Metea Valley High School Chamber Singers
Metea Valley High School Fine Arts Department The Metea Valley High School Fine Arts Department prepares students to be lifelong patrons and practitioners of the arts by fostering creativity, promoting critical thinking and increasing aesthetic awareness. w w w. me t eamusi c. org Indian Prairie School District #204 serves nearly 29,000 students at 33 schools in Aurora, Bolingbrook, Naperville and Plainfield. Metea Valley High School, located in Aurora, is the newest of three high schools, offering students a wide array of curricular and co-curricular experiences. Metea Valley High School administration: Principal: Dr. Darrell Echols | Assistant Principals: Dr. Quynh Harvey, Laura James-Schrader & Kimberly Maloney “Symphony is the ability to put together the pieces. It is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyze; to see relationships between seemingly unrelated fields; to detect broad patterns rather than to deliver specific answers; and to invent something new by combining elements nobody else thought to pair.” - Daniel H. Pink, A Whole New Mind Dear Illinois Music Education Conference Participants: Excellence in music teaching begins with a long range vision of each student as a skilled, literate, and independently creative musician. Through the sharing of their individual intellectual, technical, and emotional faculties, Metea Valley students and conductors strive to think symphonically in a joint effort to imaginatively draw on what they see and hear in order to realize for an audience and themselves something that did not exist just moments before – Music! It is with great pride that I extend my congratulations to Maestros Nathan Bramstedt and Paulette Boddy, accompanist Melinda Arnold, and all of the MVHS music educators for fostering a learning environment where students repeatedly experience the essence of the art form by achieving excellence in musical performance. It is through such efforts that young musicians have an opportunity such as this to showcase their talents, skills, knowledge, and most importantly their passion for music-making. The repertoire for this concert embodies the goal of merging the creative vision of a master composer from a different age or culture with the musical intelligence, critical listening and thinking skills, life experiences, collaborative capabilities, and imagination of a modern day student. I hope that you will thoroughly enjoy their “choral symphony” of musical ideas. Representing 33 schools and serving over 28,000 students from four Chicago suburban communities, the music faculty of Indian Prairie School District 204 is grateful for the opportunity to share the musical voices and artistic designs of the Metea Valley High School Chamber Singers with the music educators and music industry representatives attending the 2016 All-State Music Education Conference. The District 204 music education faculty is indebted to the Illinois Music Education Association Board of Directors for providing our students and our colleagues with an enduring musical memory. It is also a pleasure to share the stage with the Madrigal Singers from neighboring Downers Grove South High School. Respectfully, William Jastrow Coordinator for Music Education “Music is the universal language of mankind.” - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow To the Officers and Membership of the Illinois Music Educators Association: The educators of Indian Prairie School District (IPSD) 204 of Naperville, Illinois are ecstatic to showcase the Metea Valley High School (MVHS) Chamber Singers at this year’s ILMEA Music Education Conference. We would like to offer our sincerest congratulations to the MVHS Chamber Singers on this amazing, educational accomplishment, particularly as our ensemble students embody our school wide motto of LIFE. You make us very proud through your daily commitment to learning, collaborative team work as an ensemble, and continual reach for excellence in all that you do as young musicians and Mustangs. We would also like to acknowledge Director Nathan Bramstedt for his passion, leadership and dedication that has led our students to this wonderful opportunity. To the ILMEA audience of music educators, administrators, parents, and students: we are confident that you will enjoy listening to the beautiful voices of our Chamber Singers as they perform today. We are personally moved each time we hear them sing – enjoy! The entire Indian Prairie School District 204 community would like to simultaneously recognize and applaud the outstanding Music Education Program that has been established by the music fac- ulty at Metea Valley High School. Our students are exposed to rich musical experiences daily because our passionate teachers implement and model cutting-edge pedagogy in the classrooms. Our students’ overwhelming participation in music - roughly 900 yearly - is a clear indication of our stellar Fine Arts Program. This is a testament to our students, families, teachers, and community; music is certainly an essential part of the Educational Program in Indian Prairie School District 204. We are grateful to the Illinois Music Educators Association for the special invitation to perform at today’s conference. Thank you to our parents and families who continually support our music students as they pursue their passion. On behalf of our talented music students and dedicated teachers, we thank you for this humbling opportunity for our students to showcase their passion for music. Go, Go Mustangs! Respectfully submitted on behalf of the MVHS administration, Dr. Quynh Harvey Assistant Principal for Instruction SONGS OF CENTRAL EUROPE Hej! Máme na prodej Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1956) Schott Musik International These masterful folksong settings and modern compositions explore the folk traditions of villages across Central Europe. From the Czech custom of plucking feathers to stuff into the wedding bedding, to the Slovak story of leaving home on your wedding day, to the clanging sounds of morning bells and crowing roosters heard across Hungary, each piece captures the strength and beauty of the region and its people. Hej! Máme na prodej Zahučali chladné vetry v doline Hey! Good things for sale! Cold winds blew in the valley, sung in Czech We have valuable goods on which you can lie comfortably. Blankets, my dear blankets, We’re taking you away to a distant village. Zahučali chladné vetry v doline Ivan Hrušovský (1927-2001) Alliance Publications, Inc. Reggel György Ligeti (1923-2006) Schott Music More than one mother has spent sleepless nights preparing bedding. More than one father has held the lamp while the mother prepared the bedding. The text depicts a pre-wedding ceremony in which rowdy guests take the bride’s dowry in a wagon to the groom’s village. As they parade through the village streets, they jokingly shout, “Hey! Bedding for sale!” sung in Slovak the flowers wilt in our village, hey, Mother dearest, today is my wedding day. I fell in love with a young man from a nearby village, the grass on the path to your house is becoming overgrown, hey, Mother dearest, when I think of you, my tears flow down my cheeks. The cold winds howled. Reggel sung in Hungarian Ring, morning bells! In the dawn, the rooster cries: kikeriki! Morning bells! OF THE STARS Ave Maris Stella Trond Kverno (b. 1945) Walton Music Corp. MUSIC DEPARTMENT Since the school’s opening in 2009, the music program has quickly built a strong sense of tradition and musical excellence. Almost 900 students are enrolled in one or more of twenty music courses, including six curricular bands, six curricular choirs and six curricular orchestras, plus two levels of music theory. In the choral program, students may also participate in any of six after school vocal groups including madrigals, vocal jazz, women’s ensemble, musical theatre workshop, a cappella pop groups and musicals. The Chamber Singers is the most advanced curricular choral ensemble. Featuring 24 auditioned voices, the singers showcase vocal independence, flexibility and artistry. Dedicated to studying vibrant and noble choral works from all historical periods, the Chamber Singers perform throughout the community and region with recent appearances at the Augustana College Chamber Choir Festival, Aurora’s Mayoral Inauguration, Indian Prairie Educational Foundation’s Gala and the 2015 Illinois Music Education Conference, where they presented a clinic session.
