We are proud to promote Corvette enthusiasm, offer planned road trips, organize social gatherings, donate to local charities and promote driving safety. The club website and this newsletter keep members informed. All Corvette owners are welcome to join the club. Page 2 Texas Corvette Association Message from TCA President, Glen Leonard The spring car show season is quickly approaching, which means it is time to get all our beautiful Corvettes out of the garage, clean, polish and drive them. The TCA was very well represented at the San Antonio Auto Rama on March 13-16. We had 10 Corvettes entered in the car show. All the TCA Corvettes were place together in a group and stanchioned off for protection. The Corvette Corral looked terrific and TCA proud. The Raffle Car was also on display and ticket sales were good for the three day event. I would like to THANK everyone who participated in Raffle Car ticket sales over this weekend. Our club also attended the Lester’s Automotive Car Show in Boerne on Sunday, March 22. We had 20 Corvettes that entered the show and we got to park all the cars together under a large canopy. Four TCA members won awards in the Corvette categories. The TCA ALL event this month was a great Poker Run. We met at the Home Depot parking lot in Seguin with 30 Corvettes and 50 members (huge turnout) ready to join the Run. The first stop was the Texas Theater in Seguin, then lunch at the Power Plant Grill, Luling Oil Museum, Gonzales Memorial Museum and the final stop was the Court Street Coffee Shop. As TCA members we got to do everything we love; drive our Corvettes in perfect weather, eat lunch, learn some Texas history and enjoy some ice cream at the final stop. The CEO’s for this event Glenn and Jill Cook did an outstanding job preparing, planning, organizing and executing the best Poker Run ever. We did not lose a Corvette all day long. THANK YOU very much for a job well done. As a TCA member if you are not participating in our monthly TCA ALL events you are missing something very special. Our biggest event of the year is just around the corner…..TCA 23rd Annual Open Car Show in Boerne on April 17-19, 2015. I would ask that everyone please register early for the car show and join in the Friday Night Meet & Greet at the Ye Kendall Inn and welcome all of our out of town guests, also don’t miss the Sunday Hill Country Run. Bob Howell our Car Show Chairman tells me that all the committees are up and running. If you have not signed up to work on at least one committee, please contact Bob and he will find you a place to get involved. The Texas Corvette Association is your club and the best way to get maximum enjoyment out of your membership is through PARTICIPATION in our events. So please come out get involved and have a good time and meet some new friends. THE CORVETTES BRING US TOGETHER, BUT OUR PEOPLE KEEP US TOGETHER! I look forward to seeing everyone at our next General Meeting. ge 3 P aApril g eP3a2015 What did I miss? Recap of April 7th club meeting NSM Ambassador Update— By Glen Leonard After nearly 4 years as NSM Ambassador, Michael Reinert is handing off the baton to Rick Creekmore. Thanks to BOTH TCA members for your help with this important role within our club. Cavender Chevrolet Update, by Dennis Steward, Cavender Chevrolet Cavender Chevrolet has agreed to bring a few new cars to the car show in Boerne again this year to be displayed near the Gazebo. Driving Safety, by Dean Heath Car inspections will now be tied to your car's regis- tration date, however there may be a period where the two don’t sync up and you’ll need to carry a letter in your vehicle versus having a sticker that covers both. Door Prizes, by Jo Leonard Door prizes were won by James York, John Dewey and Kim Ketchner Habadashery by Pat Martin Raffle Car Update — by Glen Leonard, President There are TCA Black hats with flames available. Fiesta Medals are available for $5.00. While we are a little behind schedule raising money from the raffle car sales versus this time last year, we have had only 15 events in 2015 versus 23 in 2014 and our per event amount has been much higher. We also anticipate another large infusion of ticket sales the day of the car show. TCA License Plate Frames are available. See Pat’s contact info on page 14 if you are interested in purchasing any merchandise. GREAT work to all the teams who have spent time selling tickets. We’ll have another nice donation this year for St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. Page 3 Texas Corvette Association Page 4 Club Meeting Recap—continued In appreciation of Biff Buzby’s continued hospitality and support of the TCA, Bob Howell, 2015 Car Show Chairman, presented Donna Humphrey with a framed 2015 Open Car Show T-Shirt which features an image of Biff Buzby’s restaurant. April 2015 New Member Feature— Steven Lea I am a first time Corvette owner and have not owned an American built car in almost 30 years! When I read the Wall Street Journal review of the new Stingray in late August 2013 and then saw one at the Circuit of The Americas for Lone Star American Le Mans race, I was sold! I ordered my Z51 with the encouragement of my Aussie race buddy who drives an M3. About 2 months later he called me after driving into work on I10 and told me "Mate, I saw a transport carrying 10 Corvettes, perhaps one is yours!?" About an hour later my dealer called to tell me they had my car! And to make even better, it was my birthday that day! I am a Wealth Advisor with Frost in Boerne. I am an avid surfer and road cyclist, but haven't tried to haul either boards or bikes in the 'Vette! I look forward to the TCA Open Car Show and club activities. Steven Lea and his Z51 C7 Stingray New Member Feature— Jim and Trina Major Jim and Trina Major have lived in San Antonio since 1984 and currently live