Dear Friends,
IN THIS ISSUE
Letter from the Principal .....................................................2
The tremendous help and cooperation received from our
many dedicated teachers, parents, students, friends and
alumni have contributed significantly to the continued success of Bishop Watterson High School during this past
school year. We look forward to even greater accomplishments in the future.

More than 98% of the graduating Class of 2009, our most
recent alums, is attending college, and over 65% of them
earned scholarships based on merit, not financial need.
They received over $11.2 million in scholarships – this
does not include any grants. This class also amassed more
than 28,155 hours of service to those in need, making our
community a better place. This does not include the hours
given through our Sophomore Service Training Program.
Congratulations, Class of 2009!
Blessing of the Floor.............................................................5
We are very excited about our new South Addition. The
walls are up, the rooms are roughed out, the gym has been
painted and the hoops have been installed. I invite you to
come over for a hard hat tour of this work in progress. I
would love to take you around!
Eagle Sports Spotlight ..................................................11-13
Construction is scheduled to be complete by the fall so we
can begin using this space during the upcoming school
year. Mark your calendar for Sunday, September 13th!
We will be opening the time capsule that was in the cornerstone of the former convent, blessing our new cornerstone and having our final walk through. We hope you
will be able to join us for the blessing at 2:30 p.m. or just
come and tour our new addition between 2:00 p.m. and
4:00 p.m. Hope to see you there!
Graduating Seniors........................................................18-19
We continually give thanks for you and for all the support
you so generously give to Bishop Watterson High School.
May God continue to bless you and your families throughout the year. Have a safe and relaxing summer.

Spring Event
A warm spring evening was the
backdrop for the first gathering
of the Bishop Watterson
Financial Advisors Network.
Endowment Council Chair
John Stock, a local attorney
and parent of four, was our host
for the casual event held at the
Columbus Brewing Company.
Attendees included local professionals in the banking, insurance, financial planning,
accounting and legal fields.
Scott Hartman, Director of
Development at the Catholic
Foundation, came to answer
questions about the various
endowment options available to
BWHS donors.
“In meeting with our
Endowment Council, all agreed
that the biggest impact to the
Bishop Watterson Planned
Giving program will come
from heightening awareness of
the opportunities available to
leave a lasting legacy to future
BWHS students,” John
observed. “With this event, we
began the process of networking with financial professionals,
including those in banking,
accounting, financial planning,
and law, to provide information
about the planned giving
opportunities available to help
Bishop Watterson.”
In partnership with the
Catholic Foundation, BWHS
offers many planned giving
opportunities including
bequests, beneficiary designation of an IRA, 401(k) or life
insurance policy, charitable
remainder trusts, charitable
lead trusts, charitable gift
annuities, and gifts of appreciated assets. Those donors who
demonstrate a commitment to
the future of our school with a
gift to our planned giving program will become members of
the Pope John Paul II Legacy
Society, entitling them to
unique honorary gifts, invitations to exclusive recognition
events, and special appreciation
at the Heritage Day Mass and
luncheon held in the fall each
year.
The Council plans to host
more of these events, with the
concurrent goal of developing a

A Touch of New Orleans
Fr. Tony Ricard recently
brought a touch of New
Orleans to Bishop Watterson
High School. A nationally
known speaker and pastor of
Our Lady Star of the Sea in
New Orleans, Fr. Ricard challenged students to remember
that they were created in God’s
image and to live their faith by
serving others.
The senior leadership team
invited Fr. Ricard to Bishop
Watterson after hearing his
keynote address during the
National Catholic Youth
Conference which was held in
Columbus in 2007. Senior
leader Molly Vlahakis said,
“Father Tony has a special talent of opening teenagers’ eyes
to all the possibilities of our
faith. He is able to connect
this message of God’s love for
us to a more current viewpoint
of life. Seeing Father Tony at

