The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation Founded June 21, 1972 D Dear Friends, “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains, and is immortal.” – Albert Pike My parents’ vision when they created the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation in 1972 was to keep Don’s memory alive in a way that would help others who have also been forced to embark on their own journey with cancer. These beautiful words serve as a tremendous inspiration to me as I work to carry on this legacy. As you may know, we have decided to have our Ball every other year. It is a fabulous event, and we are looking forward to hosting the 46th Anniversary Ball of the year on November the 11th, 2017. Please mark your calendars, and join us for another spectacular evening. In lieu of the ball this year, we are asking you to support our Faith, Hope & Love Giving Campaign. In past years, your tremendous support has enabled us to fulfill all of our vital commitments to Northwell Health for patient care, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for cancer research and LIU Post for educational programs. Our financial commitments exceed $1 million each year and as always, your support is the only way we can succeed. Please remember that in giving to the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation, every dollar you donate goes directly to our mission, as our family continues to underwrite all administrative expenses incurred by the foundation. That mission is described in more detail in the following pages, and I hope that you will take the time to read about the significant Tita and Joseph Monti Founders Richard Monti, Chairman; Caroline Monti Saladino, President; Arthur Saladino, Chairman impact we are making in not only cancer research, but in easing the journey for our patients, and investing in the education of our future genetic counselors. I thank you on behalf of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation family, and especially the people that we are honored to serve. With faith, hope and love, Caroline Monti Saladino President Vincent Vinciguerra, MD; George Raptis, MD; Caroline Monti Saladino; Amy Robach; Michael Dowling. Don Monti Cancer Survivors Day D Don Monti Cancer Survivors Day was held on June 11th, 2016, and was once again a most joyous event as more than 2,000 cancer survivors and their families came to celebrate under the tent at Northwell’s Monter Cancer Center. Caroline Monti Saladino presented the Tita and Joseph Monti – Vincent Vinciguerra Award for Excellence in Patient Care to Karen Gleason, who is the Director of Patient Services at the Monter Cancer Center. “It is a great honor to be presenting this award to a person who has dedicated her career to helping people with cancer, and being a role model and leader to other nurses,” said Mrs. Saladino. ABC’s Good Morning America News Anchor Amy Robach, who is a breast cancer survivor, gave a heartwarming keynote address as well. Richard Monti, George Raptis, MD, Caroline Monti Saladino. Hosted by the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation, the festivities bring together bone marrow transplant survivors and their donors. Nassau County Police Officer Greg Holgerson needed a lifesaving bone marrow transplant after he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia three years ago. A thorough search of the bone marrow registry revealed a perfect match in Susan Harrison of Northampton, England. The setting was emotional as Holgerson and Harrison met for the first time at Crest Hollow Country Club just before the dinner. “She’s the real hero here,” said Holgerson, “and now she’s like a sister to me.” “It was the chance to help someone,” answered the beaming Harrison, “of course I had to do it.” Another bone marrow transplant survivor, Leslaw Puszko, was excited to meet his donor, as well. Alana Merkow got the call from the registry, and knew right away that she would be happy to donate her bone marrow. “She is an angel and a lifesaver,” said Leslaw’s wife, Bozenna Puszko. “And she is young, so now Leslaw is young again, too!” After the press conference, Dr. Ruthee-Lu Bayer, director of the Don Monti Division of Oncology’s bone marrow transplant program at North Shore University Hospital, addressed the crowd. Attendees were given green glow sticks, which Dr. Bayer said symbolized renewal and hope, and the room lit up in an overwhelming sea of green. Patients often spend several months on the unit following a transplant, and the bond that is formed with staff is quite strong. The BMTU staff is known for their dedication and kindness, and desire to improve the lives of their patients. They recently took up a collection among staff, and presented Caroline Monti Saladino with a check for $3,000 at the dinner. “We are so grateful for everything they do,” said Mrs. Saladino, “for us, and for the patients. This donation will go directly back to patient care on the unit.” Police Officer Greg Holgerson meets his bone marrow donor, Susan Harrison of Northampton England. Caroline Monti Saladino Named 2016 Humanitarian I In celebration of their 20th anniversary, Friends of Oheka held a Garden Party at the castle on Wednesday, June 8th. An annual event since 2003, the Garden Party raises funds for The Otto Kahn Awards Program to grant scholarships to graduating high school seniors from the Huntington area. The recipients must demonstrate exceptional talent in the Arts. This year’s event awarded seven $2,500 scholarships to local students Dayna Ambrosio, Dylan DelGuidice, Aaron Feltman, Olivia Galante, Emma Kowalchuck, David Gabriel Lerner and Caroline Tonks. The committee also presented their Humanitarian Award to Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation president, Caroline Monti Saladino. “I would like to leave you with an inspiring thought,” Mrs. Saladino told the students at the event. “Don always wanted to become a physician or a scientist, and through this foundation I believe he has accomplished that, because of the thousands of people that we have been able to help in his name. He is my hero; this is his award. I am just the messenger.” 