Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose after normal education has been interrupted. 21 25 Mon Sun 27 Sun During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career. 27 Sun 29 Tues The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century. The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered. At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people which are organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible, provided they contain an educational element. Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held in March, July and November. Those wishing to apply should obtain an application form by writing to The Administrator c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL or by emailing admin@bridgeeductionaltrust.org.uk. Applications by post or email should be received not later than the 15th of the month before the meeting at which they are to be considered. Further details of the Trust can be found at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local Trustees, please contact one of the following: Rev Tony Monds (348211), Rex Goddard (348363), Sue Nicholas (348436), Hannah Murphy (348564), Richard Drewe (348253), Nick Harland (348272) August 4 Mon 8 Fri 9 Sat 16 Sat 17 18 23 23 30 Sun Mon Sat Sat Sat Summer Concert All Saints Church, Piddletrenthide 7.30 pm Plush Clay ShootPlush Cricket ground Cerne Sheep Group SW Deer Rescue Centre, 10 am – 4 pm visit Wayford, nr Crewkerne TA18 8QN Mobile Library AP, P’thide, P’ton various Cricket Tournament Plush Cricket Ground Coffee Morning P’thide Mem Hall 10.30 – 12 Concert Gwylim Simcock St Johns, Plush 7.30 pm Concerts: Guitar Recital St Johns, Plush 6 pm Goldberg Variations St Johns, Plush 7.30 pm P’hinton Church Fete The Old Rectory 2 – 5 pm Barbeque + live music The Old Rectory 7 pm Mobile Library AP, P’thide, P’ton various Lunch Club P’thide Mem Hall From 12 noon Summer Buffet Benefice Lammas Rawlsbury Camp, 11 am celebration nr Bulbarrow Gardens Club Poppybank, P’hinton From 12 noon Summer Social Lunch Parish Council Meeting P’thide Mem Hall 7.30 pm Mobile Library Coffee Morning The Prairie Dogs Gardens Club Summer Show Songs of Praise Mobile Library Coffee + Cake morning Concert: Live Junction Concert: Till Felner AP, P’thide, P’ton P’thide Mem Hall Buckland Newton Village Hall Piddle Valley 1st School various 10.30 – 12 noon 8 pm St Pancras, AP AP, P’thide, P’ton St Pancras Church, AP St Johns, Plush St Johns, Plush 6 pm various 10.30 – 12 noon 7.30 pm 7.30 pm Richard Drewe, Chairman 20 21 2 – 4 pm PIDDLETRENTHIDE POST OFFICE AND STORES THE VILLAGE SHOP We supply speciality breads from Evershot Bakeries (such as Cottage Loaves, French Sticks, large wholemeal cobbers) We receive fresh fruit and vegetable deliveries daily We stock in-season fruit and vegetables Our prices are very competitive Our free range chicken is supplied by Creedy Carver Balls the Butchers are happy to cut meat to individual customer’s requirements We have a range of boxed biscuits, sweets and chocolates, greeting cards, wrapping paper and much more - so why not come in and give us a try Shop Opening Monday – Friday 8.30 am – 7 pm, Saturday 8.30 am – 1 pm 25th August Bank Holiday Monday 8.30 am - 12 noon 26 29 August 8.30 am - 6 pm THE POST OFFICE COUNTER Post Office Services - Stamps, Parcels, Postal Orders, Gift Cards, Euros and other Currencies to order, PO Card Account and Pension and Benefits, PO Savings Accounts, ISA’s, Telephone and Broadband, Car, Travel, House, Pet Insurances, Moneygrams, Mortgages, Top Ups, Electric Key, Bill Payments eg electric, telephone, water rates, Council Tax, Income Tax. Cows and sheep are grazing on the Valley fields, crops are gaining in height, tractors are working all day (sometimes late into the evening) and cyclists and runners are very active on the roads. Despite the dry days, our lawns are growing apace so mowers are busy and there is, as ever, much to do in the garden. It is very sad to see The Piddle Inn deserted and closed and we hope that there will be a happy and vibrant business outcome for this important Valley landmark. We are in the middle of the fete, show and event season and while Alton Pancras enjoyed a damp but very successful and enjoyable day complete with celebrity openers, Piddlehinton Open Gardens was another tremendous success and there is more to come with Piddletrenthide and Piddlehinton fetes, the Gardens Club Summer Show and Plush Festival continues through to September with a varied programe of classical, jazz and contemporary music. This issue marks the centenary of The Great War. Local historian Bin Roy has researched those from the Valley who served and in subsequent issues we will be including details of those men who didn’t come home. A warm welcome to Julie Bennett who has joined the team as Assistant Editor and my thanks for her suggestions to introduce a Contents page and condense the advertising mainly to the beginning and end of the magazine. As ever though, PVNV relies on the community to contribute content, photographs (there are too many to include in this issue) and advertisements as well as feedback. Helier began his ministry among us some 30 years ago when he began training to become a Lay Reader (what is now know as a Licensed Lay Minister) when Stanley Royle was Rector of the benefice that then included the Three Churches. As the years went by, Helier felt God was making a different call on his life. That vocation was affirmed by the Church and, in 2000, he was ordained priest in Milton Abbey, in what was probably the first ordination to have taken place there since the Reformation. Two years later in 2002, the current benefice came into being as the Three Churches were joined with the Piddle Valley. Since then, Helier has been a popular figure on both ‘sides’ of the benefice and a regular traveller along Drakes Lane, the road that links the Three Churches with the Piddle Valley. During the vacancy in 2006, Helier played a key role in maintaining the worship, pastoral care and life of the comparatively new benefice as well as helping to co-ordinate the process for the recruitment of a new incumbent. In accordance with diocesan policy, all priests have to resign their licence on reaching the age of 70. Although Helier has not actually yet achieved that landmark, he will do so in the coming months and felt that the anniversary of his ordination at Petertide in 2000 would be a suitable time to resign his licence. He will, however, be accepting what is know as Permission to Officiate (PtO) which is a concessionary licence issued by the Bishop, usually to retired priests to allow them to continue to perform the duties of their calling within the diocese. So our loss as a benefice will be very much the gain of local benefices around us where Helier will be able to lead worship and to preach. The resigning of his licence is not really so much a retirement as a slight change of direction. But diocesan policy requires a clean break of at least twelve months between the end of a ministry under licence in this benefice and any further ministry with us under a PtO. Many of us will have good reason to be very grateful to Helier for his work among us as a leader of worship, preacher, pastor, counsellor, spiritual director, listening ear, teacher and administrator, let alone as a good friend. No doubt we shall continue to see him around since he and Judy will still be living in Hilton. Our warmest best wishes and prayers go with him for every blessing on his new ministry. Valley Rogation Sunday in Alton Pancras Alton Pancras hosted the Valley Rogation Sunday on the 25th May in glorious sunshine. We blessed farms, animals, gardens, homesteads and the countryside around us and as well as the able bodied on foot, for the less mobile of our parish, we had the benefit of a 4 x 4, proving that our countryside is accessible so anything is possible ! We hope that you will help swell the numbers for Piddlehinton who host Valley Rogation Sunday next year. By the way, there is no U in front of their pet’s name ! AP At No 3 we welcome gamekeeper Josh and Rosie; this poses an interesting problem, how do the former occupants’ homing pigeons know they have moved house ? AP A reluctant farewell to and from Pat Tomlin of Hillview bungalow who has finally succumbed to the travelling to and from her Poole hospital post. AP While Devon cancelled the last day of its County Show due to weather, AP bravely went ahead with its fete, rewarded with a surprisingly large attendance in the former vicarage/rectory, the home of the Dangerfields. Fresh from Downton Abbey, Lord and Lady Kitchener-Fellowes, alluded to the British attitude to the weather in their official opening speech and it was pleasing to see visitors struggling with some sizeable bargains and some very proud dog-owners leaving with first-time awards. AP The Coffee-and-Cake morning in St Pancras Church from 10.30 am -12 noon Saturday 23rd August gives visitors/residents a chance to snap-up some of the books that residents have recently been reading and view the historic pictures of the village as it once was. AP A northern trio of Ray, Barry and Colin have been tidying the area around the pond and waterfall, hoping it would again become a village feature, so were delighted when Rev Tony Monds and his followers included the site in the village Rogation service. AP “Thank-you for keeping this church and churchyard looking so cared for” is a typical comment in the visitors book, recently from Susan Brock nee Chalke, “26 years since Mum (Faith Chalke) died, 20 years since my brother Dave (of Barcombe Farm Cottages) and not forgetting Dad Gilbert (1987)”, while Ursula Pomeroy of the Dorset Historic Churches Trust wrote “beautiful Easter flowers”. AP The 1891 census may be the only time when AP’s ‘roads’ were actually named. The main street was recorded as Buckland Road, the lane containing the Old Post Office was Plush Road, and those who attended the village Fete travelled up the 1891 Cerne Road to the former vicarage. photo © Dr Sally Dangerfield 30 colinsuedean@btinternet.com 31 ACTIVITIES AT PIDDLEHINTON GYM ENTERPRISE PARK, PIDDLEHINTON New members always welcome Monday Evening Badminton from 8pm Contact Alan and Chris Wiseman on 01258 817512 Tuesday Afternoon Badminton 2pm – 4pm Contact Hilary French on 01305 848501 Tuesday Evening Badminton from 8pm Contact Pauline Adams on 01300 345459 Alton Pancras Annual Village Fete Downton came to Alton Pancras this year with the arrival of Oscar winner Julian Fellowes and his wife Emma Kitchener Fellowes to open the fete on a very dank May bank holiday weekend. The working group ensured that signs, tickets, publicity, gardens, refreshments available in the Village Hall and at Muston Manor and much more were in place. A real community spirit developed with people tidying, cleaning, cutting grass, painting and generally ensuring the village was welcoming for the expected visitors. Garden owners were heard mowing, sweeping, cutting back and generally tidying ready to share their gardens for the weekend with hoards of people. Four delightful scarecrows arrived to signal the run up to the weekend and inspired many more to appear. The two days proved to be very busy with more 550 people visiting the 22 than gardens. The car park in the Football Field, thanks to Jane Lovelace, filled up and ticket sales escalated and as the days warmed up so did the plant and ice cream sales. The scarecrow making and other children’s activities proved very popular with families and visitors were able to see moths trapped overnight including Elephant Hawk moths and Lilac Beauties. 