in Hollywood Park. Jim grew up in Oklahoma and Trina was born and spent most of her life in Texas. Jim and Trina were married in 1988 and have a daughter, Selah, who lives in Austin, a dog, and to some dismay, a cat that likes sleeping on top of the Corvette convertible top. Jim is a Professional Geologist and manages the environmental investigation and remediation group for Terracon Consultants, Inc. Trina is an event planner and interior designer. They are volunteer ushers for the Majestic Theater and the Tobin Center and attend many concerts, comedy acts, and other performances. They also like to travel and enjoy the outdoors. Jim is a weekend gear head and they both are classic car enthusiasts and own a 1955 Cadillac, a 1972 Mercedes-Benz convertible as well as their first Corvette, a 2002 C5 convertible (the cat bed). Jim and Trina are looking forward to meeting more TCA members and participating in many of the great club events. Jim and Trina with their Black 2002 C5 Convertible and their adorable dog. Page 5 Texas Corvette Association Page 6 Get to know some of the Board Members & Officers at Large Featured this month: Rick Creekmore and Barry Christman (aka, the Cookie Man!) Rick Creekmore, Officer at Large Barry Christman, Board Member and Officer at Large and his wife, Kathy I’ve been married to Cheri for 44 years and we have two children and four beautiful grandkids; with one more arriving in March. We have a 1964 silver convertible Corvette with matching numbers, and a 2011 black convertible 3LT Corvette. Cheri and I love to cruise around town enjoying our Vettes and the super friends we made in the TCA. Served in the Air Force for 28 years as a financial analyst and personal officer. One of my last jobs was as Support Group (Base) commander at Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. I worked for George Gervin, former San Antonio Spurs star player, raising money to build a school for disadvantaged children. Then I worked as a contactor and federal civilian at Randolph Air Force Base. Woodworking, fishing, lots of travel, and spending time at our beach condo are now how we spend the major part of our time. I have been a member of the TCA since 2003 when I purchased my first Corvette which was a 1995 C-4 Black Convertible. In 2008 I purchased a 1972 Red Stingray and still have both cars. I am married to Kathy who is from Chicago and we have two boys. I grow up on a dairy farm in eastern Pennsylvania and milked many cows alongside my twin brother Larry. After graduating high school in 1964 I entered the United States Marine Corp and spent 10 months in Vietnam with a rifle platoon. I have been in food sales since 1969. For the first 40 years I sold meat and now I am selling bakery items. How’s that? Butcher, Bakery, and next? Many club members call me “the cookie man”. If we are on a Corvette run and I don’t have cookies it’s only because I forgot them. The TCA is like family to me. Many of the members have become some of my closest and best friends I have ever had. Hope to see you at many events and I’ll have a cookie for you. Mystery TCA Member —Be the first to answer correctly and get your prize at the next club meeting HINTS: Born in Reno, NV Is an expert marksman Moved to San Antonio in 1987 Has owned close to 30 vehicles Was almost punched by Muhammad Ali Send your guess to Kathleen Golden at newsletter@texas-corvette-association.org From the March newsletter the Mystery TCA Member was Bob Howell. Suggestions for events are dinner drives; maintenance events; viewing the Bracken bat cave, museums, attractions; as well as driving events such as autocross, drag racing, HPDE, and road rallies. (See the CEO guide for additional ideas) Once you determine an event you would like to CEO: 1) Review the “CEO Guide”. The guide will walk you through a tried and true checklist of issues to consider and things to do to ensure your event is a success. 2) Consult the TCA Activities Calendar to ensure there is no conflict with another TCA event. “TCA All” events are those where we encourage all members to attend, whereas “Limited” events can only accommodate a limited number of members for various reasons. We will not conduct multiple activities on “TCA All” event dates, but can conduct multiple “Limited” events if unavoidable. 3) Provide as much lead time as possible; your event should be advertised during at least one TCA meeting and newsletter prior to the event date. 4) Contact the Activities Chairman to coordinate your event. Once coordinated, your event will be placed on the TCA website, announced during the TCA monthly meeting, and placed in the TCA newsletter to both advertise the event and solicit sign-ups. 5) Following the event, provide photographs (please include captions) and a write up of the event for both the TCA newsletter and website. This allows other members to see what they missed, and generate interest for similar events in the future. 6) Lastly, Have Fun! This is what the Texas Corvette Association is all about! Page 7 Texas Corvette Association Page 8 Poker Run by Jill Cook, Event CEO We had 30 corvettes and 50 people that met up at the Home Depot in Seguin to begin the poker run on March 28th. Our first stop was the Texas Theater in Seguin with Marty Keil (the mayor’s wife) providing the history of the theater and letting TCA tour the renovated theater. TCA participants received their first card, then proceeded to the second stop for lunch at the Power Plant Grill. The grill has a nice covered outdoor eating area with a small waterfall of the Guadalupe River next to the restaurant. The second poker card was given out while we waited for lunch to be served. We left for our third stop in Luling at the Luling Oil Museum. Participants received the third card at this stop. The TCA had a group picture taken at