NCYC and here at Watterson
was a blessing. He has a way
to make you laugh. He just has
a carefree way of getting you to
feel comfortable. His method
is different than a Sunday sermon, but his message is still
true and heartfelt.”
Fr. Ricard shared with students
the ongoing struggle of his
parish and parish community
to recover after Hurricane
Katrina. He stressed how
important it has been for Our
Lady Star of the Sea to call
people who lived in the neighborhood back to the community. There have been many
struggles, Fr. Ricard said, as
they have worked to rebuild
their parish, their community
and their lives. Bishop
Watterson students are raising
funds to benefit the parish in
their recovery.

experience truly made me who
I am today.
Alumni
Spotlight
Carolyn Koncal ‘98
Carolyn Koncal graduated from
Bishop Watterson High School
in 1998 but entered here as a
freshman with a larger question
than “who’s homeroom will I
be in?” Her concerns and mission were to beat cancer!
Carolyn continued her education at The Ohio State
University where she graduated
in 2002. This is her story and
how she dealt with this illness
and how she turned it into
something positive as well as
into a career.
Zoology degree in 2002.
During my last year at Ohio
State, I completed an internship working with Dolphin
Carolyn’s Story:
While still in the hospital with
my original diagnosis, I realized
there was a reason I was picked
by God for this. I knew I was
going to lose my hair, and I was
all right with that since I didn’t
like it anyway; it was much too
thin. I also knew, as an 8th
grader, I would not have to
complete my science fair project and that was a happy
moment. Part of those early
moments were mixed with
emotions; I had classmates who
came to the hospital to surprise
me on my 14th birthday, but
others who did not know what
to make of this and as they
continued with their uninterrupted lives, I became isolated.
Starting Watterson bald made
me stand out from everyone,
and being known as the bald
one was not always a great way
to be known. As much as I
enjoyed my high school years, I
did feel different than my
classmates. I viewed life differently than they did; my priorities had changed. After high
school I decided to go to
O.S.U. and graduated with a

Therapy. I saw how animals
could be used to help people
and decided to go back to
school for a Recreational
Therapy degree. I knew that I
could make a career out of
combining my desire to help
others and my love of animals
if I became a Recreational
Therapist.
During graduate school, I also
got first-hand experience on
how animals can help when my
dog became a certified therapy
dog and we visited hospitals
and nursing homes. I was also
fortunate to intern with adult
cancer patients and realized
then that my world had truly
become entwined with the cancer world. I always knew this
because as I tried to hide my
cancer from people I met, I
realized that if they did not
know that part of me, they
Over the past 5 years, I have
started to focus more on
increasing cancer awareness. I
joined Team in Training, which
is part of The Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society, and ran
my first half marathon (13.1
miles) to raise $5,000 for cancer research in honor of Jon
Koeninger. Jon was a
Watterson student who died
December 26, 1995 from undiagnosed leukemia, the same
diagnosis I had. Jon’s dad is
one of my first memories of
realizing why I was still alive
and had survived cancer. I was
able to help him realize that as
a parent there was nothing he
could have done differently to
keep his son from getting cancer. I just remember him
telling me that the doctors and
nurse told him this, but that I
was the first person he believed
since I had leukemia, too. A
few years later I trained again
and continued to raise awareness and money for Team in
Training. I ran my second half
marathon in memory of the
one girl who became my friend
during my clinic visits who
died before she was 21.
In 2006, I moved to Chapel
Hill, NC to work as a
Recreational Therapist and
now work with pediatric cancer
patients; I use my experience to
help my patients, as they too
become members of what I call
the “cancer community.”
While in Chapel Hill, I have
become chairman on the
Adolescent and Young Adult
workgroup for the NC
Comprehensive Cancer
Program. This past May, I had
the wonderful opportunity to
meet many other cancer survivors through the I’m Too
Young For This! Cancer
Foundation, also known as i2y.

