Bracciano with its marvellous lake welcomes always tourists and inhabitants of Rome wishing
relax.
As it is forbidden to sail with motor boats, Bracciano lake is an ideal place to enjoy the
quietness far from noise and pollution with the possibility to practise water-sports

“ IL BORGO ”
It is the oldest place of BRACCIANO village that still preserves a medieval atmosphere.
Its high position does in such a way that you have a magnificent view of the lake and of the
places of the country.
ODESCALCHI CASTLE OF BRACCIANO

The majestic Odescalchi Castle, one of the most beautiful feudal European manor houses,
arises by the southern bank of the lake of Bracciano at a very short distance from Rome.
This construction, ideal meeting point between civil and military architecture, was built in the
second half of the XV century absorbing a citadel of the XII century.
The visit starts with the magnificent Papal hall where Pope Sixtus IV used to live in 1481 to
avoid being caught by the pestilence which was scourging Rome at that time.
The stuccos decorating the two ceilings of this hall were made by Taddeo Zuccari and are of
considerable value and peculiar chromatic effect.

The third room gets its name from another famous guest who lived there in 1900: king Umberto
I.
After the triptych hall and the Pisanello’s you get into the Caesarean hall where you find the
twelve busts of the Caesars displayed along the perimeter of the room. The whole wall of the
Caesarean’s has been painted in fresco by Antoniazzo Romano: on the right side of the fresco,
you can admire the visit to the castle of the young Piero de’ Medici, in November 1487; on the
left side, the representation of Gentil Virginio Orsini’s triumphal entry to the castle, on the back
of his horse, after his nomination to Captain of the Aragonese’s Army on October 28th, 1489.
Crossing the Orsini’s hall you get to Isabella’s room from where you can go up to the second
floor into the Ercole’s hall and then, in correspondence with underlying Caesarean’s, into the
weapons room with its significant collection of medieval arms.
The open gallery starts off the panoramic tour of the patrol which links together the five towers
of the castle.
The elegant arcades mark the end of the journey at the discovery of the Odescalchi Castle of
Bracciano.
THE CIVIC MUSEUM

The civic museum is placed in the imposing ex convent of SANTA MARIA NOVELLA.
The building was put up at the foot of the Orsini-Odescalchi castle as of Cardinal Giordano
Orsini’s will, trying to offer greater spiritual aid to the Bracciano population.
The convent is closed to the church dedicated to Santa Maria Novella whose building probably

THE HISTORY OF SENTINELLA
In the XIII century, the village, as we can see in FIORAVANTI street, was defended by fortified
houses, but going ahead in the time ,until XV century, Bracciano needed to protect itself from
firearms, so defensive vanguard’s walls were built around the village that there was at that
time.
The fortification of Sentinella was built at that time, in 1494 from Gentil Virginio Orsini, the Lord
of Bracciano, to fight against the troops of Pope Alessandro VI who were besieging the village,
because Gentil Virginio Orsini had betrayed the Pope, coming to an agreement with Carlo VIII,
enemy of the Pope, who was also accommodated in the castle.
SAINT STEPHANUS ‘S CATHEDRAL
It is one of the most important churchs of the village.
The church has its origin in medieval age and was extended during the centuries , inside the
style is barocco and you can breathe an air of solemnity and of devotion.

Probably the cathedral was only a chapel in medieval age and during the centuries was
changed and became bigger and also the steps that bring to the church were rebuilt.
One of the important addition was the construction of the bell tower at the beginning of the
XVI century.
The picture of Giacomo Zoboli ( a gift in the 1696 of the Duke Orsini ) is very important.
It represents the “lapidazione di SANTO STEFANO” with a difference, the lake on the
background, instead of the Tiberiade lake, there is Bracciano Lake.

Bracciano Lake was declared “regional park” in the centre of the “Regional park

The perimeter of the lake ( the second largest in Latium) is viable along the circumnavigating
lake road that connects the three coastal centres of BRACCIANO, TREVIGNANO and
ANGUILLARA SABAZIA.

During the summer a ferry-boat receives the visitors who wish to do a panoramic tour of
Bracciano lake, connecting Bracciano with Trevignano and Anguillara.
The entire area of Lake Bracciano is efficiently organized for sail-boating and wind-surfing.
LAKE MARTIGNANO, about 2 km away from Bracciano Lake, is a picturesque oasis: the lack
of inhabited centres on the shores and main roads in the immediate vicinity have until now

allowed for the preservation of the rich, natural environment despite the short distance from
Rome (about 40 km).
