We are busy at the Nature Center, no matter what time of year it is!
Whether it’s educational programs, school outreach, a call to pick up
an injured raptor or leading a walk across the Pequotsepos Brook to
the Coogan Farm, we have a lot on our plates! We know that 2016 will
be even more action-packed, as we embark on a yearlong ‘Celebrate
70’ campaign to mark our 70th anniversary.
On April 25, 1946, a group gathered to officially create The Pequot-sepos Wildlife Sanctuary. Originally envisioned by a local environmental champion, Adele Erisman (19092014) at a Mystic Garden Club presentation, the purpose of this new organization would
be to “encourage the study and love of Nature by acquiring, developing and maintaining
a bird and wildlife sanctuary and a museum and library … by holding classes, exhibits or
lectures; issuing publications, and by any other means approved by the Trustees.” The
beautiful and diverse Denison Society land was identified as a perfect location, and an
enduring partnership was formed that continues to this day.
We will mark this milestone year through special events and programs, (including a few
parties!) that will cover the gamut of the Center’s past, present and future— what the
Nature Center means to each of us and to the community at large. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and our website as details are finalized on everything from a ‘Moth Ball’ to a
retrospective of our Natural History Calendar artwork and a ‘Farmers to Owls’ trail run.

Celebrate 70
our group of ‘Celebrate 70’ ambassadors. We value your ideas, wisdom and perspective!
Seventy years ago a group of interested residents and organizations knew that it was
important to create a place where wildlife and its habitat would be the top priority, and
where people would have opportunities to connect with nature. Today that focus is
more important than ever, and while the Nature Center has stayed true to its core founding mission, we have expanded our role in conservation and land stewardship. We continue to explore inter-relationships to better understand our place in nature and our
responsibilities to protect it through programs and activities that include sustainable
agriculture, history, art, cooking, music and recreation. We work hard to lead the way in
environmental thought and action for our region, state and even all of New England, and
we thank you for joining us on this exciting journey.

What do you do as a DPNC volunteer? I volunteer at the
DPNC’s Coogan Farm Giving Garden. My ac vi es include field
prepara on (rock clearing, soil restora on, etc.), the usual garden ac vi es of plan ng, cul va ng
and harves ng, as well as serving on the leader team for the Garden. I also photograph and post
many volunteer ac vi es and the garden’s seasonal progression on the Giving Garden Facebook
page.
How long have you been doing it? 2 years
Why do you do it? I was looking to expand my community involvement through par cipa on
in a group dedicated to allevia ng food insecurity in New London County.
What’s the genesis of your wonderful support for the Nature Center? I became aware of
the Coogan Farm project and the need for volunteers through a story published in the Day in 2014.
I have been ac ve in this project since spring of 2014, par cipa ng in field clearing in the plan ng
area. When me came to form defined gardening groups, I was invited by Jane Allen to join the
group she was organizing with members of the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in New London. I returned to the Garden this spring.
What’s your favorite part of what you do at DPNC? I have so many favorite ac vi es in the
garden – the journey from seed to sprout to mature flowering plant and a ripe farm-fresh vegetable
that is crated and loaded into the United Way Gemma E. Moran Food Bank truck. On a personal
note, I have received such great benefit from this ac vity. When you volunteer, you increase the
number of “people with good hearts” in your life. I have been made the richer for knowing the
garden’s many volunteers. I was surprised to realize one day, as I was leaving the garden, that I felt
such a peaceful sense of well-being. You just can’t beat that kind of return from an ac vity.

Meet … Shawn Bittman
Our animal care department wears a lot of hats. Under the umbrella of animal care
are all our resident animals, from Bullfrogs to Rat Snakes, Barred Owls to Red
Tailed Hawks. We have more than two dozen animals that live with us because
they cannot be released into the wild. Some are part of our education programs,
and some simply make their home with us.
Additionally, animal care is the department that takes in the injured or sick mammals and birds that come to us from the community. Nearly every day, the Nature
Center fields at least one call (and sometimes a visit) regarding an injured or ill animal. Our animal care workers evaluate the situation, and determine if the animal can
be released, can be cared for by us, or needs medical attention. Sometimes an animal is with us for an hour; sometimes it is with us for days, weeks, months or years.
The department relies on a stable of well trained and amazingly dedicated volunteers. For several years, Laura Craver-Rogers oversaw animal care. Laura has
moved into an administrative/education position and our new Animal Curator is
Shawn Bittman. We caught up with Shawn recently and he answered a few questions for us. Shawn came to DPNC as a college intern last Spring.

