We have had a fabulous start to the year, where students have focussed on our values of “Learning, Caring, Sharing: The Future is in our Hands” and what these values mean in a school setting; that is, how they will improve learning outcomes for all students. Student learning is maximised when teacher, student and families all work together with a common goal and a positive view of education. We invite all families to attend our Welcome Evening, Tuesday of Week 4 where there will be an opportunity gather important information, talk with teachers and meet key people for the year. I am looking forward to seeing you there. More information about the format and times will be sent home soon. Newsletter 2016 Thank you to Nina Penna and Tracey Peters who have redesigned our Newsletter to incorporate our values and school colours. This year we will publish three issues each term; in weeks 2, 6 and 9. We hope you will enjoy them and find them a useful source of information. SIP Please find enclosed a copy of our new Site Improvement Plan that has been designed using information from our 2015 External Review, student achievement data and feedback from parents, staff and students. The plan looks very different compared to the last one and focusses on four main priority areas of Consistency, Attendance, Powerful Learning and High Expectations. The Governing Council ratified this plan at their February meeting. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 2nd March and will be our AGM. All parents are invited to the AGM and are encouraged to consider being a member of the Governing Council. Attendance You will notice that attendance is a major focus for us this year, and so far this term our attendance has been extremely good; however, it is important for everyone to make this a priority for the whole year. The following chart highlights the impact of nonattendance over time. Viewed in context, the implications of regular absenteeism are startling. The chart shows the cumulative effect of persistent non-attendance over the period of compulsory schooling. Minister’s Letter parents for working with schools in a partnership in which the child is of the utmost importance to all. The Minister has also sourced some useful resources that parents can use to support their child’s learning. PLEASE support us by NOT parking in the library car park AT ALL. To ensure student safety, there should be NO PARENTS entering the car park from Blanche Terrace in the mornings or afternoons to drop off or pick up students. Similarly there is no access past the big “Dunes shed” off Verran Terrace. This entry is for staff, student buses and taxis only. These rules exist to make these areas SAFE for ALL students. If you have any questions regarding this, please see me at the school. Samantha Schultz Thank you to families who have organised their material and services charges for this year. Fees are due by the end of Term 1. They can be paid direct into our bank account via internet banking (BSB details on invoices). Payment plan options are available through Centrepay (Centrelink benefits) or Pay way (direct debit from your bank account). If you want to apply for school card this must be done each year. Please come in to the front office to organise, or ring and we will send a form home. Students undertaking Outdoor Education and Year 12 PE are not covered by school card. See Julie for payment plan options. There is an additional $20 payment (primary performances for R-6 students and ID card, internet & seminar expenses for 7-12’s). This is not covered by school card, you can organise payment plans for this as well. Julie McDonald Business Manager Second hand clothing is available from the Breakfast Club area every morning from 8:15 – 8:45 am. There are lots of jumpers available at the moment so why not pop in and grab a bargain! I am very happy to have been appointed as the new Canteen Manager. My back ground is in owning and managing a retail outlet for many years, and previous to that, owning and operating a take away food outlet for three years. In conjunction with managing my business, I worked part time for approximately fifteen years as a SSO at Kadina Memorial School. This term, the Canteen will be open Tuesday to Friday. I have made some changes to the menu, offering a variety of healthy food choices. We currently have our summer menu which will be updated next term. For the cooler months, I will be offering a larger variety of hot food to keep away the winter chills. Pam is back working in the canteen this year, and her assistance in helping me set up for the coming year has been invaluable. Volunteers are desperately needed, and if you could spare some time to help out in the canteen, we would be very grateful. Volunteering is a good way to meet new people, especially if you are new to the area. You will be provided with a free lunch and a drink, and the opportunity to work in a happy relaxed environment. If you are interested in offering your time, feel free to call into the canteen, or leave your contact details at the front office. If anyone has an abundance of any fresh produce (fruit, tomatoes, eggs, cucumbers, vegetables), donations to the canteen would be appreciated. In our Primary (3-6) classes we will be focusing on selfimprovement by thinking about the way we approach new learning. Sometimes learning can be challenging but a growth mindset can keep us on track. It helps us recognise that some learning will take some time and effort. A fixed mindset (e.g. This work is too hard) can prevent us from learning new concepts. Primary classes have introduced the growth mindset and have displays to help keep students on track. For example, instead of thinking ‘I made a mistake’ – we should think ‘Mistakes help me improve’. Students will have the opportunity to set learning goals and reflect on learning milestones and improvements. Melinda Ellis On Thursday of Week 1, Middle School students and staff walked to Moonta Bay to celebrate a great start to the year and participate in team activities. The Great Scavenger Hunt was won by Year 8 – they created a model of their Home Group Teacher, Mr Hoskin (complete with sunglasses) using items scavenged from the beach. The hotly contested Sand Sculpture was awarded to Year 9 who showed masterful cooperative skills and built the word AWESOME using sand and seaweed. All home groups worked cooperatively and strategically, included everyone and demonstrated great creative skills. Students and staff also enjoyed swimming, fishing (although the haul was small: one squid!) and the water park. Thanks to teachers and support staff who made our day a great success. Wendy Williams The Premier's Reading Challenge is now in its 13th year. The challenge is open to all students from Reception to Year 12 in South Australia, and most students should now have a record sheet to record the 12 books that they need to read to complete the challenge. September 9th is the final date for completing the challenge and forms need to be submitted no later than this. Please access the website www.prc.sa.edu.au for more details. School Dental Program. Enclosed with the newsletter is an application form for each child to participate in the above program. This program is run through the Moonta Dental Clinic. The fire danger season can be an anxious time for children and families, DECD schools and preschools in high risk bushfire areas have Emergency and Bushfire Response Plans to keep everybody as safe as possible in the event of a bushfire or other emergency. We hope that we will never have to enact our plans; however we are working with parents, carers, and our community to ensure we are prepared for a bushfire emergency and trust we will have your support. Please help us prepare for the Fire Danger Season by; Reading all bushfire information provided to you Talk to your children about what will happen if a bushfire occurs when they are at school or preschool Make sure your emergency contact details are updated before the start of the Fire Danger Season Make a personal Bushfire Survival Plan for your family and let us know if this will affect your child’s attendance By being prepared, and acting now, you will help us to be Fire Danger Season ready and keep your children as safe as possible. We thank you for your support. Approaching Bushfire If our site is open and a bushfire is approaching, the safety of children is our highest priority. Our designated Bushfire Refuge is the safest place for staff and students to be. We will not evacuate unless there are no other options or as advised by CFS or other emergency services. When we move to our Bushfire Refuge we: Move everybody inside, close windows, doors, and turn off the air-conditioning Fill available containers with water If it is safe and time permits, turn on all sprinklers and irrigation systems Remain inside with the children until the main fire-front passes Listen to local radio or monitor the CFS or AlertSA website for bushfire updates and information Liaise with DECD Security, Bushfire and Emergency Management team and CFS to be informed about changing conditions. If you are unable to get through please contact the DECD Parent Bushfire Information Hotline - 1800 000 279 Forecast Catastrophic – Fire Danger Rating Catastrophic Fire Danger Days occur when conditions are the worst for a bush or grass fire and if a fire starts and takes hold it will be extremely difficult to control. When a catastrophic fire danger rating is forecast for the following day by the Bureau of Meteorology, all ‘low/medium risk’ schools and preschools in the declared Fire Ban District will remain open. School bus and taxi services operating through the affected Fire Ban District will not operate. Parents and carers will need to make alternative transport arrangements for their children on these days.
