MINI-TASKS During the 24h BEST Engineering Competitions, there’ll be some mini-tasks for both TD and CS teams. There’ll be a ranking list for each mini-task. The games will be played in the living room B120, following this schedule: 23h~00h: Liar’s dice session 02h~03h: 24 Game session 04h~06h: Singstar session 06h~07h: Jenga session To play these games you need to sign up in the store B221 before each session starts. Then the organization will inform you about the draw order. The overall results will be the sum of all the points obtained by each team in each minitask. During the competition, if you need some clarification about the Team Design task, please ask the TD responsibles: Rita Mendes – 927783892 Jorge Mateus – 916237150 / 926900179 …or ask a organizer for them. And the best team will win… - 50€ FNAC voucher!!! 1 24 GAME SINGLE DIGITS The game is played with doubled-side cards, each as a different combination of 4 digits (number 9 is filled in red to differ from number 6). The objective of the game is to think out how the numbers can be combined by adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing to yield the result of 24. Each card has one of three levels of difficulty: 1 Dot (easy); 2 Dots (medium); and 3 Dots (tough), this value is on the corner of the card. How to play 1. There are 4 players (from different teams in the competition) around a table with an organizer coordinating the game. 2. The coordinator places the card in play and counts the points of the players. He will put one card each round in game. 3. There is at least one solution to every card. The competitors must use all four numbers on the card but each only once. 4. The player who first touches the card with just one finger and gives the correct solution will add the card’s points (1, 2 or 3) to his/her current score. The player has 3 seconds to say the last operation (for example 4x6=24) and 12 seconds more to give the complete solution (for example 2 +2 = 4, 2x3 = 6, 4x6 = 24) 5. The player who won the card keeps it until the end of the game. 6. When all the 15 cards are played, the coordinator sums the cards values of each player. Special rules - When the players touch the card at the same time, wins the player who says the last operation first. - When players cannot find the solution of the card in play, it is removed. - Participants have to remain seated and silent during the game, so there is a higher concentration during the game. 2 - Participants aren’t allowed to use paper, calculators or writing materials. It’s foul when - The participant doesn’t answers within the allotted time; - The solution given is incorrect; - The participant touches the card with more than one finger. Once it is marked a foul, the card that was in play goes back to the deck of cards. With two fouls the participant is disqualified but keeps the points accumulated. Final classification In the end of the game, the points of each team element will be accumulated and added to their team’s score. The team with the most points earned in each category will be the first, and so on. Only the best 10 teams will earn points. When the conquistador Francisco Pizarro arrived in the New World in the 16th century, he vanquished the Incas, and brought many of their cultural developments to Spain. Among these was a game that, over the centuries, has evolved to become the exciting, bluffingintensive dice game we call liar's dice. This is one variant of liar’s dice game. This game is played with one set of six standard dice and a cup. Each player has three lives and is out of the game when he has lost them all. The winner is the final player with a life. How to play 1. The game is played by 10 persons from different teams in the competition, sitting around a table. 2. Each player rolls one dice and the player with the highest score will be the first to play. In a tie, they simply re-roll until one gets a higher score. 3. The first player rolls the 6 dice and makes a bid, for example, “three 3s”. He then offers the (usually hidden) dice to the player on his left. 4. The next player may choose to accept the dice, or he may challenge. If the bid is challenged, the dice are exposed and: - If the hand equals or betters the stated bid, the recipient loses a life and the dice pass to the player on the recipient's right who starts again. If the hand is worse than the bid then the player that made the bid loses a life and the recipient becomes the starting player. If he accepts the dice he looks at the dice, and chooses up to three dice to roll again and does it. He conceals the result from the rest of the table, and 4 makes a new bid. Subsequent bids must, again, be higher than previous ones: more of a kind is always better than less of a kind; higher numbers beat lower numbers; if there is a tie in the major part of the hand, evaluate the next most significant part of the hand. Examples: 111123 is better than 666555, because four 1s is better than three 6s and three 5s; 666432 is better than 555444, because three 6s is better than three 5s. 5. When a player loses three times (lives), is eliminated from the game. The winner is the final player with a life. The game is played with 48 wooden blocks, the length of each block is three times larger than the width, and each block is slightly smaller in height than in width. The blocks are stacked in a tower, whose floors are composed of three adjacent blocks along their sides with greater length; each floor is perpendicular to the previous. How to play 1. This game will be played by 6 team elements of different teams in the competition. The player who builds the tower play´s first. 2. A move consists of removing one and only one block off any height that is not the top level. The block removed should be placed horizontally in the top of the tower, so that a set of 3 removed blocks forms a new level. 3. Both hands can be used to withdraw a block but never simultaneously, ie, only one hand may be in contact with the tower at every given moment. The blocks can be touched to find a loose one that can be removed without dropping the tower. Any block that, when moved, threatens to topple the tower, should be left in the place from which it was taken, if the player gives up using it, the block can only be returned with the same hand that was going to be withdrawn. 4. The game ends when a block falls from the tower, except the block that is being removed. The player who brought down the tower is out of the game, and the 7 winner of a match is the one who makes the last recession without knocking the tower, the runner-up is the one who played before the winner, and so on. SingStar games require players to sing along with music in order to score points. Players interface with their console via SingStar microphones while a music video plays in the background. The pitch players are required to sing is displayed as horizontal grey bars, which function similar to a musical stave, with corresponding lyrics displayed at the bottom of the screen. The game analyses a player's pitch and compares it to the original track, with players scoring points based on how accurate their singing is. Rules Each team can only play one song, chosen from the available list of songs. When subscribing to this mini-task, they will have to choose which song they want to sing. Then, during the session, each team will have 1 microphone available to sing his song. The team elements have permission to chose who will sing during the song (they can sing all together simultaneously, for example). 9 Final classification The team classification will be based on Singstar score in the game: the team with the highest score will be ranked 1st, and so on.
