They have returned to school full of energy and enthusiasm for their learning. As I have walked through classrooms this week I have been impressed with the interesting learning and thinking that is happening. On the weekend ask your children about what they have been doing in their classes. I am sure you will enjoy their explanations. The end of term is going to be very busy, so please take note of the dates in the newsletter. If the weather is good we are hoping to hold this year’s Christmas concert under the big red roof and grass area. Whilst the concert begins at 7pm, we would like to invite parents to bring an early tea or picnic to share with their children at school before the concert begins. The school BBQ will be available or parents may like to bring takeaway, finger foods or cold meat and salads etc. Dinner at school is an optional extra but we would like to see you there. Dinner time begins at 5.30pm. All families are invited to the Year 6 Graduation Liturgy with Eucharist on Wednesday 4th December @ 7:00pm as we farewell our senior students and some of our families. Buddies of the Year 6 students are especially welcome. REMEMBRANCE DAY Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month," in accordance with the Armistice. World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.. The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem "In Flanders Fields". it close to the article. Be sure to place the caption for the image near the image, too. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war. To support the RSL, St James has a variety of poppies and wristbands available for purchase at the office. Assembly will be in the hall on Monday morning at 10.30 in which we will acknowledge the fallen and share the one minute silence at 11am. For the last 2 weeks the Preps have been looking after some tadpoles in their classroom. They came from Mrs Waterhouse! We had them in a tank on the bench and watched them grow day by day. In the tank there were also some mosquito larvae which hatched and grew into real mozzies! We were too scared to take off the lid in case we got eaten alive! We learnt that tadpoles hatch from jelly eggs and swim in ponds, dams and puddles. They like to eat other small insects and water plants. As they get older they grow legs and like to live on the land and in water. They have to keep their bodies wet or they will dry out and die. The tadpoles looked great. They swim in stinky water. (Aimee) Tadpoles are slimy and I know this because I have felt a frog before. (Rory) Tadpoles are cute. They grow up into frogs. (Peter) Frogs lay eggs and these are the tadpoles. (Lily T) 4 Grade 1 & 2 Even with the short week after the cup weekend, the students of grade 1/2 have achieved a fantastic amount of work in the past fortnight. We have nearly finished reading The Magic Pudding as a class and have thoroughly enjoyed the poetry and song elements of the text. Today we began watching the movie version so we can make comparisons with media. We are SUPER excited about our excursion to the opera next Tuesday. Declan is on a count-down of days to what he refers to as "Puddin' Day"! In Maths, we have revised our knowledge of halves and quarters and have moved on to include eighths in a fractions unit. We are now working on equivalents; 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 using models and diagrams. I wonder how we can combine puddings and fractions? mmm..... Grade 3 & 4 At the start of term 4, we started doing an Internet project called Finders and Keepers. Finders and Keepers is a educational and fun way to learn. We do this with another class. We have this contract sheet with a couple of free choice activities and some whole activities, which we do all together. We have a mystery animal each week and a focused animal to study. On the first day of the week, Mr. Vermeer reads us a story with some secret clues about the mystery animal. Then we get a week to guess the mystery animal. At the end of the week Mr. Vermeer announces the keeper of the week and the mystery animal. At the moment we are trying to organise a end of year excretion at zoo with St. Paul's. St. Paul's teacher is Mrs. V, Mr. Vermeer's wife. Report by Maddie and Isla. Grade 5 & 6 Students have been enjoying planning and creating models for our prayer garden. 5
