AACC President’s Message
I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and plan to welcome in the New Year with friends or family. If your
plans are for a quiet night at home, that too is good, as you will not be out in the traffic with other folks who
may have celebrated too much and are a bit impaired. If you are out driving on New Year’s Eve, be safe and
alert.
2014 is almost over and I thought I’d review a little of the past year. Ken and Joyce Smith, Model A owners,
of Highland Haven were welcomed at our January meeting. At Joe Barkley’s 31st Annual Texas Swap Meet
Winternationals in Belton, Alan and Jayne Cox from Surrey, England and Asa and Stefan Pettersson from Vikingstad, Sweden joined our club. These international car folks are internet friends with Joe and visit the US
several times a year to buy old cars and parts. In February a document defining our club’s new Pate assignment of Vendor Escort was developed for submission to the Pate Directors meeting. For a change of venue,
the April meeting was held in South Austin. In mid-April the club toured Tom Philpott’s earth sheltered home
to see his collection of Model A’s and Baby A’s (British Austin’s), then to Dan Welch’s to view his collection of
military vehicles, tanks included, and lunch at the Andice General Store. Vendor Escort service was a success
at the PATE Swap Meet, despite maneuvering in the new area of 1,000 new vendor spaces. Phil Knapp, long
time AACC member wrote an article about his “wish list” car, a 1941 Lincoln Continental that he acquired in
2007. In May, AACC and Lake Area Rods and Classics members provided a car show at Heroes Night Out
annual Military Appreciation BBQ in Cedar Park. The Vets and their families really enjoyed looking at the cars.
In June Chris Leverkuhn, a wounded Veteran from Operation Comfort in San Antonio visited to tell us about
their organization and auto restoration program for wounded Veterans. In September the club worked 3 days
at the Dan Kruse Classic Car Auction in Austin. Income from PATE and the Kruse auction allowed the club to
provide generous donations to Operation Comfort’s Automotivation program and the Scottish Rite Hospital for
Children. In November the club toured Rayford Reese’s extensive car collection in Granite Shoals, and then
met in Highland Haven for fried chicken and a pot luck lunch. The Christmas Party in December was great,
with good food, good friends and good entertainment by club members Bill Cowan, Larry Herrin and Paula
Herrin. Those folks can really sing!
Steve’s recent heart surgery and aortic valve replacement was successful and he is recovering quickly.

Front Row with Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and Elvis…oh my!
What great fun we had at our table during the AACC Christmas Party, especially when we discovered we
were one of the front row tables for the evening’s entertainment. Best news was, they never made it to our
table with the microphone or we’d a cleared the joint out. You do NOT want to hear me sing!
Wife Judy and I were first to our table, strategically close to the desert station, when Louis and Mildred Igo
came up and asked if they could sit with us. Well, who is gonna say no to them? They’re such a sweet couple, and are long time members, who definitely have my respect. Heck, I was impressed they wanted to sit
with us! Next in were some of our newest members, Doug and Nancy Hancock, attending their first club
function. They are friends of ours from a water aerobics class we all take and we were glad we got to sit together. Doug helped out at the Dan Kruse Auction this year.
Louis remembered I’m into MoPars and proceeded to tell me about his involvement with some students he
taught “back in the day” who were involved in the Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest. I think he was surprised to find out I had a connection with the event as well.
For those who don’t know about it, the Troubleshooting Contest was put on by Chrysler Corp. beginning in
the early 60’s to help them identify and recruit the best young, up and coming mechanics they were going to
need to hire after introducing their 5 year, 50,000 mile warranty program. High school and trade school
teams of 2 guys/gals would compete with other teams to diagnose identical mechanical problems that Chrysler engineers had “hidden” in the cars that kept them from running. First team to get the car running won! As
I recall, these were regional events that led to a national final. Rick Hendrix of NASCAR’s Hendrix Motorsports
won one of them when he was 16!
Louis was surprised I knew so much about it, so I had to explain that my dad worked with Chrysler Corp.
starting in 1962 through 1974 or so and that I had been playing with and/or using the tools they gave away
as prizes since I was 12 or 13. I even had a couple of the small trophy’s that I used as bookends for years.
As a Regional Parts Manager and later, Regional Service Manager, he was given “samples” of the prizes and
would bring them home for me after the events. It was great fun for a young kid and it kept me out of dad’s
toolbox, which I suspect was his main motivation to begin with.
In conclusion, the food was great, the companionship/conversation was great, the unexpected entertainment
was great, and I don’t think we were the only table having fun! Ruth Fredericksen does a fabulous job organizing these parties, we’re lucky to have her.

Digital Slot Car Racing at the Meeting
Who - All AACC folks What - Digital Slot Car Racing
When - Sunday January 4th 1:00 to 3:00
Digital Slot Car Racing is fun and exciting entertainment for all ages. It is much like what many of you may
remember from many years ago.
The mobile slot car tracks can be setup virtually anywhere, indoors or out!
With Digital Slot Car racing, multiple cars can compete on a single track. A computer keeps track of your laps
and times, and displays who is winning in real time.
Race models of NASCAR slot cars on banked tracks, or F1 slot cars on tight turns and chicanes. You can even
catch big air racing on our off-road slot car track. With lane changes, overtaking, and pit stops, real racing
strategy and skill are involved. Difficulty levels are programmable so a child can enjoy it and an adult can still
be challenged!
The theme for our event will be around 50's and 60's cars.
Races2U® has hundreds of slot cars, slot car tracks, and accessories from NASCAR and Formula 1 licensed cars
to exotics, muscle cars, and classics. We even have MotoGP Motorcycles that work on most slot car tracks!