46 different species were recorded on the Saturday and over 60 on the Sunday. Gay’s team of arrangers constructed beautiful floral displays for the celebration of Fathers’ Day in the church. Twelve lovely creations were made of different sports themes from fishing to croquet and from badminton to rugby. There was much wandering around gardens, smelling roses, asking for plant names, relaxing on benches, discussions about the beautiful views and ‘can we come back next time ?’ Thanks go to everyone from near and far who contributed to helping make this a memorable weekend, especially the garden owners, who worked tirelessly to ensure the most fantastic and diverse collection of gardens and without whom the event would never have happened. Thanks also to the scarecrow makers at the Piddle Valley School (in Claire’s activity workshop) and around the First village, which gave a special feel to the event. There are too many people to mention individually but a special thanks go to Cynth and Di and their team who served a very popular range of refreshments all day and where the donated mountain of cakes, scones and quiches were consumed at the Café Village Hall and also to Muston Manor for providing Cream Teas on both days. Happy smiles were everywhere and a good time was had by all. photos © Rosemary Agg 34 Rosemary Agg 35 Piddlehinton Fete at The Old Rectory The church fete is on Saturday 19th July at 2 pm. To commemorate the start of World War I this year, everyone is invited to come in period dress - children and adults alike. John Hudson is going to lead the singing with old songs during which (or shortly after), there will be judging to find the most appropriately dressed person (child and grown up categories). After which the children are also going to have some sports. Bring along your scarecrows - they too are being judged. The BBQ in the evening won't just be roast pork - there will be sausages, burgers, salads and all those special Piddlehinton puds as well ! Would you be able to help on Friday evening when we get the tents, tables and chairs, etc ? We also need help to move tables and chairs before the BBQ and to clear up on Sunday morning. Yes indeed Piddletrenthide is now an official “Hedgehog Village”, in fact, it is the first village in the country to be recognised as such. The concept of Hedgehog towns and villages is part of a campaign led by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. The Dorset Mammal Group has taken on the responsibility for initiating the scheme throughout Dorset. Bridport is now a Hedgehog Town and other towns and villages throughout the county are starting to get on board. Piddletrenthide already has over a dozen Hedgehog Friends who are in the process of making their gardens hedgehog friendly, making a note of hedgehog sightings and recording these on the website www.hedgehogstreet.org. None of these activities need take up very much time, and provide a real opportunity for children and adults alike to preserve the habitat of this delightful little animal whose numbers are in serious decline. I would like to thank him for all the work he has achieved over the last 18 months, since the inception of the group, to bring us to where we are now. He proposed that the chairmanship should rotate every six months, so his has been a sterling effort. John steps down having guided us to a point where our research and ideas are forming nascent policies. These policies, based on the feedback you’ve already given us are outlined in the following pages. We have identified a need for smaller homes, both for those who want to buy their first homes and those looking to downsize. Do you think these should be built, and if so, where ? photo © Neil Herbert I think it worth reiterating that the Neighbourhood Plan is about the future. If accepted by you, and ratified by the inspectors, the policies within it will become the planning policies for the Valley for the next 15 years. 38 The Piddle Valley plan could include a policy that No public house should be given change of use into a residential property If that were so and the Plan were in place now, that would be the case. But we live in the present and the Piddle Inn has just ceased trading. If you want to keep the building as a pub, please come and talk to us at the fetes. As soon as more information is available, it is hoped a village meeting can be arranged open to the whole Valley, at which the community could make representations. Paul Johns Working Group Chairman telephone 01300 348154 email suevasha@aol.com / npchair@piddlevalley.info Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan Housing - both for open market and low cost for local people led by Malcolm Johnston mjz@btinternet.com / 01300 34869 The number of households who have close family or work ties with the Valley and are seeking accommodation (as identified from our survey and West Dorset District Council housing lists) totals 50. This is a high figure and greater than any other similar areas in the district, going to show how keen people are to stay in our beautiful valley and close to families. The number is higher than can be housed in the near future but does indicate the importance of more local (affordable) housing being built to meet demand over the next 15 years (the lifetime of the Neighbourhood Plan). It has also become apparent that there is a very large demand for small one and two bedroom dwellings, which could be provided by houses or flats. The Working Party will soon be debating housing targets over the period. A joint meeting held with the Environment, Landscape and Farming group demonstrated that we have both developed very similar approaches to the use of land and allowed us to endorse the sites identified for potential