How long have you worked at DPNC: Eight months
What is your current position? Animal care manager/educator
What’s the best part about your job? I love the one-on-one opportunities to connect
with animals. I have a huge passion for the animal world and thoroughly enjoy
inspiring others to love nature and wildlife too.
What’s the best part about the DPNC? The best part about DPNC is the feeling of
community. Whether I run into visitors or fellow educators, everyone is always
looking to learn or share their knowledge. Every day at the nature center always
brings something new.
What do people ask you most often when they find out you work at a Nature
Center? People often ask “What types of animals do you have at the Nature
Center?”
What surprises you about your job? It always surprises me the vast variety of ques-
tions people come up with during programs. By the end of each program I always
end up teaching and talking about a lot more than I had originally planned to.
Favorite animal, plant, or ... (and why): I have always thought of salamanders as
my favorite animal. They are so diverse and have so many unique characteristics
that allow them survive in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Did you know that
“amphibian” directly translates to “double life” in Greek? It is also fascinating how
well salamanders can regenerate body tissue, having the ability to regenerate and
repair their tail, limbs, eyes, jaw, brain, spinal cord, and even their heart!

annual afternoon of classical music! Violinist (and Stonington native) Hilary
Castle will bring along special guest artists for this concert to benefit the Nature
Center’s educational programs and celebrate 70 years of conservation and education. Light refreshments.
Women in the Woods 2016
Last year our inaugural Women in the Woods program was an inspiration. A
dozen women from Connecticut and Long Island gathered at the DPNC for a
weekend of outdoor exploration and luxury! Our partner, Inn at Mystic/Harbour
House, provides wonderful accommodations, two breakfasts and one dinner,
while our educators share their knowledge on topics ranging from astronomy to
birding to orienteering. We’ll enjoy stargazing, meet and greet our resident owls
and other animals, campfire cooking, hiking, identification of local trees, birds,
flowers, and wild edibles. Registration now open!

Pre-registra on allows the Nature Center to secure staﬃng and materials for programs, so that we may
best serve you. We require pre-registra on and pre-payment for most programs in order to reserve a space.
If DPNC cancels a program, you will receive a full refund. If you withdraw from a program more than 4 days in
advance, you will receive a refund less a 25% administra ve fee. Withdrawals within 4 days of a program are
not refundable.

This mile long trail runs from Mistuxet Avenue to Coogan Boulevard, connecting
with the Denison Farm Trail. It crosses old stone bridges and an abandoned
quarry pond and traverses Avalonia Land Trust, Denison Homestead, and Mystic
Marinelife Aquarium properties.

the Mystic River. In February we will start at the Yellow House (149 Water St,

Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is one of the premier winter birding locations in coastal New England. This is typically a rewarding trip to look for

This four-part workshop takes you through the steps of having your own colony.
Led by Stuart Woronecki, owner of Stonewall Apiary in Hanover, who keeps
approximately 240 honeybee colonies in eastern CT. Participants will have the
opportunity to take a field trip to a Stonewall Apiary bee yard and purchase equipment. Package bees can be reserved. Note: Limited number of bees available.

Bring your Valentine to a special walk, tasting and talk at Coogan Farm co-sponsored by Capizzano Olive Oils. Love is in the air during the month before the
official start of spring! Sample olive oils, discover subtle differences in aroma and
taste and discuss culinary and other uses of specialty oils. We will also sample
locally produced wines and dark chocolates, along with hearty hors d’oeuvres and
non-sugar alternatives. Depending on the weather, we will take an optional short
sunset walk around the farm at 5:30 to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of a
late winter evening.
Avery Farmhouse Book Club: A Walk in the Woods

Cozy up in the parlor of the Coogan Farm and enjoy some coffee, tea and snacks
as we discuss books with environmental themes. A Walk in the Woods is a 1998
book by travel writer Bill Bryson, describing his attempt to walk the Appalachian
Trail with his friend. The book is written in a humorous style, interspersed with
more serious discussions of matters relating to the trail’s history, and the surrounding sociology, ecology, trees, plants, animals and people.

tree identification, and to meet our neighbors the oaks, hickories, maples, birches

