POST OFFICE AND STORES
NEWS FROM THE PO COUNTER
The Post Office continues to offer an even wider range of services and a
valuable new service for May is the facility for HSBC customers to withdraw
cash, pay in cash or cheques and check current account balances at the Post
Office here in Piddletrenthide. This service is in addition to that already offered
to Alliance Leicester, Post Office, Lloyds TSB and Barclays customers.
Each month the Post Office has a special promotion, often on foreign currency,
so look out for Notices attached to the glass surrounding the Post Office
Counter for details. A reminder of our most popular PO services is given
here – Stamps, Parcels, Postal Orders, Gift Cards, Euros and other Currencies
to order, PO Card Account and Pension and Benefits, PO Savings Accounts,
ISA’s, Telephone and Broadband, Car,Travel, House, Pet Insurances,

Who’s combating crime in your neighbourhood

As some of you may already be aware I will sadly be leaving Dorset Police on 31
May 2013. The happy reason for this is that I will be getting married and moving to
the USA. This is because my ‘husband to be’ is in the Royal Navy and has been
posted over there.
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to your new PCSO, Mark
Jones, who will be taking up the rural reigns. Mark has been a PCSO for 10 years in
rural Bridport and he comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge of village
community policing. I feel sure he will maintain the close community links that have
been forged with the local police in your village. I know that you will make Mark feel
just as welcome and part of the community as you have done with me. Yes, Mark
enjoys a cuppa and you could probably twist his arm for an occasional piece of cake
as you have done with me over the years!
We will be out and about introducing Mark to you over the next couple of months. I
would like to try and get around to see as many of you as possible before I go and
personally thank you for everything you have done to support your local Safer
Neighbourhood Team and Dorset Police during the last six and half years of my
service in your villages.
Thank you for an enjoyable six years where I have helped to look after 38 villages,
10,000 residents (not including their children, grandchildren, tourists, Tolpuddle
Festival go-ers!) Not forgetting all the farmers and their various livestock and a
multitude of small and diverse businesses across the 100 square miles of Dorchester
Rural East beat.

From the editor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hopefully, signs of Spring are a definite after the seemingly endless chill and
winds we have enjoyed since I last penned the introduction to PVNV. As I
write the sky is blue with some fast moving clouds, it is windy, the primroses
are waving, the magnolia and the fruit trees haven't lost their buds and bright
and verdant weeds are appearing – so perhaps Summer is on the way !
The Neighbourhood Plan is definitely moving forward. One hat I have
acquired is leading the Energy Focus Group where discussions have
highlighted a number of initiatives to explore further, including the potential
for a Piddle Valley community initiative to generate wood for fuel. We are
lucky to have a Woodland Trust Trustee on hand to help us navigate the
viability. I am delighted that Piddle Valley First School Head Tracy Jones is
keen to involve the children in an energy project so we will report further in
the next issue. It has been interesting to join the Housing group on a walk
around Piddletrenthide; the next is around Alton Pancras. It is a very good
way to learn about the Valley and for me to see where copies of PVNV get
delivered !
In this issue, we have the first instalment from a novice bee keeper, a very
moving poem, an update on the Neighbourhood Plan and lots of dates for
your diaries - a wonderful choice of concerts and fetes, and a reminder that
the cricket season has begun. So enjoy all that the long Spring and Summer
days offer and do keep sending in your reports and pictures.

News from the Vicarage ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Good Earth
This winter we have all had to put up with what seemed like endless rain that
flooded the fields and left the land saturated followed by a bitterly cold wind
that blew from Siberia for what seemed like weeks on end. Our farmers
have had to endure not just the physical discomfort of the weather but also
the problems of the grass not growing to feed their livestock and their arable
crops being damaged by the prolonged wet and cold. So Rogationtide this
year is even more significant than usual. It is the season when we ask for
God’s blessing on the land in particular but when we also pray for the world
of work, for our local communities and for our stewardship of all that God
gives us.
To mark Rogation this year, we shall have two processions, both on Sunday
the 5th May: one on each side of the benefice.
In the east, the Three Churches will meet at 10.30am at St Andrew’s,
Melcombe Horsey before setting off on tractors and trailers around the
countryside. The procession will end with a bring and share lunch back in St
Andrew’s churchyard (or, if cold or wet, in the church itself).
In the Piddle Valley, we shall meet at 10.00am in the yard at the end of Trent
Lane (off Cerne Hill) just on the opposite side of the river from the Piddle Inn.
James Boughey has kindly agreed that we may park cars in the yard before
we set off across the fields on foot.
During these processions, we shall not only enjoy each other’s company in the
beautiful countryside in which we are privileged to live but pause from time
to time to thank God for an aspect of it (animals, water, crops, homes, places
of work, schools etc) and to ask for God’s blessing on those aspects and on
ourselves.

