The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation Founded June 21, 1972 Following is the text of The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation President Caroline Monti Saladino’s speech at the 2015 Ball of the Year. T They say a picture is worth a thousand words and so I think our video gave you a clear understanding of what the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation does and why we do it. However, I would like to share with you two personal milestones that I experienced this past year. The first is that my brother Don would have been 60 years old on October the 11th. It touches my heart to think of how this beautiful 16-year-old boy made such an impact in the world of medicine and science. Forty-four years ago he left us physically, but because of my parents love and determination, he has been with us every day. You may have heard my mother’s words many times that, “In every patient’s eyes she would see my brother, and in every survivor’s eyes she would see his life extended.” These words still resonate with me and guide us on our mission. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of my parents giving me the gift of carrying this foundation into the future. For a woman who almost failed science in high school, I initially was skeptical of my ability to succeed in this huge endeavor, but love encourages us to do things we never thought we could. The expression “It takes a village” certainly applies to this foundation and how blessed I am to have such a committed family and such a supportive village. This dreaded disease continues to pose great challenges since not all of our endings are happy, but great challenges inspire us to make great progress. Forty-four years from now, I will certainly not be standing here, but I can promise you that some member of our family Tita and Joseph Monti Founders Richard Monti, Chairman; Caroline Monti Saladino, President; Arthur Saladino, Chairman will – UNLESS – cancer is a thing of the past and we can all say “Mission Accomplished”. May God bless you all and remember mom’s words, to live each day with faith, with hope, and most importantly, with love. Thank you. It was a record year for the Foundation, and because of your generosity, we are able to meet and exceed all of our financial commitments for the year. We are pleased to announce our fundraising initiative for the coming year – the 2016 Faith, Hope and Love Giving Campaign. Details will be mailed after Labor Day, and we hope to be able to count on your continued support. And please mark your calendars for the 46th Anniversary Ball of the Year on November 11th, 2017! Captions O On Friday, November 6th, LIU Post sponsored a Move-A-Thon. This 10-hour no sitting, no sleeping and constant movement marathon took place in the Pratt Recreation Center and raised over $13,000 for the Don Monti Foundation. The Move-A-Thon was planned by MBA students in Dr. David Jalais’ Organizational Behavior Course. Student Leaders from the Student Government Association, Inter-Greek Council, Student Activities Board and Student Athlete Advisory Council, in collaboration 10 LIU Move-A-Thon with Campus Life, implemented the business plan including planning, promoting and on-site execution of the event. The Move-A-Thon brought together almost 700 students, plus faculty, staff and alumni. The event also featured food, prizes, entertainment and a high-energy atmosphere! Special thanks to Dr. Jalais, Director of Campus Life Michael Berthel, and Michael Glickman, Vice President of Long Island University. And thank you to everyone who participated! An Evening on the Sound in Memory of Scotty Bua O October 10th, 2015, was a beautiful evening at the Shoreham Country Club, where Judi and Rich Bua gathered with their friends and family to celebrate the life of their son, Scotty. More than 100 people dressed in white and came together at the Club for a festive evening of dining and dancing, and remembering a wonderful young man, taken too soon. Scotty Bua Determined to keep Scotty’s memory alive, Judi and Rich and their dear friends Kathy Rayfield, Lauren Cona and Geanine Palmer, have organized a special event every year. In years past it was Scotty’s Walk – a 5K they held in Mt. Sinai. This year, the group decided to take a fresh perspective and change the venue to an evening affair. A wonderful band, delicious food and terrific raffle prizes rounded out the evening. It was a huge success that raised more than $10,000 for the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation. We are most grateful to Judi, Rich, Kathy, Lauren and Geanine for their continued support! Malcolm and Geanine Palmer, with their son Devan, who volunteered his time at the event. Christmas Celebration at The Morgan Center C Christmas came a little early for students at The Morgan Center in Hicksville. Santa arrived on Monday, December 20th with presents for everyone, and the children danced, sang songs and enjoyed treats to mark the occasion. The Morgan Center, located in Hicksville, is the first and still one of the only preschool programs in the United States for children ages 2 through 5 who are battling 14 cancer. There is no cost to attend the center, which relies on private donations to fund all of the costs associated with running the program. The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation is proud to support the efforts of this outstanding school that gives the children schooldays filled with learning, laughter and joy. A Monti Foundation Supports Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Northwell Health Alliance As a supporter of both Northwell Health (formerly the North Shore-LIJ Health System) and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation is playing a key role in the fight against cancer, with local and national implications. In April 2015, CSHL President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Stillman and Northwell President and CEO Michael Dowling signed a strategic affiliation to align CSHL’s world-class cancer research with Northwell’s growing network of clinical services encompassing more than 16,000 new cancer cases annually across the New York metropolitan area, including those treated at North Shore University Hospital’s Don Monti Cancer Center. The historic affiliation will benefit from the investment of more than $120 million to accelerate cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. Funds will be used to advance cancer therapeutics research, develop a new clinical cancer research unit at the Northwell Cancer Institute’s headquarters in Lake Success, NY, to support early-phase clinical studies of new cancer therapies, and recruit and train more clinician-scientists in oncology. “The unique integration of research scientists, clinical translational researchers and cancer clinicians promises to speed the advance of novel cancer diagnostics and therapeutics to patients in the region,” said Dr. Stillman. As the new partnership evolves, Mr. Dowling said, “The Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s more than 200 academic oncologists and clinicians will make CSHL’s promising pre-clinical research available as innovative trials to select cancer patients at a much earlier stage.” More recently, Northwell and CSHL developed a specialized joint physician-scientist fellowship program, Bruce Stillman and Michael Dowling sign a ground-breaking accord. focused on translational research training in the Northwell Cancer Institute, and basic translational research training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. It is the intent of this exciting new training program to lead to bench to bedside research as well as to train potential physician scientist leaders and future faculty members. In another exciting development, a new phase one clinical trial is scheduled to begin in early 2016 that could bring early-phase research to breast cancer patients. The study, which will evaluate the safety of a therapeutic candidate for HER2-positive breast cancer, was developed by physician scientists of Northwell Health, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and DepYmed, a Long Island-based cancer therapeutic development company. “This would be the first clinical study born from the new strategic affiliation between CSHL and Northwell Health,” said Dr. George Raptis, acting executive director of the Northwell Cancer Institute. As a strong, long-time benefactor of Northwell and CSHL, the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation has helped bring both organizations closer together over the years, funding projects that facilitated collaboration between the world-renowned cancer research laboratory and one of the nation’s largest healthcare providers. “The alliance between Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Northwell Health promises to transform our approach to clinical translational research, improve patient care and ultimately outcomes, bringing us another step closer to our ultimate goal of curing cancer,” said Caroline Monti-Saladino, president of the Monti Foundation. “It reinforces the critical role of our donors in supporting cancer research and clinical care.” Researchers and clinicians will work together to improve patient outcomes. www.donmontifoundation.org 15 RD Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory One Bungtown Rd.