building. These are being shown on maps at the summer village fetes. Our policies for inclusion in the Neighbourhood Plan are crystallising and will include: • The need to develop opportunities for the building of local housing to allow local people to remain in the valley. • The need to protect the quality of the built environment and ensure there is no impact on the beauty of the valley. • Protection of designated green or wooded spaces within and around villages to maintain community resources and historic features. • The need to protect certain views as seen from public rights of way. • The drawing up of village boundaries to control growth. • Criteria for accommodating new housing within villages. • Identification of sites where houses may be built without damaging the character of the villages. • Support for conversion of historic or older buildings for housing where they have no other agricultural of community use. • Support for replacing existing large houses, or older housing, of poor design quality with modern eco friendly dwellings which make better use of the land available. • Criteria to assist in the design of new buildings being sympathetic to those around them. Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan Transport, traffic speed, footpaths, cycleways and communications led by Neil Herbert neilherbert45@yahoo.co.uk / 01300 348479 The Neighbourhood Plan will support new ways of managing traffic along the B3143 (the valley road) by : • Supporting local and strategic traffic management to reduce HGV vehicles through the Piddle Valley in order to minimise their adverse impact, whilst managing new development so that they do not have an uncceptable traffic impact on local residents. • Encouraging pedestrian and cyclist safety through lower traffic speeds and volumes. • Creation of an all weather surface to the existing bridleway from Piddlehinton to Piddletrenthide, with possible extension to Alton Pancras for use by cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders and disabled users. • Encourage the introduction of faster Broadband speeds to all Valley communities. Draft policies • Initiatives which promote improved traffic management by reducing traffic speeds and volumes; improve safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists in a way which respects the amenities of the neighbourhood. • Initiatives which improve local and strategic traffic management through routing of HGV traffic away from the valley roads will be supported. • Where appropriate, new initiatives will make provision for pedestrian and cycle access to the proposed all weather bridleway. • Pursuing the extension to Alton Pancras of the existing bridleway from Piddlehinton to Piddletrenthide. • Encouraging faster Broadband speeds to all communities in the Piddle Valley; all future developments should consider connectivity requirements at an early stage. Reasons for our policies Residents expressed concern regarding transport and traffic issues to the NP Working group at 2013 village fetes, in the 2012 Piddle Valley Parish Plan questionnaire and the 2013 Piddle Valley First School Travel Plan. The main issues were speeding traffic, the impact of HGV traffic along the valley road, risks to pedestrians and cyclist safety, so our traffic policies are designed to manage traffic, including that arising from new local development and to improve access to alternative forms of transport. As the community wishes to encourage cycling and walking as safe options, the NP aims to improve highway safety, minimise conflicts between road traffic, cyclists and pedestrians through the creation of the all weather bridleway. HGV vehicles pass daily through the Piddle Valley (in connection with farming); we seek to minimise those heavy movements not connected to local businesses. Good telecommunications is increasingly important in the modern world, so Broadband is even more important in our isolated rural area. Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan Environment, landscape and farming led by Peter Chance peter_chance@btinternet.com / 01300 348311 The following aspects are a brief description of our policy areas : • Protect and enhance the environment of the Piddle Valley. • Protect the higher landscapes and fine long distant views. • Develop a policy to manage the Valley woodland in order to enhance it’s contribution to the landscape. • Improve protection of the Sites of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCIs). • Ensure a high standard of management and effective Rights of Way signposting. • Minimise light pollution – Enterprise Park, etc. • Encourage re-use of redundant farm buildings for housing and small businesses. • Contain new housing within the existing boundaries of the five communities. • Ensure high standards of design and materials for all development. • Designate green open spaces within each community. • Ensure farm building developments minimise environmental impact and take advantage of improved design and new, more sensitive materials. If the above does not include aspects which you feel are important or wish to raise any other points, please do be in touch. With the closing of the Piddle Inn I have had to rethink my plans, and have decided to wait until the 2014-2015 season starts and, if the Piddle Inn has re-opened, and the new owner is agreeable, we will continue as before, ie start the season with the same members as last season and use the money held by me as prize money. After that we will start again as usual. If the Piddle Inn remains closed, or if a new owner does not want the competition to be held there, I will disperse the money held by me to the members who were paid up at the time of the closure of the pub. Though this much needed work might have been unwelcome to some, the spring rains