the work done on our local farms.
Bless all who work with the world's resources
and enable them to be good stewards of your creation;
fulfil the farmer's hopes in a plentiful harvest;
feed your people with wholesome food;
and may town and country, united in gratitude to you,
be drawn nearer to the understanding
and true service of each other;

Funerals
The burial of Eva Elizabeth Foy of Yeovil (but
formerly of Piddletrenthide) took place at All Saints’,
Piddletrenthide on the 28th February 2013 following
a funeral elsewhere.
The burial of Ione Dorothy Banner of Piddletrenthide
took place at All Saints’, Piddletrenthide on the 11th
March 2013 followed by a service of thanksgiving
for her life.
The funeral of Muriel Heather Clarke of Melcombe
Bingham took place at All Saints’, Hilton on the 25th
March 2013 followed by burial.
Obituaries
Ione Dorothy Banner (1926 – 2013)
Ione’s story would make a good novel. Born in Karachi, the only child of
Rachel and Edwin Price, he highly educated and working in the cotton and
jute trade. Edwin died suddenly when Ione was only eight and mother and
daughter returned to England to a small place in Richmond near London.
Come the war, Ione and best-friend Wendy were evacuated to Australia.
While in Adelaide she met a young Australian fighter pilot called Tom Allen.
Back in post-war England, Wendy’s family introduced Ione to another airman,
Gordon Banner, a veteran of Bomber Command and later a test pilot
instructor at Farnborough. They married in 1951 and after his year at staff
college in Canada, the family settled in a large old house in Royston, gradually
filling the large number of rooms with four children, total now six,
supplemented by Ione’s mother Rachel. Ione even found a use for the
basement, founding a nursery school, still thriving in 2013. Later she became
headmistress of a local village school, with the subsequent family move to
Dorset ending her highly successful career.
When Gordon retired, he built a wooden sailing boat which he named Ione,
the Greek word for ‘sea-nymph’ and all the family enjoyed south coast
cruising. They also visited Australia where the two ex-pilots, Tom and Gordon
had experiences to share.
Sadly, both Gordon, and Tom’s wife Liz succumbed to cancer but it was
several years later before Ione and Tom met again and romance developed
through some legendary holidays, including her 80th birthday cruise to
Antarctica. In December 2012 she was diagnosed with cancer and the
cancellation of their booked trip to Alaska was a sad consequence. Her family
united in caring for her at home and there is some poignancy in the fact that
her last-ever outing was to see Fiddler On The Roof at the Memorial Hall in
March.

The fete season kicks off with the AP fete in the walled garden of the Manor,

Dangerfield. Their enthusiasm discovered a ‘new’ old gravestone on which
two of the words might be Willin Styckland. A William Stykelane, rector of
Melcombe Horsey, appears in AP records in 1376; it couldn’t be – could it?

The village Trust has published contact details of all residents who
agreed to be on the list, an important tool in passing information. It also
contains a sketch map of the locations and addresses of each house, vital in a
village without street numbers ! Copies are not/must not be distributed
beyond AP, for obvious reasons.

Vic Ralph’s family will have special reason to visit the National
Trust’s Coleshill House site this year. During WW2, Vic, then of Austral Farm,
volunteered to be trained as a local saboteur should an invasion take place,
along with father Gilbert, and Aubrey Waterman. On display at Coleshill is
one of the underground bunkers in which their ‘weapons’ were stored. AP’s
bunker was in Church Hill Wood.

Wightman, due to her long family connections with the Watermans’ of the
former Holcombe Farm.

