Since 1983 the International Youth Meeting is a place for young people from
all over the world to discuss social and political issues concerning the past, the
present and the future. Young people will look at the history of the concentration camp at Dachau, National Socialism, former and present forms of racism and
antisemitism, as well as exclution and discrimination. The principles of exchanging
ideas, experiencing different social and cultures identities, as well as Holocaust
education and imparting tolerance are the core ideals of the International Youth
Meeting.
The International Youth Meeting is primarily organized by a team of volunteers.
Many survivors of the National Socialist regime will talk about their personal
experiences of persecution, whether in the concentration or labor camps or working
in the resistance.
Background
remembering
In March 1933 one of the first Nazi concentration camps was established
in Dachau, near Munich. The Dachau concentration camp became a model
for other concentration camps and also a place to train the Nazi-elites of the SS.
Over 200,000 people from different countries were imprisoned in Dachau
between 1933 and 1945. Numerous prisoners died from terror and the
consequences of inhuman practises, disease, exhaustion and hunger.
Due to the efforts of survivors, the memorial site was created in 1965.
The first International Youth Meeting, founded by young
people from and around the town of Dachau, took place in 1983.

Program:
Remembring - meeting - understanding
- working for the future. This is the motto
for the two weeks of the International Youthmeeting Dachau.
We get intensively involved with the history
of National Socialism. Over and over we again ask the questions: „Have we learnd
something from it? Where do we find racism and exculusion today?“
From the beginning the IYM was accompanied by eye-witnesses and Holocaust
survivors, who tell their stories and give facts a face.
The multifaceted program includes eyewitnes talks, guided tours through the
Memorial site, excursions and different workshops.
Of course there is time to meet people from all over the world and to
get to know each other. There will be sport, creativ activities and parties as
well. So you will get to know a lot of young people from all over the world.
Because many cultures come together, history is experienced in a more
universal way, and participants have the opportunity to get to know historical
events from a new perspective.
