We have a strange situation this year. Most of the
time we ask, "are the holidays late or early this
year?" It seems that this year they are right on
time! Children will have already begun the school
year, the leaves on the trees will have started to turn,
and the evenings will bring with them a bit of a chill in
the air. It seems that this year, for once, Rosh HaShanah will be exactly on time.

One of the great Jewish thinkers of the early part of
the 20th century was a man named Franz Rosenzweig. This was during a time when many Jews
considered becoming Christian. For some, it enabled

to Jews. For others, it meant greater economic opportunities. Yet for Rosenzweig it was a matter of personal commitment. A number of his cousins and friends
had become Christian. One friend in particular, Eugen
Rosenstock-Huessy, had an ongoing correspondence
with Rosenzweig in which they discussed religious issues. Rosenstock-Huessy was born to an assimilated
Jewish family in Berlin and had converted to Christianity in early adulthood. In 1913, he challenged Rosenzweig to consider becoming a Christian. Rosenzweig
told his friend that he could only enter Christianity as
a Jew, and therefore he would spend the coming High
Holidays at synagogue, after which he would convert
to Christianity.

The Songs of Selichot
Just as the Selichot liturgy serves as a prelude to the
High Holiday season, so does the music serve as an
overture to the musical riches of the solemn season
about to begin. The musical mode is a somber one
but particularly moving to Jewish hearts. Technically, it is an amalgam of several Western minor scales
and is knows to synagogue musicians as the Penitential Mode. Its use is not restricted to this service or
to the High Holiday season. It can also be heard in
more simple form at the daily service and at certain
moments on Shabbatot and festivals.
While the Selichot service is essentially a personal
one, the needs of the people Israel are never forgotten and the service closes with a prayer for the
redemption of Israel, “Shomer Yisrael.”

the book of life for a year of health, happiness and
peace.
Just as an overture presents snatches from the music
of the opera about the being, so the Selichot service
presents highlights of the most moving sections of
the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur liturgies. The
beautiful, majestic and inspiring Kaddish of the Days
of Awe is heard for the first time since the previous
Yom Kippur. The piyutim, the sacred poetry of the
Selichot service, are particularly suited to the musical
ornamentation since they were originally written to
be sung. Many of the payyetanim were, themselves,
hazzanim. Since these poems are not part of the
“matbeah shel tefillah” (the coin of prayer—those
prayers which are specifically required for each service), the musical modes vary widely, offering a rich
collection of tunes and chants. The moving “Sh’ma
Koleinu” prayer is heard again in its plaintive plea for
God’s attention, as is the major congregational confession, the alphabetic acrostic beginning “Ashamnu,
bagadnu, gazalnu…”
Strangely enough, this soul-bearing confessional is
sung, not in a sad minor, but rather in a brilliant
major mode. When pressed for an explanation, one
scholar explained that Jews are so confident of God’s
mercy and justice that they confess readily, openly
and without fear.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