affected by cancer. I have
become a passionate member of
this organization, because I
know first hand how cancer can
isolate you from the rest of the
world. I want to make sure
others don’t have to wait as
long as I did (I waited 14 years)
to find a group like this one.
i2y is only two years old and I
want to make the world aware
that i2y is out there. I hope
anyone who is reading this article and knows someone who
could benefit from i2y will visit
their website

additional information.
On February 28, 2009, I lost
my hair again. This time on
purpose; I shaved my head at a
St. Baldrick’s Foundation, head
shaving event. St. Baldrick’s
raises money for childhood
cancer research. I have shaved
my head for three reasons: 1.
I’m a childhood cancer survivor. Cancer research helped
save my life and I want to
make sure research continues
until we have a cure. 2. I have
shaved my head in support of
my friend, Amanda, who was
28 when she passed away after
fighting pancreatic cancer for
five years. 3. I loved being
bald. I always knew one day I
would shave my head again and
February 28th was the day!
I have always viewed my cancer
as a blessing and often thank
God for the wonderful opportunities I’ve had because of it.
I look forward to what the
future brings.

Jason Janoski ‘82
Jason, founder and CEO of
Columbus based creative services firm, Attaché, has been
named the recipient of the
National Biomedical
Achievement Award for 2009
by the American Red Cross
National Headquarters. Janoski
traveled to Washington D.C. to
receive his award in a ceremony
on March 26.
The award is presented annually to an individual who has fostered innovative practices to
achieve strategic priorities.
Janoski was awarded for his
significant contributions to the
mission of the Red Cross
Blood Program.
An active board member for
the Central Ohio Blood

American Red Cross for the
past six years, Janoski first
began volunteering in 1998.
“I’ve been a blood donor since
high school,” said Janoski “and,
initially, I simply wanted to use
my creative talent to increase
donorship. But over time, as
I’ve learned more about the
organization, I’ve been able to
contribute more as well.”
A major area of focus for Jason

“The Red Cross is willing to
change and grow and

but the payoff can be enormous, and I admire their ability
to challenge themselves in that
way,” said Janoski.
“Working with the Red Cross,
everyone is willing to explore
the unknown. That is fun and
exciting for me, and I get to
learn a lot, too.”

Mr. Michael Fry, 13 year veteran freshman theology teacher
at Bishop Watterson High
School, recently received the

Worthington.
Mr. Fry had studied at the
Josephinum Theologate in the
early 1980’s pursing course

and studying for the priesthood
for the Diocese of AltoonaJohnstown, Pennsylvania. In
addition to his studies he participated in the drama and

This retirement opened the

Mr. Fry did his master’s thesis

During his time as archivist
Mr. Fry has preserved the

Aided by the knowledge he

and records in fireproof safes
and non-acidic folders and
organized the massive task of

archivist, Mr. Fry contributed
to the Ohio Memory Project
for the bicentennial of the
State of Ohio; the submissions
provided by the Josephinum

Celebrating the past, present
and future…The ’62 “girls”
meet on the fourth Wednesday
of the month at Bravos on
Hayden Run for dinner at 6:00
p.m., but in December it is
usually at Jennie Diorio
Murnane’s lovely home in
Worthington. Our mystery
guest this year was Santa! aka
Jim Tippett ’62 with his wife
Peg, who is our honorary member. Our little group has
expanded; all of the gals of ’62
are welcome and in the past
year several have joined the
original “regulars”. Missing
from the picture are Sally
Miller, Phyllis Rawlins Harper
(who came after the picture
was taken) and Linda Pyle
Mahoney who passed away in
January ’09. Each time we
meet, it is a reaffirmation of the
gifts of God: family, friends
and faith which Linda modeled
in every way. On a happier
note, Kathy Strickfaden married Bobby Fracasso in
February ’09.