Duo Isaria Concert - Saturday 8th June 7.30 pm
St. Mary's Church, Piddlehinton is the venue for a concert (part of a tour of
Southern England) by Munich DUO ISARIA performing works by Geminiani,
William Byrd, Biber and J S Bach. Rebekka Hartmann, one of Germany's
leading young violinists, already embarked on an international solistic career,
is accompanied by harpsichord partner, Caroline Bergius.
Rebekka studied in Munich and Los Angeles and is the winner of several
national and international prizes, including the Jascha Heifetz Scholarship
Prize, 2002. She has performed as a soloist with orchestras in Germany,
South Africa and China and in November 2012 gave her debut at the Berlin
Philharmonic hall with the violin concerto by Karl Amadeus Hartmann. Her
recently recorded CD „The Birth of the Violin“, (Naxos) with rare solo works

by Geminiani, Biber & Guillemain won the Echo Classic Award 2012 for the
best solo recording of the year. Rebekka Hartmann plays on an Antonio
Stradivarius from the year 1675.
Caroline Bergius is a native of Scotland and former student of Trinity College
of Music London; her post-graduate studies took her to the Musikhochschule
Munich and the Paris Conservatoire. She has given concerts and broadcasts
in UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. She specialises in chamber
music courses for young school age instrumentalists, in Germany and on the
Isle of Berneray, Outer Hebrides. In 2011 Caroline was awarded the Cross of
the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by the former
Bundespresident, Christian Wulff, for her services to youth and music.
Caroline Bergius performs on a double manual harpsichord made by Martin
Sassmann in 1984; it is a replica of an instrument created in 1639 by the
Flemish harpsichord maker, Andreas Ruckers.

Our first opening of the year [booked back in the balmy days of last August]
was an experiment to test the popularity of a mid-week opening. Considering
the inclement weather forecast on the day [heavy rain, cold and windy]
we didn't expect anyone to venture away from their fireside. But we were
pleasantly surprised when an early morning phone call alerted us to some
stalwart members of the Townswomens Guild who intended spending the
afternoon with us. They were joined by other family friends and several
holiday makers. Obviously Cabin Fever is strongly felt when we pass the
Spring Equinox !
With the tulips just showing colour in their buds and the daffodils, usually
finished by the back end of March, still unfurling their petals, what will be
blooming come May 6th, our last Spring opening of 2013 ? Come and find

Looking back to what I wrote for the last newsletter, I can see that hardly any
of my predictions came true. For our April opening we had no blossom,
tulips were only just breaking their buds and the marsh-orchids were still
invisible, keeping warm underground. Luckily there was a marvellous show of
daffodils, hellebores, primroses, a few frittiliaries and other early spring bulbs
and the camellias bloomed just in time. We're keeping our fingers crossed in
hopes for more seasonal weather for our next two openings. Come along
and support us, the tea and cakes are always superb and every penny we
make goes to support Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care,
Help the Hospices and several other smaller charities.

Plush is set to become Pollywood for four days from 7th – 10th May,
when a German film crew have booked the Brace of Pheasants to film a
sequence for a TV crime series, the ‘Inspector Jury Mysteries’. The Brace will
be closed for ‘Action’ from the Tuesday to Friday after the May Bank Holiday
and its rumoured that filming may venture on to the lanes as well. Just in
case a moment of fame has crossed your mind - no-one knows yet whether
local ‘extras’ will be called for !

The Bridge Educational Trust
The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was
established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which
founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century.
The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to
those wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational
establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the
Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should
be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger
children with special educational needs may be considered.
At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people
which are organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible,
provided they contain an educational element.
The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family
circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education,
course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to
older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other
purpose after normal education has been interrupted
Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held in February, June and
October.

Trading Standards
Most of us will have had to go out and buy a second hand
car at least once. It is probably fair to say that the majority
of us don’t know much about cars other than when they
go wrong it can be expensive, and a lot can go wrong.
Second hand car sales from dealers were the most
complained about purchase last year.
It can be tempting when searching for a new car to travel far and wide
looking for the right car at a bargain price, but what happens if that car goes
wrong? If the seller is in trade, the law generally regards it as reasonable that
he should be given the opportunity to fix the car. This may mean in practical
terms that you have to take the car back to him, which is going to be
inconvenient, particularly if he needs to hold onto it, and you are then left
without a car.