While you are reading this just before Labor Day, I’m
writing this on August 12, the evening of the Perseid
meteor shower. I’ll be looking up at the heavens late
this evening, and will be thankful that we have a near
new moon, clear skies, and a beautiful night. I knew
it would be a near-moonless night because on Shabbat we announced that Rosh Chodesh Elul would
start Friday night. Rosh Chodesh, the beginning of a
month, always begins on a new moon. And, of
course, the start of Elul that means that Rosh Hashanah is just a month away.
Jewish holidays are nearly always “early” or “late,” so
goes the joke. This year, however, they seem right
on time. The Jewish calendar is a blend of solar years
and lunar months, using a leap month and, less
known, and a couple of months can also have an extra day or be short one day. Leap years on our calendar add a 30-day extra month of Adar seven times
every 19 years. Our sages codified our calendar almost 1000 years ago, with complex rules to keep all
of our holidays aligned. While the holidays move
back and forth, they are always in the right season.
On our secular calendar, holidays either fall on a specific day of the week (like Labor Day) or on a specific
date, like July 4th, and they can fall any day of the
week. On the Jewish calendar, there is more of a
rhythm and more reason for when holidays occur. If
you’ve ever noticed that Yom Kippur falls on Saturday
or Monday more often than it seems that it should,
you are right. It can’t fall on a Friday or Sunday, as
we would either not be able to prepare for Shabbat
or prepare for the fast on Yom Kippur if it did. And it
never falls on Tuesday because that would put
Hoshanah Rabba, the last day of Sukkot before
Sh’mini Atzeret, on Shabbat, which wouldn’t work
either. So the calendar is crafted to always adjust the
length of one or two months by a day so that the holidays always fall on the “right” days.
The next major event in the night sky is the fourth
total lunar eclipse in the last 18 months. It occurs on
the evening of September 27th. This also marks the
start of Sukkot, and that is not a coincidence. The first
nights of Passover 2014 and 2015 also coincided with
total lunar eclipses, and so did Sukkot 2014. That is
because our calendar is tied to both the solar year,
keeping our holidays in the right season, and to the
lunar months, keeping our holidays on the same day
of the lunar cycle. Pesach and Sukkot both start at
the Full Moon, and so are holidays that are primed
for coinciding with lunar eclipses.
When building a sukkah, its s’khakh (roof) should still
allow you to see the sky during the day and the stars
at night. Sukkot is truly a holiday for watching the
heavens. This first day of Sukkot, gather with family
and friends, enjoy a holiday meal together, and then
come back outside later, sit back, and watch the
Earth’s shadow cover the moon. When fully eclipsed,
the moon will likely look red, as the light from all the
sunrises and sunsets around the world will be the only light to illuminate its surface, which is a beautiful
thought. This eclipse will be the last one visible to us
until January of 2019, so hope for clear skies and
keep in mind the wonder of our universe and our intimate connection to it and each other while you enjoy
the holidays.

CSI’S PAYMENT SCHEDULE
One third (1/3) of all fees is due by September 1, 2015 in order to receive High
Holiday tickets. The remaining balance is due in two installments: December 1,
2015 and March 1, 2016. This payment schedule applies to all fees, including
dues, Religious School tuition and building fund. Of course, payments may be
made in full at any time before these dates. To register your child(ren) in Nursery
School and/or Religious School, you may not have an outstanding balance from
prior years.

The NS PTA is excited for another great school year! We welcome

families and children to meet and play at CSI before school starts. All students, siblings,

upcoming events, receive a directory of other NS families, and a welcome packet from
CSI and the PTA.

Welcome Back to all of our families! CSI schools and
youth community are going to be better than ever!
We’ve added, changed and tweaked and then
tweaked again until we felt we are ready for a great
year of Limud – Study, Tikkun Olam – Repairing the
World and Tefilah- Prayer & spirituality.
Nursery School: Change is good so we’ve done it!
Toni Band and Faith Kavy will be teaching the 2’s in
Room 12. Aimee Axelrod and Maris Aschen will be
teaching the 3’s in Rooms 13/14 and Lori Kavy and
Michelle Korzen will be teaching the 4’s in Rooms 3/4.
Come by and visit and see all of our redecorating!
Parents of young children — look out for all of our
new PJ Library programs and free babysitting nights

Religious School: Welcome to our Pre-K children
joining Shorashim! School begins for all September
20. Parents please join us for a “Back To School
Coffee” that morning. Meet your child’s teacher and
hear what the class will be learning all year. As we
continue revamping our curriculum, learn about our
“Four Big Ideas” that will permeate our school year
and learning.
Big Idea #1: Deep Connection to Our Sacred Texts:
By developing deeper connections to our sacred
texts, we discover the values of our tradition and find
meaning for our lives.