have quickly encouraged new growth and come the winter weather, the build up of water will not continue to flood the road, but can disperse naturally giving us an added bonus of less potholes appearing ! Our thanks to Dick Hiscock and his team. Dot Browning 44 45 General News + Notices ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Piddle Valley Community Speed Watch Update Most of you will no doubt have seen volunteers from the Piddle Valley Community Speed Watch team in their distinctive yellow hi-viz jackets operating speed check equipment in the valley. The scheme has been operating for a period of eleven weeks, and in that time some 3,300 vehicle movements have been recorded with over 200 drivers noted as exceeding the threshold speed limit. The group was formed due to concern expressed by residents about speeding traffic on the valley road, its primary objective is to educate drivers to drive within the 30 mph speed limit in our villages, and it is currently operating in Piddlehinton, Piddletrenthide, Alton Pancras, Buckland Newton and Duntish. From feedback received from local residents, there appears to be a general perception that traffic is slowing down on the valley road, due to the presence of the CSW. The Piddle Valley Book of Country Life In November 1980, The Times described The Piddle Valley Book of Country Life, edited and compiled by Muriel Pike and published by Hutchinson and Co. as 'the best book of the countryside' published that year. In 2002, I produced a softback reprint of Muriel's book including an extra chapter entitled Piddletrenthide's Sacrifices, written by Bin Roy and illustrated by John Wilson, tracing the experiences of the 18 men commemorated on bronze plaques on the front wall of the Memorial Hall. These books were sold, originally at a cover-price of £10, later reduced to £5 to raise money for the three churches of the Piddle Valley as Muriel had wished. For more information visit the Dorset Police Community Speed Watch website:- As sales have slowed to almost nil now, I have about 70 copies left which I would like to dispose of; I suggest that the original price may be ignored now and copies handed out in exchange for donations. Another idea would be that the remaining copies could be handed over to the school for a small sum, possibly £1 per copy, and given to the older pupils as a souvenir of the Piddle Valley on the day they leave. I think Muriel would have approved of this idea. At the moment they are sitting in my study, taking up space and earning no money for the church at all ! http://www.dorset.police.uk/Default.aspx?page=6983 If anybody has a better idea, perhaps they could let me know. If you are willing to join this initiative, please contact Dorchester East Safer Neighbourhood Team, telephone 101. These donations were all extremely gratefully received by nearly 500 cyclists who came through our Pit Stop at Ilminster Ambulance station making the 54 mile sponsored ride on what was a very warm day. Many of them asked where all of the “goodies” had come from and after we had told them of the appeal they asked if we would pass on their very grateful thanks to everyone which we are delighted to do. The latest figure we had so far was that £40,000 had been raised but the final total will not be known for a while as money is still being received. Rosalyn Charlton National Gardens Scheme Open Days in the Piddle Valley Ivy House Garden, Piddletrenthide As we pack away the integral components of 'opening' our garden for 2014, we naturally reflect on the highs and lows of the season. Our entry in the NGS Yellow Book describes our garden as 'wildlife friendly'; this year that came to have a new meaning. A few days after a meeting designating Piddletrenthide as Dorset's first Hedgehog Village, we were greeted by signs of destruction in one of our greenhouses and blamed neighbourhood cats for overturned flowerpots, trampled plants and general mayhem. On further inspection, we discovered first one and later two hedgehogs snoozing peacefully under the staging, in broad daylight. One seemingly camera-shy had its head tucked inside a flowerpot ! Evidently the previous night's plummeting temperatures, when the greenhouse had been closed up, had caused the hedgehogs to become trapped inside. But these were not our only surprise visitors: on our final 'opening' at the beginning of May we were alerted to two swarms of bees hanging out along the footpath at the top of our garden. Unabashed, Meli Fowler and I donned our bee-suits, scaled the heights clutching our skeps and caught the escapees amid the flashing of cameras and amusement of our human visitors..... We would like to thank our varied visitors for their appearance this year and also our band of helpers: John and Jane Preston, Liz Messer, Mary Foulds and Ros Charlton who helped us forward £1400 to the NGS. See you all again next year! photo © Bridget Bowen Dave + Bridget Bowen / 01300 348255 48 Butts Cottage Garden, Plush We decided to try two whole weekend openings this year as well as a single day in April, working on the theory that a wet Saturday might well be followed by a fine Sunday with no more work needing to be done apart from begging more cakes off helpers and friends, so we achieved five Open Days in all, raising £1140 for 10 charities, including Macmillan Cancer Care, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices and others. Many of our visitors remarked on the peace and tranquillity of our garden, its beautiful setting and even (to our surprise) the excitement of driving up the attractive, winding, hilly road to Plush and they really appreciated the lovely tea and scrumptious cakes and kind attention of our 'tea teams'. We could not even contemplate opening the garden without the help of Richard, our car-parker, who only asks for a slice of coffee-cake and mug of tea as reward for use of the paddock and of course all those volunteers who sell tickets, make cakes, serve the teas, sell plants and chat to the visitors, too many to mention but a HUGE 'thankyou' to them, we are really grateful. The main area that the thieves appear to have been working is between Wool and Dorchester but we are now seeing crimes reported in other parts of the area. Many people underestimate the value of items they store in their sheds; unfortunately criminals are fully aware of the value of the goods that some people store in vulnerable places. The following advice can help to keep your property secure and reduce the chance of you becoming a victim of crime. 