Join acclaimed author, Doug Thompson, as he discusses his book, The Quest for
the Golden Trout: Environmental Loss and America’s Iconic Fish, which was published in October 2013. As a specialist in the physical characteristics of rivers,
Thompson provides a unique perspective on the impact of human manipulation of
river environments for trout fishing. He is one of the world’s foremost experts on
pool and riffle features and one of the leading authorities on the history of river
restoration in the United States. He has written more than 30 scientific articles and
book chapters, and offered more than 50 scientific presentations. The Quest for the
Golden Trout is about looking at our nation’s rivers with a more critical eye—and
asking more questions about both historic and current practices in fisheries management. “It suggests that Douglas M. Thompson is correct in his book-length
critique of American fishing tradition, The Quest for the Golden Trout: anglers often

Do you know what pH stands for? Do you know where nitrates come from? Join
us for an in-depth look at the health of our pond. We will use chemical tests to
determine the pH, nitrate levels and phosphate levels in the water. We will also use
nets to capture macroinvertebrates, study them under the microscopes, and use
them as bioindicators for the health of our pond. Adults.
Ramps & Robins
Wednesday, April 27
5-7:30 p.m.
A walk and cooking demonstration at the Peace Sanctuary and Coogan Farm. Learn
about harvesting and cooking wild leeks (ramps), one of the earliest, most delicious
and nutritious of local wild edibles. Meet at the Peace Sanctuary on River Road in
Mystic for a short easy walk to look for spring wildflowers, greens and ramps,
accompanied by the music of robins and other songbirds in the forest. We will drive
over to Coogan Farm for a cooking demonstration and discussion on using ramps
and other seasonal specialties. Led by Maggie Jones.
Avery Farmhouse Book Club: Crow Planet

as we discuss books with environmental themes. Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom
from the Urban Wilderness, was written in 2009 by Lyanda Lynn Haupt. The abundance of crows in our world is both an indicator of ecological imbalance and a
generous opportunity to connect with the animal world. Even in developed areas of
cities and suburbs, we are surrounded by crows and other wildlife. Through observing them we can enhance our appreciation of the world’s natural order. Program

Leaping Frogs and Slithering Salamanders

Amphibians lead a double life from pond to land. We will examine the various life
stages of different species from frogs to salamanders, learn when and where they
lay their eggs, as well as head out to explore nature center wetlands. Wear boots

Let’s Go Fly a Kite!

our understanding. The processes of observing, drawing, reading and descriptive
writing will all be used to create a beautiful journal. This time-honored approach
to learning is the lifelong tool that allows each person to deepen their appreciation of the natural world. Drawing inspiration from Naturalists around the world,
we will tackle subjects that include habitats/ecosystems, insects/life cycles,
birds/eggs/nests, trees/flowers, mammals and more! Led by Mame Courtney.

Nuts Over Squirrels
Monday, Jan. 18

Ages 5-12.
Be ready for Squirrel Appreciation Day on Jan. 21! Learn all about our furry
friends who stay active all winter long. We’ll become squirrel detectives and head
outside to see how many squirrels we can spot. We’ll play games, make a craft,
and learn everything there is to know about these often misunderstood animals.
Dress for the weather. Bring a bagged lunch.
Afternoon Adventures

Ages 5-12.
Enjoy an afternoon of free play at the Nature Center. We will build snow sculptures and snow forts, go on a hike, and roast marshmallows around a fire (in the

Presidents Day
Don’t Wake the Bears!
Monday, Feb. 15

Don’t wake the bears ...or the bats, snakes or turtles! We will learn all about how
and why animals hibernate, and why they shouldn’t be disturbed or woken up.
Some animals hibernate or experience torpor, while others have to migrate to
warmer areas. Still others stay active all winter long...brrrr! We’ll hike our trails to
find good spots to hibernate, but we’ll be careful not to wake any hibernators up!
Includes live animals, furs, games and crafts. We’ll warm up by the fireplace!
Dress for the weather and bring a bagged lunch.

Tuesday, Feb. 16

Students will create works of art, inspired by nature, natural themes, and the environment! We’ll spend time outside gathering inspiration and materials, and return

Creepers and Leapers
Wednesday, April 20
9 am-1 pm
Leaping lizards, slithering snakes, and jumping frogs! We’ll stay as active as a
frog in the pond during this fun vacation day program. Play a lot of games, meet
some of our local amphibians and reptiles, and go on an expedition to find as
many frogs, toads and salamanders as we can! Dress for the weather and bring

Butterflies and Buzzing Bees

Explore the meadows and count the colorful pollinators as they fly by! Learn
about the special traits of butterflies, bees, and other insects through games,

Ages 5-12.
Spring time is an “eggs-cellent” time for learning about eggs! Birds are busy laying eggs in their nests...but they’re not the only ones! We’ll learn about all kinds
of egg-laying animals, including fish, frogs, turtles, snakes, insects, and more.