A Message From Michael Teitelbaum
I just read an important medical warning with Jewish implications in
one of my dental journals. It says that taking Tylenol, also known as acetaminophen, under certain conditions can be bad for your health.
What conditions affect us as Jews? Taking Tylenol with low glutathione
levels can cause liver damage, and this happens when you drink alcohol or fast. Yom Kippur is coming up, and after a day of fasting many
people need a pain reliever. On the basis of the latest research, I'm going to recommend that you either take something other than Tylenol or at least eat something
first, preferably avoiding wine or other alcohol.
On the other hand, maybe we won't need any pain reliever at all and will "have an easy fast."
Research, which I conducted with help from many CSI members, indicated a big factor in having an easy fast is being well hydrated before hand. People who drank extra water the day before Yom Kippur and at dinner had an easier fast than those who didn't. A contributing factor
can be the choice of your pre-fast dinner. A meat meal can be a double whammy, since meat
is high in protein. It requires more water to digest, and kosher meats are salted, which eats
up even more of your headache-preventing water. Conversely, just like runners before a marathon, a bowl of pasta (with no meat, and low-sodium sauce) is made up of healthy complex
carbohydrates (not the sugary, simple "carbs" which you should avoid) and, as the name implies, are "hydrated" — giving, not stealing, water from our bodies.
If you would like to help continue this research and, potentially, help those worldwide, keep
track of:
1) how much you drink the day and evening before Yom Kippur;
2) what you have for dinner before Yom Kippur;
3) on a scale of one – 10 (one being hard, 10 being easy), how hard was your fast?

SISTERHOOD NEWS

Shana tova!! Summer may be coming to an end, but
Sisterhood is just getting started for the 2015-2016
membership year. Lots of activities and programs
have been planned, and it would be wonderful if all
the women of CSI became members and participated
in the various activities. Dues are only $36 for the
year, and they include attendance at the membership dinner on Wednesday, October 21. This dinner
is always delicious and always includes an interesting
speaker. More details to follow.
The gift shop will be open on Sunday, September 20,
from 9 AM until 12:30 PM and will be open every
Sunday as long as Religious School is in session. The
gift shop needs you! If you would like to become part
of the gift shop committee, please send an email to
giftshop@csibriarcliff.org and let us know. Also, if
you need anything when the gift shop is not open,
please email us at giftshop@csibriarcliff.org and
someone will get back to you as soon as possible to
set up a meeting time or to answer your question.
In case you were wondering, the first Mah Jong game
will be Monday, October 26, at 7:30 PM. Knowledge
of the game is not necessary. There is always a beginners’ table.
There is a lot going on at CSI Sisterhood. The new
membership year has begun! Please make sure you
are current on your dues. The Sisterhood weekly
emails will resume in a few weeks. After the membership dinner, only members who have paid their
membership dues will continue to receive our weekly
emails.
The CSI bulletin and the CSI website are great
sources of information. Continue to read future bulletins, as well as check the website for future Sisterhood programs.
Also, we are always looking for new ideas, so if you
have any suggestions or wish to lead or help with an
activity, please let us know. Our officers/chairpersons are always open to new ideas.

Holiday Recipe Favorites Provided by Our Members
Ruth’s Brisket
From Ali Edelstein
3 to 4 lbs. brisket
1 (12 oz. can) beer
1 garlic clove
1/4 cup chili sauce
2 Tbsp. brown sugar
1 onion
1/2 cup water
1 Tbsp. flour
Trim fat off of meat. Season with salt and pepper. Place brisket in 13x9x2 baking dish. Cover
brisket with sliced onion. In bowl, combine chili sauce, brown sugar, garlic and beer, then
pour over brisket. Cover brisket and bake at 350° for 3.5 hours. Uncover brisket and bake at
350° for 30 minutes.
Remove brisket from baking dish. Skim off fat. Blend flour and 1/2 cup water, then combine
with drippings in pan. Constantly stir over medium flame until thick. Let brisket sit, then slice
thinly and serve!
Chocolate Chip Applesauce Cake
From Marion Sader
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup white sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 Tbsp. cocoa (unsweetened)
1 cup (or a bit less) applesauce
1 tsp. baking soda
1 egg
1/3 cup chopped walnuts
1/3 cup melted margarine (or butter, if it’s a dairy meal)
1/2 cup chocolate chips (I use semi-sweet Ghirardelli)
Sift flour, cocoa, soda, and sugar into a large bowl
Combine margarine (butter), egg, vanllla, and applesauce in a medium bowl.
Beat until blended. Add this to dry ingredients and stir all until mixed.
Fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts.
Pour batter into a greased 8 or 9 inch square pan.
Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean
Let cool in pan on rack
Good served with raspberry/vanilla yogurt or ice cream.
Serves 8 or 9.

