It can happen only to the KING OF OPENING – THALA AJITH. 91 Shows in a Multiplex (Mayajaal) on a single day, 80% of the multi-screen theaters will be running only Arrambam for the first 2 days on all screens, Single screen theaters which were releasing AAA & Pandiya Naadu on 2nd Nov (Saturday), had bought Arrambam for a huge price for releasing it in their theaters for just 2 days. Almost all the shows for the first 4 days are full, which means, approximately 1000 shows are full. Though the movie releases in record number of theaters in Tamil Nadu, people are finding it difficult to even get a single seat for the first week. This clearly shows that movie is not only expected by AJITH Fans but also the general public. Initial Collection Report for the movie is definitely going to be a RECORD one without any doubt. Let us see whether Ajith + Vishnu combo satisfies Ajith Fans & Common Man yet again in this review. Story: There was rumour going around that movie is inspiration of Hollywood Movie “Sword Fish”. Arrambam is based on real life incident and it is not inspiration from any movie in the world. Theme of the movie is social oriented one and it much needed one for our NATION. Story of the movie can be written within a line or two, but the screenplay of the movie in the first half was extremely fast and will satisfy anyone whoever watches the movie. In the first half, Ajith almost plays Villain role. After Superstar, only Thala can do a negative role & get applause from the audience.. His Introduction scene in the movie was a normal one, but even then his fans will like it. In the first half, he looks Sathish Kumar www.facebook.com/Tamil.News.Reviews O R AT E L E I S U R E N E W S PA P E R www.theshoppingexpress.in FREE CIRCULATION extremely stylish & charming. His Charismatic looks with cute expressions in the first half will be a Visual Treat for everyone and fans may watch the movie thrice for the first half alone. His role in the second half is quite different from the first half; he has really underplayed it in the f lash back. Though it is a multistarrer movie, he carries the whole movie on his own shoulders asusual. He even drives his favourite Ducati in a scene. You can see the hardwork & dedication of Ajith in various scenes. This will be one of the best movies in his career. Almost all the supporting actors (Arya, Nayanthara, Taapsee) have got good screen presence in the movie. Arya's characterization in the movie was too good and he has done a commendable Rating: job. He occupies the screen for 15 minutes after Ajith’s introduction song. His scenes in the movie were really good and he has wonderful dialogues praising Thala in the second half. Nayanthara has equal screen presence along with Ajith and has acted well. Taapsee looks beautiful and fits the character. Overall, Arrambam has excellent first half with interesting screenplay, usualf lashback scenes in the second half with good message to the society in the climax. For Thala fans, will be much than their Thala and it is the best treat, they can receive their Thala. Global Political Tectonic Quake T he Earth's surface is an assembly of a series of large plates like pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle. These plates are constantly moving a few centimetres per year. The ocean f loors are continually moving, spreading from the centre and sinking at the edges. Convection currents beneath these plates move them around in different directions. The source of heat driving the convection currents is radioactive decay happening deep in the Earth. Some plates travel faster than its neighbour and pressure builds up. Eventually a tectonic earthquake results, destroying lives and manmade structures like buildings, bridges, roads, ports and dams. A future catastrophe imposed by nature cannot be fully predicted or averted, but through better designs, the damage can be mitigated. Currently a global political tectonic movement is being detected. Indians are very busy with the country’s internal politics and at best we are concerned about what is happening on our borders. We need to set our sight at a much larger picture and take preventive action to mitigate the possible catastrophe that may hit us in the form of a political quake. If we thought that the end of the cold war achieved by the forced split of the Soviet Union, which was necessitated by the fear of communism, has solved all problems of the world, we would be living in delusion. We need to reassess the current political and economic development across the globe. India may well be the epicentre of damage, if we do not formulate its response. The most threatening cause of the problematic situation is the growing distance between US and its close ally Saudi Arabia. For decades the two countries have been acting in unison strategic reasons. US has needed oil security and the ruling family of Saudi Arabia has always felt insecure against their neighbours, particularly Iran, Iraq