Keeping BONENT Members Informed
BONENT Recertification Requirements Changed from 45 to 40 Hours!
In response to policy changes in the field of Nephrology, the
BONENT Board of Directors voted to adjust BONENT recertification requirements by lowering the minimum number of contact
hours needed to recertify.
As of July 1, 2007 the minimum number of contact hours needed
to renew your BONENT certification changed from 45 to 40.

This pamphlet will explain the BONENT recertification process. You will need to accumulate forty-five (40) contact
hours throughout the four year period of your certification. This completed folder, along with copies of completion
and other required documentation reflecting contact hours, should be returned to the BONENT Executive Office
thirty (25) days prior to, or after your recertification date. Faxed recertification folders will not be accepted.
There is no fee to recertify as long as your BONENT annual membership fee is current.
The information submitted will be reviewed to determine if it is properly documented and whether it meets
BONENT recertification criteria. When this process is satisfactorily completed, certification for an additional four
years will be awarded and a wallet card will be issued to you.
NOTE: A $25 incomplete recertification fee is assessed to
individuals who do not submit completed documentation.

Since the last issue of Update, we have been in touch with the senator and the congressman
who introduced the Kidney Care Quality and Education Act of 2007 to add a clause for
dialysis technicians to maintain their certification. The bill has not yet been reintroduced
in the House or the Senate. We are closely monitoring the bill and will notify you of any
changes.
We have joined the Kidney Care Partners organization which is a group of dialysis professionals and suppliers whose vision is to improve the care of dialysis patients. This organization does have a lobbyist who will be looking out for the organization’s interest.
I recommend that each member call their senator or congressman and ask them to support
the Kidney Care Quality Education Act 2007 (S. 691 and H.R.1193).
Just like our politicians we have been at the forefront ensuring that dialysis professionals
are educated and trained to perform their jobs. We have worked with colleges here in the
United States and Canada reviewing their curriculums, making sure that they are current and
adhering to industry standards. Currently there are over fifteen programs that are BONENT
approved and they are listed on our web site. Please visit our web site for further details.

I would like to thank you for the assistance you have provided to me throughout this exam
process. You have made this process as easy as possible and I am very grateful for that.
Thank you.

I would like to thank the membership director Laikisha Jeffries for her time and support in
helping me out to complete my recertification requirements. I’m very glad to have received
my new Bonent ID. I really appreciate her patience and time in communicating with me to
sort out the problem I’ve encountered. More power and success to BONENT. And I’m truly
proud to be a member of this organization!
Angelyn G. Aquino, RN, CHN

(BONENT Story) Today, I received a package from Laura Stiewe (formerly Laura Clayton). It was a “Thank You” gift for helping her in April! Laura is a former BONENT
member who is now in the field of massage therapy but before she could receive her message therapy license in Washington state, she needed a letter confirming that she was BONENT certified through 1999. I mailed the letter to the department of health on her behalf
and she was able to get her massage license. What a great way to end the week!

BOARD MEMBER PROFILE INTERVIEW
Carol Johnson,
RNC, MSN, CS, FNP
the educational opportunities, networking and certification.
1.What is your current professional position and the
name/city/state of your facility?
I am a registered nurse and a family nurse practitioner. I work
for Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn New York as an
assistant nursing care coordinator. My area of specialization is
nephrology and emergency care. As a Nurse practitioner, I work
in family practice specializing in hypertension and diabetes care
with a focus on preventing complications relating to these illnesses such as kidney disease.
2.What is your background experience?
I was trained at the University Hospital of the West Indies and
graduated with a diploma in nursing. I went on to pursue my
bachelors and masters degree from the College of New Rochelle in New York. I graduated Magna cum laude and made the
national deans list. I have held certifications in all areas that I
have practiced e.g. Medical surgical nursing and home care. I am
currently pursuing my PHD in health care administration and will
be finished in the next few months.
3.What led you to this as a profession?
I went to nursing school right out of high school because there
was a shortage of nurses at the time. I thought that this was a
profession that I could be of service to suffering humanity.
4.In what ways has membership in BONENT benefited you?
I have expanded my knowledge and sharpened my skills, through
5.What do you see as the biggest
challenge facing the Dialysis field?
The biggest challenge is research.
There has to be emerging data adding
to the body of knowledge, which
promotes and protects our practice.
6.How have you, personally, kept Carol Johnson
up with changes in the field?
Vice President &
I have to keep up with current trends
Update Editor
by constantly reading and networking
and attending conferences at least every two months.
7.Do you enjoy any hobbies?
I enjoy traveling and photography. I have traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East enjoying the ruins. 8.As a BONENT Legislative committee member, what
significant legislation changes do you see in the near future?
I think that it will be required that all nurses be certified in their
area of practice.
9.Are there any words of wisdom that you wish to share with fellow members?
Become certified in your area of practice, this is the first step to
success and you will gain the respect and trust of your colleagues
as an expert in your field of practice.
Consider Becoming a BONENT Exam Proctor!
Each year, BONENT schedules exams
across the United States and abroad. We
need your help to keep the momentum going. We need volunteers to proctor exams
and help increase BONENT’s presence in
your area.
BONENT Certification Examinations may
be offered at various locations throughout
the United States as well as worldwide,
upon request. The exam can be administered
anywhere, any time five qualified people
wish to convene for an examination.
Exam candidates may be a combination
of Hemodialysis Technologists/Technicians, Hemodialysis Nurses and Peritoneal
Dialysis Nurses.
BONENT encourages certification;
therefore, proctors are required to be a
BONENT-certified nurse or technologist/
technician, a physician, a dietitian, or a renal social worker. These requirements are
necessary to prevent any breach of security
of the BONENT examination process.
Please visit the BONENT website at http://
www.bonent.org/host_sites/proctors or
contact the BONENT Executive Office for
more information on proctor requirements,
responsibilities and sign-up forms.
Once you decide to become a BONENT
proctor, your facility may want to host an
exam.
Being a host facility affords numerous
benefits to your institution:
• Ensures quality care for kidney patients through the development of highly Send Us Your Essay for the