The majority of complaints involve civil (as opposed to criminal) issues, and it
is up to you and the trader to resolve them. A small percentage may relate to
safety, or not having been told the truth when you bought the car. For
example, being told that the car had done less miles than it actually had,
which is known as ‘car clocking’ to most of us. Trading Standards will
investigate where there is a breach of any criminal law.

Piddle Valley Gardens Spring Show
Despite being the coldest March on record since 1962 with persistent icy
easterly winds, over 140 entries for this year’s Spring Show in Piddletrenthide
Memorial Hall on the 6th April was a huge credit to those hardy souls of the
Piddle Valley who ensured the Show was a delightful reflection of what spring
has to offer, even in such challenging conditions. A big thank you should be
given to all exhibitors for their wonderful contributions.
Judge Bob Symes of Dorchester, with over 30 years experience of daffodil
growing, and 15 years of daffodil judging, thought the exhibits admirable
considering the predominantly cold preceding weather, and was full of praise
to all contributors for their efforts.
The photography section was judged by John Tilsley of Martinstown, who
was most impressed by the diverse nature of the photographs on show,
which were all based on “The Piddle Valley” and included landscape, portrait
and an open category.
The Challenge Cup, awarded for the highest number of
points gained in the show, was presented by
Chairperson Ann Jordan to David Downton, who also
won certificates for both his display of 3 vases of
daffodils and a photographic portrait of John Foot.
Second in the points total was Eric Groome, with John
Foot a close third. Certificates were also awarded to
Ann Millard for her stunning “Green and White Exhibit”
and Peter Chance for his mouth watering “Cooks Choice
basket”, which also secured Peter the “Best in Show”
award.

Home made cake and teas were enjoyed by the many visitors to the show in
the afternoon, and the event closed with the raffle, which had been very
kindly organised by Jean Groome.

Biscuits en route. The coach will leave Piddletrenthide at 10.00 am. The cost

The Club was formed 15 years ago; we make items for Dolls Houses, Shops
and Market stalls in 1/12th and 1/24th scale. Space within our homes is not

Twinning Association Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Twinned with Longueville, Normandy
Piddlehinton Twinning began as a twinkle in Ross McClean’s eye towards the
end of 1991 and in 1993, the link between Piddlehinton and Longueville in
Normandy became official.
20 years later, the whole Valley has reason to celebrate the anniversary of the
Twinning, with ‘Le Redoutable ‘, spectacular aquarium and a wonderful new
‘Titanic ‘ presentation guaranteed to take your breath away ! The beautiful
chateau de Balleroy and the rugged coastline between Cap de la Hague in the
north and Granville towards the south, including Europe’s smallest harbour
Port Racine, are also highly recommended as highlights of any visit to La
Manche.
In addition to this 20th anniversary visit from May 30th – June 2nd, the
Twinning welcomed 70 twinning enthusiasts from all over Dorset for the
Dorset Twinning Quiz in April and will be visiting the Furleigh Estate vineyard
near Bridport to taste their wines and learn about the wine-making process at
first hand.
Members from all four villages forming long-lasting friendships with families
from this little village near Granville (twinned with Sherborne). We meet our
friends from Normandy every year, either in the Piddle Valley or in France.
This year, a group of 24 adults and 6 children will be enjoying a weekend of
warm hospitality in French homes, with outings with French families to local
attractions such as Granville’s traditional Saturday market, the Christian Dior
House, the Old Town, harbour and aquarium, the Hermitage cider farm or
Mont St Michel across the bay.
There will also be a Magical Mystery Tour on a very
special day out and dinners with our host families, with
a chance to try the local specialities such as
‘moussettes‘ (spider crabs), locally produced cider and
calvados, ‘andouilles‘ (speciality sausages), mussels and
oysters raised in the bay and of course apple tart and
the famous Normandy cheeses.
Before departing again on the ‘Barfleur‘, our members will have time if they
wish, to visit the D Day landing beaches at Arromanches, the Bayeux Tapestry
or the Cite de la Mer in Cherbourg, with 60s submarine.