49 Whilst a shed is not designed to withstand any form of determined attack, there are some simple measures you can take to make them more secure. Position your garden shed as near to your house as possible so that it is clearly visible from your home. Consider painting your house number and postcode onto valuable gardening equipment (lawnmower, strimmer and tools etc). This makes them much less attractive to potential thieves; it makes them more difficult to sell on and also increases the chances of the property being recovered and returned to its rightful owner if it is stolen. Avoid storing valuable items such as power tools, fishing tackle or golf clubs in a shed; these items should be stored inside your home or a secure garage. If you have been working in your garden, ensure that you lock away tools such as spades or forks when you’re finished. Tools left out overnight could be used by an intruder to gain access to your property. If you don’t intend to use the windows in your shed, make them secure by screwing them shut or fitting window locks. Hanging old curtain or netting up against the window will prevent prying eyes from seeing what is stored in your shed. For further advice and information please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods team by dialling 101 or visit www.dorset.police.uk monitoring farm animal movements, and from administering our Buy with Confidence approved trader scheme to providing free advice to businesses, I know there are still a lot of different days to come ! Ask my Dad (who prosecuted for Trading Standards when he was a council solicitor) and he would say it means ‘back in the day’, when Trading Standards officers checked the quantity of goods sold, from coal to beer, from bread to petrol, because the oldest form of consumer protection is the accurate use of weights and measures. As a worker at a convenience store for many years the answer for me was simple ‘they enforce fair trading laws and conduct underage sales test purchases’. It is only now I have recently crossed the divide to work with Trading Standards that the true breadth of what they do has become clear to me. Yes, it is true that we do enforce retail law and yes, we still carry out the weights and measures duties of our historic origins, but that only scratches the surface. In the short time I have been with the Service I have spent time assisting vulnerable victims of scams, on animal health welfare and checking the safety of petrol stations. This is on top of the day to day consumer complaints referred to us from the Citizens Advice Helpline, which may require further investigation or may contain details of a vulnerable consumer who needs more in depth help and support. It’s fair to say I was surprised; one day I was clad in a luminous yellow jacket helping officers check the safety of a petrol station, the next I was walking around a field looking for signs of fly strike in sheep. In the few weeks since I started this job it has thrown up something different each day. So from stopping rogue traders to ensuring food standards, from testing product safety to Architectural Plants and Foliage - Philip Gamble Hopefully your PVNV will have arrived in time for you to read this before 7.30 pm on Monday 30th June, when Philip Gamble’s talk will be held at Piddlehinton Village Hall. Philip is a philosophical garden adviser, based in Lyme Regis, with 33 years experience in professional horticulture. He runs his own gardening courses and offers gardeners his ‘experienced calm’; to learn more see his website www.gardenreassurance.com. 50 April talk - Rosemary Legrand At end of April we had a fascinating talk by Rosemary Legrand, a retired nursery owner whose father was a leading rhododendron hybridiser. Rosemary has travelled worldwide looking for plants and enthralled us with her account of her botanising visit to Bhutan, where she eventually saw her favourite rhododendron growing in the wild, high on a roadside cliff. The photograph that drew a ‘wow’ from the audience was the sight of a meadow awash with the delicate mauve drumstick flowerheads of Primula denticula, in just the way that cowslips carpeted fields here a hundred years ago. Her tale included interesting insights into the culture and people of this remote country. She is a frequent speaker on cruise holidays and to larger groups than ours, but said that she enjoyed our engaged audience. We are pleased to have booked her for another talk in Autumn 2015, so keep an eye out for that treat next year ! 