibilities. The relationships that were formed during our years at Watterson and subsequent involvement in the Bishop Watterson community have brought us untold blessings and joy. Our hope is that all the students will experience the same enrichment in their spiritual, educational, professional, and community lives that we have. We want to publicly thank each and every volunteer, as well as Marian Hutson, and the dedicated staff of the Advancement/Alumni Department for making the Eagle Auction possible. The cheerful volunteerism and generous dedication of dozens of individuals and staff are what make this event even remotely possible. John Durant, John Mahaney and Nancy Durant We have already started planning next year’s auction and would love to have you join us. Martin, the great-nephew of Bishop Watterson, donated the items to the school. While taking a tour of the building, the Wattersons visited several classrooms and spoke to the students about the man for whom the school is named. “It is important for our students to know their heritage and realize that Bishop Watterson was a real person, not just a name on the building,” commented Principal Marian Hutson. The artifacts include the Doctor of Sacred Theology diploma the Bishop earned at Georgetown in 1878, a biretta he wore after being consecrated a bishop, and a hand-carved rosary that the family believes is made from olive wood from the Holy Land. The family also donated a scrapbook that Martin’s grandfather made when his brother died. It contains the Bishop’s obituaries, lists of dignitaries who attended his funeral, eulogies, and the like. On this visit, the Wattersons donated a horse- Photo left to right: Marian Hutson, Martin, Barbara and Robert Watterson, Sister Mary Hope Sieron 12 Eagle Review Newsletter - April 2010 hair clothing brush used by Bishop Watterson. The Eagle Review Patron If you would like to benefit from publicity in The Eagle Review, the Bishop Watterson High School newsletter, Patron space is now available. Published three times per year, The Eagle Review boasts a circulation of over 5,300 alumni and friends in the Bishop Watterson community along with our internet audience at www.bishopwatterson.com. This is a tremendous opportunity to market your goods or services to a targeted audience of accomplished individuals. Patron proceeds will be used to defray production costs and will apportion more resources to other Annual Fund needs. Please review the information and return the enclosed Patron Agreement, along with your suggested Patron artwork. Camera-ready art is preferred; however, one of the following formats is also acceptable: eps, pdf, tif, or jpg. You can also submit your agreement and artwork via e-mail to Suzy Echenrode, Newsletter Editor, at bwalumni@cdeducation.org.