this stop with the museum in the background. We proceeded to Gonzales to the Gonzales Memorial Museum to see the Come and Take It cannon and other artifacts on display. The front of the museum has a reflecting pool with two lines of Texas flags alternating with Come and Take It flags. The fourth card was handed out at this stop. We made our way back on Alternate 90 to Seguin for our final stop at the Court Street Coffee Shop for dessert including delicious Fredericksburg ice cream. After participants received the final poker card, it was time to determine the winners for the three top poker hands. Jesse and Kelly Dickens won first place with a three of a kind. They picked the $25 gift card to Texas Roadhouse. Second place went to Dan and Debbie Leimbach with the best pair, and they picked the $25 gift card to Chili’s. Third place went to Mark and Beth Horner for a pair, and they received the $25 gift card to Dave and Busters. Linton and Janet Savage won the worst poker hand, so they received a $15 gift card to Whataburger. They came from near Lake Corpus Christi to participate in their second poker run. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather all day and pretty views on the drive with all of the wildflowers out. A fun time was had, and we appreciate all members who came out to drive, eat, and play poker. April 2015 TCA Poker Run continued... Marty Keil of the Seguin Conservation Society provided our group with very interesting history of the Texas Theatre restoration project. Power Plant Grill provided for both an intriguing and relaxing lunch spot for our large group! Leonard Trevino’s son came along as navigator on this trip! Winners!! Dan and Deb Leimbach April 2015 AutoRama 2015, By Tom Marazzi, Car Show Coordinator with photos by Terri Butler Once again the Texas Corvette Association attended the Autorama at the Freeman Exposition Hall from March 1315. We also had the raffle car there with all teams participating in ticket sales for St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. Showing cars at the Autorama were TCA members Mark Horner, Ron Fairman, Paul Read, Gary Blum, Bob Howell, Les Hobgood, Dan Martin, Rosa Reinert and myself. EVERY TCA member who showed their car won either a First or Second place award. An excellent showing for the TCA! Tips for driving around Fiesta Crowds The key point to remember while driving around crowds is ‘Situational Awareness’. With dozens of vehicles moving in close proximity to your car, it is critical to build a mental picture of exactly what’s around you at all times, while keeping your attention on what’s ahead. Use your mirrors liberally and turn your head to see into blind spots, and driving in crowded streets and parking lots will be far less stressful than it otherwise would be. Be sure to pack a good amount of PATIENCE! If you plan to attend a FIESTA event, be safe, please don’t drink and drive, and HAVE FUN! Stay ahead of trouble spots around town during Fiesta but visiting TX Dot’s website to see current traffic flows as well as lane closures. April 2015 March 2015 Page 13 Car Show Coordination, it takes a village. It takes a whole slew of folks to pull off the TCA Open Car Show each year. From finding vendors, mapping out parking grids, designing T Shirts, awards and Fiesta pins, gathering items for the Silent Auction and pricing them. From coordinating with the City of Boerne, the Fiesta Commission, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children to contacting every car club within hundreds of miles to invite out to the car show. It includes handling all the pre-registration, the online media presence and arranging for local media support. What is a car show without music and port-a-potties?! Not to mention the attention to detail to manage the voting process and handing out awards. We have folks there to help sell more raffle tickets and meet and greet our guests. We have a crew there to thank everyone for attending. And a crew to handle day-of registrations. And what about the night before? We host a nice Meet and Greet at Ye Ol’ Kendall Inn and we take a group out on a Hill Country Run on Sunday to see the amazing wildflowers for which Texas has be- come famous. How about added security to ensure the safety of our guests AND their cars?! I’m sure I have left out a lot but this just gives you a flavor of the coordination that goes into putting together a first class car show that so many people look forward to returning to each year. Bob Howell shared his gratitude to all the TCA members who have helped with the car show this year. And a Special THANK YOU to Bob Howell and his lovely wife, Pat, for all their sacrifices to make sure this car show goes off without a hitch! If you weren’t able to help this year, please consider getting involved in helping with the show next year! This is a great way to get involved and get to know more TCA members while giving back to the community at the same time. They will be available at the car show on April 18th for $5. YES, that is a BACON wrapped Fiesta! Proceeds go to St. Jude Ranch for Children. Pizza Man, he delivers…… submitted by Andrew Golden (aka Pizza Lover) Pizza Man Dan’s delivery car is unique, to say the least. It’s a 1972 Corvette owned by Dan Collier, the founder and ‘Big Cheese’ of PizzaMan Dan’s Pizzeria in Ventura County, California. Dan says, “I have found a way to combine my passion for pizza (I’ve been in the Pizza Industry for my entire adult life) with my lifelong passion for Corvettes.” The Pizza Vette is powered by 454 highperformance pepperonis making it the perfect way to make deliveries. How about it guys? Anyone want to TOP this (pun intended) with a bacon wrapped Corvette? How about with Texas-style Smoked Brisket? 1972 Corvette, owned by Dan Collier of PizzaMan Dan’s Pizzeria.