4 Arthur Saladino, Don Matthew Saladino, Ruthee-Lu Bayer, MD, Anna Gevinski, Susan Harrison, Greg Holgerson, Gabby Travaglia, Melissa Saladino, Sophia Travaglia, Caroline Monti Saladino, Sarah Saladino. Your unfailing support over the years has always enabled us to fulfill our commitments to Northwell Health, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and LIU Post. These commitments exceed $1 million each year and as always, your support is essential to the success of the many vital programs we fund. You may wish to consider making your donation in memory of, or in honor of, someone whose life has been touched by cancer. All such tributes will be published in our Winter Newsletter, and all donors will be thanked in that issue as well. It is the seventh leading disease-related cause of death in the U.S. To help Northwell Health’s Sandra Atlas Bass Center for Liver Diseases provide patients with the most effective, compassionate care, the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation has provided extensive funding to support the creation of a Patient Navigator Program. Funds have been used to hire a nurse navigator, Monique Demabildo, RN, who brings a humanistic, attentive approach to coordinating the care of liver cancer patients being treated at North Shore University Hospital’s Sandra Atlas Bass Center for Liver Disease, a part of the Northwell Health system. The nurse navigator guides patients through the often-confusing matrix of multi-specialty treatment, coordinating clinical services throughout the health system’s treatment centers, including interventional radiology and transplantation. Ms. Demabildo also works with health insurance companies to solve billing issues, among other services. HELPING PATIENTS FOCUS ON THEIR CARE “A major focus of the position is to help ensure seamless, multi-disciplinary continuity of care, with an emphasis on making the experience as positive as possible for patients and their families,” said David Bernstein, MD, chief of hepatology at North Shore University Hospital’s Don Monti Division of Oncology and Hematology. “When a patient hears the diagnosis of cancer, it is all they hear — cancer. We must make sure that all the logistics are taken care of. The nurse navigator guides them through the process of care. She links patients to care so they can concentrate on beating the disease.” For the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation, the grant is yet another example of the four decades of support that has helped advance cancer treatment and research. “My parents’ vision 44 years ago was to work toward easing the journey for cancer patients and their families,” Monti Foundation President Caroline Monti Saladino said of the organization’s founders, Tita and Joseph Monti, who established the foundation after the death of their 16-year-old son, Don Monti, in 1972. “The nurse navigator position at the Center for Liver Diseases reflects our continuing commitment to improving patient care.” Recollections … Caroline Monti Saladino with Joseph Monti at Don Monti Cancer Survivors Day in 2003. 6 Caroline Monti Saladino, Tita Monti, Joseph Monti and Richard Monti celebrate as Tita and Joseph were awarded their Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa degrees by LIU Post in 1998. 4th Annual PinkTie.org Networking Event M May 9th, 2016, was an exciting day at the beautiful Crest Hollow Country Club as nearly 3,000 people “got their pink on” in support of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation. This was the second consecutive year that all proceeds from the event have been donated to support our mission, and we are most grateful to PinkTie.org founders Mike and Rich Cave for their dedication to our cause. Their generosity has raised more than $500,000 for us over the last two years, and enabled us to fulfill our many obligations within the Northwell Health System, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and LIU Post. The event included a spectacular performance by Mike DelGuidice and Big Shot, as well as appearances by many athletes and celebrities who came out to show their support for the work that we do in striving to ease the burden of Long Islanders living with cancer. The meeting was called to order and opening remarks were made by Ed Travaglianti, president of TD Bank and executive vice president of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation. The featured speakers were Bruce Stillman, Ph.D., president & CEO of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Alessandro Bellucci, MD, executive director of North Shore University Hospital. Both Dr. Bellucci and Dr. Stillman are members of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation’s advisory board. Dr. Bellucci spoke of the outstanding dedication of the staff in the Don Monti Division of Oncology and the extraordinary impact that the financial support provided by the Foundation has on patient care. Dr. Stillman provided insight into the successful research and drug therapies already leading to improved patient outcomes, which is only possible because of extensive funding from the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation. In addition to the board of directors, the meeting was attended by many friends and staunch supporters of the foundation, as well as physicians from the Don Monti Division of Oncology and researchers from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. “Our commitments to patients being treated in our four Don Monti Cancer Centers, as well as to the researchers working so diligently in the Tita and Joseph Monti Research Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, continue to grow,” said Mrs. Saladino. “This year’s giving campaign must grow as well, so that we can provide even more funding as we strive to end this dreadful disease. We need your support now more than ever before, and we are grateful for all that you do.” The meeting concluded with a cocktail reception at the beautiful home of Arthur and Caroline Monti Saladino. The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation has helped move therapeutic strategies for these diseases into clinical trials.” In the past four years, CSHL scientist Dr. Chris Vakoc has identified a new drug target for a very lethal form of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and now at least seven pharmaceutical companies have ongoing trials to test new drugs. Another CSHL researcher, Dr. Nick Tonks, has developed a new drug for a sub-type of breast cancer that entered human clinical trials this spring. In attendance were Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation president, Caroline Monti Saladino, as well as many foundation board members, CSHL scientists and members of the community. “It is an honor and a privilege for us to be able to support the outstanding research taking place here at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory,” said Mrs. Saladino. “My family and our foundation are fully committed to this partnership as we look forward to the day when cancer becomes a disease of the past.” “Caroline Saladino continues the legacy of her parents’ commitment to the Long Island community, raising awareness and advocating for cancer patients and their families,” said Dr. Stillman. “She embodies what it means to be a philanthropist and we are all grateful for her tireless efforts.