Piddle Valley Parish Council ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meetings
The Piddle Valley Parish Council meets in Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall,
normally on the last Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm. Meetings start with a
“Democratic half-hour”, during which any local resident may personally raise
direct to the Council any matter that affects the Valley community. So, if you
have something important to say, please either contact your local Parish
Councillor or raise it during the start of the next meeting.

Piddletrenthide Village Meeting
This will be held on the 21st May at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall. The new
Neighbourhood Plan, which is now in the process of being developed, gives
residents the ability to influence development within their village and will be a
major item on the agenda. Please do come along to the meeting to learn
more about this and to discuss any other matters relating to the village. All
are welcome.
Dog Exercising is again causing concerns in the community. The issue was
raised once more during the February Parish Council meeting, this time about
the state of the verges of London Road, Piddlehinton. This is a narrow road
with motor traffic and no pavement. Pedestrians therefore have to take to
the verges when traffic passes and are then having unfortunate encounters.
Would those people walking their dogs, not only here but also along any
road, track or path in the Valley, please take plastic bags with them and
remove their pet’s waste. Could we also remind that simply bagging it up and
leaving it hanging on a bush is NOT an acceptable alternative. It is very
unsightly to see fences and hedges festooned with these bags, as they do not
rot down and eventually they become a health hazard.
Warning to Vodafone customers
The Parish Council would like to draw to the attention of any users of
Vodafone mobile phones that there appears to be a risk of you unwittingly
incurring significant call charges.
Vodafone offer a traffic information service by calling 2222. This service is
charged at £1.50 per minute, but is not classed as a “Premium Rate” service,
so apparently cannot be blocked. From the number of complaints posted on
various on-line forums over the last 12 months or so, and from direct
experience, it appears that significant numbers of people are discovering they
have been billed charges of around £25.00 per call for at least two calls to
this number, which the user is convinced they have not made. Vodafone
apparently refuse to believe there is a problem, although they have reportedly
offered a refund of £5 to £10 on several occasions, if pushed. They claim
that if the user has not deliberately made the calls, then they believe it is
probably “phantom dialling” from an unlocked keypad while the phone is in
a pocket or handbag.

Work on our Neighbourhood Plan has been moving apace in the two months
since the last report. The January meeting of the volunteer working group
saw the setting up of five focus groups (each of five/six people, now growing) to look in more depth at the way we all live and how we can direct
change for the next ten or fifteen years. We see the Valley continuing to
remain a conserved environment. Many problems and difficulties will be
raised but they can be addressed in positive and imaginative ways, shaping
development with the means of achieving the highest priorities for
community benefit. The direction of the focus groups is becoming clearer so
this is a summary:

Beekeeping - A Beginner’s View
I’m not a beekeeper - yet. Last summer saw me learning the basics with the
Blandford and Sturminster Beekeeping Association and I’m hoping to get
some bees this year. But there’s lots to do first; in a moment of slight
madness I decided that I would make my own hives from scratch and with my
low level of woodworking skills and knowledge it’s been quite a challenge.
However it was a good excuse to ‘invest’ in some new toys, I mean tools, and
learn some new skills.
Beehives are traditionally made from western red cedar, a tough but
lightweight wood that can, in theory, last up to 30 years outside in all
weathers. The first challenge was to source some of this ‘super’ wood. It
took me a while to track some down in Honiton and my first shock as I’d
mistakenly thought I could save some money by making the hives myself !
How wrong I was! Still, it is lovely wood.
The next challenge was choosing the style of beehive. You wouldn’t believe
how many different designs there are to choose from! The internet provided
some basic instructions and to get my head around how it all went together I
drew up some scale drawings on the computer. That was months ago; it’s
April now and I’m still cutting and sawing. (See picture on inside front cover)
Cold weather doesn’t help as I’ve limited heating in my workshop and my
brain doesn’t work when it’s cold !
Why am I doing this ? I like honey but there’s only so much one can eat, and
I’m not doing it for the money. I’m just fascinated by bees. Their life cycle
from egg to adult worker, their ability to search out food sources up to three
or more miles from the hive, and to find their way back again, and then to
communicate what they have found and where it is to others workers by a
complex ‘wiggle dance’ – it is all endlessly fascinating. They live not as
individuals but as a colony of up to 50,000 bees, mostly female, but with only
one fertile egg laying queen. There’s so much to take on board and
understand, and then there’s beekeeping itself. Can I learn to manipulate the
colony to get the best out of it ? How much do I need to intervene to keep
them happy and healthy ? I have so much to learn.
My beginners’ training course last summer gave me a huge insight into the
whole subject. Each week I learnt a little more and the more I learnt I realised
how much I didn’t know ! Inspecting the hives looking for the queen, eggs
and larvae is a great pleasure. Week by week my confidence grows and I’m
sure once I get my own bees it will all begin to make real sense.
Ask any two beekeepers for their opinion on any bee subject and you’ll get at
least three answers !

