Melanie Salvesen, Marketing Outreach Associate
Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation
Melanie Salvesen came from the Ronald Reagan Library to give an insider’s story of the library as well as providing the latest news on the library. Melanie is an ambassador for individual tourists and tour groups.
She first met Ronald Reagan as a greeter at their church. President
Reagan oversaw the replication of the Oval Office and would hand out jellybeans to children
in tours in the early years. He and Nancy still have offices at the library.
The library rests on 400 acres of property in Simi Valley and has 87,500 square feet of exhibit
space. The Reagans liked Simi Valley and it was equidistant between his office in Century City
and their ranch in Santa Barbara. The property was accepted sight unseen. The library has the
only life size statues of Ronald and Nancy Reagan and the plate glass window of the Air Force
One Building costs over $10 million. Permanent exhibits include a section of the Berlin Wall
and a beam of the former World Trade Center. Average attendance of the library ranges from
350,000 to 450,000 visitors per year depending on the exhibits.
Annually the library hosts a high priority national defense forum for the senators and congressmen. There are also annual programs on Ronald Reagan’s birthday and Veterans Day as
well as an interesting speakers series.
March 5 through Labor Day, “Treasures of the Vatican” will be featured and is the only west
coast exhibit. Pop-knowledgy will follow with past present and future technologies inspired by
pop culture.
Happy Bucks!
Lynne
Thoughts for Skip came from all club members including Mike, Terry, Kate, Sharon, Hal, Allan, Michele, Henry,
Coleen, John, Bob, Ginny and myself. Henry remembers
how welcoming Skip was. Al will miss him sitting at his
table. Allan remembers what he did for Rotary. Sharon
told of how Skip helped Otto with Camp Rotary.
Darryl was happy to see his friend recover from a
stroke. Henry was happy for his grandson becoming 5
years old. Tristan was happy for Melanie and for
Ginny (we are all wondering for what???). John was
happy for the Crimson Tide. Barbara was happy Hal
helped her from rain damage. Christina was happy for
her shower and a few weeks left to go. David was happy for Bob
and the City Council approving the Nottingham Festival next year.
Michele was happy for the support of loved ones. Coleen was
happy for Mike’s birthday. Ginny was happy for the support of
friends and Rotary and to remember the good times.