’59/’60
Patrick West (’59) and Mary
Louise Kearns (’60) West were
married 4/2/66 in Immaculate
Conception Church, their
home church for about as long
as they could remember.
Patrick went into the Air Force
a month later and served two
years at Lockbourne Air Force
Base (now Rickenbacker ANG
Base); they had their first two
children during those years,
Sarah (Watterson ’83) and
Theresa. The next four were
boys: Pat, Tom (Watterson
’86), Martin and Adam. For
the last 21 years, Pat could be
found manning the ovens at
Dante’s at Indianola Plaza; he
is still there. They have lived on
Clinton Heights since 1972
and all their kids grew up within walking distance of their
grandparents; Frank and
Maribelle Kearns on Amazon
Place and Judge Patrick and
Virginia West on E. Longview
Avenue. They all reside in central Ohio; the boys and their
toddlers generally breakfast
with them on Saturday mornings. Patrick is now (twice)
retired, from the practice of law
( J.D. Capital University Law
School, 1974) and from the
U.S. Postal Service. For the
past 15 years, Mary Louise has
run the before and after school
program at Immaculate
Conception and many of her
charges have passed through
Watterson’s halls during those
years. It seems like yesterday
that they were walking those
halls themselves. It is hard to
believe it has been over fifty
years! They have 17 grandchildren with #18 due on the 4th
of July.

In the Mood, A Jazz Night Out
This first annual musical event
was held on April 4, 2009.
The school gymnasium was
filled with glitz and glamour to
set the stage for a big band era
evening. Band Director, Mike
Renzi, proved to be a witty and
entertaining host. Gourmet
dining, along with live jazz featuring the Watterson Jazz
Band, the Area Honor Band,
and an Alumni Jazz Ensemble
was a unique experience for the
150 guests in attendance. Jazz
vocalist/composer, Laura
Brunner ’02 (currently residing
in New York City) and
actress/singer, Erin Thomas
’97 (currently residing in
Chicago) traveled back to
Watterson to perform and
impressed the audience with
their talented vocals. Band students served as wait staff and
mingled with guests. Over
$10,000 was raised to benefit
the furnishing and finishing of
the new Band Room.
Vision 2012 Retreat
Dear Friends of Watterson,
Having just attended our third
annual planning retreat, and as
I step down as the chair of the
Steering Committee, I would
like to reflect on where we have
been and list some of the
accomplishments we have
achieved!
In 1997 or so, Ron Shay, our
original advancement/alumni
leader, pulled together a group
that helped him advance the
school by working with him
primarily on fund raising ideas.
This group tossed around the
idea of doing a major addition
to the school, the first since the
22
’70’s. A plan was developed and
a price tag of over $10 million
was thrown out. How in the
heck would we ever be able to
do this? Our previous history
with fund raising only netted
us around $1 million 10 years
earlier.
In 2000 when Marian became
principal, she brought with her
the belief that we could achieve
much more! The advancement
committee started to meet
more regularly and a feasibility
study was performed. The
results found, after talking to
many friends of Watterson,
that there was strong support
for the school but it was not
very vocal or visible and that
they thought that our fund
raising potential was around
$4 million.
Over time a commitment was
made to move ahead with fund
raising and construction, with
Phase 1 of the plan breaking
ground in 2005 and finishing
in 2006. With this under our
belt, we decided to think longer
term. What is our long term
dream for Watterson? How can
we make it a reality? So in the
summer of 2007 we had our
first planning retreat.
Several of the advancement

committee and school leaders
attended, led by Michael
Colburn as our facilitator.
There were about 15 of us and
we answered the question
“What is our vision for
Watterson in 2012, five years
down the road?” We came up
with several exciting ideas.
Most importantly, we understood that we needed to develop the volunteer leadership at
Watterson to help us achieve
this vision. We needed to
develop committees with
friends of Watterson who have
specific skills to help us achieve
our goals!
With this in mind we established several councils;
Marketing, Facilities, Alumni,
Advancement and Capital
Campaign, and a central
Steering Committee, to coordinate the overall activities. Over
the last few years we have had
two more retreats where we
have measured our progress
against our stated goals. What
we have learned is exciting!
First, we have confirmed that
What have we achieved
through all of these efforts? I
believe that the most significant achievement so far is that
a large number of people now
BELIEVE that we can achieve
our vision for Watterson
because we have laid the right
foundation of having a strong
What caused them to do this?
It became pretty clear for me.
They invested in creating a
strong vision, the Declaration
of Independence and the
Constitution, and they put a
tremendous amount of effort
into building the supporting
structure to make it a reality. It
teers all working together to
create an exciting, welcoming,
Catholic environment that really made me as a parent want to
have my son attend Watterson.
The Marketing Committee
helped take this event to a
higher level because of the
expertise and passion of several

