The Tour kicks off the spring
remodeling and building season,
and connects consumers with
MBA members – the area’s leading
contractors and builders – who
will be onsite to answer questions.

professionals covering topics like
how to select contractors, interior
design, deciding to build or
remodel, and preparing your home
for sale. Information about
the MBA Spring Tour and product
information will also be available.

10 Spring Landscape Tips
When winter finally releases its grip on your
yard and gardens, milder spring weather
pushes your plants into their most active
growth phase of the year. Even if you did
nothing, your yard will become greener day
by day as springtime warmth and rainfall
works its magic and breathes life back into
the landscape.
If you would like to help the process along
and make your yard much more beautiful,
here are some tips you could practice every
year to put the finishing touches on what
Mother Nature has started.
1) Remove all of the winter mulch that was
applied last fall as extra protection for
tender, marginally hardy plants.
2) Walk through the landscape to inspect for
wildlife damage and do some corrective
pruning to compensate for it. Check your
perennial beds for frost heaving and replant
those plants that may have worked their way
out of the soil. Cut back to ground level any
perennials that should have been cut back
last fall or winter.
3) When the ground has dried sufficiently,
rake the lawn to aerate those patches that are
matted down and to remove snow mold.
4) If ornamental grasses were left standing
over the winter, cut the cool season grasses
(feather reed, bottle brush, blue oat, bluegrass, moor grass and Japanese and palm
sedges) down to the ground as soon as
possible. Warm season grasses can be
allowed to stand for a few more weeks as
the ground warms, but could also be cut.
Semi-evergreen and evergreen ornamental
grasses should simply be cleaned (remove
and dead or discolored leaves).
5) When working from a plan or need a
specific plant – order early! Ordering as
early as possible increases the possibility
of getting the variety and size of the plants
that you want.
6) Top dress planting beds with fresh mulch.
The optimum depth for shredded hardwood
bark is 3 to 4 inches. Mulch should taper
down to ground level around tree trunks and
plant stems to avoid unwanted insects and
disease problems from accumulating right
next to the plants. Try not to pile too much
mulch on top of perennial plants because a
lack of oxygen will promote root rot. Two
inches of mulch in perennial beds is
sufficient.

fertilizer packets that, once installed, will
fertilize for 3 to 5 years in northern climates

provide just the right nutrients to stimulate

10) Get out the rake or leaf blower and
remove debris and last fall’s leaves from the
places where they have collected over the
winter (fence corners, low spots, under and
behind shrubs, etc.).

Checklist for Finding & Hiring a Builder or Remodeler
Doing your homework will help you have a more successful experience.
Use this checklist to help you
select a home builder or home
remodeler to work on or
build your home.
√ Contact the Metropolitan Builders Association for the names of member
builders and remodelers: MBAonline.org. You can also ask family, friends or
coworkers for recommendations.
√ Make sure the builder or home remodeler has a permanent business
location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.
√ Find out how long they have been in the building business. It usually takes
three to five years to establish a financially sound business. You want to make
sure they will be around after the construction is complete to service any
warranties.
√ Check out the company's rating and if there have been any complaints filed
with your local Better Business Bureau: www.bbb.org.
√ Make sure the builder/remodeler has sufficient workers compensation and
general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any constructionrelated accidents on your premises.
√ Ask the builder/remodeler to provide you with names of previous customers. If they won't, beware. If they do, ask the customers if they would
hire the builder/remodeler again.
√ Ask if you can see the builder/remodeler’s work, both completed and in
progress. Check for quality of workmanship and materials.
√ Do you feel you can easily communicate with the builder/remodeler?
Remember you will be in close contact with them throughout the
construction process and afterward as you live in your new home.
√ Make sure the builder/remodeler provides you with a complete and clearly
written contract. The contract will benefit both of you. If you are having a
new home built, get and review a copy of the home warranty and homeowner
manual as well.
√ Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the builder/remodeler is unable
to pay for the materials and labor as the project proceeds, this may indicate a
potential problem. Keep in mind that less expensive does not necessarily
mean better!

The Metropolitan Builders Association (MBA) is proud to announce that the
2014 MBA Parade of Homes will be held in three subdivisions: Hawks Glen in Mequon;
Victoria Station in Pewaukee; and Twin Pine Farms in the Town of Lisbon.
The Parade will run Saturday, August 9 through Monday, September 1.
“The 2014 Parade of Homes will feature 21 brand new, never-been-seen homes complete with
the latest designs and decorating trends,” said Kristine Hillmer, MBA Executive Director.
More than 30,000 visitors are expected to tour the homes over the course of the three-week
event. Visitors interested in building or buying a new home, remodeling, or gathering ideas for
home improvement projects will have the opportunity to interact with the area’s top experts
in the field.

Tim O’Brien Homes Prepares to Unveil New Design Studio
Tim O’Brien Homes will soon unveil
its new Design Studio where homebuyers
can touch, feel, and experiment with
everything from exterior details to
lighting to shower sprays.
“The Design Studio gives our homebuyers
a venue to make all the interior and
exterior choices in one location rather
than driving to multiple locations,”
said Tim O’Brien, President of Tim
O’Brien Homes. “The homeowner can
do it all here with the guidance and
expertise our Interior Design Specialist.”
Visitors entering the 1,600
square-foot Design Studio will be
welcomed to a lounge area, kitchen and
bath vignettes for real-life application,
an exterior area, many displays of material choices, and sizeable flooring choices
as you walk throughout the studio.
Among the highlights are two kitchen
vignettes. The gourmet kitchen featuring
ceiling-high cabinetry, a cooktop, a
chimney-style range hood, double oven,
and quartz countertops. A second
kitchen has staggered cabinetry with
crown molding, an island with a raised
overhang, and a Moen MotionSense®
faucet for hands-free convenience.
Two bathroom vignettes feature
showerhead styles and tiling choices.
One of the showers is equipped with
an interactive Moen ioDigital™
showerhead, which allows the user to
set and maintain the perfect temperature
and flow, and control it remotely.
A grand opening event is
scheduled for Saturday,
May 10th
from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