No Regrets
There comes to all a moment of reckoning
When one should determinedly elect
To cease an inappropriate activity and so select,
As passing years are ever faster beckoning.
But rare for many is it yet
To walk away with no regret.
When RT, through hearing loss, became distorted
Gordon the joys of flight exchanged for gliding.
Happy hours did he in open skies spend sliding,
And skimming, riding thermals in which he disported –
Till RT for gliding was imposed.
He left it then, appearing quite composed.
I was the one who mourned it yet
He walked away with no regret.
‘Ione’ launched, the coast we sailed,
Though never managed to cross to France.
(We lacked the strength to take the chance)
But happy we were – then eyesight failed.
How to judge the ferry’s direction ?
How to read tide-table and chart ?
Time to give up. It broke my heart.
But Gordon remained quite cheerful yet.
Wind-surfing next did give us pleasure
Learning to sail and gybe and back
Through dinghied grandchildren we managed to tack.
Then strength gave out: past time to treasure.
The fun had left, our joy had passed.
Our joint activities were lessening fast.
Yet Gordon remained positive yet.
At the extraordinary age of sixty-five,
Gordon decided to learn to ski.
For ten years holidayed with family.
With sport, venue and friends, thrilled to be alive.
Then came Cancer’s icy grip.
Gordon had taken his final ski trip.
Grieved to give up but realistic yet
Hospital visits for wearying Xray

Convinced him, ‘Time I stopped driving.’
He accepted my help and with dignity, the arriving Nurses,
Macmillan and Marie Curie visiting day by day.
They gave him such loving care, with sympathy blending
That, to the last,
Gordon enjoyed their respect and compassion unending.
Finally slipping away, Gordon remained as yet
One who walks away with no regret.
As for me – as I observed his diminishing life,
I mourned in secret, silent tears in my heart.
Outwardly brave, I felt torn apart.
In my turn, will I follow, Gordon’s widow, not wife,
Bravely to give up my home, garden and car ?
I’m not sure my resolve will match his by far.
I’m afraid I lack courage to let go ….
And yet I should strive, just like him,
To walk away with no regret.

Plush Cricket Club
Despite all the wet and cold weather Plush CC have a full season of cricket
fixtures including Sunday friendlies, Sunday 3Counties League fixtures and
Evening League fixtures. The adults cricket starts on Sunday 28th April with an
interclub practice game then on 30th April. We begin our evening league
campaign with a cup match at Charlton Down and we have several events
planned :

Once again I am writing to keep you up to date with events at
Puddletown Surgery and impart important health messages. If there are

The surgery will be closed on Bank Holiday Mondays 6th and 27th May.

Introducing the new NHS 111 service in Dorset from March 2013
NHS 111 is a new service that's being introduced to make it easier
for you to access local NHS healthcare services.
You can call 111 when you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999
emergency. NHS 111 is a fast and easy way to get the right help,
whatever the time as NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day 365 days a
year. Calls are free from landline and mobile phones (although pay–asyou-go mobiles must have at least 1p credit).
When you call 111 a trained adviser will ask you questions to find out
what’s wrong, give you medical advice and direct you to someone who
can help you, like an out-of-hours doctor or a community nurse.
If they think your condition is more serious they will direct you to a
hospital or send an ambulance.