and Syria, and has heavily depended on the supply of arms and fighter planes from US. EDITOR - LOGUE did not support it. The Saudis have exhibited their anger by refusing to take a seat on the Security Council. Saudi rulers have reason to suspect a shift in US policy. They certainly know that their use by date is over as far as the US oil dependency on them is concerned. USA has large reserves of shale gas which is rapidly increasing as a source of natural gas and it is becoming a preferred fuel for US power plants. USA has invented technologies to make it an economically viable source. Secondly the Saudi rulers are also feeling less and less confident of the sustainability of monarchy when all round their country, there are mass uprisings. The US government seems to be distancing itself from them at this critical juncture and their anger is understandable. But then USA has its own compulsions, right? In the current low of relations with US, the Saudis have indicated that they are looking at other options. In a recent article in New Indian Express, former Professor of Sociology Upendra Sharma has stated that the Dying King Abdullah may be dreaming of a RyadhBeijing axis as his legacy. This will include an added benefit of displacing enemy Iran as a supreme matter of national security for the Chinese. Beijing would also benefit from the assured additional oil supply to supplement supplies from Iran through a land pipeline, and a consumer market for its products. China has already entered Saudi Arabia in a big way in its infrastructure sector with Chinese companies grabbing contracts in every sector ranging from power stations to railways. This is along with an outwardly opposition to Saudi Arabia’s stance against Iran in the UN. The above realignment will be an earth shaking tectonic movement. Is India planning forward to meet this catastrophe? At least the UPA Government has proved itself incapable of even managing India’s relationship with its neighbours effectively. Mired in corruption it is in a limbo and has also failed to give a direction to the country’s economy, education, health, infrastructure and food security. In the meanwhile, time is running out. We can only pray for our future! Lately Saudis are miffed at US for its conciliatory attitude towards its erstwhile foe Iran and its last minute refusal to attack Syria after allegations of use of chemical weapons. Moreover when Saudi helped Bahrain to crush an anti Government revolt in 2011, US To lift your spirits, my best wishes for a Happy Diwali! Jay Prakash. The Festival of Lights is called Diwali, Dipavali and Deepavali. The word is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Deepavali’ – Deepa: light; Avali: a row. It is primarily celebrated with the lighting of earthen lamps or diyas that are filled with oil or ghee at sunset. People clean their homes and surroundings, wear new clothing, burst crackers and distribute sweets and presents to family and friends and share their bounty with the needy. Another legend associated with this festival is the end of King Bali who was destroyed by Lord Vishnu who took the incarnation of a Brahmin dwarf, Vamana. He asked king Bali for land that Vamana could measure with three strides. The figure of Vamana created an illusion and Bali readily agreed. Lord Vishnu took his original form and covered the whole of earth and heaven with two footsteps. The third step was accommodated by King Bali on his head and was pushed down into the underworld. Lord Vishnu granted him a boon of being able to visit his kingdom once a year and that day is celebrated as Diwali. In the north of India Diwali is the celebration of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya. Dussera celebrated the war between Rama and Ravana with the killing of the demons in the final days of Navaratri. Rama is supposed to have f lown back to Ayodhya in Kubera’s Pushpak Vimaanam, an aerial chariot, that was in the possession of Ravana. Rama reached Ayodhya on the day before the New Moon of Kataka and the people lit lamps to signify the period of darkness that had enveloped the country since his exile fourteen years ago. Goddess Lakshmi is associated with this festival of Diwali. According to the Puranas, during the churning of the ocean of milk by the Devas (Gods) and the Daanavas (demons), Lakshmi emerged from it. This event was celebrated with great joy as she was considered to be the embodiment of wealth, prosperity (both material and spiritual), fortune, fertility, generosity, courage and wisdom. Another account says that Diwali was the day that Lord Vishnu, who is the protector of the universe, married Goddess Lakshmi. This marriage is symbolic of the connection between preservation and wealth. The word ‘Lakshmi’ is derived from Laks, meaning ‘to perceive or observe’ which is synonymous with the word ‘Lakshya’ meaning ‘the goal’. So Goddess Lakshmi also represents ‘the final goal’ of life. All the symbols associated