Using Visual Arts and Theatre to Prompt Imagination, Critical Thinking and Writing Skills Session Description: Tap into your students’ natural connection to their imaginations! This interactive workshop uses visual art and theatre games as a leaping off point into creative writing. The time-tested tenets of journalism state that every good article should answer readers’ questions regarding who, what, when, where and why. This workshop will encourage the use of these same paths of inquiry to expand the perceptions that can add dimension, honesty, and interest to their writing. Working in groups, participants will approach visual art as a theatre artist and ask questions about character, motivation, idiosyncrasies, history, action, set, and visceral reaction. The exercises used work well with visual images pulled from textbooks, newspapers or magazines, and the internet. Techniques used are adaptable to any grade level and can be employed for small or large group work and for individual students. Packets outlining the theatre techniques employed and suggestions for the classroom will be available so that participants can join in fun rather than feel the need to take notes during the session. 2 Family and Consumer Sciences Career Clusters Represented: Presenter: Kelly Germain, Director of Education, Roanoke Children’s Theatre Facilitator: Kimberly Wilson, T.C.