51 May talk - David Usher This talk by David Usher, ex-head gardener at Hestercombe, entitled ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’, explored the history of garden design in England. He illustrated the origins of many familiar garden features and the final ‘Something Blue’ brought us bang up-to-date with a modern sculpture installed at Hestercombe some years ago. This was particularly appropriate because a Contemporary Art Gallery was opened in Hestercombe House in May this year, which is included in the garden admission ticket. Note there are no Garden Club talks in July or August. Ros Charlton, Secretary / 01300 348063 Piddle Valley Over 60s Jean Curtis and Margaret Paul have made a patchwork quilt that they have kindly donated to the Piddle Valley Over 60s to be raffled to raise money for the club. Tickets will be available to all and can be bought from any committee member. The draw will be made at the Coffee Morning on 4th October. Our Secretary Bridget Rennison and Teasurer Hilary French received a cheque from Waitrose for club funds as a result of partcipation in the monthly promotion that Waitrose carry out for local comunity activities. Our thanks to Waitrose and all those who helped by voting for us with their tokens. Hilary French / 01300 848501 Piddle Valley Players We would like to thank Heather Bland for her organisation, and the audiences for supporting this years raffle during our production of ‘Allo ‘Allo. It was wonderful to see Sally Dangerfield in her French peasant costume weaving in and out of the tables in our French restaurant selling tickets. Thank you Sally. We are donating £270.00 to be divided equally between Ducks and Drakes Cancer Care Trust and The Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall . The Piddle Valley Players would love to meet you ! Rehearsals start on Thursday the 4th September at Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall at 7 pm for this years production, Sandy Wilson’s Musical ‘ Divorce me Darling’. Come and join us for the Winter and keep warm with friendship, flipping hard work and very nice biscuits at coffee time ! We are looking for new players under 35 years old in particular for this show, so go on give it a go ! Anyone wishing to join the Players, please do contact Rachel Olley / 01300 348758 / theoldtackroom@btinternet.com 52 The Twinning Association 21st Anniversary Visit 29 May - 1 June Twinned with Longueville, Normandy On the occasion of our 21st Anniversary, more than 30 members of the Twinning Association of Longueville, Normandy joined local members for a celebratory weekend; including a sizeable group of young children and parents, both British and French, which gives hope that the organisation can continue to develop for years to come. Our guests arrived to be greeted, as usual, at The Thimble in Piddlehinton. We are very grateful to the new landlords, Lisa and Mark, who have agreed to continue our long association with the pub (and who provided an excellent meal at this year's AGM). Greetings over (Gallic cheek-kissing can be a lengthy process on these occasions), guests were taken off to be entertained at the homes of their hosts. Friday was a day of visits around the locality: Cerne Abbas was popular, some visited Hardy's birthplace and others ventured further to the Russell-Coates Museum in Bournemouth. In the evening, we met for our traditional sporting fixture at The Halsey Arms, Pulham - a skittles match this time - which (helped by the immaculate double 9 score by our regular visitor Michel Vigot) the French won. Roger (Halsey Arms' landlord) laid on a superb carvery meal and provided a dramatic display for the children of his Harris hawk in flight, the children taking turns to "launch" the bird in the garden. Saturday's surprise was a visit to Wells and a guided tour (in French) of the beautiful Cathedral, arranged by secretary Jo Thornton who, as ever, orchestrated the entire visit with her meticulous planning, ably assisted by treasurer Terry Cowley. The Wells street market was in progress as we arrived and provided additional interest. In the evening we met in the Memorial Hall for our Gala Dinner prepared by Becky Green and her team. Aperitifs on the lawn (the weather was mercifully kind to us throughout the stay) was followed by the meal and the cabaret entertainment: our local team of brave men in vests and shorts performed a hilarious display of "dry" synchronised swimming. The French then stormed onto the stage and down the central aisle, dressed in Hawaiian outfits, to perform a lively song accompanied by exotic movements. Jean Quéré, the French "Président", and Dave Bowen (Association Chairman) offered mutual compliments and thanks for what everyone felt had been a very successful and enjoyable exchange visit. Finally Magdalena Atkinson sat at the piano and led some communal singing of French songs and to round things off, we rose to link hands in "Auld Lang Syne". Thanks to the many members who contributed so much to the success of the anniversary visit. photo Piddle Valley Synchronised Swimmers © Bernard Roughton Dave Bowen 53 Piddle Valley Parish Council ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coach House Unit 7 Enterprise Park, Dorchester, Dorset .DT2 7UA Tel: ( 01305 ) 261777 or 848982 Email : Les@coachhousetravel.co.uk Fax : ( 01305 ) 251668 Meetings The Piddle Valley Parish Council meets in Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall, normally on the last Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm. I wrote to the Chief Executive of Dorset County Council, Mrs Debbie Ward, on behalf of the Parish Council requesting a meeting including District Councillor Jacqui Cuff & County Councillor Jill Haynes so we could express our concerns over DCC’s planning application process, including the failure to have the promised village meeting, no notification or invitation to speak at the Planning Committee meeting for those including the Parish Council who had submitted comments, and especially regarding the appalling conduct of the Planning Committee meeting on 9th May 2014. This meeting was held on Thursday 12th June at County Hall. The Chief Executive informed us that after lengthy legal consideration, the planning approval decision in their opinion, was sound, at which point the grant of approval was issued on the 5th June. We