with her stands for the highest stage of perfection and development in a person’s life. Lakshmi is also called ‘shree’ because she has six auspicious and divine qualities, or Gunas. She is the source of strength even to Lord Narayana. So, Sri Lakshmi, means wealth of any kind. As Mahalakshmi, she brings good luck and protects her devotees from misery and material sorrows. In South India, Deepavali is the festival of lights that celebrates the victory of Lord Krishna over the fierce demon Narakasura who had unleashed a reign of terror on earth and troubled the inhabitants. Deepavali is celebrated in Tamil Nadu in the month of Aipasi (Thula month) on the day preceding amavasai, the day of the new moon. The preparations begin a week before with housewives making various savouries—murukku, thenkuzhal, mixture and ribbon pakoda and sweets like Badam halwa, Mysorepak, badam cakes etc.. The Deepavali marundu or lehyam, a gooey sweet fudge of herbs and honey and gur, is made on the eve of the festival. Whatever the method or practices of celebrations, they remind us that there is always victory of light over darkness, good over evil and prosperity come to those who worship the divine. - Padmini Natarajan The power of smile A Smile is a beautiful thing, the universal expression of happiness. Smile can be freely given to everyone around you. A smile is the curve that straightens things out! • By definition we can say that ‘A smile is a facial expression formed by f lexing those muscles near both ends of the mouth.’ The smile can also be found around the eyes (corners of your eyes crinkle when you smile!). Smile is the best thing we can do to our face. Smile is like a classic that never runs out of style! Several organisations emphasis the power of smile. Employees are constantly trained that body language is an important tool in winning people over and the easiest amongst all is to Smile! So, we can say that a ‘smile’ remains the single biggest factor, inf luencing the body language. Types of smiles: Smiles can be genuine, false or condescending. They can ref lect any of the following emotions: fear, happiness, contentment, warmth, contempt. Let’s look at how smile helps at workplace: • The best rapport-building tool: If you have newly joined an organisation, then this is the best tool that you have in making new friends at work, breaking the ice. Smile connects easily and maintains attention. So, go on and be the first to smile. :-) •A smile is the most powerful nonverbal communication. • Smiling at an interviewer indicates that you have an open, warm personality. However, avoid grinning ridiculously at an interview or a business meeting. Can you imagine that situation? How terribly wrong it could go? I bet thinking of that brought a smile to your face. • Breaks down walls of indifference: Smile can be used to set wrongs right. We all know that people can be quite judgemental. They form opinions based • on how people dress, their facial expressions, how they carry themselves. Smile could be the first concrete step in ironing out conf licts or misunderstandings. It is an effective method to de-stress most difficult situations at work between colleagues Helps you be positive: A smile can brighten your mood, thereby helping you project a positive outlook. This can further lead you to make positive, right decisions. When we smile and remain cheerful and positive, our mood brightens up and affects our responses towards our colleagues, clients. It can be used in business dealings, in closing deals. In call centres, the team members are trained to smile when they speak to the customers on the phone. Your smile can even be heard in your voice! How it can be used for personal reasons: • Smiles improve your overall appearance, helps make the Right Impression! • Use the smile when you are attracted to someone, to catch their attention. • While watching a happy movie, while shopping, dining out, while singing a song • When you are happy to see someone or greet people whom you like. • At times its used to "make fun" of people • Makes your overall life good : our brain sends positive vibes when you smile. Can you try thinking anything negative when you have a beautiful, happy smile on your face? No! Natural Drug: Smiling releases endorphins and serotonin – which is the feel-good chemical that makes you feel ‘light’. It is a natural painkiller. It’s a great stress buster! A smile is so powerful that it can help improve your life and the life of people around you. So go ahead, smile all you want and spread happiness! Here's wishing all my readers and their families a very Happy Diwali ! Thank for you for all the love and support! Keep Smiling! :-) :-) Asha Daniel Director and Chief Image Consultant Imago Image Consulting email : asha@imagoimageconsulting.com Disclaimer : We are Not Responsible for and Do Not Necessarily hold the opinions expressed by our content contributors. Nov 01, 2013 THE SHOPPING EXPRESS 5 THE SHOPPING