Wine Biscuits
From Faye Dittelman
1 cup red wine
3/4 cups sugar
5 cups flour
1 Tbsp. water
1 cup oil
4 tsp baking power
1 egg yolk
Mix red wine, oil and sugar in an electric mixer.
Add baking powder with flour. Mix well.
Take a spoonful of dough at a time and roll it into a snake and coil.
Place cookies on two large ungreased cookie sheets.
Glaze with beaten egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon of water.
Bake at 375-400 degrees for 20-25 minutes then turn off oven but do not open the oven door.
Leave cookies in the oven over night to dry out.
Store in a tin. These keep very well for weeks.
These are a hit. They make a great gift. They stay fresh forever so it is handy to have them in
case someone drops in. They are FUN to make especially with kids because the dough feels
better than Play Dough. Enjoy.
Claremont Salad

Cut up cabbage, green pepper, cucumber, and carrots.
Dress with equal parts of vinegar, sugar, and oil.

Dittelman Rice

Melt 1 or 2 sticks margarine in large pot
Add 6 handfuls of fine egg noodles. 4T Sesame seeds, 1 chopped onion
Cook above for 8-10 minutes, covered
Add 5 cups boiling water, 4 bullion cubes, 2 cups raw rice (I used brown Basmati rice)
Cook for one hour on top of stove
Serves 10.
This reheats very well in the pot and may be made ahead of time.
Neiman-Marcus Cookies (Recipe may be halved)
From Faye Dittelman
2 cups butter
24 oz.chocolate chips
2 cups brown sugar
2 tsp. soda
2 cups sugar
1 - 8 oz. Hershey Bar (grated)
4 eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)
4 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
5 cups blended oatmeal
2 tsp. vanilla
Measure oatmeal, and blend in a blender to a fine powder. Cream the butter and both sugars.
Add eggs and vanilla, mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda.
Add chocolate chips, Hershey Bar, and nuts.
Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees.
Makes 112 cookies.
Pumpkin Chiffon Pie
From Faye Dittelman
In a double boiler: Add ¾ cup milk, 1 packet plain gelatin, warm till dissolved.
Add 1 cup brown sugar, 1/1/3 c pumpkin, 1/2/ t salt, allspice, ¼ t ginger, 1 1/2 t cinnamon, 3 egg
yolks (reserve egg whites)
Cook, stirring often until very thick, ~10 minutes. Cool ~ 20 minutes until almost set (put in
refrigerator or add ice to double boiler)
Beat egg whites with 6 Tbl sugar until firm
Fold in pumpkin mixture and put into graham cracker crust
Cool

CSI bulletin advertising procedures:
 All CSI Bulletin advertisers can place COLOR ads. This will give our sponsors the opportunity to publish
eye-catching ads that will pop off the pages.
 The on-line bulletin posted on CSI’s website now includes advertisements!
CSI’s monthly bulletins reach over 600 local homes and businesses and is posted on our public website. If
you shop at an advertiser from our bulletin, please remember to tell them that you saw their ad in the CSI
bulletin!
Are you interested in placing an ad of your own? Do you know of a local business you frequent or a new
store in town which you think would benefit from placing an ad with us? Jolie Levy, our Bulletin Editor, will
