FORSHAW-CARLSON LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM: “Passing of the Gavel” July 12th, 2012 Invocation: Today’s: Robert Turbeville Next Week’s: John Wheeler Last Week’s Program: “Passing of the Gavel” Today’s Program: Ed Philman, District Governor Birthday’s Ed Philman was born and raised on a farm near Bell, Florida, 5th in a family of 12 children. He and Jeanne married in 1970 and have three daughters, three granddaughters and are former foster parents. His daughter, Kendra and granddaughter, Audrey, were Rotary Youth Exchange students. Judge Philman graduated from Mercer University’s Law School with Honors and from the University of Florida. SERVICE ABOVE SELF: THEY PROFIT MOST, WHO SERVE BEST!!!!! FROM THE PRESIDENT President Steve Smith would like to accomplish several initiatives during his presidency which are to name a few: Encourage every Rotarian to contribute to the Rotary Foundation; Encourage every Rotarian to invite a guest at least once during this year; and, Encourage every Rotarian to promote membership in Rotary by distributing Rotary Name Cards for which President Smith will be distributing. Laughs of the Week Judge Ed Philman, District Governor, will be swearing in the new 2012-2013 officers during our scheduled Rotary Meeting. A Rotarian since 1981, Ed served as President of the Trenton Rotary Club, has been active in youth and international programs for many years and served as an Assistant Governor. He led his club’s RYLA program for three years, was International Director, Youth Exchange Committee chair and coordinated GSE participation for many years. Ed was instrumental in forming the Williston Rotary Club. He and Jeanne have enjoyed hosting a Youth Exchange student, a member of Australia’s and India’s GSE teams and Kendra’s Australian RYE host family. Trenton Rotary presented him with its International Service Award in 2000 and Williston Rotary Club named Ed its club’s Rotarian of the Year in 2008-2009. Ed is Multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Paul Harris Society Member and a Benefactor. His hobbies are family and boating. ENCOURAGEMENT: Display proudly the Rotary Four Way Test in your business. The Four Way Test underscores our commitment to integrity of the things we think, say and do. What a privilege it is to belong to an organization with so many leaders in our community. Why does “slow down” and “slow up” mean the same thing??? Why do we sing “Take me out to the ball game” when we are already there? Why are they called “stands” when they are made for sitting?? Why is it called “after dark” when it really is “after light” ?? Doesn’t “expecting the unexpected” make the unexpected expected ? Why is “phonics” not spelled the way it sounds?? If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay you to do it?? If all the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting?? Why do we put suits in a garment bag, and garments in a suitcase?? How come abbreviated is such a long word?? Why doesn’t glue stick to the inside of the bottle?? Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway??? Out of the Mouths of Babes A young child walked up to her mother and stared at her hair. As mother scrubbed on the dishes, the girl cleared her throat and sweetly asked; "Why do you have some grey strands in your hair?"The mother paused and looked at her daughter. "Every time you disobey, I get one strand of grey hair. If you want me to stay pretty, you better obey."The mother quickly returned to her task of washing dishes. The little girl stood there thinking. She cleared her throat again. "Mother?" She sweetly asked again."Yes?" Her Mother replied. "Why is Grandma's hair all grey?" Bubba and Johnny Ray, two good ole boys from North Carolina, were sitting' on their trucks drinking beer when a large truck hauling rolls and rolls of sod went by."I'm gonna do that when I win the lottery," said Bubba."Do what?" asked Johnny Ray."Send my grass out to be mowed," answered Bubba.