EXPRESS A public gossip is one, which has already gone viral. If a private gossip is juicy enough to sustain interest with many victims under its belt, it has the potential to become widespread and ultimately hit one of the social media these days. To achieve this status, it needs a protagonist who is a public figure. For example one popular joke about Marilyn Monroe runs like this. She was asked by a friend whether it was true that she had absolutely nothing on while appearing in a public function and pat came the reply “Of course I had my transistor radio on!” Another related to Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. Everyone admired him being f luent in so many languages, but few complimented him on his greater ability to keep silent in all of those languages! Prime Minister Nehru’s liaison with Lady Mountbatten was a closely guarded secret for long except for occasional gossips in elite circles. The letters exchanged between the two were finally revealed and the truth was out thanks to the Lady’s daughter. Men Actually, men have not lagged behind women in gossiping. Big bosses in corporate circles are targeted by their disgruntled subordinates by gossips. The more successful executives also suffer at the hands of their less successful colleagues who plant all types of stories about how their success was achieved by currying favour and not through superior performance. The celluloid world can take the credit for being the source of many gossips. The public thirsts for juicy stories about the stars and celebratory stars themselves launch gossips about themselves to stay in the instant memory recall of fans just before the release of their films. Page 3 editors, TV media and producers of film glossies seek such stories to stay af loat. Film sector gossip is big business. The normal plot for such stories is pre and post marital clandestine affairs. Cell phones, Facebook and Twitter are today market leaders in multiplying and spreading gossips across the world instantaneously. In the political world, what was believed to be motivated gossip a few years or months ago has today become a chillingly true story. Reality has been found far worse than the earlier gossips. Look at Coalgate, 2G spectrum, Radia tapes etc. The latest revelation in Coal-gate is evidence of arm twisting, threats and blackmail of top bureaucrats by ministers under the gaze of PM. Here is a sample of a hot gossip. A private limited company with the name of a huge desert has unlawfully gathered an astronomical sum. Its owner adopted the company’s name as his surname. Its strength came from its political connections since many politicians parked their black money with it for high interests. Suddenly a regulator woke up and challenged it. Being too big and inf luential, even the Apex court has not been able to discipline it for over a year, since it is playing hide and seek. Gossip and beverages go together as both are full of froth. The office coffee machine is a real hotbed of gossip. The tea shop in every nook and corner of India is the seat of hot pressed news that is mostly gossip. A cup of tea between neighbours over the fence or in apartment house corridors encourages the exchange of ‘today’s news’! Where are you at this moment? editor@theshoppingexpress.in One classification of gossip is (i) Private and (ii) Public. When it is a private gossip the person in possession of a juicy information or story will build suspense by cautioning the listener that the information was a secret that should not be shared with anyone else. Occasionally the listener will be given a limited freedom to divulge the information without mentioning the source. The element of secrecy is a ploy for buying in the listener. It will automatically make the listener feel very special and close to the gossiper and he will all be ears. Attention having been assured, the narrator of the gossip will spin his yarn confidently. After all, the narrator is only looking for a credulous victim. Both the story weaver and his victim know that the demand for secrecy by the giver of the gossip and the assurance by the victim not to pass it on have no sanctity. Within minutes or hours the listener will in turn become the narrator and find another victim and the news will be spread effectively by the word of mouth. unfairly blame women for gossips. Till recently, women were mostly confined to their homes. Their only sources of information were their neighbours, house help and friends in social gatherings. This ‘pass the news’ became contaminated and embellished as it travelled by word of mouth. The successive versions, aided by creativity and imagination, naturally became a spicy gossip. Email Gossip is interesting—well.. to gossip about. Gossip is often a light informal conversation for social occasions. The subject matter is usually a juicy titbit or even a malicious report about the behaviour of other people. For most of us it is only a time pass activity.