had a very frank and open discussion and Mrs Ward agreed with many of our concerns, some of which were already being addressed. She indicated that after more investigation within the County Council she would write to the Parish Council with her outcomes. £289.50 £289.50 Four Fo ur nights nights Dinner Dinner Bed Bed & Breakfast Breakfast at at the the Sea Sea Front Front Clarence Clarence Hotel Hotel Tenby Tenby + excursions excursions 5D Day ay 29th July Meanwhile the District Councillor and myself have gathered all the relative documentation of the application(s) including the letters sent from members of the community describing their concerns regarding the Planning Committee meeting, so that a local QC, specialising in planning law, can ascertain whether there is a case for a judicial review. There may be serious cost implications and it may not be in our best interests to go ahead. As it stands the Temporary Travellers Transit Site will be operational from 7th July until 31st August this year. 55 New Waste Collection Arrangements General Waste & Food – Friday 4th + 18th July, 1st, 15th + 29th August. Recycling & Food – Friday 11th + 25th July, 8th + 22nd August Your containers should be put out by 7.30 am on Friday. Please try not to put your wheelie-bins out before Thursday evening and take them in again as soon as possible after collection on Friday. Piddlehinton children’s playground - dog waste Complaints have been received that the dustbin in the corner of the childrens playground is now being used for dog waste. While the Parish Council fully commends people bagging up their dog waste, can we please ask that it is NOT deposited in this dustbin. The children seem quite diligent in using it for their own rubbish while using the playground and we are sure you can appreciate both the discouragement to them and the risk to their health with the bin being filled with dog waste, even if bagged. The bin is private and so has to be emptied each week by a Parish Councillor and the contents taken home to be disposed of with their own private waste. Not a pleasant task, especially if the unfortunate Councillor happens not to be a pet owner either. Dorset Waste Partnership does not empty it as part of their collections. Would dog walkers please continue to bag up their pet’s waste, but also, please, take it home and dispose of it in your own bin. Byway Open to All Traffic - Planning Appeal There will be a public hearing by the Planning Inspectorate into the status of the bridleways/byways from Doles Ash Coppice to London Row and Snowdrop Corner. It will be held at Piddlehinton Village Hall on the 5th and 6th November 2014. If anyone wishes to speak at this hearing, please contact the Planning Inspectorate. A copy of the notification letter can be found at www.piddlevalley.info/pc.php in the Parish Council news Defibrulator The Parish Council is looking into the possibility of providing a portable defibrulator for use within the Valley, probably sited by Memorial Hall. The cost will be about £2700-£3000. If anyone is interested in contributing to, or sponsoring, this vital piece of life-saving kit, please contact your Parish Councillor to discuss. Buckland Newton have a similar piece of equipment and confirm that the arrangements for its possible use are very simple and clear. They also advise that it can take an ambulance up to 45 minutes to get to them in an emergency! 56 PLANNING APPLICATIONS Approved WD/D/14/000667 Whites Dairy House, Piddlehinton. Andy Howard / 01300 348406 57 The Great War~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Piddle Valley losses in the Great War This issue of News & Views coincides with the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War. When war was declared, men throughout the country rushed to enlist and the Piddle Valley was no exception. Each article will carry this silhouette of a British soldier taken from a bronze statue by the sculptor Albert Toft (1862-1949). This statue is on the Town War Memorial in Oldham, Lancashire and on the 41st Division Memorial at Flers on the Somme. Although neither memorial has any connection with our Valley, the image dramatically depicts a soldier’s determination. The silhouette was prepared by the late John Lambert of Piddletrenthide. Records do not show how many men from our parishes served. However, an idea of the enthusiasm at the beginning of the war can be gained from a story told by Bob Jesty who died in 1981 at the age of 93. Apparently 38 men from the Valley marched into Dorchester to sign on. There seems to be some truth in this. The regimental numbers of five of our men killed at Gallipoli in 1915 while serving in 5 th Dorsets are close together, suggesting that they could have enlisted on the same day. Other men would also have joined up voluntarily and more would have been called up when conscription was introduced in 1916. Inevitably, some did not return. Piddlehinton Cross, Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall and memorial plaques in the churches bear witness to the lives our villages lost. To commemorate these men, over the next four years obituaries will appear in News & Views to mark the centenaries of their deaths. The articles are not intended to be a history of the war but will be the stories of ordinary men who knew the villages, the woods and fields which are familiar to us today. Sources used for these articles were many. The official list ‘Soldiers Died in the Great War’ and Commonwealth War Graves Commission records gave basic information. Further details came from regimental histories and Unit war diaries together with records in the National Archives, the Imperial War Museum and the Dorset History Centre. The first loss was in November 1914 and his story will appear in the November / December issue.
