Department of Nephrology and Hypertension
Cleveland Clinic Nephrology Alumni Newsletter Fall 2015 From the Chair…… The Nephrology division continues to grow and do well. This year, we maintained our # 2 national ranking in Nephrology as measured by the US News and World Report. The department has twenty (20) full time faculty, four (4) emeritus consultants, and one part time faculty. We train four fellows each year, and the program has filled each year with residents from across the country. Most importantly, all fellows have passed their boards on completion of the training program. This year we have added a one year Transplant Fellowship under the direction of Brian Stephany. We also train international fellows in both clinical and research fellowships. The department is involved in national and international studies including SPRINT and CRIC. George Thomas, MD has assumed the directorship of the Hypertension Section, taking over the reins since Marc Pohl, MD retired last year. The Transplant program continues to be quite busy. On an average, Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF) does 160 kidney transplants/year. CCF Florida is now doing a significant number of kidney and other transplants as well. The Nephrology department maintains a joint venture with Metro Health Medical Center and Fresenius Medical Services for our dialysis centers. We have nine (9) dialysis units in the Greater Cleveland Area. The Home Dialysis program has over 100 patients. Three Endowed Chairs are held in the Nephrology Department: the Ray Gifford Chair in Hypertension, which is currently held by Marc Pohl; the Glickman Chair in transplant held by Emilio Poggio, and the Eugene Schwindler Chair in Research held by Michael Lioudis Remember, that the American Society of Nephrology Dinner for CCF Alumni is Friday, November 6 at 7 pm at McCormick and Schmidt’s at 675 L Street in San Diego. Please call or email us at if you are going to the dinner. Hope to see you all at the ASN. Bob, Heyka, MD Chair, Division of Hypertension and Nephrology Phil Hall, MD, is spending most of his time now at the Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, where he advises medical students. Phil, as most of fellows in Nephrology know, spent his entire career as a teacher and clinician at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He has been the Program Director in Nephrology from 1985‐89, and the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency from 1978‐83 and 1989‐1994. He has been voted the outstanding teacher in Medicine in 1974, 1976, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1992 and 1994; he was voted the outstanding Nephrology teacher in 1974, 1975, and 1977. He was voted the Basic Science Teacher Award at the Lerner School of Medicine in 2005, and Master Teacher Award of the Board of Governors in 2001. He gave the Graduation Address at the conclusion of the first graduating class of the medical school. Phil was the director of Renal Block for Medical students in Year 1 and 2 from 2004 until this past year. He developed the curriculum for the medical students in the area of renal physiology and disease. He also helped to develop the “portfolio system” for evaluation of the medical students as the curriculum was developed in 2004. He is now an adviser for 4‐5 medical students through there five year training program. He and his wife, four children and eight grandchildren have family time at their cottage in Ontario every year. He does woodworking with his wife, and builds doll houses; he has ten (10) in his own house for his grandchildren. What he misses most now is the camaraderie of his colleagues that he developed over the years at the Cleveland Clinic and his interesting patients that he followed for so many years. Over the years, Phil has been a Member of the Board of Governors from 1997‐2001, a member of the Board of Trustees from 1985‐86, Vice Chairman of the Medical Staff from 184‐85, Secretary of the Medical Staff from 1983‐84, and an active member of the medical staff from 1972‐2001. He is the author or co‐author of 55 papers, and has been involved in writing four chapters in books involving kidney disease. The Alumni Board of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF) has awarded Phil the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1997. This award is given to an alumnus who has distinguished himself/herself at either Cleveland Clinic or at another medical facility. Phil was voted this award unanimously by the committee. Most of the fellows who have trained at CCF know Phil and have always considered him the outstanding teacher in the department. Editor: James W.