there is a huge untapped
resource available to us of very
talented friends of Watterson.
Second, when we organize
them properly and put them on
the right council, their energy
can be harnessed to do great
things, to take Watterson to the
next level and achieve our
vision! Third, there has been
the need to adjust our structure
and to integrate with other
parts of the school, such as
school board, and to add councils, Finance, and IT and perhaps a Co-Curricular Council.
Fourth, we have seen the need
to change. This has taken
strong leadership. Marian and
the leadership staff have
opened the books, adjusted the
way things are done, and developed new habits with the input
of these councils.
organization with a clear
vision! It is not just Marian’s
vision any more; there were 35
people who invested all day at
our third retreat because they
believe!
This past winter I spent many
hours watching and reading the
John Adams HBO series and
reading the book about his life.
One of my take-a-ways from
that experience was the courage
and sacrifice with which he and
so many others acted. He was
in Philadelphia planning for
the future of this great country
while his wife and kids were
back in Boston with all kinds
of sickness killing a large percentage of the population, and
knowing full well that they
were risking everything they
had on a dream.
is not by luck that the United
States of America is a great
country! With the clear vision
and the organization that could
help obtain this vision many
people were willing to do
whatever it took for this country. I believe that what we have
been doing is similar.
Watterson has been the heart
of our Catholic community for
over 50 years now. We have the
opportunity to help ensure that
it not only continues to exist,
but also continue with a strong
heart. This heart is loud, and it
is leading our Catholic community to be the best it can be!
I had an opportunity to witness
this first hand over the past few
months. My son, Andrew, will
be a freshman this year. We
attended the Open House, and
I was amazed at what I saw.

people. When we look at the
vision for Watterson we see a
place where the students, staff
and parents have a great
Catholic experience that carries
over to their involvement with
Watterson and their Catholic
community for the rest of their
lives! To me this Open House
was a great confirmation that
we are getting there!
Greg Bauer will be stepping
into the leadership of the
Steering Committee. He will
do a great job and I look forward to supporting him by
helping develop a plan for
2015! Thanks and may God
continue to bless Bishop
Watterson High School!

CLASS REUNION CHALLENGE
Class of ’58 • Class of ’63 • Class of ’68 • Class of ’73 • Class of ’83
Class of ’88 • Class of ’93 • Class of ’98
For those of you who had Class Reunions this past summer, congratulations on celebrating the
anniversary of your graduation from Bishop Watterson High School!
As you are already aware, we have extended a “Class Reunion Challenge.” In appreciation of your experience at Bishop Watterson and in
support of future generations, we hope you consider a pledge of $100 per year for the next five years. When 40% of the members from your
class make a commitment to our Capital Campaign, your class will be given the naming rights to a bleacher section in the new gymnasium.
Your commitment to your alma mater will be proudly displayed for visitors, alumni and friends for many years to come. We know that you
will do what you can to assist us in this important undertaking and we are grateful for your generosity.
We were very excited to break ground this past summer for the South Addition, which will provide space for class liturgies, a guidance and
career center, music rooms and athletic facilities that will benefit every student. While there is much work to be done if we are to reach our
goal, we remain confident that our efforts will be rewarded and that we will maintain our “tradition of excellence” in Catholic education.
We cannot succeed without your continued help!
